What a better combination is there than protecting the environment and helping children with special needs? Inspired by that two-fold imperative, Supervisor Anthony J. Santino, Councilman Ed Ambrosino and Councilman Anthony D’Esposito joined a group of children with special needs at the Malibu Beach Club in Lido Beach to kick off a beachfront can and bottle recycling initiative that will help the environment and support programs for youngsters with special needs. The town officials celebrated summer by announcing that they have placed can and bottle

recycling containers at all town beaches, utilizing the deposit fees collected from redeeming the beverage containers to support services and activities at the town’s heralded Camp ANCHOR through the ANCHOR Program Fund, Inc. Launching the new effort, young campers participated in a recycling themed “Kan-Jam” competition, tossing bottles and cans into recycling bins which were decorated by the kids. Also attending the press event were Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad, Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin and Malibu Summer Camp Operator Butch Yamali. “While soaking in the

sun and relaxing at our beautiful Hempstead Town beaches this summer, you can help the environment and children with special needs,” Santino said. “By taking a moment to dispose of your bottles and cans in one of our designated recycling bins, beachgoers will be keeping our planet clean while supporting a group of special young people who are served by Camp ANCHOR.” Through the summer beach recycling initiative, all proceeds generated from the recycled bottles and cans will benefit the Camp ANCHOR Program for children with special needs. Santino unveiled

the new bins, decorated with posters created by several campers who used their artistic talents to educate the public on the importance of recycling. “Thank you to our campers for their hard work in making these wonderful drawings to spread awareness of the importance of recycling,” D’Esposito said. “This recycling initiative will ensure that recyclables are disposed of correctly, while also benefiting the children of Camp ANCHOR, truly a winwin,” Ambrosino said. Following the announcement, two teams of campers competed in a recycling game similar to the

popular “Kan-Jam,” demonstrating how easy and fun it is to recycle, as well as the importance of helping young people with special needs. The stakes were high, as the winning team was to receive ice cream for its victory in the recycling game. But thanks to the dedicated efforts of these campers, all participants of the contest received free ice cream courtesy of Malibu Beach Club and Carnival Ice Cream. The artwork created by the campers will appear on bins at many of the town’s beaches. The blue recycling bins also include signage that informs beachgoers that all proceeds from the

recyclables will go to support Camp ANCHOR. Beachgoers will find the recycling receptacles at the following Town of Hempstead beaches: Town Park Point Lookout, Lido Beach Town Park, Lido West Town Park, Town Park at Sands, Atlantic Beach Estates and East Atlantic Beach. “When it comes to our summer recycling program, everyone comes out a winner,” Santino concluded. “‘Pitch in’ to help children with special needs and the environment by ‘pitching’ your recyclables into one of our bins.”

True Colors By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if no one was watching? What would you say if no one was listening? These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through. This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden. They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style. To each his or her own,

Think before you speak, pause before you act; it is always more advisable to attempt to diffuse a situation rather than add fuel to the fire. Especially with the current state of affairs in this nation, more care needs to be taken to respect one another, to pause a moment and appreciate the fact that, no matter the differences in our political, religious or societal views, we are all cut from the same cloth – and a little thing called humanity goes a long way. Whether engaging face to face, via text message or some other written method designed to foster

miscommunication, or – best of all – on the pages of various social media sites which seem to double as a breeding ground for contentious exchanges between so-called “friends,” common courtesy should not be dispensed with. So, take heed the next time someone is looking to engage. Draw in a deep breath, form a coherent thought, give it a second… and decide whether expressing your opinion is worth the potential repercussions. Sometimes, those true colors are not so black and white as we may think. Remember, when you mix all the colors of the rainbow together, you are left with a gray, muddled mess.

