Young Investors A team of sixth-graders from the North Bellmore School District recently won third place in the Long Island Stock Market Game competition. The winners included Charles Decker and Richard Wang from John Dineklmeyer Elementary School and Wynter Dodson and Kieran Roth from the Saw Mill Road Elementary School. They took part in the competition through the district’s ALPHA enrichment program with

teacher Gayle Angert. In the online Stock Market Game, sponsored by the SIFMA Foundation, teams were given $100,000 of virtual money to invest in stocks, bonds and mutual funds. The simulation required students to research the companies they selected as investment choices and monitor their finances, deciding to sell or buy particular stocks as they tracked trends. The team competed in the middle school division.

The students finished the competition with $125,552 and were honored at a ceremony at Adelphi University. A team of fifth-graders from Newbridge Road and Park Avenue elementary schools finished eighth in the elementary division. Moving Forward The Experience of a Lunchtime Zen with Clark Lambert

tranquility to your mind and body. There is no one way to approach this scene, nor to obtain the many benefits available to you. After doing a lot of thinking about the best way to accomplish this, I decided to explain how I would go about it - step by step. What you are about to read is the result of my own many years of study and experience in the art of Zen. As such, one should not expect the same results by merely trying the same method. However, it will at least give you the basics of how this method can achieve success. A while ago, my wife and I decided to take a weekend in Key West, just as a change of pace and to relax. At that time, I was working in Miami, so it meant only a relaxing drive from that city due south down toward the Keys. Since it was approaching late afternoon, once at the hotel, we were anxious to take the short walk to the pier, buy a drink and take in a view of the setting sun. If you have never been to the Keys, you are probably unaware that, as the sun sets (a bright golden-red), it appears to cover the entire horizon in a blaze of color! As I knew that this was to become a Zen experience, I prepared myself for it.

As the sun began to set, I took several deep breaths and did a brief meditation. I then opened my eyes and found myself completely immersed in the moment. Having my wife with me and feeling a great peace within myself only added to the joy of the moment as the sun sank lower on the horizon. It was an amazing sight - most people sat in awe, and a few even clapped! To complete the moment and finish the experience, we found a small café on the water where one could have dinner and watch the fishing boats return to the harbor. This experience was heightened by taking in the sights and sounds of the harbor itself – the slight breeze coming off the water, the occasional sounds of the ships unloading their catch of the day and the screeching of seagulls who follow the ships in every night to pick up the fish scraps and enjoy their impromptu dinner. To help you further understand the Zen process, here are some broad guidelines to follow. • As the fishing boats follow the lighthouse markers that guide them to the harbor, so does a short meditation prior to Zen. • Always keep in mind that the art of

Zen takes many months (even years) to master. Do not be discouraged or impatient as you learn. You will find that completion of even the smallest of steps will give you pleasure. • It may be beneficial for you to partner up with a close friend who can mutually experience the value as you follow the real world of Zen. Success and failure are usually minimized when you have someone to share them with. KEY POINT Here is a true Zen story which will further illustrate a key point of discovery at the heart of Zen. I was travelling throughout the deep south on a business trip. At mid-morning, I stopped at a small donut shop for a quick break. When I walked in, I was struck by their wall display. It was a very large donut hung on the wall, but what quickly caught my eye were the words underneath. It said: As you go through life brother, whatever your goal, keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole. It took only a few moments to realize that those words represented a true Zen philosophy! Peace

One of the many solid principles of Zen is that, when you read or see several pages of text, you then contemplate the highlights in your mind before going on to the next section. We will do this now, shifting the scene a bit from the written word to a visual experience. Here we go... There is a local radio station that, when approaching the lunchtime hour (around 12 noon) will describe a picture of a tranquil scene - usually a fountain, a view of the park with people enjoying themselves, and so on. They will tell us that we are experiencing a “lunchtime Zen.” Now, I have never see any type of poll where the average person knows exactly what a “lunchtime Zen” really is. I guess the station feels that, if it makes people feel happy, that’s enough - and probably so. However, moving forward, let’s unravel this puzzle together. To clarify, the mere sight of a beautiful scene does not automatically trigger a Zen response. This is when your body, mind and the environment blend together in unison. Over time, and with repeated practice, one finds a deeper sense of fulfillment, coupled with a greater sense of yourself - bringing deeper peace and

Art League Residency Six Long Island artists were selected to become the first ever Resident Artist Members of the Art League of Long Island’s new Resident Artist Membership Program (RAMP) aimed at supporting artists by offering opportunities to more fully develop their skills, learn to teach their craft, and become leaders in the creative community.

