Holes For Hope Holes For Hope is a fundraising event that raises money for North Shore Autism Circle and Autism Speaks that was conceived around a kitchen table almost five years ago when a group of friends came together to support one of their own, with the hope of raising awareness and funds in response to the impact that autism

has had on the local North Shore community. “Friends Helping Friends” – the guiding principle at the very core of this charity event – strives to bring together the Long Island community with a common goal: helping all those impacted by a autism spectrum disorder. This group of friends took one simple idea, added

a lot of hard work and determination, sprinkled in a healthy dose of friendship, laughter and love, and shook it well to create a wonderful charity event that has been labeled Holes For Hope. In just four short years of its existence, Holes for Hope has raised almost a half a million dollars in support of both national

and local autism charities. The organizations that have been recipients of funds generated by Holes for Hope include Autism Speaks, Sid Jacobson JCC, Spectrum Designs, Nassau County Museum of Art, Community Mainstreaming Associates, Horseability, Camp Kehila, Be Your Best Sport Special Needs Sports Programs,

and Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism, among others. In addition, three years ago, Holes For Hope created our “Friends Quilt” as the embodiment and symbol of the outing. The “Friends Quilt” mimics the quilting technique of “binding pieces of fabric together” by joining all the individuals who are now

part of our unbreakable patchwork of friends. Each of the sponsors who make a donation to this quilt see their names added year after year as a continuing pledge, not only to “grow” the quilt, but also to achieve the goal of making a difference in the lives of those who have given way

The Blanket I have a beach blanket; well, to be clear, it’s more of a moving blanket that has admirably served its purpose on the beach, the grass… pretty much anywhere it’s been needed over the last year and a half. Until last Monday. Last Monday, my friend and I decided to attend one of the many free summer concerts on the schedule this season at Massapequa’s John J. Burns Park. While the forecast called for rain and possible thunderstorms later in the evening, the concert remained set to go off. We arrived early, set up the aforementioned blanket and a couple of chairs, and waited. Light drizzle had begun to fall on and off at this point. Several local legislators appeared to make the

obligatory introductions on stage and stated that, due to the impending storms, the show would begin a bit earlier than scheduled. Perfect. Headliner Bret Michaels took the stage shortly after, and was greeted by an ecstatic crowd, most clutching their umbrellas in earnest, as the rain began to fall harder. About a half dozen songs in, the torrential downpour commenced. At that point, it became clear that, despite the best intentions, the show would simply not be able to go on. The house lights (or lampposts, as the case was) went up, the power to the jumbo screen was cut, and the crew desperately tried to cover the speakers and electronics as the mad dash to the parking lot began. Ah, but there still

remained the small matter of the blanket. The gigantic, now completely saturated, blanket, which now weighed approximately 50 lbs. as we attempted to roll it up and drag it to the parking lot – all the while trying to sidestep the massive mud puddles which had formed in a matter of minutes. As I contemplated chucking the entire thing into the nearest garbage pail, the absurdity of the whole scene suddenly struck me, and I became hysterical with laughter. “The next time they forecast ‘a chance’ of anything, let’s do ourselves a favor and leave the blanket in the trunk.” As I write this, four days later, the blanket remains draped over my deck, drying in the afternoon sun. It’s still a bit damp.

On this preservation, the frog population is beginning to flourish. Preserving Our Land Lately, there has been a lot of talk over the issue of environmental conservation. It is crucial to the well being of our ecosystem that we look after all of nature’s life. On July 13th, Liz Holzknecht, a Mineola resident, presented a check in the amount of $3,500 to Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Ms. Holzknecht participated in the Runner’s World Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon in Boston on June 8th as a way to raise funds and awareness for the camp. Ms. Holzknecht and her family have a special connection to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Her sister Kate attended the camp’s respite weekends and summer sessions for eight years. On September 2013, Kate passed away at the age of 23. The camp held a special memorial ceremony in her honor and, on March 28th, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws held the Spring Fling Joy Prom in her honor. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and

By: Peggy Bayer, Islip People came from all around to see what they could see. They heard she had a lot of things piled high as they could be. How did she gather all this stuff? It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears. For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three. A sweet blue baby blanket from her first baby born. It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn. She does not want to part with it for any price, you see. Though now adult, he’ll be her baby for eternity. So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn.

