Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club, located at 483 West Main Street in Huntington. Don’t Forget the Flats By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as it’s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I – both former dancers – decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably
warm for late September (like, approaching 90º warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, that’s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Let’s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.
Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell flip-flops, don’t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they won’t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose – which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were – a pair of size 9 (I’m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Plans were mapped out accordingly, including a detour into Central Park. To be continued…

Northside and Summit Lane elementary schools recognized the students with awards and celebratory speeches during their respective ceremonies. Each of the principals and honored guests dispensed words of wisdom. At Gardiners Avenue, Principal Susan Hendler touted the students’ altruistic accomplishments, which she said, defines them as a special class. “They are learning values and beliefs, along with educational structure, that will help them soar,” Hendler said. Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes encouraged the students to become involved in sixth grade, while Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald allayed the students’ anxiety about entering middle school and encouraged them to do their best and to be a good sport. After the ceremonial speeches, choral selections, recognitions and special readings, the students were presented one-by-one with their certificates of completion to the applause of parents and family. They then joined their families for refreshments and said goodbye to classmates for the summer recess.

It was a day of celebration for Wantagh elementary school students from Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh elementary schools who commemorated the culmination of their primary education during individual moving up ceremonies. Each of the honored guests offered words of
advise on excelling in middle school and in life. Forest Lake elementary School Principal Anthony Ciuffo encouraged the students to be the best person they can be and to serve others. “Go make a difference in someone else’s life and you’ll be surprised at the difference it makes in yours,” he said. There were musical
interludes and recognitions at each of the ceremonies prior to the students being called one by one to receive their moving up certificates. After the ceremonies, the graduates joined family and friends for refreshments where they thanked their teachers and said goodbye to classmates for the summer.

Gifts for Children When Kyle and Samantha’s mom saw the delivery from Friends of Karen, she was elated. Inside were the much needed supplies for her children to begin a successful school year. It was a relief for the family of five, whose other sibling, Erin, was diagnosed with Leukemia at age seven. “The last thing on my priority list, unfortunately, was getting the kids off to school with their necessary

What a relief when Friends of Karen stepped in with this beautiful gesture,” she said. “Not just for Erin, but my other children as well.” Friends of Karen, which provides vital, practical and comprehensive support – at no cost – to families caring for a child with cancer or another life-threatening illness, has a Gifts For Children program that includes back-to-school

Over the summer, Friends of Karen collects donations of school supplies, backpacks and gift cards to make sure their families are able to get their children back to school in September with the right supplies. “Many of the families we help are trying to balance paying for their child’s medical bills, keeping up with regular household expenses and putting food on the

Favorable Rating The Wantagh School District has received notice from Moody’s Investors Service that it has been assigned a rating of Aa2. The rating has been assigned to the district’s $6.9 million in School District Serial Bonds for 2015, as well as affirms the Aa2 rating on $18.7 million in outstanding general obligation debt.
According to Moody’s, the Aa2 rating “reflects the district’s strong financial position evidenced by six consecutive operating surpluses and growing reserve levels; a manageable debt burden rapid principal repayment and above average pension liabilities. The Aa2 also reflects the district’s large tax base with well above-
average wealth levels.” “This rating was achieved through careful financial planning and conservative budgeting practices,” said Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg. “All of us in the district take great pride in this achievement and will continue to work toward the maintenance of a fiscally sound district.”

