Packing Science By: Jamie Lynn Ryan When did packing become such a source of stress? Used to be, you could throw whatever you wanted into a suitcase, head to the airport shortly before flight time, have your family see you off at the gate and be on your way. Not so much anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the added security. It just seems like, in an effort to make air travel safer for all, it has become extremely inconvenient for most. But, short of taking a transAtlantic cruise, it still serves as the quickest, most viable option to get where you want to go. So that leaves us to suck it up and deal with whatever

hassles come along with our “relaxing” vacations. Having never flown before, this process has proven to be quite complicated, what with all the new rules and regulations – carry-on vs. checked baggage, ounces of liquids, Ziploc bags, and on and on… I must say, this is one time when the wealth of information available on the Internet has proven to be pretty useful. Nothing like hearing tips from those who have been there and done that already. But still, at the end of the day, once all the criteria are comprehended, there is still the small matter of fitting everything into one suitcase, preferably one that weighs

slightly less than a 12 yearold. Because, let’s face it – you can pack it, but can you carry it? Unless you’re traveling to some remote Third World country, chances are you will be able to purchase anything that may have been left behind. It just may not be quite like the comforts of home that we’re used to, that’s all. By the time you read this, I will have (hopefully) figured out how to condense the mountain of “stuff” piled in the corner of my room into my suitcase and carry-on, preferably in a TSA-approved, somewhat convenient manner so as to not give myself a hernia when picking it up. One can only hope.

Scholars In The Arts For the third year, five talented Long Island music students will receive a unique opportunity to study and perform this summer at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The program was developed by Usdan Center in 2011 and supported with a charitable grant from

The Usdan/Bethpage program is unique in that five Bethpage community branches will, in effect, “adopt” one of the program’s students, with each receiving recognition in their Bethpage community branch for the remainder of the year. The students were introduced to their Bethpage branch sponsors at a June reception at Usdan Center. “Bethpage is proud supporter of Usdan and its many invaluable initiatives and programs that offer countless benefits to the Long Island community and its many young artists,” said Kirk Kordeleski, President & CEO, Bethpage. “This unique scholarship program provides five deserving art students, who otherwise would not be able to do so, the opportunity to study on the world-class Usdan

campus. I am very excited for each of them.” The winners of the Usdan/Bethpage Scholar in the Arts program are: from Huntington, Jordan Williams, a Junior at Elwood John Glenn High School. He will study Trumpet and Chorus at Usdan, performing this summer with Band IV; from Melville, Cara Jacobson is a Junior at Half Hollow Hills East High School. She comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern, and will perform with the Senior Chorus and the Select Chamber Choir. From North Babylon, Abraham Pierre is an Eighth Grade student at Robert Moses Middle School. Fire Island Ecosystem “

The ecosystem on Fire Island is as diverse as it is complex. Everything from the smallest tick to the largest shark can be found along the Fire Island National Seashore. In my 6 years of living on Fire Island, I have seen whales, sharks, dolphins and many other aquatic creatures. The whale sightings are very rare, but dolphins can be seen almost everyday. Sharks wash up on the beach occasionally, but you never see their dorsal fins popping up out of the water as in many popular movies. Just the other day on my way to work, I saw a small, dried shark on the sand getting pecked at by seagulls. Types of marine life aren’t the only animals with a presence on Fire Island. Birds, insects and

other land species have also been spotted. We have a myriad of bird species on Fire Island. It seems like each year, people spot a different kind of bird! Some of the aviary species that call this barrier island home include seagulls, piping plovers and ospreys. Fire Island also has an overwhelming number of insects. Pound for pound, insects make up the most populous genre of life on Fire Island. Mosquitos, ticks, spiders and beetles are literally everywhere you look. Some claim that this abundance is a bad thing, but they are wrong. Insects are the backbone to a healthy ecosystem. They are the most crucial part to Fire Island’s environment. Deer are arguably Fire Island’s most shining feature. These fourlegged gentle giants

scare day-trippers and amaze residents. Their playful antics and distinct personalities make deer a Fire Island staple. Foxes are becoming more and more plentiful on our little island. Rummaging through garbage pails or stealthily walking the beach, these little creatures are truly wondrous. Watching these animals from your bedroom window truly gives you an understanding of what it is like to survive. Following the notorious Hurricane Sandy, our island was decimated. Now, Fire Island and its inhabitants are quickly regaining their strength. These animals will remain part of the Fire Island landscape for years to come, for us to enjoy, our kids to enjoy and their kids to enjoy.