You can’t keep all these things they tell her - there just isn’t that much room. The new place will be better for you; her heart fills with dread and gloom. Some photos in an album show her late husband in his youth, A letter to the tooth fairy and the third baby’s first little tooth. Roses pressed in a book to preserve their bloom, She remembers as a gift from her loving groom. She found things she had forgotten and didn’t know she had. Some things made her feel good; others made her sad. The clay handprint ashtray someone made in camp The high school woodshop project that had become a lamp. She found handmade greeting cards “To my Mommy and my Dad.” If this was better for her, why did it feel so bad? This was her life piled up outside, she wanted to declare. She was afraid of all the changes and moving now elsewhere. Don’t make me feel like I’m a problem - I’m your mother after all. Don’t be impatient with me or bothered when I call. She wanted them to know her feelings and to let her know they care. Please listen to me - my memories I need to share!

If you are a small rental property owner, you may still be eligible to receive federal assistance for storm-related repairs. The Rental Properties Program, under the auspices of the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery’s (GOSR) NY Rising Program, is part of the State’s efforts to replenish housing stock and increase community storm resiliency in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Owners of stormdamaged rental properties that are located in areas outside of New York City and that were being utilized by rental tenants for full-time, year-round use at the time of the storm(s) are eligible to apply. These include single-family homes, townhouses, apartment buildings or any other legal dwelling. NY Rising funding may be used to finance repairs to real property or to

reimburse for repairs to real property, excluding landscaping or any element that is not part of the building. Priority is given to properties that offer affordable units – serving renters with income levels that fall below 80 percent of the area’s median income (AMI), as well as properties that sustained storm damage that still needs to be repaired. For example, on Long Island, the AMI is $105,000 for a family of four in Nassau County. Property owners who have not started poststorm repairs are also given preference. Owners who have completed repairs and executed a contract before October 29th, 2013 may be eligible for reimbursement. Funds for this program come from a federal government disaster recovery appropriation to help the State of New York with unmet storm recovery needs.

Eligible For Assistance The federal government requires the State of New York to ensure that applicants are not paid twice for repairs. Thus, any proceeds from another federal source, charitable source, and/ or private insurance received for storm damage to the subject will be deducted from any eventual NY Rising award. The Rental Properties Program is part of GOSR’s larger NY Rising Housing Recovery Program, which began accepting applications from single family homeowners in April 2013. Established in June 2013, GOSR additionally oversees the NY Rising Small Business, Community Reconstruction and Infrastructure Programs. Training in the Immediate Disaster Case Management Program (IDCM) was held last month at Family & Children’s Association, one of Long Island’s largest health and human service organizations, to prepare staff and individuals from partner agencies to become Case Managers and Case Supervisors. These case managers/supervisors will be able to quickly mobilize to offer assistance in the event a presidentiallydeclared disaster and/or support is requested by the Governor. The IDCM

is a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families (ACF). Participating in the three-day training alongside Family & Children’s staff, were representatives from Hope Worldwide, the Arab American Family Support Center and several other

nonprofits. As part of the IDCM Team, Family & Children’s staff may be deployed for up to 14 days. According to Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds, President/CEO of Family & Children’s Association, “participation and leadership in the IDCM is in keeping with our mission is to protect and strengthen Long Island’s most vulnerable children, seniors and families. We’re here to serve Long Islanders in crisis whether it is financial, emotional or environmental.”

In preparing for the new school year, faculty and staff throughout the East Meadow School District recently gathered for a series of interactive workshops during Superintendent’s Conference Day. Among the various workshops, Languages Other Than English teachers at East Meadow High School discussed

the advantages of utilizing the iPad in American Sign Language classes, while social studies teachers worked in groups to develop methods which will prepare students for the new Common Core Learning Standards-based social studies framework. In addition, kindergarten through second-grade teachers worked with staff developers on a new

reading program, and high school English teachers analyzed the new Common Core English Regents and curriculum. The workshops allowed teachers to plan and prioritize in order to ensure all students are challenged and can succeed academically during the new school year.

Preparing For Next Year The East Meadow School District Board of Education’s trustees and administrators reorganized for the 20142015 school year at their July 1st meeting. Superintendent of Schools Louis R. DeAngelo

was sworn in for the new school year, while trustee Joseph Parisi was reelected to the seat of president, and Marcee Rubinstein was reelected as vice president. District Clerk Joan Franciotti, who was also reappointed for the

SUPPORTING A GREAT CAUSE - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray recently visited a Lemonade Stand Fundraiser, located on Center Lane in Levittown, created by Emily Cavanaugh, to help out a family friend whose dog, Frogger, needs a surgery to help him walk again. Frogger is a Bermese Mountain Dog that needs surgery to correct his back legs because of bad breeding, malnutrition and being kept in a small cage in a pet store. His back legs have become misformed and need a very corrective surgery with a lot of physical therapy aftercare. Emily, with the help of her family and friends raised $588 in four hours.
