he summer has been an optimal time for English as a Second Language students to improve their reading and writing skills during the Levittown School District’s ESL Summer Reading Program. For three weeks, these students entering grades K-6 have met with teachers for oneand-a-half hours each weekday to improve their reading comprehension and writing skills in preparation for the fall semester. On July 13th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its Fifth Annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Outing at the Huntington Country Club. Eighty-nine registered golfers took part in the event, which raised funds for Alzheimer’s disease research and care. Golfers also had the chance to win a car in the Hole-InOne Challenge while on the links. After a round of golf, the participants enjoyed a cocktail hour, dinner and a chance to win some raffle prizes. The event is named after

Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chaired the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. - which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton - is the only local Alzheimer’s disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on

Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. traveled to Austin, TX, to compete in the USA Taekwondo National Championships. These dedicated students have trained relentlessly with their Masters to prepare for the National competitions, and were rewarded for their efforts with 21 gold medals, 21 silver medals, and 29 bronze medals. named AAU National Team Member. Six athletes qualified to compete in the National Team Trials in the Cadet and Junior divisions in August based on their exceptional performance. The students are required to read the book prior to returning to school on Sept. 2, when they will engage in curriculumbased activities. The author will also visit the schools in October. August 26th are designed to engage the students in close reading analysis and discussion and writing activities designed to excite students about reading. Improving Skills

The summer has been an optimal time for English as a Second Language (ESL) students to improve their reading and writing skills during the Levittown School District’s ESL Summer Reading Program. For three weeks, these students entering grades K-6 have met with teachers for oneand-a-half hours each weekday to improve their reading comprehension and writing skills in

preparation for the fall semester. Utilizing the Just Right Reading Program series, the students with limited English skills read a variety of literature and participated in accompanying activities to strengthen vocabulary, comprehension and phonics. They also engaged in writing and art activities. Younger students entering kindergarten this fall also experienced a school setting for the first time,

while learning letters, writing their names and learning to use scissors. Director Carol Rimler explained that even though teachers recommended the students for the program, participation was voluntary. “These students wanted to be here,” she said. “The knowledge they have received was invaluable and will help them be more prepared for the coming school year.”

Everyone you meet is ﬁghting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. So the saying goes, and so the sentiment is reinforced every time news is received of the untimely passing of a loved one, friend, or even a celebrity or complete stranger. You just never know what goes on beneath the façade. Especially in this day and age of social media and what some might consider too much “sharing,” it is striking to note that the public profile rarely matches the internal struggle for many. As I write these words, many of my fellow classmates from the Lindy High Class of 2000 have gathered, yet again, to say goodbye to one of our own, gone too soon. Over the

last week, the outpouring of love and fond memories has been overwhelming, in the form of old photographs dug out from the archives, funny anecdotes shared and heartfelt remembrances penned of a person who, quite simply, had the ability to light up any gathering with his positive energy and smile. In this time of sadness and reflection, it has been said that the best thing anyone can do – the only thing, really – is to take that sentiment and use it to be more considerate of others, their feelings, their unknown struggles… to appreciate those around you and to savor the moments you are fortunate to share together, as you simply never know when those moments will become nothing more than a distant memory. In the years that have passed since high school graduation,

we have all gone our separate ways, some to explore the world, others to settle down with families and some to simply find themselves in the endless quest for happiness and fulfillment. Whatever the journey, those childhood and adolescent friendships that blossomed during our formative years have endured in one form or another – even if only to serve as the basis for those fond memories that shaped so many milestones along the way. And here we are, fifteen years later… a class whose roots remain firmly planted – on the playgrounds of our elementary schools, in the hallways of our high school, on the streets that we all called home at one time. Such a bond will never be broken. And at times likes these, it only grows stronger.

We look forward to an even bigger event next year.” Agriculture is the largest industry on Long Island, contributing nearly $260 million to the local economy, yet farmworkers and their families often struggle to gain access to quality health care despite their outsize economic benefit. Many of these families suffer from poor nutrition, asthma, musculoskeletal conditions, and a lack of preventive care. All the proceeds from the “Honoring the Hands” event go toward a “Day of Health” for agricultural workers and their families, led by HRHCare, which serves more that 45,000 patients and employs nearly 250 people at its seven facilities on Long Island alone. Garden Club members plant and tend, tomatoes, broccoli, basil snow peas, pumpkins, soy beans, lettuce, radishes, cucumbers, carrots, eggplant and zucchini. Staple vegetables and herbs from a Rock Hall garden circa the late 1760’s. “In Rock Hall’s storied history, some things have never changed,” added Supervisor Murray. “The inclusion of vegetables, fruits and herbs in a healthy diet is as important today as it was in the mid 18th Century.”

