Named to Task Force The NEST Food Pantry at NCC has been identified by the New York State Governor’s office as a model site to which other campuses should look for guidance. Nassau Community College faculty members Profs. Sharon Masrour, Valerie Fasanello and Helen Rice - all deeply involved in running The NEST - have been chosen by SUNY Albany to be members of the Food Insecurity Task Force. Additionally, the three professors have been asked to take leadership positions as Co-chairs of the Task Force’s Campus Involvement Committee. The State University of New York recently launched its Food Insecurity Task Force of higher education leaders and students from across the university system, along with experts in the fields of diet and nutrition, campus food service, financial aid, food waste prevention, and nutritional research, among others. The group will build resources and support in alignment with Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s “No Student Goes Hungry Program,” a comprehensive program to provide all students with access to healthy, locally sourced meals from kindergarten to college. our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop
for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.
Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air? Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life. And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ... Nothing, so far as I can tell. There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! On Sunday, August 12th, they are hosting their 2nd Underwater Beach Cleanup. This will be held at Centennial Beach in Port Jefferson starting at 9 a.m. If you love our oceans and want to help keep our coastlines clean, bring your friends and family to help clean up the beach. Also, if you are a certified scuba diver, you can bring your equipment and join those who will go below the surface and clean the beach. Like most of you, I have been spellbound by the daily news regarding the young soccer players and their coach trapped deep underground in one of the many dangerous caves in the area. There was even a point a few days ago where the experts believed it would be too dangerous to move them, and one thought was even to leave them stranded for many weeks until the flood waters subsided. However, like all of you who watched the news, the whole world breathed a huge sigh of relief when the last of them was brought to safety. All of this effort had to be based upon a tremendous amount of courage from all concerned. Thinking about this, it prompted me to write a short piece on the subject of courage … something we all take for granted until it happens to us. Let’s go forward and study this together. While dictionaries can supply us with several definitions, the one that I like the most is: the abilty of the individual to act in a specific manner regardless of the potential outcome. Bridging this back to the mindset of the many divers and Navy Seals who were in charge of the rescue, just think for a moment of the potential actions and consequential results that they had
to puzzle over before making their final decision. Now, it’s time to bridge this thought back to our daily lives and how a high degree and dedication to courage can change our daily lives. I am going to list a few based on my own experience and, after this, I’m sure you will be able to add some of your own. Let’s start ... Courage is: Being 15 years-old and contracting Polio at summer camp and, while in the hospital on the first night, overhearing one of the nurses saying that in the morning I would either be completely free of the disease or be restricted to a life of medicine. That alone took a great deal of courage to believe that everything was right and I would be okay in the morning. I was right. At 14 years-old, coming home from school and being told by your mother that your father had died that morning from a sudden and massive heart attack. It took all the courage I had to make sure my mother and brother would be okay and we would get through this together as a family. To get the news that your older brother fighting in the Korean war was captured and was now a prisoner ... it took several days of blind courage (and many phone
calls) to be told that he was freed, along with several others. What a relief. Much reflection and courage was needed while in the service to be promoted to a team leader. Knowing that I would be responsible for 15 soldiers’ lives in a combat situation ... and they all had faith in your leadership ability. It only took a few moments of thought to realize that I indeed had the courage to lead these troops on. In the end, it all worked out well with those concerned. One of the biggest tests of courage is having the ability to accept the challenges of the “golden years” and gracefully enter that domain without complaints, and having the courage to accept the daily challenges that it surely brings. As a final (yet very personal thought) just prior to sleeping, having the courage to review what happened that day, what was good and things not so good ... then hearing that quiet voice inside of you telling you that things will be better tomorrow, and having the courage to accept that. A bit corny? I don’t think so. Just remember that tomorrow will be the first day of the rest of your life. NEVER give up on your dreams, and always keep a positive attitude. PEACE.

Birch Dedication Birch School in Merrick recently honored the memory of one of its own with the dedication of the Florence Coe Friendship Circle. Coe was a beloved teaching assistant who served numerous roles in the school. She passed in 2015. Coe began her career at Birch in 2001 and quickly established herself as a valuable and committed member of the Birch School staff. Merrick Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick Palma and Florence Coe’s family members were also
in attendance. The Florence Coe Friendship Circle is a beautifully designed area near the Birch School playground area, with newly set pavers, equipped with four friendship benches to provide students with a place to seek out other students looking for friends to play with on any given day. Coe made a donation to the school with the idea of creating a space for children to gather and make new friends. An engraving in the dedication stone reflects the sentiment often shared by Coe: “Because at Birch, we are a family.”

The East Meadow School District Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting on July 5th, with District Clerk Jeanne Puma administering the oaths of office. The meeting opened with Ms. Puma swearing
in Dr. Kenneth A. Card Jr. for his second year as superintendent of schools. Eileen Napolitano was then sworn in as the newest board member before Melissa Tell took an oath for a new three-year term. Following a nomination, Matthew Melnick was
unanimously elected president, while Scott Eckers was voted vice president. As his first duty as president, Mr. Melnick administered the swearing-in of Ms. Puma as district clerk.

With lighting accounting for the largest portion of energy used in commercial buildings — typically around 2530 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy — it is estimated
that in addition to the initial rebate, the district will save approximately 838,683 kilowatt hours and $150,962 a year on its electric bill through these improvements. “I am extremely proud that our district has taken these important steps to conserve energy,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth A. Card Jr. “We are lessening our district’s impact on the environment and at the same time saving valuable taxpayer dollars. This rebate check is evidence that our hard work is paying off – literally!”

PSEG Long Island announced last week that the East Meadow School District is the recipient of $217,901 in rebates due to participating in the PSEG Long Island Commercial Efficiency Program. The district upgraded nearly 20,000 lighting fixtures and replaced them with more energy-efficient LEDs in all nine school buildings.
