During the Levittown Public Schools’ annual Board of Education reorganization meeting on July 1, returning board members Peggy Marenghi and Christina Lang were sworn in for another term, along with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald. Marenghi was reelected as board

president, Dillon Cain was elected as board vice president and Elizabeth Appelbaum was reappointed as district clerk for the 2019-20 school year. Following the reorganization meeting, the district’s regular board of education meeting was called to order. Three new staff

Students Lend A Helping Hand

Dr. Nicole Carreau Joins NYCBS New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) welcomes oncologist, Nicole Carreau, MD to its practice. Dr. Carreau will be practicing at 12 East 86th Street, Central Park. “I wanted to join a large, well-respected group practice,” said Dr. Carreau. “I will bring expertise in the use of immunotherapy.” Medicine has been Dr. Carreau’s passion and inspired her to pursue it. “I was always interested in science and I wanted to build a career in which I could make a difference in people’s lives every day,” said Dr. Carreau. Dr. Carreau’s research in both Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients included leading a team of investigators across 17 centers in the US and Canada. Her research could allow patients who were previously considered transplant-ineligible to become candidates for the procedure, resulting in

DR. NICOLE CARREAU longer-lasting remissions. “There are so many subtypes of lymphoma, each of which behaves differently. It affects people of all ages and both genders,” said Dr. Carreau. She credits her experience from practicing at three locations: Perlmutter Cancer Center, Bellevue Hospital, and the Manhattan “VA” Medical Center. Dr. Carreau also credits her skills and expertise during college and medical school. At the University Of Connecticut School

Of Medicine, she attained several honors, being the recipient of the Carl F. Hinz Jrs. Scholars in Medicine Award. During her residency at Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Carreau was the recipient of the Student Teaching Award and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. Throughout the 2018-19 school year, Grand Avenue Middle School students worked hard to raise money for the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Community Cupboard. Through two separate projects, the students raised $2,575. Through the ﬁrst initiative, student volunteers sold pretzels from Philly Pretzel Factory after school. This effort

helped to generate a net donation of $2,250 for the cupboard. The second endeavor involved student athletes taking part in community service by collecting plastic recyclable bottles from around the school. Thanks to the relationship and help of the Bellmore Beverage Center, the initiative raised $325. Grand Avenue thanks Joe Sciara and Steve Johnson

from the center in their assistance with separating and counting the bottles. Housed at Brookside School’s administrative building, the cupboard is a fully-stocked food pantry for local families in need. The district congratulates and thanks all of the involved students for their outstanding effort in helping to provide for the Community Cupboard.

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

Assemblyman David G. McDonough (R,C,IMerrick) announced today that in association with the John Theissen Children’s Foundation he is once again seeking the donation of school supplies for the 2019-20 school year, which will then be distributed to underprivileged children from low-income families. “The John Theissen Children’s Foundation has been conducting a ‘Back to School Program’ for many years. Back to school time can be extremely difﬁcult for many children whose families cannot afford new clothes or school supplies. With your donation, you can set a local child up

for success and give them self-conﬁdence heading into the school year,” said McDonough. “It has been my privilege to be able to participate in this program for the past 15 years, and I hope everyone who is able to donate will join me in doing so.” Donations that are being sought are supplies that include, but are not limited to, backpacks, spiral notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, markers and other classroom necessities. In addition, the foundation, through monetary donations, also provides new clothing for children to wear. The collection runs now
