Did You Know? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely
on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and
insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

Division Avenue High School pitcher Alyssa Weinberg has had a dominant year on the mound. The Levittown School District softball player was recently named the 2021 Nassau County Pitcher of the Year for softball. This prestigious title is the softball version of baseball’s Diamond Award. Coach David Radke said he recruited Alyssa in eighth grade, an exceptional softball player even then, where she has held a position on the varsity softball team ever since. Even though the athletic season was drastically shortened during the pandemic sports season, Alyssa did not fail to excel. During the 2020-2021 school year, Alyssa’s record was 13 and 2. She managed to strike out 200 batters. Additionally, during 9 of 13 wins, Alyssa pitched a nohitter, a perfect game, a onehitter and six two-hitters. She also helped the team to win the Nassau County Conference 1 title. Alyssa, a junior, will be back on the mound during next season and is currently

Graduation Provides Moment For Reflection
A moment seven years in the making came for the 294 graduates of five elementary schools in the North Bellmore School District on June 23. Graduation ceremonies were reflective of their time since kindergarten, from field trips to concerts to overcoming the challenges associated with learning during a global pandemic. “Graduates, I wonder what you will recall when in the future you think back to this past year,” Saw Mill Road Elementary School Principal Jeffrey Rosof said. “Will you remember quarantining and mask wearing? Possibly, but perhaps you will also remember how our community persevered, showed courage and worked together to make the best of a challenging situation.” Danica Brugge became principal of John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School when the graduates were in fourth grade and recalls that they were “quite possibly the sweetest group of kids I had ever met.” She noted that they have a strong connection with each other and she is inspired by the way they support each other during challenging times. Ms. Brugge also reminded them to take that warmth use it to make new friends
at Grand Avenue Middle School, where they will come together with students from several other elementary schools. Newbridge Road Elementary School Principal Denise Fisher’s speech was inspired by the Dr. Seuss book, “Oh the Places You’ll Go.” She encouraged the graduates to seize new opportunities, keep an open mind and try new things. “Know that each and every day belongs to you,” she said. “And the most direct way forward is to make and follow your path, and no one else’s.” After graduating her 40 sixth graders in Grand Avenue’s auditorium, Ms. Fisher stayed to watch her own son, Anthony, who was among 53 Park Avenue Elementary School graduates to receive their diplomas in the next ceremony. Several Park Avenue sixth graders came up to the podium to read reflective essays, reminiscing about the memories and friendships they made, the life lessons they learned in elementary school, and the adults who made a positive difference in their lives. Principal Eileen Speidel said that whether students have been at Park Avenue for one year, seven years or some time in between,
she hoped their experience was joyful and memorable. Retiring this year, it was her 14th graduating class and one that she is extremely proud of. Also presiding over her last ceremony was Martin Avenue Elementary School Principal Leyna Malone, who is moving down the hall to central administration next year. Ms. Malone told the sixth graders she is proud of the kindness and empathy they have shown time and time again, while reminding them to dream big and believe in the power of those dreams. Mariela Pavlica, a graduate from Dinkelmeyer, spoke of the seven-year journey to this destination. She recalled her first ride on the bus in kindergarten and being walked into school by her big sister. She quickly made friends and the story began. “No matter how far we go, or how much we grow, we will never forget these most formative years – years we spent together,” Mariela said. “I will forever be grateful to the teachers that always supported and educated us, and for letting us make school our happy place.”
Kennedy Students Win Community Service Challenge
COMMUNITY SERVICE CHALLENGE - Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy High School was chosen as the winner of the Spring 2021 Community Service Challenge. Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy High School was chosen as the winner of the Spring 2021 Community Service Challenge. Kennedy was chosen as the winner by the NYSPHSAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which is comprised of two current student-athletes from each of the 11 member sections. This is the first time the school has won the award and just the third Section VIII team to win it. Softball players Lara Indich and Samantha Levine created a fundraising campaign, Striking Out Cancer, to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. “During the sevenweek campaign Lara and Samantha held two MOMENT FOR REFLECTION - The North Bellmore School District held its clothing drives, four softball graduation ceremonies on June 23. LLS,” the NYSPHSAA press release stated. “The clothing drives resulted in over 18,000 pounds of clothes being donated with money gained by the pound for LLS.” The Striking Out Cancer team started as just two but grew to 30 people all from the Bellmore-Merrick community. They were chosen out of 81 submitted projects in this challenge. “The Striking Out Cancer program means a lot to me because I got to raise money to benefit cancer research and cancer patients through various fundraisers including softball clinics,” said Indich, program cofounder. “I wanted to give back because it means a lot to help other people and make an impact on the world for the better.” “The Striking Out Cancer program was a great way to help those fighting cancer, while doing something that
we love to do-play softball, among other things,” added Levine, program cofounder. “I wanted to give back because I’ve always been taught to help others and this is just one more way to do that. We are truly honored to have been chosen for this award.” “While dealing with the pandemic brought on challenges that were dealt with differently by all, Sami and Lara chose to use their personal time to do something positive for the community,” said Eric Caballero, director of physical education and athletics. “These studentathletes were keenly aware of a need to raise awareness and funds for an incredible program. The Kennedy High School community is extremely proud of their maturity, perseverance and incredible dedication to helping others.”

