with Cleveland Ballet and a member of the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company since 1990. As part of the master class program students receive an inside look into the dance industry, receive expert critique and develop relationships
with professionals in their chosen field. Thatcher, who has served as assistant to the choreographer within the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, led students in a dance class and spoke to them about the dance industry.

Awards Luncheon Held The Long Island Association of Special Education Administrators (LIASEA) held their annual awards luncheon recently at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. LIASEA is a group of special education administrators who are responsible for programs and services in public and private schools or agencies. Their meetings provide
invaluable opportunities to dialogue with others who possess experience with and knowledge of the issues that challenge special education administrators, teachers, and parents. At this year’s awards luncheon, LIASEA honored educators and students alike. The Awards of Distinction were presented to Brian McIlvain, Director of Employment
and Benefits Advisement Services, SILO. Inc. and Helene Fallon, Project Director, LI Parent Center. Attached are ywo photos of the Award of Distinction winners. Pink Aid Grant and their families while undergoing treatment and/or post-operative care for breast cancer. These services include transportation to and from treatment, wigs and other prosthesis, grocery cards and assistance with household bills. “Pink Aid is proud to support the important assistance offered by Adelphi’s Breast Cancer Program and the bilingual social work and navigation services they provide. We are so pleased that our funding will allow critical support to reach even more women on Long Island,” says Ali Mitchell, the president of Pink Aid Long Island. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer
Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support and information for breast cancer patients, professionals and the community. The hotline can be reached at 800.877.8077. Pink Aid’s mission is to help underserved local women survive breast cancer treatment with support and dignity, to provide screening to women in financial need, and to empower breast cancer survivors to heal by helping and inspiring others. Volunteers Needed
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program seeks breast cancer survivors of all ages, race and ethnicity-men as well as women-to become volunteers. Thus, the program seeks a diverse group of volunteers to reflect the diversity of the people who are calling the hotline. The three-day training
program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays - September 12th, 19th and 26th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Adelphi University in Garden City. This indepth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.
“It is so important for people who call our hotline to speak with someone who has been there,’” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, volunteer and hotline coordinator. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from the Pink AidLI Chapter. This grant helps fund the salary of a bilingual social worker who provides counseling, patient navigation and support services at Nassau University Medical Center and the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to uninsured and underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The grant also allows the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to support non-medical emergent needs for uninsured or underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients

Merrick Reorganization Meeting
Traveling Back in Time Coinciding with their studies on the history of Long Island, fourthgraders at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District traveled back in time to experience the Colonial era. Dressed in long skirts, white aprons, bonnets, caps, knickers, jackets and suspenders, the students explored a myriad of aspects of Colonial life, from the Culper Spy Ring
The Merrick School District held its annual board of education reorganization meeting on July 10th, where trustees Jill Levine and Butch Yamali were officially sworn into their three-year terms.

On Monday, June 19th, at Mad Men Hair Cutters in Wantagh, Brandon achieved his goal. He stated he was “nervous but was glad it was finally over.” He donated 10 inches for a great cause!

John C. McNamara was sworn in as superintendent of schools by district clerk Elaine McGuigan, followed by the nomination and election of trustees Kera McLoughlin as president and Peter Mountanos as vice president. In addition,
the district welcomed newly elected trustees Adam Fisher and Liz Guber, who were each sworn in for a term of three years, as well as newly appointed Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Marc J. Ferris.

Getting the Most Out of College Only 60 percent of college freshmen will graduate within 6 years according to the latest report from the National Center for Educational Statistics. That’s pretty scary stuff for collegebound students and their tuition-paying parents especially if loans are part of the financial formula. Even for those students who make it to graduation, there may be some question as to whether they made the most of their time on campus. As this Northern Michigan University senior reflects, “There I was, about to graduate with some random degree and feeling like I’d wasted my parents money.”

Approximately 5 hours later… Finally, the end was upon us, the grand lighthouse on the hill. Having missed the hours of operation due to our detours en route to Montauk Point, we didn’t have the opportunity to browse the gift shop or climb the tower this time around, although our prior experience with the latter had been, shall we say, less than impressive. While the Fire Island Lighthouse boasts a circular terrace to walk around the top and enjoy the scenic views below, Montauk has more of a ladder jutting up through a small hole in the ceiling, where, if you’re lucky, you can climb two steps - not even to the top - and poke your head out for a split second. Not exactly a full-service “tour,” to be sure. Far more exciting are the rocks surrounding the base of the building, providing picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean as its waves crash along the shoreline. On any given day, you can find tons of people carefully navigating the giant boulders as they make
their way from one side to another. Children, pets, senior citizens… all seem drawn to this spot. From there, we took a drive to several of the private beaches to scope out a nice sunset view. Navy Beach, Outer Beach… all were dotted with signs indicating the fines due if you dared park without the prestigious East Hampton town beach pass. How strictly was this rule enforced after dusk? We didn’t know; but, as the sun began to reach its golden hour, we decided it was worth the risk. And so, we found a rock wall to perch on overlooking the water, and we waited (one eye on the parking lot at all times, of course). Once the last rays had dissipated, we headed into town, the town which had been practically closed down during the last of our pilgrimages. What a difference the summer season makes. Restaurant after restaurant, outdoor patios bustling with music and people enjoying cocktails, stores filled with novelty items and “beachy” merchandise, a summertime

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan paradise to be sure. As the clock ticked to approximately 10 p.m., we of course decided we were slightly hungry once again, and in need of just a small snack for the road. After eventually being seated at one of the aforementioned outdoor patios, we settled in to people watch. Little did we know that the most fascinating spectacle would be surrounding our very own table. On the one side, a young woman argued vehemently with the manager over her credit card charge, demanding it be reversed immediately. On the other, a family with several children was finishing up their meal, when I heard the unmistakeable commotion of a child getting sick, right in the leftovers bag. His darling siblings gathered ‘round to witness the spectacle, while the parents, seemingly unaffected by this, remained calmly seated at the table, finishing their cocktails. Check, please! And that, ladies and gentlemen, was The End of The End for us for that evening. ’Til next time.

Honor Flight Long Island you’d like for yourself or friends and family. The May 6th Honor Flight had 20 WWII veterans and 30 Korean veterans on board. Those photos and videos are available now on the HFLI website. The Reunion for those May 6th veterans, their guardians, friends and family members is being hosted by the American Airpower Museum on Saturday, August 5th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The reunion announcement and details for that event were sent to those participants. The next Honor Flight is scheduled on September 23rd. Eligible veterans will receive the flight information very soon. They have a waiting list,
mostly Korean veterans, but they will certainly make room for any WWII veterans who want to go. Honor Flight continues to look for financial assistance from philanthropists, foundations and those who are in a position to provide monetary support for the cause. Parents who want to instill a love of the arts in their children can help local organizations’ fundraising efforts and even volunteer their time if the opportunity presents itself. Time is at a premium for today’s families. Many households are dualincome, and children may engage in one or more extracurricular activities after school. The challenge often lies in finding ways to spend quality time together as a family. Art can enrich the lives of people young and old, male and female. The arts can introduce adults and children to different cultures and traditions, while also helping them to develop more fully as human beings. While some may feel the benefits of the arts cannot be measured, the nonprofit organization Americans for the Arts notes that kids who are involved in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement than kids who are not involved in the arts. And though mathematics and science may not be the first thing people associate with the arts, kids involved in the arts are four times more likely to participate in math and science fairs than kids who are not involved in the arts.