Amid a sea of proud parents, teachers, faculty and administrators, sixthgraders in the Merrick School District celebrated the culmination of their time at Birch, Chatterton and Levy Lakeside schools with moving up ceremonies. Each ceremony opened with the procession of the graduates to Sir Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” after which the schools’ student council president reflected upon the laughter, smiles, fun and learning experiences they had shared over the last seven years. Class of 2016 representatives relayed stories about firstday jitters, class trips, activities, lessons learned and volunteering in the community. They also recognized the many teachers, administrators, parents and fellow graduates who had helped make their experiences memorable. In his address to the graduates, Board of Education President Butch Yamali thanked the teachers and administrators for their devotion to the students and congratulated the sixth-graders on their hard work and dedication over the years. “On behalf of the Merrick Board of Education, we are very proud of the graduating class, the administration and the staff from each school,” he said. “We are so happy that you all made it this far, and we know you all have a bright future ahead of you.” Each ceremony was highlighted by the distribution of awards and scholarships to students based on academic

It was an evening of pride and excitement as 268 Wantagh High School seniors celebrated a longawaited milestone during the district’s 61st annual commencement exercises held at Nassau Community College on June 23rd. The board of education, administration and faculty led the black and gold clad seniors down the isle and to their seats as the high school band played “Pomp and Circumstance,” under the direction of Mindy Dragovich. After a salute to the flag led by General Organization co-presidents Emily Latiff and Brendan von Runnen, student conductors Lauren Farrell and Chris Mountanos were invited to conduct the high school band for the last time during the playing of the national anthem. High School Principal Carolyn Breivogel extended a warm welcome to the Class of 2016 and their guests. She reminded the graduates, “your character and name are your most prized possessions.”

Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg, using the metaphor of a ball of yarn, explained that there will be many milestones and twists. “The greatest twist is the unraveling of the line into the real world,” she said. In addition, Board President Ann-Marie Sturniolo offered her top 10 list of advice, urging the students to thank their parents, practice having an open mind, to take chances, know that character, integrity and respect are earned and more. A comedic and proverbial trip down memory lane by senior class co-presidents Christopher Mountanos and Rachel Obergh reminded the class of how far they have come through the support of one another. Ralph Spagnolo, president of the Wantagh Foundation for Educational Excellence, and Laura Memisha, Wantagh Scholarship Fund vice president, then presented select seniors with scholarships, thus, continuing the tradition of honoring educational

achievement. Salutatorian Sophia Liu then took the podium and posed the question, “What have we, as individual students sitting here, done to deserve this life?” She continued by urging the students to, “Prove to yourself and the world that you deserved the privilege by being the best you can possibly be.” Valedictorian Lauren Bednor then encouraged her peers to do a self-check once in a while and to reach for balance in their lives. “Are we maintaining a balance and staying grounded?” she asked. “This is just as important as anything else we strive for.” After Ms. Goldberg and Ms. Sturniolo certified that the seniors had met the standards for graduation, the graduates were called one by one to receive their diplomas and become the district’s newest alumni. The board of education and administration extend best wishes of happiness and success to the Class of 2016.

Kennedy Commencement Members of the John F. Kennedy High School community in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District gathered early on June 26th at the NYCB Theater at Westbury to celebrate its graduating class. Student Class President Steven Obadiah had positive message for his peers. “We have a class full of winners and I am honored to have worked closely

with many of you,” he said of the class’ philanthropic accomplishments. Salutatorian Rachel Mashal offered the following advice to her fellow graduates should they face obstacles in the next stage of their lives. “Remember your passion and never give up on what you love,” she said. “Be a leader and stick up for what you believe in.” Valedictorian Samantha Klein emphasized

that graduates should “remember to focus on joy” in their lives and not rely on status or material things to make themselves happy. “The next step in our lives may be challenging, but we all have the strong foundation of the Cougar Nation underneath us as a supporting network as we are separated from Long Island – and Town Bagel for the first time,” she jested.

