The Charity of the Month for July is
Blue Umbrella Experience www.abcommunityclasses.org
Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience definitely understands that! The classes that this nonprofit offer either take place at their new location, which is 150 Motor Parkway, Suite 11, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or online! Some classes they offer are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Acting and Improv, Music Appreciation, Art, Digital Design and Technology, World Cultures, History of Walt Disney, Languages and Humanities, Personal Development, Finances and Math for everyday use, Communications, Animals & Nature and Cooking for all abilities and all levels. “We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonprofit Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive
Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.” Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning. To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other. Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. Also, if you would like to volunteer your time to help fulfill their mission, you can! Lastly, donations are always appreciated. If you would like to get involved with Blue Umbrella Experience in any way, please contact Christine Hawkins at chawkins@buexperience.org. Looking to learn more? Please visit www. abcommunityclasses.org, visit them on Facebook or watch for upcoming articles this month featuring this great nonprofit. In the meantime, BUE urges you to “Take a Class and Join a Community”!

Pollution is a serious problem, and this is a good way to make the public see it for themselves while doing something about it.” Lindsey Reisz, Education Coordinator for AMSEAS, said, “Cleaning up our marine environment is at the core of our organization’s mission to promote marine conservation through action. The 2018 ReviewTrackers Online Reviews Stats report found that star ratings affect consumer behavior, as 80 percent of consumers say they trust 4-, 4.5- and 5-star ratings
the most. The good news for consumers is that product reviews need not be long to be effective. ReviewTrackers notes that the average review is now roughly the size of a tweet and has gotten 65 percent shorter since 2010. That means it’s simple, quick and effective to support local businesses via online reviews of their products.

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check
your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make
sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks:
Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check— name, signature, address— can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs,
shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online
criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.

Protect Your Parks: 4 Ways To Keep Facilities Clean Parks have long been popular places to congregate. Facilities vary, but many parks offer various amenities — from walking or biking trails to dog runs to fitness areas. And while thousands of individuals and families visit parks each
year, when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, parks provided an escape for those who were unable to gather at indoor recreational facilities. Even though parks offered safe places to have fun outdoors when other options were limited, the pandemic affected the way the parks were managed due to budget cuts and reduced staff. This, coupled with a surge in visitors that continues today, only underscores the importance of all outdoor enthusiasts doing what they can to keep parks clean. The following are four effective strategies for individuals to keep parks clean. 1. Leave no trace According to National Geographic, Leave No Trace is a set of environmental ethics for interacting with the great outdoors. It follows guidelines for using parks in thoughtful, sustainable ways. In addition to carry in/carry out
policies for belongings and trash, Leave No Trace components involve making an effort not to disturb and plants and animals, hiking in appropriate areas, and using care when camping. More information about the Leave No Trace movement is available at https://lnt.org. 2. Manage pet waste The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in the United States, pet dogs produce more than eight billion pounds of feces each year, which equates to three-quarters of a pound per dog every day. Dog waste can contain bacteria and even cryptosporidium, a parasite that infects humans. Even though animal waste is organic, leaving it alone instead of picking it up can lead to environmental issues, including negative effects on local water supplies. It also smells bad and attracts flies and vermin. It’s important
for park visitors to pick up after their companion animals. 3. Reduce waste It can take roughly 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade. Even if they finally break down, bottles made from polyethylene terephalate (PET) can leave toxins in the soil and threaten fresh water. Use a reusable bottle instead of a single-use alternative when visiting the park. If plastic bottles must be used, be sure to place them in recycling containers around the park. 4. Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Increased usage of parks means the potential for more trash and damage. Everyone can do his or her part to keep parks clean and enjoyable.

Hempstead Town to Host Youth Summer Field Hockey Camp Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and the Town Board recently announced that the Town of Hempstead would be hosting a Summer Youth Field Hockey Camp for township residents ages 8 to 14. The camp will be held at Oceanside Park, located at 3800 Mahlon Brower Drive in Oceanside, and will run from July 19 through July 22. Clavin made the announcement along with Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., Councilman Tom Muscarella, Councilman Chris Carini, Town Clerk Kate Murray and Receiver
of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll. The Youth Field Hockey Camp is open to players of all skill levels, and will provide an opportunity for participants to build and enhance their fundamental field hockey skills. Campers will receive training on both the basics of the sport and beyond in a fun, collaborative, and smallgroup environment with hands-on training from experienced field hockey coaches. All youth athlete participants will also be given complimentary camp t-shirt as part of the program. Camp activities will be led by Courtney O’Brien, Head Coach of the renowned Sacred Heart High School Field Hockey team.
“Staying active is an important part of staying healthy, and I am excited the Town of Hempstead will be holding this great Youth Summer Field Hockey Camp for our community’s younger athletes,” said Clavin. “I invite eligible residents to come on down and participate in this excellent opportunity to enhance their field hockey skills.” The Youth Field Hockey Camp’s registration fee is $40 per child, with a sibling rate of $35 for any additional youth camp registrants from the same family. Camp participants must bring their own equipment to the sessions, including a field hockey stick, shin guards, goggles and a protective
Autism And Children According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of
mouth piece. Residents interested in registering their children for the camp may do so through the Town of Hempstead Park’s Department signup portal available at the following link: https:// hempsteadtownparks. com/. The deadline for registration is July 18th or when the camp reaches capacity. “I am proud that America’s largest township is able to provide this service to residents at an affordable cost in-house at our beautiful Oceanside Park,” said Clavin. “These training sessions will help promote this exciting sport to the next generation of Long Island athletes.
12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

2021 A Horse of a Different Color Returns Home Nassau County A major Public Art Exhibit piece has been restored & spruced up after a decade and a half as a tourist attraction on Freeport’s Nautical MiIe on Long Island. Weathering seventeen
years on Woodcleft Canal and surviving Super Storm Sandy in 2012, “Sport of Kings” is back and better than ever. Freeport resident James Caracciolo owns the life sized sculpture of a Quarter
Horse who was among the twenty or so artworks by several artists participating in the Fundraising Auction sponsored by Nassau County and the Sport Entertainment and Tourism Commission
at Belmont Racetrack in 2003. The years and hurricanes took their toll on the artwork and James felt he might be able to convince the original artist to consider doing the restoration herself. When asked if she was up to the task in 2020 , Debra Ann
Kasimakis, Long Island’s own celebrity artist said, “I’d be honored” and after her stroke of 2019, felt it would be a great way to keep in the loop during the year of the Pandemic. There is talk on the Grapevine of a coming out party for the horse and this
Summer is the perfect time to make the unveiling a step in a positive direction for Long Island tourism. “Sport of Kings” is back and so is Long Island’s Summer Season. Hope to see you soon.