Meryl and Stephen J. Gassman of Manhasset will be honored at the Nassau County Bar Association’s annual WE CARE Fund Stephen W. Schlissel Golf and Tennis Classic to be held August 5th at Tam O’Shanter Golf Club in Brookville and The Mill River Club in Oyster Bay. One of the largest social gatherings of Long Island’s legal community, the WE CARE Classic attracts lawyers, judges, law students and business and civic leaders raising funds for local charitable causes. The funds raised are distributed through grants to improve the quality of life for children, the elderly and others in need throughout Nassau County. In the 25 years since the founding of WE CARE, Nassau County attorneys have raised $3 million for more than 100 local charitable causes. Stephen Gassman is the senior partner in the

matrimonial law firm of Gassman Baiamonte Betts, PC, in Garden City. animal doctor.On a deeper level, it takes experience to understand that with each animal a veterinarian helps, a person’s life can be changed forever.” The Long Island Game Farm was founded in 1970 by Stanley and Diane Novak. It features hundreds of animals

on 25 acres of land in Manorville. Year after year, the park is visited by thousands and enjoyed by all. It has been an educational site for school children to learn about animals and nature for decades. The scholarship was established in 2004 to honor the memories of Stanley John Novak, the Game Farm’s cofounder, and his daughter, Susan Mary Novak. In 1999, Stanley Novak was 66 and had been building the Long Island Game Farm for nearly 30 years. Sadly, he died from a heart attack, leaving his legacy behind. In 2001, his daughter, Susan, who worked at the Game Farm since she was five years old, died from Multiple Myeloma at age 37. Both were passionate about animals and were steadfast in maintaining Long Island’s environment. “Stanley and Susan helped our family pursue its dream of building a park where children can see and interact with animals found in nature and now, through this scholarship, we can help students pursue their dreams of getting a college education,” said Melinda Novak, Vice President/CoOwner, Long Island Game Farm. Jake Salzman, a graduate of Sanford H. Calhoun High School, has won the Long Island Game Farm scholarship of $1,000 to ease his financial responsibility in his college career. Each year, this award is granted to a graduating senior from Long Island who plans to attend a two-year or higher college or university program and exemplifies the qualities required to become a pioneer in nature; whether it be in the field of veterinary medicine or environmental science. Jake, who is from North Merrick, will attend Boston University in the fall. He plans to study Biology while participating in the Pre-Veterinary program the university offers. After completing veterinary school, Jake hopes to become a veterinarian, caring for large mammals at a zoo. “I’m so grateful to have received the Game Farm scholarship,” Jake said. “Now, I have less of a financial burden to worry about while I am in college. I can focus on my studies and prepare for veterinary school.” Jake’s interest in animals began when he was two years old and his parents took him to the Bronx Zoo. From there, he collected animal figurines and studied thousands of animal names. His interest in veterinary medicine grew further as he volunteered at a veterinary

Facebook Photo Winners

On July 2nd, several members of the Oceanside and Cold Spring Harbor High School robotics teams received a tour of FESTO’s facility in Hauppauge. The two teams were chosen as winners of FESTO’s Facebook photo contest, in which they posted photos of team members and the robot they used in this year’s Long Island FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. The teams’ photos received the most “likes,” earning them a visit to FESTO.

While viewing FESTO’s production facility and technology lab, students learned about factory and process automation, as they watched presentations on handling devices, design coordination, and manufacturing automation. The tour gave the students a taste of what they can expect when they enter college to continue following their hopes of being in the fields of science, technology and engineering. It also gave the students a glimpse of what could be in store after graduation and

exposed the students to the real-world applications of the technology and manufacturing field. After the tour, students enjoyed lunch and took part in a question-and-answer session with FESTO employees. FESTO Corporation has been a major sponsor of SBPLI and its FIRST Robotics programs for many years and SBPLI is so grateful for arranging this very special experience for the robotics students.