Youngsters were also reminded of the importance of a healthy diet to our elderly residents. Stop and Shop brought along harvested produce to donate to attending seniors as part of their campaign to stress healthy eating habits for people of all ages. “I am an avid gardener myself and like my fellow ‘green thumbs’ I take great pride in the vegetables, herbs and flowers, I grow,” concluded Supervisor Murray. “The youngsters in the Rock Hall Gardening Club are learning invaluable lessons in local history and healthy living.”

Last Hope Receives Grant Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. was recently awarded a $5,000 Veterinary Assistance Grant from Banfield Charitable Trust (BCT) to help owners undergoing economic hardships keep their pets healthy and offset costs in emergency medical situations so they are not be forced to surrender or euthanize their beloved dogs and cats. Last Hope is a non-profit organization striving to save death-due, abandoned and stray animals. The all– volunteer, nonprofit cares for dogs from municipal shelters, and cats from shelters as well as off the streets before seeking approved adopters. In 2014, Last Hope placed 568 cats and 260 dogs in loving, responsible homes. “The BCT grant helps our rescue to be more proactive,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope, “We can now intervene in special needs cases with veterinary aid; and, hopefully, prevent

people from making the heart-breaking decision to give up their pets; or worse, be forced to euthanize four-legged family members because of financial distress.” Community outreach, including a Fix-A- Feral program and free rabies vaccine clinics, is part of Last Hope’s mission. Having the ability to assist individuals with their owned pets occurs infrequently. “The generous BCT grant will enable us to expand our reach. Since most of our funds must be spent on the animals in our care, we’ve only been able to help a limited number of desperate, owned pets such as a senior Poodle needing extensive dentistry or a cat suffering from kidney stones,” said Stuurman, “Thanks to BCT we’ll be able to respond to more pleas for veterinary aid.” BCT has been working since 2003 to keep the most vulnerable populations together with their pet

companions and provides grants to nonprofit organizations and animal hospices to support these efforts. All too often sick, injured or abused animals die because their caretakers can’t afford to pay for the urgent care needed to save them. When these animals are surrendered to town shelters, their medical issues are such that they may be put down there. Our tenuous economy has increased the need for veterinary assistance grants. To apply for a BCT Veterinary Assistance Grant via Last Hope, the owner must show need such as disability, unemployment, homelessness or being a senior on a fixed income. Fishing Tournament Set Star Island Yacht Club will host the 23rd Annual Mako, Thresher & Tuna Tournament, starting with the Captain’s Meeting on Thursday, August 20th at 7:30 p.m. Fishing begins August 21st at 6 a.m. and ends August 22nd at 5 p.m. With overnight fishing now available and more chances to win, this is a tournament the competitive sport fisherman does not want to miss. Cash prizes will be awarded for the largest Makos and Threshers, and new this year, any species of Tuna, including Blue Fin. In addition, The Star Island Yacht Club is increasing the number of prize categories to include the Tuna category. Participants may only weigh in one shark per day, but may weigh in as many tuna of any species, including Blue Fin, provided that National Marine Fisheries regulations are followed. For the first time, anglers may fish overnight. This is

in response to participants in the past who would have liked to stay out overnight, in the event they didn’t have fish to weigh in for the first day, or if they weighed in earlier and wanted to get a head start on Day Two. Last year’s competitors took home a combined $145,000 in total prize money, plus custom trophies, with 180 anglers aboard 47 boats competing for top honors. John Lowe aboard Jay Sutphen’s boat “Janusz” hauled in the Heaviest Thresher of the Tournament, a 224-pounder. Scott Shapiro on Matt Fuller’s “Scott Free” caught the Heaviest Mako of the tournament at 205 pounds. A total of eight Makos and one Thresher were weighed last year. The entry fee is $750 per boat. For anglers who would like to get in on the action but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for one or both days of the

tournament. Dockage is on a firstcome, first-served basis. Transient rates for this tournament will be $5.50 per foot up to 59 feet and $6.00 per foot for 60 feet and up. Utilities (electric, water and cable TV) are $30 for 30-amp and singlecord, 50-amp service and $50 for two-cord, 50-amp service. High-speed fuel pumps are now available at all slips. Dockage for the tournament is a threenight minimum stay. As per Environmental Conservation Law 130338, New York State law now requires that all participants use nonstainless steel non-offset circle hooks exclusively.