The exuberant and lively group of artists gathered together for orientation in late May, brimming with ideas and creative energy to bring to the inaugural group of Resident Artist Members. The six selected artists are Beth Atkinson, Adrienne Lauren Catanese, Simon Fenster, Diane Ferraro, E. Craig Marcin, and Angeli Zankel. The program, conceived

by Art Education Program Coordinator Andrea Manning, offers Resident Artist Members access to the Art League’s state of the art studios through open studio time and 50 free hours of class time each semester. In addition to strengthening their skills with studio and class time, they will experience what it is like to assist behind the scenes

The Heart of the Matter “I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world.” ~ Henry Luce As I sit here at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon composing my thoughts for this column, one can’t help but reflect upon the latest in a long line of tragic shootings to touch the nation, this time at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette, an Annapolis newspaper founded in 1727. Among the five fatalities were veteran editors, writers and reporters, as well as a sales assistant to the staff. To think that a random act of violence on an otherwise average day could at once shatter so many lives is quite jarring. Of course, we as a society have become all too accustomed to dealing with tragedies of this sort; places that were once deemed to be “safe” can no longer be guaranteed so. Schools, churches, movie theaters . . . the list goes on and on. Year after year, these senseless acts have invaded our

societal comfort zone, making it increasingly difficult to look the other way. There is simply no rhyme or reason to the madness and where it may strike next. Of course, being of the journalism profession and working in an office much like the one brought to its knees last Thursday, this particular incident resonates on a slightly deeper level. The sentiment expressed by one Gazette reporter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, “I can tell you this: we are putting out a damned newspaper tomorrow,” is one that rings true for nearly every publication through history that has been faced with a measure of adversity. From storms and natural disasters to power outages, union strikes and the like, journalism is one of the few industries that seldom “stops the presses” for any reason. Just a few years ago, many local community newspapers were faced with the prospect of not publishing in the

wake of Hurricane Sandy, as the majority of Long Island remained without power in the days and weeks following. But ultimately, the need to forge ahead, to provide readers with a lifeline to their surroundings, prevailed. As promised, the Capital Gazette came out with its Friday edition, the headline “5 Shot Dead at the Capital” splashed across the front cover. Simple. And yet so far from simple. Within the paper were written articles covering the attack and photos of the victims. But perhaps most poignant was the page normally reserved for opinions and editorials, which was left blank. In the white space were the words: Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank to commemorate the victims of Thursday’s shooting at our ofﬁce. What followed were the names of the five employees who were killed, one to a line. At the end of the day, there is really not much more to say.

The Levittown Public Schools Board of Education honored 50 faculty members from across the district who will be retiring at the end of the school year, during the district’s board of education meeting on June 13th. Retirees received a plaque for their years of dedicated service to the district, which combined totaled 1,190 years. Assistant Superintendent for Business William

Pastore will be retiring after five years of service to the district and Jonas E. Salk Middle School Assistant Principal Patrick Mulligan will be retiring after 32 years. In addition, four teachers from the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center will be retiring as well. Retirees include construction management instructor Brian Lilly, 11 years; police science instructor Robert MacKay, 15 years; culinary

Seniors Shine As morning clouds cleared way for sunny skies, graduates at East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools gathered on their respective football fields to accept their diplomas on June 24th. Both ceremonies included musical numbers from the senior chorus, in addition to speeches from administrators, district officials and the first commencement speech delivered by Dr. Kenneth A. Card, Jr. as superintendent of schools. “I ask you to remember that a high school diploma is a significant accomplishment and a beginning to finding your place in this world,” Dr. Card told the graduates. “Instead of the world changing you, you can change the world.” The class president, salutatorian and valedictorian from each

class addressed their peers one final time by reflecting, encouraging and looking ahead to the future. “We need to realize that we are the future and our voices matter tremendously,” said East Meadow High School Class President Daniel Miranda. “If we want change in matters that affect us, we need to speak up.” “As we forge ahead with our plans next year,” said W.T. Clarke High School Valedictorian Aashini Shah. “Whether it is employment, enlistment or further education, we need to remember why we were successful in high school. These lessons will be the ones we take into our adult lives.” East Meadow Principal Richard Howard and W.T. Clarke Principal Timothy Voels each thanked their seniors for making a difference through

