The Levittown School District Board of Education and administration reorganized for the official start of the 2015-2016 school year at its July 1st meeting. So Operation: Explore NYC on Foot was a success. Mostly. This time, we decided to mix a little mass transit in to maximize our time spent experiencing the cultural offerings. You would think that would have eliminated some of the mileage; but, at day’s end, my handy app determined that we had still somehow managed to cover 25,695 steps, or 10.71 miles. Just a walk in the park. Literally. The thing about mass transit is that it doesn’t travel through Central Park. Shocking, I know. So, between our two trips clear across the entire width, plus plenty of aimless meandering down paths that, apparently, don’t travel in any particular direction, well, the miles definitely added up.

Luckily, this time, I was smart enough to wear comfortable, albeit flat, shoes. No unscheduled Duane Reade stops for us this time around! But still, after about eight hours of standing, walking, climbing… the searing pain in the ball of your foot is pretty much the same, flip flops or no. By the time we had explored Strawberry Fields, The Dakota, Belvedere Castle, the Shakespeare Garden and the Great Lawn, it was time for a snack. This was followed by a solid three hours perusing the European paintings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, circling through gallery after gallery, until those incredibly uncomfortable-looking benches began to look pretty cushy. Back through the Park we headed, this time passing the Bethesda Terrace and

Fountain, the Bow Bridge, and winding up at the famed Central Park Boathouse Restaurant. Knowing we were cutting it a little close, with no reservation, we hovered hopefully right as the dinner service began. Thankfully, we landed a prime spot overlooking the lake. As we finished up, we had precisely 45 minutes to make our way out of the Park, across to the other side and down about a dozen blocks to Lincoln Center, where we had tickets to the American Ballet Theatre’s production of Cinderella. Doable. Sort of. As we ran across the plaza to the Metropolitan Opera House, change of shoes in hand, the clock struck 7:30 p.m. Inside, a long line stretched through the lobby with dozens of patrons waiting at the Will Call window to pick up their tickets. Just. Made. It.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is pleased to announce the launch of its new monthly support groups for caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. These two groups are intended to provide members with a support system to share feelings and common experiences. Meetings will be held in both West Babylon and Oceanside, New York. The first meeting for the West Babylon group will take place the last Thursday of every month beginning July 30th at the East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, located at 134 Great East Neck Rd. Meetings for the Oceanside group are currently being held every Saturday morning from 9

to 11 a.m. at the Oceanside First United Methodist Church, located at 2915 Davidson Street. These groups provide participants with a support system; information on care and community resources; the opportunity to express feelings, thoughts and common experiences; the opportunity to exchange coping skills with one another; and ideas to help maintain the health and well-being of group members. Group facilitators have been personally trained by ADRC and will be supported by them in their efforts. ADRC runs a total of seven support groups, which are affiliated with 27 other support groups located throughout the greater New York metropolitan area.

Through these groups, they serve approximately 275 families. ADRC provides caregivers with information, referral, guidance, and support. Family caregivers are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and should not have to stand alone. To RSVP to the West Babylon support group, please contact Sarah Rogan at 631.422.4800, ext. 140. Diamond Award Winner During the Nassau Baseball All-County Dinner, Levittown’s Division Avenue High School graduate Anthony Papa was the recipient of the Don Lang Diamond Award, given to the best position player in Nassau County. Anthony was a threeyear starter for the Dragons, helping the

program win two County Championships and this year’s Long Island Championship. In three years, Anthony produced a batting average of .396, 100 hits, 94 RBI, 94 Runs scored, 21 doubles, 8 triples, 6 HR and 25 Stolen Bases. This season he batted .404 , 40 hits, 36 RBI, 37 Runs scored, 6 doubles, 5 triples, 2 HR

and 11 stolen bases. In addition, Anthony is a three-time All-County selection, as well as a twotime All-State designee. He will attend LIU Post next fall on a baseball scholarship. The Levittown coaching staff and administration congratulate Anthony and wish him continued success.

The Nassau County Lacrosse officials Association selected the MacArthur High School boys lacrosse team as recipients of the 2015 Joseph “Frenchie” Julien Sportsmanship Award for making sportsmanship an integral part of the school’s overall program. According to the NCLOA website, www.NCLOA. org, the Canadian-born Joseph “Frenchie” Julien became legendary for his involvement as an official, instructor and later a national administrator for the sport of lacrosse for over three generations

before retiring in 1971. Frenchie was best known for his 15 years as the Lacrosse Chief Referee, first for the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and then for the NCAA when he took over administrative control of the sport. As Chief Referee, he supervised more than 500 lacrosse officials across the country and was inducted into the National Hall of Fame in 1966 for contributions as both a player and an official. Frenchie also wrote the Lacrosse Rule Book and revised it each year to bring it up to date.

He is also attributed to the invention of many of the officials’ signals that are used on the field today. Each year, the NCLOA membership selects one varsity, junior varsity and junior high/modified lacrosse team in Nassau County to receive this prestigious award, honoring the teams who emulate the the best form of sportsmanship on and off the field. The Levittown School District congratulates the team on this outstanding accomplishment.

Under the direction of Lisa Levenberg and Paige Hardison, The Levittown Chorus was invited to perform the national anthem for the New York Mets game at Citi Field on June 11th. The performance group is a combination of both Division Avenue and

MacArthur high school choral students, and it is the first time that the group has performed in this type of venue. District Director of Music Vincent D’Ulisse explained that the group’s selection was based on an audition CD sent to Citi Field earlier in the year.

Wantagh High School student-musician Sam Hutt has been selected to perform in the 2015 AllNational Honor Ensemble for concert band. Sponsored by the

National Association for Music Education, Sam will play the trombone with the top high school musicians in the U.S. at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn. on October 28 and

Distant Memories Swim Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is pleased to announce that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 12th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Tuesday, July 28th, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess

of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s disease and their unpaid caregivers. Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:15 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across Northport Bay to Knollwood Beach in Huntington - a distance of approximately 2.0 nautical miles (less than 3 miles). The swim will also help

raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. “Bryan is a champion for those with a diagnosis of

Alzheimer’s disease. He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “He has continuously expressed the sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.” Over 5 million people in this country are currently living with Alzheimer’s

Disease, with more than 200,000 individuals under the age of 65. The social, economical, and emotional impact of this disease can be devastating to individuals and families. “It is my hope that substantial funds will be raised to assist Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center in providing for people with dementia and other related disorders,” Mr. Proctor said.
