Charity Golf Outing After being rained out on June 3rd, The Association for Facilities Engineering AFE Chapter 4 Long Island will host their Annual Charity Golf Outing on Thursday, July 11th at the Lido Golf Course in Lido Beach with an 8:30 a.m. “shotgun” start. The AFE Chapter 4 chose Lido to show that LI has come back after Super Storm Sandy, especially in the Long Beach area, where a charitable donation will be
made, all while enjoying a great day of golf, food and fun, at one of Long Island’s top golf venues. The honoreee for this year’s outing is Mr. Joe Gathard, a noted business & community leader. Joe Gathard is vice president of All Service Electric, lnc. a leading electrical contracting firm on Long lsland serving businesses, schools and municipalities. A graduate Cadet Captain from La
Salle Military Academy in Oakdale, Joe was born in Valley Stream, NY where his grandparents were founders of the lnc. Village of Valley Stream in 1925. His love for community service and politics kept Joe busy as a Valley Stream volunteer fireman. His experiences with Rescue Company lead him to a post with Nassau County Police as a MedicalTechnician working on both ambulances and rescue
helicopters. He was elected and served two terms as a Village Trustee in Valley Stream and worked for the House of Representatives under Congressman Ray McGrath. Joe’s dad founded the family electrical business after World War ll where just about the whole family spent some time working. Then Joe’s oldest brother and he took the company to the next level acquiring other electrical businesses.

His teaching responsibilities include Employment Law, Labor Law and Business Law. He is also the NCAA Faculty Representative. Haller lives in Commack with his wife Celeste, a 3 sport college athlete, who teaches Life Science at Westbury Middle School. They have 3 daughters. Long Island Crisis Center (LICC), the 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline, is calling for volunteers to learn and implement crisis intervention through texting! While texting is often looked at as a recreational way to communicate, the Crisis Center recognizes its importance in facilitating in-the-moment support and help to those in need
and in critical situations. If you are skilled in texting, then your skills are important and wanted! The first step is to become a Counselor Assistant. This free orientation training program takes place over 3 three-hour sessions at the Crisis Center’s office in Bellmore. July’s training will be held on three successive Tuesday evenings from 7 to 10p.m. on July 9th, 16th and 23rd. August’s training

Talent Announced Fire Island Dance Festival, the most anticipated charity event of the season on Fire Island, returns July 19th through 21st, for its 19th edition. More than 40 dancers from worldclass dance companies will present a stunningly varied program spanning Broadway to ballet with the Great South Bay as their backdrop. Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. Normal? What’s that? Sleeping in your own bed? Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny
how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine. What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon. I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of
our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good. Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it. They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.

Many of the students invited important people in their lives or family members battling cancer to cut the students’ ponytails. During her opening remarks, Ms. Sposato told the students that she was devastated when she lost her hair during chemotherapy treatment and that the wig of real human hair brought her confidence back. “Every time I looked in the mirror,” she said, “the image of cancer was erased and was replaced by a person that was going to battle the ultimate fight of her life to be amongst her Salk family when treatments were finally over.”

In support of loved ones who are battling cancer, as well as cancer survivors throughout the country, approximately 60 students and staff
addition, over a dozen boys volunteered to have their hair buzzed in support of the school’s initiative, which was called Cutting For A Cure. All of the donated hair was utilized to make human hair wigs for women with cancer. Under the direction of teacher Nara Denson, the students had grown their hair during the past two years with the knowledge that the mass cutting would take place this June. The students became even more motivated after a popular teacher, Angela Sposato, was diagnosed with lymphoma, resulting in chemotherapy treatments. Fellow classmates cheered for the volunteers, who gathered in the school gymnasium and donned pink T-shirts designed with a breast

