n addition to typical summer fun, a number of Levittown elementary and middle school students in grades 2-6 have been taking advantage of the district’s Summer Tutorial Program. This four-week program, now in its 16th year, offered reading and math review/remediation during two-hour weekday sessions. Under the direction of supervisors Kristy Quinlan and Janet Jakubowski, the students received instruction in a small group setting from five teachers.

Road to Olympics The YMCA of Long Island (YMCA-LI) is ready to welcome the spirit of the Summer Olympics, which are set to kickoff this August in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The YMCA-LI announced today, beginning Thursday, July 21st and running through Sunday, August 21st, all local branches will participate in an island-wide Road to the Olympics. The campaign will celebrate the multiple sports and activities offered at the Y in the tradition of the Olympic Games. Additionally, the
campaign will celebrate the spirit of building local athletes of all ages, levels and abilities at YMCA-LI facilities, from improving skills and coordination to developing positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork. The monthlong event invites YMCA members to share their fitness milestones and achievements with @ ymcali “#YLIolymPICS” on social media. “Our island-wide YMCA community encompasses a wide range of athletes, all of whom are winners in their own way! Pencil It In By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Pencil it in. Erase it. And repeat. Such has been the state of my calendar for the last several weeks. Months, even. I’m not sure when it became so difficult to plan things. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever. Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen. Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be
rescheduled at least three times before materializing. For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks. Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does. I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore
than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street. Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait. If only it could be written in ink from day one. Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad held a press event at the Town of Hempstead
Animal Shelter on July 15th to announce that 15 dogs rescued from reported neglect are now up for adoption at the shelter. Joining town officials at the press conference
were Town Animal Shelter Director Mike Pastore, Kennel Supervisor Christine Giuliani, Kennel Worker Kyle Koegel, Kennel Worker Jackie Panjoj and Melissa Fogarty.
Presiding Officer Norma L. Gonsalves attended Boy Scout Troop 577’s Eagle Court of Honor for Eagle Scout James P. Medici at St. Frances de Chantal School in Wantagh. For his project, James, a resident of Bellmore,
improved a building in parking field eight, Eisenhower Park, East Meadow. The finished project consisted of the construction of a large set of bookcases and painting the men’s dressing room, existing freestanding shelves, along
with a vestibule area. James was also able to clean out a pantry area which contained expired items and removed rubbish out of a large attic. The Town of Hempstead uses this building to run programs that help the community.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

With temperatures currently in the 90s, residents probably aren’t thinking about winter storms. But in a proactive move to prepare for the winter season, Supervisor Anthony J. Santino has announced that the Town of Hempstead is seeking plow operators to help clear snow. “America’s largest township is committed to quick snow removal and keeping our roadways clean and safe for motorists
and pedestrians,” stated Santino. “We encourage all local plow operators interested in joining our team to reach out to the town’s Human Resources Department.” Plow operators will assist in cleanup efforts alongside Town of Hempstead employees, coordinated by the town’s Highway Department. This partnership will allow the town to clear roadways more quickly and efficiently, as well as
commuter and municipal lots that residents require for getting to work, shopping and other daily activities. Applicants must have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). There has been a dramatic increase in psychiatric emergencies referred to The Guidance Center due to several factors: (1) inpatient hospitalization stays have shortened and are more difficult to access, (2) availability of inpatient and day treatment beds for children and youth have declined, (3) fewer agencies and private practitioners are readily available to respond, and (4) emergency room visits have become more time consuming and emotionally hazardous. “There is a clear and present need for a community-based service that rapidly responds to emergencies and works toward stabilization,” said Andrew Malekoff, LCSW, CASAC, Executive Director of NSG&FGC.

North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center (NSC&FGC) has received a $4,000 grant from the Manhasset Community Fund (MCF) to further its core children’s mental health programming. MCF has a proud history of supporting local programs that are making a difference in the lives of Manhasset residents. NSC&FGC has been providing services to Manhasset, its surrounding communities, and all of Nassau County for more than 63 years, and has been a humble recipient of the Fund’s generosity for many years. The Guidance Center is a state-wide leader in children’s mental health service delivery therapeutic, supportive, and educational services. The agency will be allocating MCF’s funding to the ongoing

Honing Their Skills The summer months have provided an opportunity for Levittown’s English as a New Language students to improve their reading and writing skills during the district’s ENL Summer Reading Program, held at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. For three weeks, students in grades K-6
have met with teachers for one-and-a-half hours each weekday to hone their reading comprehension, writing, listening and speaking skills. ENL lead teacher Carol Rimler explained that some of these students have recently moved to the U.S., while others live in homes where English is not often spoken. Ms.
Rimler also noted that the ENL teachers used content area resources to help strengthen the students academic and socialization skills. “The knowledge they received in this setting was invaluable and will help the students be more prepared for the coming school year,” she said.

Two teams from the North Bellmore School District placed in the Stock Market Game, an activity that introduces students to economics and finances. Fifth- and sixthgraders from the district’s Alpha gifted program participated in the sevenmonth competition. Out of the 92 elementary school teams from Long Island that took part in the competition this year, a team of four students from John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School placed second. Mia McElwee, Stephanie Nodelman, Katherine Olson and Luciana Setteducate attended an
awards lunch at Adelphi University along with their teacher, Gayle Angert, and Superintendent Marie Testa, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Janet Pollitt and Director of Education Programs and Staff Development Tillie McNamara. In the online Stock Market Game, sponsored by the SIFMA Foundation, teams were given $100,000 of virtual dollars to invest in stocks, bonds and mutual funds. The simulation required students to research the companies they selected as investment choices and monitor their
finances, deciding to sell or buy particular stocks as they tracked trends. The team ended the game with $114,490. At the awards lunch, the students heard from the CIO of Broadridge, the company which built and supports the technology platforms for many brokerage firms. They were also able to address the audience by explaining their strategy and decision-making process in the game. A team from Park Avenue School, consisting of Jacky Chen, Helena Fu, Ryan Kertzner, Tess Loftin and William McCormick, finished third.

Twenty high achieving public school students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care, visited the Nassau University Medical Center along with their coordinator, Gina Granger. The minority high school students are part of the Hofstra/Northwell School of Medicine Medical
Scholars Pipeline Program, a special program for those exploring careers in medicine. The students were introduced to the various health careers in NUMC, A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility and the five LI Federally Qualified Health Centers by Kent Kessler, director of HR for NuHealth/NUMC.
During the afternoon, the students also had an opportunity to meet Drs. Makaryus and Zeltser and find out about the cardiology program at NUMC and to hear about the physicians’ experiences while in medical school and during their residencies and fellowships.
