he 2014 Town of Hempstead Department of Parks and Recreation Free Children’s Summer Festival with Darlene Graham, “Singing At The Beach,” was recently held at Levittown Veterans Memorial Park in Levittown. Jared Farmer, PhD, an Associate Professor of History at Stony Brook University, is the 2014 recipient of the Hiett Prize in the Humanities, a national honor awarded by The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. The award recognizes scholars devoted to the humanities in the early stages of their careers whose work shows extraordinary promise and has a significant public

component related to contemporary culture. A prolific writer and educator at Stony Brook, Farmer is an environmental historian with special expertise in the American West. He will receive the Hiett Prize and give a lecture on his scholarship at a luncheon at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas on November 12th. “Jared brings to light the hidden histories of landscapes and habitats and the ways human beings interact with them,” said Dr. J. Larry Allums, Executive Director of the Dallas Institute. “His still-unfolding work in a relatively new field of the humanities is of such a high order that it promises to become a model for

At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family. And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad! Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I

am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad. Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion. This past Christmas, I

attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix. As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime. We could all use a few more of those.

others who will follow him.” “I’m honored to receive this recognition of my work,” said Farmer. “My area of scholarship overlaps with landscape history and cultural geography, but my career project is larger. I want to help people see connections between local landscapes and planetary processes.” Farmer has completed two books in his time at Stony Brook: On Zion’s Mount: Mormons, Indians, and the American Landscape (Harvard, 2008), which won five prizes, including the Francis Parkman Prize from the Society of American Historians for best-written non-fiction book on an American theme, and Trees in Paradise: A California History (Norton, 2013), which received a John Brinckerhoff Jackson Book Prize from the Foundation for Landscape Studies. He frequently gives guest lectures and radio interviews. His essays and reviews have appeared in publications such as Science, Environmental History, Reviews in American History, High Country News, Western American Literature, and Religion Dispatches. Currently, Farmer is working on two book projects: Ancient Trees in Modern Times (a history of the long search for the world’s oldest living thing, and a meditation on the future of long-lived trees in the Anthropocene), and The Aerial View (a global study of aerial photography, aerial surveillance, satellite imagery, and remote sensing). Farmer earned a BA from

NATIONAL HONOR - John Lantino, age 15, had the honor of competing in the AAU Tae Kwon Do National Championship early this month. The competition commenced on June 30th and ended July 5th. John won many matches in the 15-17 age division for Black Belt fighters. He received 2nd place, which qualifies him to compete at Team Trails in September for a spot on the National Team. John trains everyday at Champions Tae Kwon Do in Massapequa with his teammates and coach, Master Clinton Oh.

The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) recently hosted its 29th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The golf outing was the foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year. Hundreds of supporters played golf and attended the evening festivities. Calling all vintage car collectors! Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray is waving the green flag, accepting entries for the town’s September 20th Seaside Spectacular Collectors Car Show. The 9th annual waterfront event is Long Island’s largest collector’s car show, featuring great cars, awards, live music and gifts for participants. The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 20th from 12 noon to 4 p.m. (collector car check-in from 10 a.m. to noon) at Town Park Point Lookout. The 9th Annual Seaside Spectacular Collector’s Car Show is sponsored by Merrick Collision and Towing and Merrick Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler and Ram of Wantagh. Each year, thousands of spectators enjoy the hundreds of vintage cars (1989 and older) entered into the car show. First, second and third-place award plaques will be presented to car owners in 15 different

categories. “For classic car collectors and enthusiasts, there’s nothing better than a lovely day at a beautiful beach side park with hundreds of vintage cars to enjoy,” Murray said. “Now’s the time to send in your entry form and reserve your space at Long Island’s premier car show.” Categories include classics, antiques, American and foreign favorites and the best of popular time periods. The car show participants are the judges, submitting their votes across the 15 categories. There will also be an award for Best in Show. What’s more, dashboard plaques and other gifts will be provided to the first 400 cars checking in at the show. The Seaside Spectacular Collector’s Car Show is open to cars with model years of 1989 and older. There is an entry fee of $10, and car owners can pre-register up until

September 17th, 2014. Car owners can also register on the day of the event, between 10 a.m. and noon, but space is limited. There is no charge for spectators, and parking is free. Snacks, beverages and ice cream will be available for purchase during the event. All display cars must be checked in between 10 a.m. and noon. In the event of inclement weather, the raindate for the car show is on Sunday, September 21st. Webelo Cub Scouts of Massapequa’s Pack 696 camped out at Battle Row Campground in Bethpage, this weekend. Although open fires are prohibited on the campground, a special was made PET ADOPTION FASHION SHOW - The Kids Adopt-A-Shelter Second Annual allowance for these Cub Scouts so Pet Adoption Fashion Show was recently held at the Massapequa Petco. they could earn their

“outdoorsman” badges. The scouts were required to help set up their tents, cook meals on an open fire, clean and sanitize the cookware, and most importantly, clean up in order to “leave no trace” of their stay. “Leave no trace” is a fundamental lesson

taught to all scouts to raise awareness and teach them to take responsibility for the world around them. The boys had an adventurous and successful weekend. A big thank you to Battle Row Campground for their hospitality and help!

Don’t Let Dry Mouth Become A Health Hazard (NAPSI)—If you or anyone you care about is among the majority of Americans who have stopped or wanted to stop taking a prescribed medication due to side effects, there could be good news. Some common side effects can easily be treated with over-the-counter products. According to a new survey by Wakefield Research, nearly one in three adults has completely stopped taking a medication because of side effects like dry mouth. Some

50 percent of Americans are on a prescription drug of some sort and more than 400 common medications can cause dry mouth, including overthe-counter cold remedies and antihistamines, antidepressants and commonly used medications for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and high cholesterol. When you take more medication, you increase the risk of dry mouth. You have a 35 percent increased risk for dry mouth when you are on

three or more medications. Dry mouth sufferers often don’t notice they have a problem until their saliva flow has already dropped by 50 percent. Here’s how to tell if you’re among the millions affected: Dry Mouth Checklist • Do you take one or more medications daily? • Does your mouth usually feel dry? • Do you regularly do things to keep your mouth moist? • Do you get out of bed at night to drink fluids? • Does your mouth