Fifth-graders from Barnum Woods, Bowling Green, McVey, Meadowbrook and Parkway elementary schools in the East Meadow School District reflected upon their elementary memories and looked forward to their middle school experiences with

moving up ceremonies on June 23rd. The principals at each school congratulated the students on their hard work, devotion and accomplishments over the past five years. They encouraged the fifthgraders to take advantage of what the middle school

has to offer, and to be thirsty for knowledge and curious about all of life’s possibilities. The district congratulates its fifthgrade graduating class and wishes them happiness and many new opportunities as they move on to middle school.

Students Move Up Eighth-graders of Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools in the East Meadow School District celebrated the conclusion of their past three years with moving up ceremonies on June 22nd. As the schools’ vocal jazz ensembles performed, a sea of red gowns assembled to the cheers and praise of families, friends, teachers and administrators. In his address, Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo encouraged the Class of 2016 to make the right decisions and build upon their experiences in athletics, the arts, music and extracurricular activities as they head to high school. “As superintendent of schools, I join your families, teachers, friends and administrators in applauding your success,” Mr. Campo said. “We are all proud of you, as you should be proud of yourselves and know your hard work has brought you to this day of recognition. You deserve it.” Following his speech,

middle school class representatives reflected upon their milestones and memories from the past three years. They also encouraged their fellow graduates to broaden their horizons and expand upon their experiences in school as well as in life. Officiating his 11th moving up ceremony at the school, Woodland Middle School Principal James Lethbridge spoke fondly of the dedication, perseverance and growth that the Class of 2016 had experienced during their time at Woodland. “The middle school years are some of life’s most memorable moments, and I want you to think about the experiences you’ve gained,” he said. “You’ve grown physically, emotionally, intellectually and socially since your arrival at Woodland in 2013 as sixth-graders. Apply what you have learned here as you head to the next chapter of your lives.” At W.T. Clarke Middle School, Principal Stacy Breslin recalled fond

memories with the eighthgrade graduates while reminding them to stay consistent. “You have been consistent in your efforts, kindness and generosity over the past three years,” she said. “It is your consistent performance and dependable nature that will bring you continued success as you move forward to the next phase of your life.” During the ceremonies, Vanessa Froehlich from Woodland Middle School and Sanjana Ahmed and Abishek Ravindran from W.T. Volunteers Needed The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is seeking to diversify its volunteer base by especially inviting young women and women of color who have had breast cancer to become part of its volunteer corps.

“Our goal is to be there for all women with breast cancer concerns,” says Alida Rubenstein, the program’s volunteer/ hotline coordinator. “That means that our volunteer base needs to be as diverse as the people who are calling us.” Rubenstein

says that young and younger women are calling the hotline and it is helpful for them to be able to speak with young women who have been through what they are experiencing. The 3-session free training will be held

on three consecutive Wednesdays in September: September 14, 21 and 28, from 5 to 8 pm. “We’ve streamlined our training,” says Rubenstein, “to make it easier for busy young women to participate.” Once the women complete their training,

they are able to select hours that fit into their schedules. Their jobs will be to answer the hotline and provide information and emotional support to callers. They can also do outreach at community events. For more information

Clad in blue and maroon caps and gowns, hundreds of East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high school graduates were joined by honored parents, family members, faculty and administrators to celebrate the peak of their academic journeys with commencement ceremonies on June 26th. Filing into the traditional strains of Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” the seniors assembled on their respective schools’ football fields to the applause and cheers of welcomed guests in the stands. In his address, Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo acknowledged the seniors for their hard work that had guided them to this place of distinction, recognition and accomplishment. He expressed his hopes that as they become the district’s newest alumni, they would take the knowledge and experiences gained over the past 13 years and embark on new horizons. “Your library of knowledge and experience will help you through adult life,” he said. “The hard work that brought you to

this wonderful day must continue as you travel in life.” The valedictorians and salutatorians of both classes created one last memory with their fellow graduates by reminiscing about fond high school memories. They also encouraged them to thank their biggest supporters and embrace the uncertainty that the world has to offer. East Meadow High School Principal Richard Howard congratulated the Class of 2016 for not only achieving outstanding academic, athletic, artistic and musical accomplishments, but also breaking a school record by having nine sets of twins in one graduating class. “I think here today at East Meadow, we have a record that will never occur again,” he said. “From February 14th, 1998 through November 30th, 1998, eight sets of twins were born and somehow found their way to East Meadow High School’s graduating class of 2016. And as if eight weren’t enough, on July 1st, 2014, we welcomed the

