Students, staff and administrators from the Levittown Public School District collectively gave thanks to Superintendent Dr. Tonie McDonald in honor of her upcoming retirement following decades of service to the district. As she entered the board room at Levittown Memorial Education Center for the June 8 regular board of education meeting, Dr. McDonald was met with cheers and a rain of confetti tossed by students. During the
meeting, the board passed two resolutions renaming the Outdoor Learning Center at LMEC and the auditorium at Division Avenue High School for her. Students from multiple schools spoke, thanking her for attending their concerts, plays and sporting events, for her constant support and for being a prime example of leadership, kindness and determination. Senior members of the Division Avenue High School concert choir also performed “The Irish
Blessing.” On June 9, Dr. McDonald was met with another surprise – a visit from New York Mets mascot Mr. Met. After taking photos with staff and administrators, they gathered outside for a game of softball with Abbey Lane Elementary School students. Students on the field were excited to meet Mr. Met and they wished Dr. McDonald a happy retirement. Dr. McDonald officially retired on July 5 after serving as superintendent since 2014.

New Trustee, Board Officers
The Merrick School District Board of Education has a new face this year, as Jennifer Schatzman was sworn in at the reorganization meeting on July 11 at Norman J. Levy-Lakeside Elementary School. Longtime trustee Gina Piskin, who was reelected in May, also took the oath of office as she began her sixth term. Ms. Schatzman’s son,
because they require more attention and watering than the previous plants. In the fall, we will replant similar shrubs to replace those that were wrongfully removed. MHA will continue to maintain the Mandalay Garden and the parcels at Bayview Avenue/Merrick Road and Riverside Drive/ Merrick Road. We will also provide continued support for activities around Wantagh including, but not limited to, the Miss Wantagh Pageant at the 4th of July Parade, the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce, the Wantagh School District, and our local businesses. The pandemic was a great inhibitor to our “normal” way of life. During that timeframe, MHA has not requested any dues. In doing so, they are using photos of our Mandalay Garden, our logos, and signage. This Facebook page is unauthorized in using our organization’s name and is infringing on our good name and reputation in the community, the Town of Hempstead, and Nassau County. The MHA is an apolitical organization, it does not promote our personal businesses, support or oppose mask/ vaccine mandates, or attempt to speak as one voice for the residents of Mandalay. As earlier stated, MHA adopted several small parcels with the intention of enhancing the neighborhood. Two of these parcels are located at the corner of Bayview Avenue by Merrick Road. At those locations, MHA received permission from the Town of Hempstead to erect piers on both sides of Bayview Avenue with an area for planting. Lately, a member of the faux organization had their landscaper remove our thriving shrubbery and replace them with annuals, without seeking permission from anyone on the MHA board. These plantings were not conducive to that location

By Lucy Farinella, Corresponding Secretary In 1997, the Mandalay Homeowners Association (MHA) was created as a civic organization for the purpose of welcoming new residents to Mandalay and enhancing neighborhood beautification, thus, its slogan, “For Better Comunity Living.” During our existence, we adopted several small parcels of land from the Town of Hempstead, one of which was a blacktop triangular lot located on Bayview Avenue at Mandalay Beach Road, adjacent to Mandalay Elementary School. After the adoption of this parcel, “The Mandalay Garden” was created through generous donations from members of our community. We are so appreciative that Environmental Landscaping and Design continues to give their time and expertise, replacing spent shrubs and trees and always maintaining the Garden as a beautiful focal point of the community yearround. It has recently come to our attention that some individuals have started a Facebook page that purports to represent MHA, which it does not.

The Head Injury Association also offers support and services to help navigate the eligibility process and throughout the application phase to assist in accessing supports and services offered through Head Injury Association. It also offers employment services, with Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) to achieve and maintain employment, and to support independent living through training, education, rehabilitation and career development. Another Kinexion affiliate organization is the Center for Developmental Disabilities, located in Woodbury. “We help children and adults overcome
barriers to living, working, learning and enjoying recreational opportunities in the community of their choice,” says Jay Silverstein, Ph.D., Executive Director of The Center. “We are dedicated to the achievement of excellence and innovation within a community based upon respect, kindness and open communication.” The center offers a variety of diverse programs include a Children’s Day Program, which operates 12 months a year and serving children ages 5-21 who have an educational classification of Autism, Intellectual Disability or Multiple Disabilities. The classroom curriculum covers academic subjects such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, while also fostering the development of each student’s daily living skills and social skills. Computer and technology education are a part of each classroom’s weekly schedule. The Center also launched the “Support with Dignity” initiative to enhance opportunities for individuals to live with greater independence within their communities. This initiative embraces three pillars: Respectful Interactions, Promoting Independence and fostering Purposeful, Person-Centered Activities. Through a collective commitment to best practices in the field, the Center will advance the hopes and dreams of the individuals it serves. communities.” Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free and reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate have further strained local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest. Over the past two and a half years, the pandemic has put a significant strain on the supplemental food supply chain. In fiscal year 2020-2021, Island Harvest Food Bank distributed more than 18 million pounds of food – the equivalent of 15 million meals – to Long Islanders
facing food insecurity. That’s an 83% increase over fiscal year 2018-2019. “While summer is often a time of plenty for most of us, many Long Island families continue to struggle to put food on their tables,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “Island Harvest Food Bank is once again pleased to team up with PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop for the second annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection events this summer to help address the needs of Long Islanders who continue to struggle with food insecurity. We are exceptionally grateful to PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop for their caring and generosity now and throughout the year.” PSEG Long Island also kicked off the campaign with a $1,000 donation. Combined with the Stop & Shop gift cards, these donations make up the first