community service and in the classroom, while also applauding them for all of their achievements and successes. Mr. Voels inserted a lyric from the song “We’re All in This Together” from the popular movie “High School Musical.” “We are successful because we are all in this together,” he concluded. “Class of 2018, I thank you for sharing your high school years with me and I am glad ‘we’re all in this together.’” After receiving their diplomas and moving their tassels to the left, the Class of 2018 took part in the traditional cap toss to put an exclamation point on the ceremony. The district congratulates both classes and wishes them happiness, prosperity and great success as they embark on their next journey.

Saluting the Flag Students at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District gathered on the morning of June 14th to honor Flag Day with a communitywide ceremony. The fifth-grade band welcomed guests with a lineup of patriotic songs, including “America the Beautiful” and “This Land Is Your Land.” Fourth-

graders acted as the color guard, carrying an American flag that was raised on the flagpole. In her opening remarks, Principal Jamie Mack discussed the importance of the American flag and the meaning behind its design, and selected fifthgraders displayed their illustrations of what the flag means to them. The

class then joined in chorus to sing Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” while those in attendance sang along. Among the attendees were parents, veterans and community residents, many of whom dressed in red, white and blue to show their support.

Top Athletes Honored During the Levittown Board of Education meeting, held in Levittown Memorial Education Center on June 13th, the achievements of the district’s top spring athletes and artists were recognized. Division Avenue and MacArthur high school student-athletes and their coaches were honored for their season accomplishments in

badminton, baseball, lacrosse, softball, tennis and track. In addition, 59 students were recognized for having been selected as Art Supervisors Association All-County artists. The district also congratulated the 10 student-artists whose artwork was selected for display in the hallway of the administrative offices. The district also thanked student liaisons Erin Cassano and Sonia Inderjit

for their service to the district. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald commented that their monthly reports about activities in the high schools were invaluable to central administration and the board of education. “The pride they displayed while reporting about their schools made us all so happy,” Dr. McDonald said.

Wellington C. Mepham High School marked its 80th commencement ceremony on June 24th at the NYCM Theatre at Westbury. Principal Eric Gomez, who completed his first year in the position, kicked off the ceremony by asking the Bellmore-Merrick Central District students to seek to find their purpose. “Think about what you are going to do with this chapter,” he said. “As you reflect, your experiences will certainly help define you. However, very little will happen unless you are willing to take some risks.

Salutatorian Isabelle Chan noted that her friendships, some since elementary school, enriched her Mepham experience and the school as a whole. “Mepham High School has forever been made better because you were here,” she stated. “Each and every one of us has made a mark on the hallowed halls and in the hearts of one another that will forever, resonate and be remembered for years after we close our lockers for the last time.” Valedictorian and Class President Gina Connors

Senior Awards Members of the East Meadow School District Class of 2018 were recognized for academic excellence with special scholarships along with district and community awards during annual senior awards ceremonies. W.T. Clarke High School honored its graduates on June 18th, followed by East Meadow High School on June 19th. Parents, administrators, board of education members, community leaders and scholarship sponsors joined the students on the two special nights to honor the soonto-be graduates. At W.T. Clarke, Principal Timothy Voels delivered opening remarks along with senior class president Megan Rodriguez. Various teachers and special guests presented students with specific honors

and awards throughout the night. Soon-to-be Superintendent of the Bethpage School District, David Schneider along with his brother, James Schneider, presented a scholarship in memory of their sister, Allison, to graduating senior Erin Connolly. Prior to awarding the seniors at East Meadow, Principal Richard Howard presented Class of 2018 Hall of Distinction inductees Bob Israel (1969), Neal Israel (1963) and John Mauceri (1963). Bob Israel is a producer, writer and actor that includes producing “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” as well as “Bachelor Party.” He is also the co-founder and former CEO of Aspect Ratio. An executive at both ABC and CBS, Neal Israel wrote the first “Police Academy” while

also directing and cowriting movies such as “Bachelor Party,” “Moving Violations,” “Real Genius,” “Look Who’s Talking Too” and “Surf Ninjas.” Mauceri was the first East Meadow student to attend Yale University before going on to win three Emmy Awards as a performer, writer and on-camera host. Organized by the school’s Planning and Management Team, the Hall of Distinction acknowledges exceptional alumni for their accomplishments in their individual vocational fields or contributions to the community. “Through their leadership, dedication and outstanding ability, we are pleased to celebrate the inductees’ successes and have them serve as role models for our current students,” said Howard.

