The $500 “Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize” - which will be awarded to the best work in the show - is named in honor of Southold painter Thomas Currie-Bell (1873-1946). A native of Scotland who trained extensively in Great Britain, Currie-Bell came to America in 1929 and settled in Southold, from where he traveled up and down the east coast, painting portraits and local scenery. Senior Athletes Recognized East Meadow High School Class of 2014 senior athletes were recently honored for their successes both on and off the field at the school’s Senior Athletic Awards Night. The evening, hosted by the school’s athletic department staff, celebrated individual and team achievements. Families of senior athletes, district officials and members of the East Meadow High School Parent Athletics Club attended the event, moderated by Athletic Director Kevin Regan. Mr. Regan, along with members of his coaching staff, presented students with scholarships and awards
as well as participation certificates, and applauded students for their hard work throughout their high school careers. He also noted that 23 of East Meadow High School’s 26 sports teams were named
New York State ScholarAthlete Teams. The evening concluded with the annual announcement of the Athletic Wall of Fame inductees. The district congratulates the students on their successes.

The Days You Remember By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
There’s something to be said for nostalgia, even the not-so-distant-past variety. I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact
occurred many yesterdays ago. Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,
much has changed. The world as a whole, to start, straight on down to the local neighborhood streets we used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reflect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

the east end of Long Island were invited to participate in the exhibition, as long as they either ‘resided on’ or ‘worked on’ the North Fork. Entries will be scrutinized by the two jurors; Sean Cleary, Chief Operating Officer of the well-respected Phillips Auction House of New York City; and Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society and author of several books and catalogs on the history and art of Long Island. Out of the submissions, only 20 works will be selected to be included in the “North Fork Annual” exhibition. It will be from those works that the purchase prize winner will be selected. The work selected as the winner of the prize will join the permanent collection of
the historical society. The winner will be announced at the opening reception for the exhibition, which is being held on Friday, August 8th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. All of the remaining artworks selected for the exhibition will be available for sale at that time and for the duration of the exhibition. Four children had the opportunity to let their parents know exactly what their military service means to them during an emotional discussion held today at the Rosen Family Wellness Center, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. In anticipation of the July 4th celebration, Camilo Serrano, 9, of East Meadow, told a gathering of relatives, health system employees and reporters how difficult it was to be separated from his father, Juan. From 2000-2009, Juan served in the Marine Corps, engaged in Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Today, Juan works for the health system’s World Trade Center Health Program in Rego Park, Queens, a position he’s held since October, 2012. As poised as any public figure could hope to be, Camilo told his audience, “My father and all of the men and women in uniform are true heroes. Today is a good day to remember that freedom is not free, and all sacrifices made in the quest for freedom are one more example of who we are… the best nation in the world.” Alina Aronoff, 8, of Forest Hills, Queens, expressed similar sentiments about her mother, Katrina Aronoff, who continues to serve as a boatswain’s mate, petty officer 3rd class. She wrote, “In the military, my mom helps other people by protecting them from drowning.” Her little sister, Evelyn, 5, summed it up by saying, “My mom is the best. She can be a hero.” When she’s not on reserve duty, Katrina serves cancer patients as a radiation therapist. Serving as the philosopher of the group was Binhi Serana, 13, who wrote, “Dad told me about terrorists. What I understand is that terrorists make people afraid to play. Dad told me that I will understand them when I grow up. I

They call me their “experiment,” but it seems like they knew what they were doing. After all, I’m still alive! Although it would be great if each baby came with an owner’s manual, that is not the case. There is no personalized guide to raising a life. That is why I have the utmost respect for my parents. As my mom grew up in the Ukraine, she was not afforded the generous opportunities that I am. Her upbringing has taught me to seize every chance. When the opportunity arose for me to write in a newspaper, she pushed me to take it. All of this has built my character and molded me into the person I need to be. In order to conquer the world as I move through my life, I try to apply the

From an early age, I have been raised with a certain code of morals. I have always been guided toward “being the bigger man” and making smart choices. I’ve always been expected to look out for my little brother, act as a second man of the house, and protect those who need protection. This code of conduct has been instilled in me through the diligent work of my parents. Although they have always made sure I was capable of handling myself, they are not helicopter parents. They kept their distance, preferring to test my competence rather than nurture a dependent child. I like to think that this style worked out. I attribute my personal character to their efforts. I was their first child.

History Bee Champ Jonas E. Salk Middle School student Jared Schwartz placed No. 11 in the National History Bee’s 2014 National Finals competition in Atlanta. Students Andrew Jacobs and Shreyas Sagi also qualified to compete in the National History Bee, which challenges students in grades six through eight on their knowledge
of presidential facts, world and American history and cultural literacy. History teacher Samantha McKevitt said she is excited that three Salk Middle School students qualified for the contest at the regional competition in Orange, N.J., in April. “This was the first year we entered the competition,
and we are all so proud of Jared for doing so well in the nationals,” she said. During the school’s moving up celebration, all three students received special awards for their achievements. The district congratulated Jared on this accomplishment and wishes him much success as he enters high school this fall. BOARD OF ED - On July 1st, members of the Wantagh School District Board of Education, during the annual reorganization meeting, unanimously elected President Anthony Greco and Vice President Ann-Marie Sturniolo. Dedicated Service Retiring Board President Michael Soethout was honored for his dedicated service to the Wantagh School District community and students during the June 19th Board of Education meeting at Wantagh High School. Mr. Soethout served three years on the board and one year as president. During a reception in his
honor, PTA representatives, as well as representatives of the Wantagh Supervisors Association and School Administrators Association of Wantagh, presented Mr. Soethout with plaques and gifts. Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg also congratulated him on his dedication to the Wantagh community. “For 1,095 days, you displayed
tremendous compassion and devotion to the students of this district,” Ms. Goldberg said. “You truly gave us your all.” Mr. Soethout noted that he wanted his tenure with the Board of Education to be about student education. “It has been a privilege to serve the community,” he said.
