More than 190 participants enjoyed a day of golf with colleagues and friends, while supporting The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. The event raised $220,000 to benefit the Cancer Center at Good Samaritan, which provides high quality cancer care and patient navigation. Golf Classic A Success

United States Soldier Kevin Brady traveled from Fort Bragg Army Base to Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. on July 4th for an emotional reunion with Bailey, a stray dog that became his battle buddy while stationed in Afghanistan. Guardians of Rescue raised over $5,000 to arrange for Bailey’s safe return through its “Paws

of War — No Buddy Left Behind” program. Nowzad Dogs in Kabul was able to locate Bailey, in cooperation with Guardians of Rescue, where she was cared for before being shipped to Dubai Kennels. Bailey was quarantined, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and groomed, so that she could be reunited with her

hero and best friend, who had cared for her since she was a puppy. Brady and the elevenmonth-old dog had been separated for two months before seeing each other again at Save-A-Pet. She is currently on her way to her new forever home in Northern California, where Brady and his family reside.

Hazards Of Summer

A few days ago, I found a tick on my arm. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, a tick! These small bloodsucking creatures are the stuff of nightmares for many of Fire Island’s inhabitants. The deer tick, the carrier of Lyme Disease, is arguably the most unsettling. This minuscule monster is known for staying hidden. Many people do not even realize they have been bitten. The deer tick is the smallest of all of the species that crawl around Fire Island. In addition to the notorious red ring of Lyme Disease, ticks can also transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. gotten a tick? Yesterday, as I was unlocking my bike to ride to work, I noticed a tick crawling on the fence post it was chained to. Sure enough, as I looked at the seat of my bike, a ‘questing’ tick was waiting for a meal. These ticks wait on an overhanging leaf or vine until something brushes up against them. Then they latch on and take advantage of their new host. How can you avoid getting ticks? It isn’t easy to tell what shade of clothing is least conducive to fostering ticks. Studies show that wearing dark clothing results in slightly fewer ticks actually on you, but lighter clothing enables

you to see the ticks and ultimately refrain from getting bitten. Check yourself for lingering ticks when you leave their environment and, if at all possible, avoid trekking through their home in the first place. If you do find yourself bitten, it is best to find immediate medical help. It is easier to treat the diseases contracted from ticks right away. It is also very hard to diagnose these ailments at home. This summer, while you are out and about, remember that ticks are an ever-present danger and you cannot be too careful. Always use bugspray, and remember to check yourself for ticks constantly.

Making The Connection By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Fate is a funny thing. You either believe in it or you don’t, and you either allow it to dictate your path in life or you spend the majority of your time fighting against it. The choice is yours… or is it? People seem to have a habit of saying that things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately apparent at the moment, if ever. Timing, circumstance…

whatever the case may be, events have a way of working themselves out in such a way as to follow the trail of cause and effect, of coincidence and irony. And there we are in the middle, left trying to sort it all out. Sure, there are situations you may read more into, in your vain search for some kind of mystical, magical, cosmic connection, but others… well others you just simply can’t deny. They just are, blatantly and undeniably, obvious

for all but the most cynical among us to see – and to appreciate. If only we could see these instances for what they are, while they are occurring. Perhaps we could save ourselves a certain degree of unnecessary stress and aggravation, anguish and upheaval. If only… unfortunately, though, it often takes hindsight to gain that type of perspective. Life as we know it is, quite simply, just never that crystal clear.

Stony Brook University Professor Ellen Pikitch, a renowned expert in marine biology and conservation; Christopher Scott and Elyssa Hopkins, currently students in the Marine Conservation and Policy program in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook, were among the volunteer oyster gardeners gathered at the Tiana Beach Community Oyster Garden, where each received 1000 baby oysters (spat), which they will nurture to maturity. A number of the oyster gardener volunteers were recruited by the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program (ShiRP), which was founded by the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) and its Institute for Ocean Conservation Science. “Restoring Shinnecock Bay requires dedication and a hands-on approach by scientists and residents in our communities,” said Dr. Pikitch, Executive Director of IOCS, ShiRP co-principal investigator (with SoMAS Prof.

I think it will be a great learning experience and fun.” At the end of the season the oyster gardener volunteers will produce their fully matured oysters to be planted by SBU students in special oyster beds, where they will filter water in Shinnecock Bay, improving water quality and helping to fight both brown and red tides. One adult oyster can filter and clean up to 50 gallons of water per day. The ShiRP volunteer oyster gardeners will work under the program, Southold Project in Aquaculture Training (SPAT), which is sponsored by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, the Southampton Town Trustees and Town of Southampton Parks and Recreation Department.

Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby and the entire Hempstead Town Board recently officially landmarked a monument dedicated to Charles Lindbergh and the site of the pioneer’s 1927 solo trans-Atlantic flight aboard the “Spirit of St. Louis.” The Town Board’s approval culminated a concerted effort led by Murray and Goosby to preserve this important piece of Long Island aviation history. Murray and Goosby worked closely with Hofstra student and history enthusiast Adam Sackowitz to protect the future of the monument from any potential developments at the historic site, which is located within the Source Mall property in Westbury. At that site, Lindbergh’s plane took off before landing, 33-and-a-half hours later, in Paris. “We are honored to preserve the Charles Lindbergh monument as a landmark, a harrowed gem of aviation history for Hempstead Town, Long Island and our great nation,” Murray said. “I

thank Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, the Hempstead Town Board, the Landmarks Preservation Commission and Adam Sackowitz for dedicating their time and efforts toward making this dream a reality.” “Being at the center of aviation history, we at Hempstead Town are truly proud to protect the site of Charles Lindbergh’s famous flight,” Goosby said. The Town Board moved to vote on the landmark designation after receiving full support and a recommendation from the Hempstead Town Landmark Preservation Commission on June 11th. Landmark status protects the monument from any developments or construction at the site. To make any alterations to a landmarked monument, property owners would be required to seek approval from the town’s Landmarks Commission. The stone monument is located along a perimeter roadway behind the Source Mall (south of the mall on a grassy patch of land). Additionally, as town

officials worked on granting landmark status to the Lindbergh monument, New York State Assemblyman Ed Ra sponsored a resolution to designate May 20th as “Transatlantic Flight Day in the State of New York.” That resolution was approved by the state Assembly and Senate. “I am delighted to have worked with Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby on preserving the history of Charles Lindbergh’s famous flight,” Ra said. “The story of the first person to fly solo, non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean is known across the world and I am proud that the town has designated Lindbergh’s take-off site as an official landmark here in the Town of Hempstead.” “Charles Lindbergh’s remarkable flight is a cornerstone of Hempstead Town’s 369-year history,” Murray said. “We are proud to do everything in our power to protect that legacy and preserve it for generations to come.”

Pursuing A Partnership The Doshi STEM Program at Nassau BOCES is forming partnerships with some of Long Island’s most prestigious science research facilities, including Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) and the Long Island Matrix of Science and Technology (LIMSAT). These partners will not only help develop the curriculum but will provide students with access to real-world laboratories and leading scientists. “We’re excited by the educational opportunities that would result from a partnership with three local leaders in STEM-focused industries,” said Dr. Thomas Rogers, District Superintendent of Nassau BOCES. “Introducing youngsters to Long Island’s rich science and technology resources will better prepare them to compete in an increasingly demanding high-tech global market.” The Doshi STEM Program at Nassau BOCES, which will launch in September, was created in partnership with the Doshi Family Foundation to promote equity in the availability of strong STEM educational opportunities for Long Island students. The program immerses students in science and mathematics courses taught through an interdisciplinary curriculum. Using real-life experiences, students build their background knowledge in the core New York State and/or AP curricula and participate in a variety of projects. It is open to incoming ninth graders who have been identified by their districts as having a passion for science or math and who are capable of participating in a rigorous learning environment. “Nassau BOCES partnership in the Doshi STEM Program on Long Island will increase the reach the Foundation has in education and allow them to continue to build strong STEM programs and provide opportunities for students in STEM,” stated Dr. Leena Doshi, founder of the Doshi Family Foundation.

The organizations hope to work together, and through the Long Island Regional STEM Hub, to provide students with an enriching STEM curriculum and vital connections to industry and research leaders across Long Island. These connections will provide students with real-world knowledge as to how their courses of study are applied in the field. Students will be able to utilize the physical and professional resources of Long Island’s leaders in science and technology and gain exposure to the current STEM landscape, providing them with valuable career experience at an early age. “Motivating students to do well in STEM studies, and encouraging them to pursue careers in science and technology is important to all of us,” said Ken White, Founding Director of the Portal to Discovery and manager of BNL’s Office of Educational Programs. “Our nation, New York, and the Long Island regional economy are all boosted by technological innovation and our high tech businesses and national laboratories need a strong STEM workforce to succeed. The Lab will provide many hands-on science and engineering opportunities that will excite students in the Doshi STEM Program.” “As a world leader in genetics education, CSHL’s educational programs introduce students to the newest ideas, discoveries and technologies in biology and life sciences. Already providing hands-on science experiences to more than 30,000 Long Island kids each year, CSHL’s DNA Learning Center is excited to be a part of this partnership, which will provide a best practices model for high school STEM education in Nassau and beyond,” said DNALC Staff Geneticist Dr. Bruce Nash. LIMSAT is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to introduce science to young people in a way that will ignite their curiosity, understanding, and enduring interest in science, technology, engineering

and mathematics, and to enhance and enrich the role of the regional school systems. LIMSAT and Brookhaven National Lab work in a partnership, The Portal for Discovery, and offer academic year and summer programs to students of all ages in a variety of settings. “LIMSAT is excited to bring our expertise in science education and the development of innovative STEM programs to the Doshi STEM Program at Nassau BOCES,” stated Harriet Copel, Executive Director of LIMSAT.