Celebrating New Beginnings Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex was a sea of blue caps and gowns as 337 MacArthur High School graduating seniors from the Class of 2015 celebrated a longawaited milestone during the school’s 54th annual commencement ceremony. Led by high school principal Kathleen Valentino, members of the administration and staff and Board of Education trustees, the graduates proceeded to their seats to the symphonic band’s playing of Pomp and Circumstance, performed under the direction of Joseph Romano. Class of 2015 President Audra Gale led the graduates and audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which the senior choir sang the national anthem. In her address to
the graduates, Valentino then dispensed valuable advice she collected from teachers on how to live a fulfilling life, including not taking yourself too seriously and taking on jobs that don’t feel like work. “You have only one chance with your future,” she said. In addition, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald reminded the graduates, “today marks the day that your parents will see you as an adult negotiating your own terms.” She also encouraged the graduates to have confidence in the path they take. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Gary Hudes urged the students to continue helping others and to step up to the plate in order to be “somebody,” while the Honorable U.S. Senator
Charles E. Schumer encouraged the graduates to pursue their dreams. Salutatorian Christopher Simonetti encouraged his peers to find a special talent and focus on it, while Valedictorian Brianna Abatelli urged fellow classmates to take the road less travelled and to follow their passions. “Don’t let anyone tell you what to do,” she stated. “Now you have the chance to start over.” After the students and audience watched a commemorative video presentation, Board President Peggy Marenghi certified that the seniors had met the requirements for graduation. Each student then walked across the stage to receive his or her diploma to become an alumnus of the Levittown School District.

Grand Accomplishment The Class of 2015 took their final steps onto the fields at East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools on Sunday, June 28th at the schools’ annual commencement ceremonies. Superintendent of Schools Louis DeAngelo addressed the students at each ceremony, imparting a sentiment to the Class of 2015. “If there could be only one thing in this life for me to teach you, I would teach you to love; to respect others, so that you may find respect in yourself; to learn the value of giving so that if there’s ever a time in your life that ever someone really needs you, you will give.” The valedictorians and salutatorians of each class addressed their peers, sharing memories of their time in school and their best wishes
for a bright and prosperous future. At East Meadow High School, valedictorian Nicole Newberger posed the question of “What did high school mean to me” to several of her classmates. Forming lifelong friendships, exploring a multitude of opportunities and learning new skills were some of the memories shared. “The true importance of high school,” Nicole said, “wasn’t just the academic knowledge it provided…I’ll remember all the amazing people I’ve met along the way.” East Meadow Salutatorian Allyson Clark touted the accomplishments of her class in her address, from the marching band and wrestling team to the countless hours of community service the class performed. “Being a student at East Meadow has taught me to never give up, even when defeat seems inevitable,” she said. In his speech, W.T. Clarke High School Valedictorian Pavithran Ravindran compared the high school journey to a metaphorical
train ride. Looking to the future, Pavithran said, “You have no idea where this train is going. The unknown may seem scary and although we are all taking different journeys, Clarke has trained us to be leaders by giving us the opportunity to be members of clubs, athletic teams and so much more.” Salutatorian Rohit Bachani said, “Class of 2015, I glance at you and I see a troupe of dreamers, a group with the zeal to make all of their dreams come true…hold on to your sense of courage and willpower.” Following the speeches, the members of each graduating class received their diplomas to the cheers of family and friends in attendance. Once officially announced as graduates, the Class of 2015 celebrated by tossing their caps into the air. Following the recessional march, graduates reunited with their loved ones as official alumni of the East Meadow School District.

