Thursday July 4 Artists on the Lane! They learned that Ronald McDonald House provides families from around the world a place to stay while seeking medical treatment for their children at little or no cost. They also discovered ways they can support the organization. The fourth graders were encouraged to sign up
with their families or Girl Scout or Boy Scout troops to participate in Ronald McDonald House’s Meals from the Heart and Little Hands Helping Little Hands cooking programs to provide meals to families dealing with medical treatments. After studying propaganda techniques used in advertising, they also created posters that were

Broadcasting Students Earn Top Awards Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Broadcasting students earned top honors at the BASH Awards at Stony Brook on May 3. Rocco Law and Brandon Hislop won first place for “Best Anchor Team” for their work on Sports Talk, out of 24 teams. “Rocco stays late, comes in early and goes above and beyond for the program,” said teacher Stuart Stein. “And Brandon is the perfect on-air foil for Rocco sharing his love of sports and always
being ready to challenge him.” Casey Fahrer finished second in category of Best School News Package. He was also recently selected to represent BellmoreMerrick as a National Youth Correspondent to the 2019 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University. “With a team made up of four freshmen, seven sophomores and four juniors, BMB was easily the youngest group of nominees at a senior-dominated
event,” added Stein. Mepham was one of only two schools in all of Nassau County to be recognized and one of only five schools to win or place in multiple awards. All of the students who attended the event were inspired and filled with ideas to take BMB productions to the next level for next year’s competition. BASH recognizes the most outstanding high school student work in broadcast journalism and video production.
Melillo Makes Music On May 1, orchestra, band and vocal students at Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy High School worked with composer/ conductor Stephen Melillo ahead of their evening concerts. One of the most internationally recognized composers for wind band music, Melillo is known for his techniques in concert music, revolutionizing the video game industry in terms of how they use music, film scores, TV shows, as well as multiple Pulitzer nominations for his music. “The transformation my students had in a total of less than four hours with Stephen Melillo was absolutely incredible,” said JFK Band Director Walter Avellaneda. “They understood passion and they understood how to
play their instrument with beauty and intensity at such an intense level. They played from their hearts in such a way that I have been silent and speechless about it since then.” “It’s always a meaningful experience when our students have the opportunity to work with professional musicians,” said Cheryl Fontana, the district’s director of the fine & performing arts. “We are so grateful to Mr. Melillo for sharing his knowledge and passion with our young musicians.” A special highlight of the event is that the music department commissioned a piece by Melillo, honoring Lorraine Poppe, the school’s late former principal. The piece, “To Love & be Loved,” will soon be released worldwide.
“We were able to send a recording of the work to Ms. Poppe and her family a few weeks ago,” explained Avellaneda. “Her sister said it was the last piece of music that she was listening to as she passed. They were playing it over and over for her; it brought their family much comfort during a difficult time.” Avellaneda said it was an honor to play for Poppe’s family who attended the evening concert. “Without her vision, the music program would have never flourished,” he added. “And now we are lucky to have the same endless support by Principal Gerard Owenburg who encourages these types of experiences; it is truly fitting that the piece was premiered on National Principal’s Day,” he added.

Flat Stanley Sent On A Journey Flat Stanley got to travel all over the country, thanks to students in Ellen Tournour’s second grade class at John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. The activity was based on a popular children’s book series by author Jeff Brown, and helped students improve their knowledge of United States geography. Each students created his or her own Flat Stanley and asked
to either send it a relative or friend in another state, or take it on vacation. Recipients of Flat Stanley were asked to take it to different places and keep a travel journal, before mailing it back to North Bellmore. The many Flat Stanleys went to California, Florida, Minnesota and Pennsylvania, among other states, and one went as far as Guatemala. The small paper dolls also enjoyed trips to museums, water parks
and famous landmarks, and accompanied his human companions to school, work and stores. The class created a map on a bulletin board detailing Flat Stanley’s journey around the world. Each child also made a life-size Flat Stanley by tracing himself or herself on craft paper. Students practiced math skills in measuring their different physical features to make their creations as realistic as possible.

