Shore Road School student-musicians in the Bellmore School District displayed their musical talents and skills during the school’s annual spring concert on May 23. For all of the students, the concert was an opportunity to show how they have improved during the school year, while sixth graders took the stage for the last time during their elementary careers. The concert featured the orchestra, chamber orchestra, symphonic orchestra, fifthand sixth-grade choruses and band. Under the batons of orchestra director Kelly Brandstadter, choral director Laura Itskovitz and band director Jennifer MacVicar, the student-musicians performed a variety of classical and popular tunes to the delight of family and peers.

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community. One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. Athletic Accolades Across East Meadow Spring athletic teams at East Meadow High School and W.T. Clarke High School capped off a rewarding school year for the East Meadow School District’s athletic department with various team and individual honors. The boys track and field team at East Meadow High School matched a sixth straight Conference 2 Championship title during the winter season with the same feat achieved in the spring season. Brandon Love earned All-State honors in the pole vault while Paul Choi, John Meah, Matt Owens, Nabeel Sheikh, Zach Van Houten and Bryan Villafuerta were All-County athletes throughout different events. The girls spring track team finished second at the conference meet with the 4x800 meter relay team qualifying for the state championship.

Jake Rosenthal led the W.T. Clarke High School boys spring track and field team by racing to the individual Nassau County Championship in the 200 meter dash and becoming a state qualifier. He also joined David Stewart, Sobin Ouseph and Alex Pereira on the 4x100 meter relay team that ran to a secondplace finish at the county championships. The W.T. Clarke girls spring track and field team also enjoyed a successful season that included the 4x400 meter relay team of Juliana Vanegas, Karina Romero, Marisa Simone and Isabella Deleon qualifying for the county championship and state qualifier. The East Meadow High School softball team captured its third straight Nassau County and Long Island Championship and went on to compete in the New York State

Championship in Glen Falls. Jenna Laird, Julianna Sanzone, Amy Mallah and Amanda Thompson all earned All-County recognitions. The W.T. Clarke High School baseball team finished the season with 24 wins including the conference and county championships. During the season, the Rams held the top ranking in the county and Long Island in addition to the third spot in the state. Chris Giardino, the Conference 2 MVP, and Brendan Turton were each named All-State selections and head coach Tom Abruscato was named the Conference 2 Coach of the Year. The two schools combined for 32 AllCounty awards and 49 All-Conference selections throughout the entire season.

15th Annual Concert & Food Drive Paying Tribute to Harry Chapin For the 15th straight year, more than two dozen of Long Island’s top folk and rock musicians will take to the stage in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow to perform the music of Harry Chapin, the late singer, Grammy Award-winning songwriter and social activist. The “Just Wild About Harry” tribute concert on Monday night, July 15, will feature 17 acts. The concert, set for 7:15 p.m., is free, but concertgoers are asked to bring donations of nonperishable food to support Long Island Cares, Inc., the regional food bank founded by Chapin in 1980. “The annual Harry Chapin Tribute Concert in Eisenhower Park is always a very special event for all of us at Long Island Cares because so many of Harry’s fans attend and are extremely supportive of Long Island Cares and the work we do to assist the more than 316,000 Long Islanders struggling

with domestic hunger and high food insecurity,” said Paule Pachter, the nonprofit organization’s chief executive officer. Markus added, “This year marks the 38th anniversary of Chapin’s death on the LIE at the age of 38, while en route to perform on the Eisenhower Park stage that now bears his name, so we’re doing something special: “Cat’s in the Cradle” will be done as a sing-along to a recording of Harry playing it solo-acoustic, where he laid out on the choruses for the audience to take part.” Besides Markus and Gathering Time, this year’s artist roster includes newcomers Travis McKeveny and Pete Mancini, and returning performers Patricia Shih, Lisa Itts, Robin Eve & Frank Walker, Robinson Treacher, Debra Lynne, Media Crime, Karen Bella & Mara Levine, Jerry DeMeo, Sid Cherry & Helen

Engineering Knowledge Rains Down The Amazon rainforest came alive in third grade classrooms at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District as a culminating project for their study of Brazil. Students worked in teams and were tasked with building models of rainforest huts. Supplies

they used included Popsicle sticks, cloth, clothespins and felt, along with natural materials such as grass, leaves and twigs. Before building, each team had to share ideas and discuss the pros and cons of different designs, in addition to deciding which materials would work best. Students

learned through trial and error, as many groups had to adjust their plans during the building process. Teachers Jennifer Howe and Susan Meskill said they were very impressed with the creativity students displayed in their designs and use of materials.

SCOUT TO RENEW PARK AVENUE 9/11 MEMORIAL - Boy Scout Nicholas Carrano, a 2016 graduate of Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, will complete his Eagle Scout community service project at the school. He will refurbish Park Avenue’s Sept. 11 memorial by removing a wooden box and replacing it with a stone ring that is 10 feet in diameter and two feet high. Additionally, he will provide an irrigation system for the plants inside and add a peace pole. Nicholas, who is entering his sophomore year at Mepham High School and is a member of Boy Scout Troop 123, was joined by Principal Eileen Speidel at the July 1 board of education meeting where he received approval for his project.