District Retirees The East Meadow School District welcomed 27 of the 44 staff members retiring at the end of the 2017-2018 academic year during a board of education meeting on June 21 to acknowledge the individuals for their service and dedication. “On behalf of the entire district, I thank our retirees for their dedication to the students of East Meadow and for developing a love of learning among our children,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Card earlier this month. “I wish them much happiness as they

begin the next chapter of their lives.” The soon-to-be retirees and family members gathered at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center for a reception and awards ceremony hosted by the board of education. Those in attendance had given more than 600 years of combined service to district. Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administration, Anthony Russo, led the ceremony by announcing each staff member, while Assistant Superintendent

for Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. David Casamento, presented plaques of recognition to each retiree. Board trustee Brian O’Flaherty was also recognized for his 15 years of commitment and service to the district with a presentation to acknowledge his last meeting as a board member. “I’d like to thank Brian for his years of service and loyalty to the district and board of education,” said Board President Scott Eckers.

proudly waved American flags. At the conclusion of the event, the teachers thanked their guests for attending and sharing their children with them throughout the year. The group then separated into their classes as each student shared their first grade writing folder with their loved ones containing work from the school year.

Dream Big From 30 sixth-graders at Martin Avenue Elementary School, to 119 at Saw Mill Road, the North Bellmore School District graduated 319 students during evening ceremonies on June 20th. The programs included musical performances, student reflections and the presentation of diplomas. Ceremonies were held at a variety of locations, including Grand Avenue Middle School, giving Newbridge Road and Park Avenue graduates a chance to see the school they will attended for seventh and eighth grades. Seven Newbridge Road students shared their memories, with each selecting a different elementary grade to reflect upon. They recounted penguin day in kindergarten, learning to play the recorder in third grade and field trips to Project Adventure and Caumsett State Park this past year. Administrators congratulated the students on their accomplishments

and offered words of advice to the graduates. Superintendent Marie Testa told them to not only dream big, but to plan a course of action to achieve their dreams. It’s also OK for those dreams to change and to pursue other interests, she said, adding that middle school will give them new opportunities to explore. Newbridge Road Elementary School Principal Denise Fisher told students to remain humble and kind. “It turns out, according to all of the research, that the secret to success and fulfillment may very well lie in one’s ability to express humility and kindness,” she said. “These qualities lead to good health, good leadership and positive emotions.” Park Avenue Principal Eileen Speidel’s speech focused on grit. Looking Ahead School, reminded her graduates to use the knowledge and experience they have gained in the past seven years to make good decisions and make the world a better place. Musical selections captured the excitement of new beginnings, such as at Dinkelmeyer and Martin Avenue where students sang “We Won’t Stop Dreaming” and “I’m on Top of the World,” along with the respective school songs. The Saw Mill Road sixth-grade band played “Celebration Overture,” while the orchestra’s performance of “Our Heroes” paid tribute to all of the adults who have stood behind the graduates and supported them over the years. “Celebrate today with your loved ones, treasure them and keep them close,” said Martin Avenue Principal Leyna Malone. “For there is nothing, nothing, more important than the love of your family and friends.”

Eighth-grade students from Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools in the East Meadow School District look ahead to the next step in their scholastic careers following moving up ceremonies on June 20th. Woodland opened the day with a pair of ceremonies for the Class of 2018 as staff, faculty, administration and family members gathered in the building’s auditorium. Both the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Woodland String Quartet provided musical

entertainment at each ceremony. Principal James Lethbridge greeted the crowd with opening comments before the issuing of certificates. Select students called the names of their fellow peers during the presentation ceremony. That evening, W.T. Clarke welcomed guests to the high school gymnasium to celebrate the soon-to-be freshman. Middle school principal Stacy Breslin greeted the capacity crowd before the awarding of special achievements

and certificates. The presentation of certificates followed with a special slide show to recap the graduates’ past three years. Each principal ended their ceremonies with an additional congratulations and best wishes for the group as they prepare for high school this fall. Principal Breslin used the words from this year’s graduation song, “Most People Are Good” by Luke Bryan, to lead the class into a positive future.