As members of the public across the Town of Hempstead and the country continue to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus at breakneck speed, a return to pre-pandemic normalcy is fast approaching. The increased rate of vaccination has spurred the relaxing of many restrictions previously imposed to slow the spread of the virus, and provided many residents of America’s largest township with a renewed interest in resuming safe international travel. To help neighbors get back out into the world, Supervisor Don Clavin and Town Clerk Kate Murray pioneered multiple “Passport Day in Hempstead Town” events on weekends that allowed township residents to apply for passports at convenient times outside of normal business hours. Due to an outpouring of interest by township residents at the first two Passport Day events, Supervisor Clavin and Town Clerk Murray announced an expansion of the program with a new Passport Day scheduled for Sunday, August 15th. Town of Hempstead residents can schedule passport application appointments between 9 AM and 3:30 PM. The Passport Day event will be taking place in the Passport Application Section
of the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion at Hempstead Town Hall, located at 1 Washington Street, Hempstead, NY 11550. “The COVID-19 pandemic greatly impacted travel – both domestic and international – and forced many to sideline plans they had for longawaited trips to visit family members, conduct business, or go sight-see in far flung locales,” said Supervisor Clavin. “With the successful rollout of the vaccine here in Hempstead Town, across the United States, and many other countries, international travel is once again on the table and this Passport Day service provides an opportunity for residents to acquire the needed documents to once again go explore the world.” Throughout the pandemic, Town Clerk Murray and her team provided convenient, safe options for residents, including curbside marriage licenses, Zoom and Facetime weddings, socially distanced wedding ceremonies, and an outdoor kiosk for licensing, vital records, and other Town Clerk services. All applications are by appointment only; appointments can be made by calling the Office of the Town Clerk at (516) 8123100. Prior to coming to Town Hall for your passport appointment, residents
should download the appropriate application at travel.state.gov/content/ travel/en/passports/howapply/forms.html to familiarize themselves with information that will be required at the time of their appointment, such as proof of identity and citizenship. You may fill out the application in advance, but do not sign until instructed by a passport officer at your appointment. Visit hempsteadny.gov/passportservices/passport-fees for passport fees. Residents may also apply for Passports at the Office of the Town Clerk Passport Division located in the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion at Hempstead Town Hall between Monday and Friday, 8 AM to 4:45 PM. Appointments are required, and can be made by calling the Office of the Town Clerk at (516) 812-3100. Residents seeking to travel out of state or out of country should research potential COVID-19 restrictions, quarantine or testing mandates required by the destination to which they are traveling. For more information about the town’s passport services, please contact the Office of the Town Clerk at (516) 812-3100.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their
children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.