The 35th Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament will be presented. This tournament consists of a 6-player division and a 4-player division. All 6-player division games will take place on Saturday, July 13th, and all 4-player division games will take place on Sunday, July 14th. There is no rain date for this event. Registration is free and will continue through Thursday, July 12th, or until the roster is full. Players may only reigster for one team in either the 6-player division or 4-player division. Double registration will result in elimination of the second team. Registration will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays, at the Long Island State Park Headquarters, located in Babylon, Exit 37N off of the Southern State Parkway. Mail-in registration can be sent to: Volleyball Tournament, Recreation Department, and P.O. Box 247, Babylon, NY 11702. All 6-player and 4-player games will begin at 9 a.m. on their scheduled date. The Wisdom Lane Middle School auditorium was filled with applause and well wishes from family, administrators and staff as 163 students received their certificates of completion from the Levittown School District’s Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center program on Thursday, June 13th. Director Audre Midura congratulated the students on being part of the 31st graduating class, which has grown to accommodate programs including police science/EMT studies, cosmetology, computer animation, architectural drafting, automotive technology, carpentry, culinary arts, electrical technology, graphic arts and medical assisting. “All of you are on the right track for success and have been given an advantage
by receiving technical training,” Ms. Midura said. During the student address to the Class of 2013, SkillsUSA President Michelle Licciardo thanked the administration and staff for their support throughout her enrollment in the program and told fellow classmates that she would describe the program as exceptional. “Our experiences have prepped us for college and the real world,” she said. “In addition, I have learned a great deal about myself.” Student awards and scholarships were bestowed upon many of the graduates. Outstanding students also received commendations, including: Architectural Drafting – Louie Bruni Automotive Technology – Nicholas Genari and

Are We Ready?
This week, I am attending Boys State, a highly selective program for some of New York’s most promising leaders. These 1,000 boys will compete in a “mockgovernment” where we will learn about how our democratic system works. While there, every boy will be vying for the role of governor. Throughout the week, these high school juniors will campaign to achieve their goal of election. For many of these kids, it is their first taste of freedom. It is their first time away from home. This pressure could lead to homesickness, and ultimately the most difficult experience of
their lives so far. Some will crack under this immense pressure. Others will find it to be a support. Any way you slice it, this Marine-driven week will prove to be a struggle for every single kid involved. The long hours, the politics and the desire to return may be too much for some. Our bags are packed but are we ready? I don’t know for sure that I am, but I intend to find out. As we compete from the city level to the county level and ultimately at the state level, our desperation for success will increase. I hope to win the entire program, but there are no guarantees. Every
other boy embarking upon the same journey feels the same way about his chances. It is going to be a struggle not being able to communicate with my family; there are no cellphones allowed. Hopefully, my time at the American Legion Boys State Program will afford me the opportunity to join a second family. As one of the boys sponsored by the Police Benevolent Association of Suffolk County, I feel a lot of pressure to bring the title of Governor home. In doing so, I would be the first winner from Long Island in over twenty years. I hope to succeed, and I plan to make you all proud.

Six Long Island High School seniors were recognized for their exceptional writing contributions for the 1st Annual Long Island Authors Group (LIAG) Scholarship Writing Contest. The LIAG launched
this first annual scholarship writing contest several months ago, which was open to high school seniors in two Long Island School Districts: the Sachem School District and the Bellmore-Merrick School District. Candidates who
participated were given a guideline of 500-700 words and asked to write an essay based on the topic/question, “What Long Island personality, past or present, living or dead, has most affected your life and your life’s mission?”
“Honorable Mention” are: Stephanie Cillo, Nick Rooney, and Luke Hassan from Sanford H. Calhoun HS, and Kimberly Ponton from Wellington C. Mephan High School. According to LIAG President, Dorothy McPartland, the evening was remarkable. “We are proud to encourage the next generation of Long Island writers.” Sarah was thrilled to be the recipient of the LIAG scholarship award. “Thanks to the Long Island Authors Group. It is incredibly heart-warming to have published authors read and appreciate my work, and that a career ahead will allow me to write and be paid for it,” said Sarah. Sarah has since learned that she will be
receiving an award from the Long Island Press newspaper. She is active in her school, and has received recognition for her involvement. She was a Calhoun H.S. finalist for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) writing award this year; is an AP literature student, and is the managing editor of Hoofbeats, the HS newspaper. Sarah will be attending SUNY Geneseo as an English major in the fall. Kim Serpe, English District Chair at Calhoun HS, expressed her gratitude for the award, which recognizes the efforts of HS students who achieve high standards in their writing.