PSEG Long Island, Island Harvest Food Bank and Stop & Shop has kicked off PSEG Long Island’s second annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive. Seven PSEG Long Island Power to Feed Long Island employee ambassadors, along with anti-hunger advocates and government officials gathered at the Stop & Shop in Massapequa to donate food and money, and call on Long Islanders to take action to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, collection drives will be set up at several Stop & Shop supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate non-perishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 30,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Island families struggling to put food on their tables. This goal recognizes Island Harvest’s 30th anniversary this year. “We are kicking off our second annual Power to Feed Long Island campaign with Island Harvest and Stop & Shop because hundreds of thousands of our neighbors still need our help,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Last year, PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island created a venue for Long Islanders to help fight food insecurity, and they responded with bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food for their neighbors. Hampton Classic Horse Show To Host FEI CSI 5* And 2* Competitions
The Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of the country’s most prestigious hunter-jumper horse shows, will unveil new state-of-the-art all-weather footing in its Grand Prix Ring and a new schedule with FEI CSI 5* and 2* competitions when it returns for its 46th edition, August 28-September 4. The new CSI 5* status means an increase in prize money to more than $1 million, with $410,000 for the Classic’s featured Hampton Classic Grand Prix on Sunday, September 4. New all-weather footing in the Grand Prix Ring will allow for an expanded schedule featuring the 5* and 2* as well as some new divisions. “We are truly excited about hosting a CSI 5* and having the opportunity to expand our schedule,” said Shanette Barth Cohen, the Classic’s Executive Director. “Our new allweather footing enables us
to hold more classes in the Grand Prix Ring and our move to 5* status is sure to attract the best horses and riders from all across the country and beyond.” The Hampton Classic will host a live discussion on Clubhouse to discuss the new schedule and footing on Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. All are invited to participate. The footing is being installed by Travis Gould and his JTWG, Inc. It is engineered using the same state-of-the-art processes that were used for the new footing in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida and Tryon Stadium in Tryon, North Carolina, both of which have received rave reviews. The laboratory design and modeling of the footing for those “UltraCompetition” arenas was done by Bill Hawe, CEO of iEquiTek, LLC, who is

overseeing the project for the Hampton Classic. The state-of-the-art processes being employed for the Hampton Classic by this team will also be used for the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM Finals in Omaha.
“I think this is fantastic news,” said seven-time Hampton Classic Grand Prix champion McLain Ward. “The Hampton Classic has always been one of our sport’s premier events, equal to any Five Star. Now with official Five
Star status plus its new footing that has proven at Wellington to be as good as there is, the Hampton Classic will solidify its position as one of the most outstanding events in the world.” Ultra-Competition arenas are an example of the most extremely fine-tuned riding surfaces. Utilizing lab measurements, coupled with comparisons in the iEquiTek database, formulae are developed to improve certain aspects of the peak performance. The speeds and heights of CSI 5* competitions in general make for a narrow aperture of what is acceptable, even in the best of conditions. CSI 5* competitions may be held in the rain, yet still demand 5* levels of performance. Bill Hawe, from iEquiTek said, “The Hampton Classic is to be commended for its all-in commitment to advancing the state-of-theart for performance, safety
and horse welfare. This helps change the sport for the better. We are very excited to partner with the Hampton Classic on this project.” The Grand Prix Ring is the centerpiece of the Classic’s six show rings. Longines is the Official Timekeeper for the Hampton Classic which will also be adding new divisions such as Low Adult and Children’s Jumpers, Low Adult and Children’s Hunters and 3’6” High Performance Hunters. Nine students from the Wantagh High School Class of 2022 have earned the Seal of Biliteracy, a prestigious award that recognizes their mastery of English and at least one world language. They had to complete and present projects in both languages to earn the designation. Seal of Biliteracy recipients in Spanish were Emma Alexander, Savannah Barreira, Julia Froese, Julia Inayan, Skyla Marchesi, Jenna Rackley and Julianna Rose, while Christopher Morale and Isabella Nocera earned it in Italian. Each student is recognized with a medal as well as a seal on his or her diploma. The students who earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish were taught by Antonio Benito, and those who earned it in Italian were taught by Marisa Dispenza. In a unanimous vote, Senator John E. Brooks was able to pass Senate Bill S.1289-B for the 4th time since he first sponsored it. What makes this time different is the fact that its “same as” bill in the NYS Assembly (A.4978; Englebright) finally passed several days earlier after having been held up in committee during previous legislative sessions. Also known as “Bouy’s Law,” S.1289-B requires veterinarians to provide certain information to animal owners regarding the drugs dispensed to an animal. Such information includes the name and description of the drug, the directions for use, actions to be taken in the event of a missed dose; instructions for proper storage, any common reasonably anticipated adverse effects associated with the use of such drug, and manufacturer precautions and relevant warnings. “For most of us, our pets are members of our families and when they are sick or in pain, we want to know as much as possible about possible treatments and their consequences,” said Senator Brooks. “Since veterinarians are already provided this information, it would seem only common sense to advise pet owners as to all potential side effects of prescribed medications.