Chatterton Talks TED elements of a great idea, researching, developing, and presenting an idea, creating visuals to tell a compelling story and using best practices for camera, lighting, and sound. Additionally, members of the Chatterton TED-Ed Club filmed a TED Talk for possible posting on TEDEd social media outlets, ed.ted.com, and the TEDEd Club YouTube channel. They joined a network of thousands of TED-Ed students around the world, all working to spark and celebrate the ideas of one another.
Chatterton students Keira Sheridan and Kyle Park recently gave their respective TED Talks at the June Board of Education meeting before Board members, administrators, teachers, parents and fellow students. Keira spoke about learning new things and stepping out of one’s comfort zone while Kyle spoke on the topic of why we forget things. Chatterton’s TED-Ed Club will be expanded to the fifth-grade next year while Merrick’s Birch and Levy Lakeside schools will each launch a TED-Ed Club of their own.
Bayer Selected For Elite Art Program Grace Bayer, a junior at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District, was recently one of 20 students from across the nation named a California Arts Scholar. She and the others
will attend the California State Summer School for the Arts program. “These participants are selected on the basis of their talent and creativity,” explained teacher Talon Bidermann. This rigorous, four-week
training program is aimed at improving high school students’ aesthetics and technique. Bayer’s ink drawing was also recently featured in the Long Island’s Best Juried Art Show at the Heckscher Museum of Art.

At Chatterton School in Merrick, 15 sixth-graders participated in the school’s TED-Ed Club, launched this year. Modeled after the popular TED Talks series of online discussions of ideas, the group met every day fifth day of the school cycle during lunch/recess time during the school year. The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and
he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Art + Tech Highlighted At Shows Both the Merrick Avenue and Grand Avenue middle schools combined arts and robotics to create electrifying shows on May 9 and 16, respectively. “At Merrick Avenue, the Robotics Club used Makey Makey kits to code messages and music from each artist when the clay ball was
pressed, completing the circuit,” explained Michelle Biancardo, a technology and coding teacher at both middle schools. At Grand Avenue, students hooked up Makey Makey kits to Chromebooks, where they coded various sounds, which was attached to students’ artwork.
“The balloons are attached to wires and copper tape, which acts like a conductor,” explained Dillon Moi, an eighth grader in the Robotics Club. “You are touching your hand to a conducting pad, while tapping a balloon to create various sounds.”

Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh elementary fifth graders marked an important academic milestone as they attended individual moving up ceremonies held in the high school auditorium. Each celebration was punctuated with photo montages and video presentations, as well as special musical performances that added to the sentimental occasions.
Principals Anthony Ciuffo, Marie Pisicchio and Dr. Randee Bonagura congratulated the students on this momentous academic accomplishment and assured them that they are ready and prepared for the challenges they will meet in middle school. During her address to students, Ms. Pissichio noted that giving into our fears holds us back. She
‘No Place For Hate’
Once again, all six schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been selected as No Place for Hate schools. Several staff members and students went to New
York City on May 23 for the convention. The Anti-Defamation League’s No Place for Hate initiative is a school climate improvement framework that provides
pre K-12 schools with an organizing framework for combating bias, bullying and hatred, leading to longterm solutions for creating and maintaining a positive climate.

Upon conclusion of the ceremonies, the graduates joined their peers and family members in the cafeteria for refreshments, at which time they thanked their teachers and said goodbye to classmates until the fall.

Random Acts Of Kindness Club Shore Road School’s fifth and sixth grade leaders in the Random Acts of Kindness Club shared their love of literacy with The Book Fairies organization. The students placed boxes in the school lobby for the collection of gently used books in April.
The Book Fairies is a nonprofit organization that collects reading materials for people in need throughout the New York metropolitan area. By providing books to those less fortunate, the organization can fulfill its mission to foster literacy
and academic success. After the book drive was complete, The Book Fairies representative Stephanie Freese collected the books from the RAK club and shared how the books are distributed, as well as the many volunteer opportunities available.
Students from W.T. Clarke Middle School and Woodland Middle School won several awards at the Long Island History Day event, held at Hofstra University. One pair of students advanced to the New York State History Day contest, which took place in Cooperstown. W.T. Clarke Middle School students, Faith Fuller and Shreejita Satpathy, earned fourth place in the Junior Group Documentary category for their project
“Frances Oldham Kelsey: The Thalidomide Crisis.” This placement made them eligible for the state contest. Umme Hani Bootwaia and Muaraka Ezzi of W.T Clarke Middle School received the Science History Award, sponsored by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, for their junior group exhibit, “A Heavy Water Sabotage: Operation Gunnerside.” Meanwhile, Maya Del Rosario of Woodland Middle School was awarded the Latin American History
Award, sponsored by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies, for her junior individual exhibit, “Diego’s Art Triumphs Over the Tragedy of the Great Depression.” This was the first year that the East Meadow School District participated in this competition. The Wantagh Board of Education and central administration announced the tenure of six faculty members and one administrator during a recent reception with colleagues and family, marking the most important milestone of their educational careers. Superintendent of Schools John McNamara noted that while evaluating the tenure recipients in their classrooms, he observed
faculty who braced the Wantagh school community, encouraged students to take risks in their learning and learned the individual needs of students. “These individuals have met and exceeded the district’s highest expectations,” he said.