A juried art show in Port Jefferson this summer that will benefit the Fortunato Breast Health Center will feature works inspired by the personal transformation, hope, love, fear, loss and victory associated with breast cancer. John T. Mather Memorial Hospital is teaming up with the North Shore Art Guild, the Village of Port Jefferson and the Port Jefferson Conservancy to present “Artists United Against Breast Cancer”, a juried art show at the Port Jefferson Village Center from August 30th, 2015 to Saturday, October 31st. The show will have as its theme “Victors of Survival, A Celebration of the Warrior Within Each of Us.” “Victors of Survival is not just about breast cancer. It’s about personal transformation, the person you become having faced the experience,” said Mac Titmus, Vice President of the Art Guild and coordinator of the show. “It’s about the emergence of the warrior within you, and the struggle that brings it forth. It’s about you, the artist, and how you choose to transform that passion into expression.” Artists do not need to be a cancer survivor or family member of a survivor to participate. Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex was filled with an atmosphere of pride and excitement as 257 graduates from Division Avenue High School in Levittown took a step towards a new life beginning during the 56th commencement exercises. Under the direction of Mark Martufi, the high school orchestra played Pomp and Circumstance as the graduates filed onto the floor with Board of Education trustees, administrators and faculty. Student Council President Christina Reilly led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the concert choir’s singing of the national anthem under the direction of Paige Hardison. In her opening remarks, Principal Joan Lorelli touted the graduates’
accomplishments and encouraged them to be brave, take risks and to discover their identities. “Have the courage to discover your identity and embrace it,” Lorelli said. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald also urged the students to make a positive mark on the world. Guest and Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray told the students that connecting with others will assist them in growing as human beings, while Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes explained that “stepping up” is the beginning of becoming “somebody.” The Honorable U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer also told the graduates now is the time to figure out their dreams. As part of the Levittown tradition, salutatorian
Christopher Thompson addressed his peers by pointing out that everyone will have the opportunity to make it to many of the world’s “mountaintops.” Valedictorian Krysten Garcia then gave advice not to take shortcuts and to work past failures. “Remember that no one path is the right path,” she stated. After Board President Peggy Marenghi certified that the seniors had met the requirements for graduation, the students approached the stage to receive his or her diploma and to become alumnus of the Levittown School District. Prior to joining their families, the Class of 2015 then watched a commemorative video presentation that featured short video clips and featured photographs of their year together.
Starting a New Chapter It was a morning of excitement and celebration as Wisdom Lane Middle School students, dressed in ceremonial robes, paraded down the auditorium aisles during the school’s annual moving up ceremony. Under the direction of Lori Katcher, the sixthand seventh-grade band played the celebratory Pomp and Circumstance to accompany the graduates’ procession to their seats and to mark the commencement of the school’s beloved tradition of honoring the students for three years of hard work. Eighth-grade class representative Valeria Mosquera led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, and the “Star-Spangled
Banner was sung by Nicole Leshinsky, Jeffery Luong and Valerie Mosquera. Principal John Avena reflected on the school’s three-years of changes and the students’ resilience due to schedule changes during Superstorm Sandy, the addition of a school day period, the changes of the school colors to red and royal blue and the addition of the Challenger teams. “You are respectful, responsible and hardworking individuals,” he stated. Division Avenue High School student council president Christina Reilly and president-elect Steven Reilly welcomed the students to the high school and explained that the next four years will be one of
opportunity. Then Class representatives Natalie Baquet and Brandon Smith reflected on memories formed at Wisdom Lane. Brandon added, “It is time to throw away your store bought map and draw your own.” Prior to the eighth-grade performance of Rhythm of Life, under the direction of Carol Spainer, class representatives Haley Giles and Valerie Mosquera also presented the school with a monetary class gift for the Wisdom Lane Food Pantry. The new high school students then proceeded across the stage to receive their Division Avenue High School lanyards and to be congratulated by the district administration and staff.

