The End. {Part I} This past 4th of July weekend, my friend and I decided to take a road trip out to Montauk Point. Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go. Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least. At one point, as traffic
crept to a complete standstill, my dear Siri piped up and suggested an “alternate” route, one that would allegedly save 25 minutes from the journey. Not having had the best of luck in the past with these detours, I was initially hesitant. But, looking ahead at the long line of vehicles, I figured, what was the harm. Approximately 45 minutes later, and two side trips through the residential roads of Bridgehampton, and then East Hampton, we emerged back on Montauk Highway, back in the same line of traffic. So much for that. After (finally) arriving at the famous Lobster Roll luncheonette, we were met with the expected hour-long

wait, somewhat alleviated by spending time taking pictures in front of the original sign and marveling at some of the patrons attempting to navigate the pebble-filled parking lot in high heels. The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so. We finished up and headed on the next leg of our journey, the famous lighthouse, the self-proclaimed “End of the World.” Coming next week: The End. {Part II}

Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers
The last graduating class born in the 20th century has left the Cougar den of John F. Kennedy High School. “For 50 years, John F. Kennedy has forged a tradition of excellence based on the core values of scholarship, integrity and service,” said Assistant Principal Gerard Owenburg. “For five decades Kennedy’s graduating seniors have entered the next phase of life having experienced an academic program of the highest standards and a school community that focuses on helping students understand the value of making meaningful contributions in our world.” Class President Phallan Grossman reminded
classmates that it wouldn’t be popularity that they think of when reflecting on their time at Kennedy. “But by the relationships we forged, how we treated each other and most importantly, the memories that we made,” she said. In her valedictorian speech, Alixandra Wilens stressed the importance of perseverance as she and fellow classmates embark on this next chapter of their lives. “We have the ability to be unique. I believe that life gives us the potential for happiness but also that such joy is achieved only after a barrier is broken down. That satisfaction comes through hard work and commitment.” Salutatorian Rebecca Stekol sought to inspire
her classmates in her speech. “Always seek to learn, to constantly search for new ways to broaden your mind and open your heart, create a path that expands and that twists in different directions as you discover new interests that captivate you. Be spontaneous but also be driven.” Lastly, board trustee Gina Piskin, also the mother of a Class of 2017 graduate, spoke personally of the relationships her son has made throughout the years. “You are caring, generous, spirited individuals who have already made your mark on the world in so many ways and mostly likely will continue to do so.”
Elementary Students Move Up Fifth-graders from Barnum Woods, Bowling Green, McVey, Meadowbrook and Parkway elementary schools in the East Meadow School District reflected upon their elementary memories and looked forward to their middle school experiences with moving up ceremonies on
June 22nd. The principals at each school commended the students on their hard work, devotion and accomplishments over the past six years. They encouraged the graduates to take advantage of what the middle school has to offer, and to be thirsty for knowledge and

curious about all of life’s possibilities. The district congratulates its fifthgrade graduating class and wishes them happiness and many new opportunities as they move on to W.T. Clarke and Woodland middle schools.

Graduates of the Merrick School District were beaming with pride as parents, teachers and administrators celebrated the academic milestone of the Levy Lakeside, Chatterton and Birch Classes of 2017 with moving up ceremonies on June 20th, 21st and 22nd, respectively. Each ceremony opened with the procession of the sixth-graders to Sir Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” followed by each school’s color guard leading the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Taking the podium, each school’s student council representatives reminisced about the shared learning experiences, laughter, memories and unbreakable bonds formed with friends and faculty over the last seven years. They also recognized the many teachers, administrators, parents and fellow graduates who contributed to their favorite moments of elementary school. Board of Education President Dr. Pamela
Banks congratulated the sixth-graders on their achievements and encouraged them to embrace all the wonderful opportunities offered in middle school. “On behalf of the Board of Education, we commend your hard work and dedication over the last seven years,” she said. “We encourage you all to join clubs, activities, musical groups and sports as you begin your new chapter at Merrick Avenue Middle School.” Each ceremony was highlighted by the distribution of awards to students based on academic growth, character and club involvement, including the President’s Award for Educational Excellence and Achievement. All students reflected on their years in the district and the next chapter of their lives with moving up skits and musical numbers. As tradition for every graduating class, the Merrick Faculty Association presents donations in honor of the sixth-grade graduates. This year’s donations were made
to the Children’s Medical Center at WinthropUniversity Hospital, nonprofit Reason2Smile and the Robbie Levine Foundation, for Birch, Chatterton and Levy Lakeside respectively. Before conferring the diplomas, each principal spoke about the students’ outstanding academic, social and emotional triumphs that had shaped them into competent, intellectual and compassionate individuals. As the sixthgrade graduates transition to middle school, school administrators hope they continue to be positive, hold onto the fond memories, and welcome new, exciting and enriching experiences. The district congratulates the Class of 2017 for filling their elementary chapter with extraordinary accomplishments and wishes them a lifetime of happiness as they begin the next chapter at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the fall.

The prestigious When Work Works Award is part of the Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM’s) When Work Works project, a national initiative that helps employers become more successful by transforming the way they view and adopt effective and flexible workplaces. The award recognizes employers of all sizes across the country that are excelling at offering a variety of top-rated employee initiatives such as work-life fit policies, flexible scheduling and transition to parenthood programs. The award goes beyond work-life programs and includes initiatives that address the additional evidence-based aspects of effective workplaces, such as opportunities for learning, a culture of respect and trust, and job autonomy. “The agency is truly excited to once again receive this prestigious acknowledgement which further attests
to our organizations efforts to maintain and achieve the highest of business standards,” said Jamie Bogenshutz, Executive Director of YES Community Counseling Center. YES’ work in the community since 1977 has focused on assisting children, families and adults who may be struggling with a wide range of challenges. Fifty employees from Comcast NBCUniversal’s Advertising Sales Team volunteered recently at four ACLD community residences. ACLD (Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities) is a nonprofit organization supporting children and adults with autism, learning and developmental disabilities. The Comcast NBCUniversal employees volunteered their time and talents as part of Comcast Cares Day, an initiative in its 16th year, promoted by the media giant that gives back to local communities where their employees live and work. Employees spent the morning and afternoon gardening and cleaning up the garden beds at each of the homes. “We are grateful for Comcast NBCUniversal’s enthusiastic volunteers who donated their time to make the homes of the people we support an even more beautiful

David Fryling, director of choral activities for Hofstra University, where he also teaches choral conducting and choral literature, held a master class for music students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. The master class program is part of the school’s ongoing mission to provide its students with inside looks at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen field. Fryling worked with a small, focused group of singing students. He talked
about the importance of telling the story of the text through the use of the singing voice, as well as through the interplay between the different sections’ lines. The class focused on breathing together, and they tried different ways of shaping the text as they sang it. “It was a wonderful morning of music-making with a talented and passionate group of young musicians,” Fryling said. “They were each very brave musicians with a natural and intrinsic drive to do their best. I was lucky to have been able to be there to listen, learn from, and
teach them, and I hope we get to do it again soon!” Fryling serves as an adjunct professor for the Hofstra School of Education, where he supervises choral music education student teachers during their field placements. In 2014, he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame as the “Educator of Note” in recognition of his years of leadership in the Long Island music education community. This year, he was named the winner of The American Prize in Conducting, Community Chorus Division.