Fuentes sisters into our East Meadow family.” Across the district, W.T. Clarke High School Principal Timothy Voels commended the seniors for their academic successes, community service efforts and passions, while also wishing them a lifetime of happiness. “My wish for you is that you find happiness in whatever you choose to do,” he said. “May your successes be more numerous than your setbacks, and [may you] ultimately experience less stress than contentment.” Concluding his speech, Mr. Voels asked the graduates-to-be to venture out into the world with pride, holding on to the knowledge that they’ll forever be Rams. After receiving their diplomas and moving their tassels to the left, the Class of 2016 tossed their caps in the air, rejoicing with friends and family. The district congratulates both classes and wishes them happiness, prosperity and greatness as they embark on their new journeys.

This year’s contest is open to the first 32 online entrants and the top prize will be $3,000. Expected to compete are past champions Leif Engstrom, a three-time winner, and Balaram Stack, who won the contest in 2012. This accomplished pair will be pushed by last year’s runner-up T.J. Gumiela and Richie Bogart, who has also claimed a podium place in previous years. Of course, even when the top surfers aren’t in the water there will be plenty to enjoy. A contest for younger surfers will begin at 8 a.m. on July 16th and the kids always draw

gasps from the crowds for their skill and their hard-charging approach to surfing. (Remember: a six-foot wave is double overhead when you’re three feet tall.) Additional surf-centered events will include not-for-profit outings for Adelphi University’s Camp Abilities and the Henry Viscardi School, whose students cope with severe physical challenges. These outings represent a chance for disabled individuals to share in the thrill of the ocean in the company of experienced instructors. Cliff Skudin, Will’s brother and also a professional surfer, has a master’s degree in special education, and both siblings believe sharing the sport of surfing lays down the foundation for the rest of the event and encapsulates the true meaning of New York Surf Week.

Not all the fun will require pulling on a rash guard, of course. There will be a vendors’ village on the Long Beach Boardwalk between Edwards and National Boulevards during the days, and many surf films will be screened for the first time on Long Island on the evening of July 14th at the Bridgeview Yacht Club, 80 Waterfront Boulevard, Island Park. Another improved feature of 2016 Surf Week will derive from the decision to move the annual concert and skateboard contest to Long Beach’s new skate park. While previous skate showdowns were entertaining events held on portable mini-ramps, Skudin says moving the contest to the Recreation Center facility was an easy decision. “The contest was always fun,” Skudin said. “But this year we’re

The Levittown School District honored former Board of Education trustee Kevin Regan Sr. during the July 5th dedication of the Kevin Regan Sr. Memorial Sports Center located at Levittown Memorial Education Center’s athletic field. Attended by family, friends, district faculty and community the event was an opportunity to memorialize Mr. Regan for his contributions to and unwavering support for Levittown’s students. During his blessing, Father Ralph Sommer

described Kevin Regan Sr. as a man who had faith and love for the community. “Every time you walk across the field, think of Kevin and honor him by acting in the noble way he lived his life,” he said. Board of Education Vice President Peggy Marenghi described Mr. Regan as “larger than life” and a person whose focus was on a healthy and safe lifestyle. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald also noted that his focus was purely about doing what was good for

the community and the children of Levittown. Wife Joann Regan then cut the red ceremonial ribbon as family members looked on. She described her husband as someone who had many names for many individuals, but was always a person who wanted to put children first. “The family and I have come to realize how many lives Kevin, Sr. touched,” she said. “Whether a friend or family member, thanks for being here today.”