Pride and excitement wafted over Wantagh High School’s Lawrence Field as 278 seniors celebrated a long-awaited milestone during the district’s 60th annual commencement exercises on June 25th. The Board of Education, administration and faculty led the black and gold clad seniors down the track and to their seats as the high school band played Pomp and Circumstance, under the direction of Mindy Dragovich. After a salute to the flag led by General Organization Co-presidents Meghan Daly and Kaitlyn von Runnen, drum major Mark Sales was invited to conduct the high school band for the last time during the playing of the national anthem. High School Principal Carolyn Breivogel extended a warm welcome to the Class of 2015 and their guests, remarking to the graduates that they have all left their mark on Wantagh. “Work hard, be kind and amazing things will happen,” she said.
Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg, using the metaphor of a ball of yarn, explained that there will be many milestones and twists. “The greatest twist is the unraveling of the line into the real world,” she said. Board of Education President Tony Greco encouraged the students to always be prepared, believe in yourself, be a lifetime learner, give of yourself, and live a balanced life. “We will always be here to celebrate your success,” Greco stated. The Honorable U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer also made an appearance, encouraging the students to reach for their dreams. His piece of advice for the graduates was, “Go for it.” The ceremony was punctuated with a comedic and proverbial trip down memory lane by senior class co-presidents John Casella and Zachary Diaks. Ralph Spagnolo, president of the Wantagh Foundation for Educational Excellence, and Gerald McCrink, president of Wantagh
Dollars for Scholars then presented select seniors with scholarships, thus continuing the tradition of honoring educational achievement. Salutatorian Julia Lantier then took the podium and posed the question about how education has best served her. “Education symbolizes the invaluable lessons and experiences that have shaped the people we are,” Lantier stated. Valedictorian Julia Laibach, using a metaphor of an ocean tide, encouraged her classmates to “paddle out toward the horizon and the unknown.” After Mr. Goldberg and Mr. Greco certified that the seniors had met the standards for graduation, the graduates were then called one by one to receive their diplomas and become the district’s newest alumni. The Board of Education and administration extend best wishes of happiness and success to the Class of 2015.
All-National Selection Division Avenue High School student-musician John Genzale has been selected to perform in the 2015 All-National Honor Ensembles for Mixed Choir for Bass 1. Sponsored by the National Association for Music Education, John is one of 68 students from
New York State and one of 22 students from Nassau County to be selected to perform with the top high school musicians in the U.S. at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn. on October 28th. Performance ensembles include concert band, mixed choir, symphony
orchestra and jazz. During the program, the studentmusicians will have the opportunity to perform under the baton of the nation’s leaders in music education. The Levittown School District congratulates John on this outstanding accomplishment.

Shore Road School’s sixth-grade class celebrated years of hard work during graduation on June 22nd and took a step toward their futures as they prepared to enter Grand Avenue Middle School this fall. The ceremony, held in John F. Kennedy High School’s auditorium, began with remarks from Shore Road Principal Patrice Matthews, who said both the Bellmore School District students and family members should be proud of their hard work and dedication. Musical groups showcased their talents, with the sixth-grade band performing “Imagine” and the sixth-grade orchestra presenting “Don’t Stop Believin’.” As a lasting memory of their time spent at Shore Road, the class collectively presented their soon-to-be alma mater with a colorful piece of artwork. The “Smiles Are Free” poster board, complete with the handprints of each student, will be displayed at the school this fall. It was dedicated in memory of former classmate Korri Haimson During the ceremony, several honored guests
addressed the students and attendees to share congratulations and words of wisdom. Board of Education President Janet Goller spoke to both students and parents about the importance of working together, even beyond the elementary level. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph S. Famularo impressed upon the Shining Stars to take the core values learned in the district and hold them close as they move on to middle school. “Class of 2015, the conclusion of one chapter signifies the beginning of a new one,” Dr. Famularo said. “You are stars, and we are truly proud of you.”

Eighth-graders at Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools in the East Meadow School District culminated their time in middle school with special moving up ceremonies, held at each school on June 24th. The ceremonies were laced with performances by school musical groups and poignant speeches by administrators. They also touted the many accomplishments of the eighth-grade graduating classes.
A highlight of each ceremony was the presentation of the Superintendent’s Award, given to a student at each middle school for his/her overall academic excellence. At Woodland, student Senya Huda was honored with the award, while at W.T. Clarke Middle School, the award was presented to both Joel Mathew and Elaine Xiao. The district congratulates all eighthgrade graduates on this important milestone and wishes them much success at the high school level.
Shore Road Shines Earlier this month, members of the Shore Road School band, orchestra and chorus were rewarded for their musical talents during a performance competition at the Monroe Township School District in New Jersey. Students took part in
a competition amongst many other schools where they performed several songs, including Shadows Unleashed by the band, Conviction by the orchestra and Heart and Soul by the chorus. During the competition, the chorus and band both

Academic Awards Members of the W.T. Clarke High School Class of 2015 were honored with academic, special and scholarship awards at the school’s senior academic awards ceremony on June 22nd.
The event was attended by parents, teachers, school administrators, community leaders and scholarship sponsors. Students were acknowledged for their accomplishments and
academic achievements over the past four years. The district and W. T. Clarke High School administration congratulates these honorees on their years of academic excellence.

When asked by the foundation to honor a teacher that made an impact on his life, Zubair chose English Chairperson Dr. Franklin Cacciutto. “The best advice you ever gave me was to ‘be myself,’” Zubair said, after reciting a poem he wrote about his respected educator.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Hall of Fame Scholars The Long Island Music Hall of Fame has announced the awarding of four student scholarships to graduating Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens high school students who will be pursuing college music studies in the 20152016 academic year. “Long Island Music Hall of Fame is honored to have the opportunity to assist in the education of high school seniors who are pursuing a future in music,” said LIMHof Education Chairman, Tom Needham. The awardees are: Ethan Fields – 2015 graduate of Islip High School – French horn and voice. He has participated in NYSSMA all state groups, including the vocal jazz ensemble in 2013, symphonic band in 2014 and the All Eastern symphonic band in 2015. He’s also been a member of Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and participated in all schoolbased music groups as well. Ethan will be attending SUNY Fredonia College in the fall for Music Composition and Sound. He says of himself, “Overall, my career goal is to become both a composer and a sound technician. I would love to write music for performance and media. This would allow me to be surrounded by music and musicians constantly and be up to date on everything that happens in the music world.” Crystal Kim – 2015 graduate of Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School – cello. She was the principal cello chair of the NAfME All-National Honors Orchestra in Nashville, the second chair of All-Eastern Music Conference in Providence and was a member of the New York All-State Symphony Orchestra. She was named one of 20 Newsday Scholar –Artists.
She said, “People always ask me why I want to do music rather than pursue an academic career in science or math. Music seems to be just about the most difficult of fields out there because there is never a right answer. There are so many interpretations of the same pieces so they can be right or wrong depending on what each performer thinks. It is up to them to decide which one is the correct answer. For me, this is a thrilling challenge. Although it is not easy to put myself under
the spotlight and wait to be criticized, but I just can’t wait for the moment when I am on stage and I can play effortlessly and still let out a rich and full sound from my instrument….I plan to become a cellist in a major orchestra upon graduation….” Sarah Miller – 2015 graduate of Locust Valley High School– cello and piano. She was an alternate in the 2013 All-State Orchestra and is a 2014-15 LI Arts Alliance Scholar Artist Award of Merit winner. She attends the
Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division and serves as principal cellist with the Manhattan Youth Orchestra. She has performed at Lincoln Center in the 31st Annual Young Musicians Concert where she presented Handel-Halvorsen’s Passacaglia from memory. Her student statement reads, “Next year I will be attending the Cleveland Institute of Music in order to pursue my dreams of becoming a professional cellist. Seeking a BA in Cello Music performance…aiming to attend a top school to earn a Master’s degree as well. My main goal is to become a performer who makes an impression on audiences that changes their outlook on music.” Patrick Wilhelm – 2015 graduate of Locust valley High School – vocalist. He studied at the Julliard Pre-College Division during the 2014-15 academic year. He has received a grant from the George London Foundation and was accepted as one of 14 new freshmen to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he’ll receive a full academic scholarship. He’ll study this Summer with Dalton Baldwin in southern France. He says, “I have been passionate about opera singing for several years and have come to the conclusion that I want to achieve two key goals from a career in professional singing. At a more macro level, these goals include a revitalization and re-installation of “antique” music into regular repertoire. Then on a more personal level, I would like to live a life where I am able to financially support myself doing what I love and share my passion with others. (I) perform baroque music (and am) seeking a career in music performance.”
