he Garden Club at Winthrop Avenue School is in full bloom, thanks to the hard work of third and fourth graders, as well as the PTA volunteers who have supported them throughout the school year. Each Tuesday and Thursday, the club has met during recess, watering plants, cleaning up the garden, pulling weeds and adding topsoil and mulch while rotating the soil. More than 800 people, including some 300 cancer survivors, came together to celebrate survivorship and life with their families and Stony Brook University Cancer Center caregivers at Stony Brook’s annual National Cancer Survivors Day. The beautiful, bright June day brought many sunny smiles to those in attendance, as well as stories of hope from survivors ranging from the very young to those in their golden years. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are approximately 14 million cancer survivors in the United States. National Cancer Survivors Day is a global day of celebration that takes place each June. Despite progress

Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but

made treating many forms of cancer, collectively the disease remains the second most common cause of death in the U.S. “Cancer care at Stony Brook is advancing rapidly, and we are determined to remain on the cuttingedge of treatment to cure many forms of cancer as we look to the future,” said Samuel Ryu, MD, Deputy Director, Clinical Affairs, and Chair of Radiation Oncology at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. “Our Center is assembling ever-increasing teams of physicians and scientists to tackle the difficult issues of conquering cancer – teams that work together at the basic science level, translational research, and by launching new clinical trials.” During the event introduction, Dr. Ryu said that the growth of clinical care and research at the Cancer Center is best illustrated by the coming Medical and Research Translation (MART) building. The MART, slated to be a 245,000 square foot, eight story facility, will be devoted to cancer research and care and house an expanded Cancer Center with its outpatient services. “The upbeat energy here at Stony Brook and the vision of the Cancer Center leadership is really quite amazing,” said keynote speaker Doug Ulman, a threetime cancer survivor, President and CEO of Pelotonia, and former Livestrong President and CEO. “Talking to many of you inspires me, and seeing the commitment that Stony Brook has in its mission to cure cancer should inspire all of you and future patients treated here.” Ulman is a national cancer survivorship advocate. Continued From 4 chondrosarcoma during his sophomore years in college and malignant melanoma twice since, in 1997 he founded the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. This non-profit organization provides support, education, and resources to young adults, their families and friends who are affected by cancer. Stony Brook patients such as Maritza McGee, 45, an acute myeloid leukemia patient who received a bone marrow transplant, and Carmen Cali, 62, a patient treated for multiple myeloma for 10 years who has undergone two bone marrow transplants, stood out as rays of hope for the many Stony Brook patients still undergoing treatment. McGee, Cali and the hundreds of other survivors enjoyed the day, the comradery and unity they all shared, and the outdoor festivities for all – survivors, family, friends, and the Stony Brook Cancer Center physicians, nurses and staff.

Historical Lesson Scholars at the Long Island Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) regularly augment their studies with fieldtrips and lessons that help them apply what they are learning in real, hands-on ways. One such experience was their recent trip to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. P-TECH scholars were given an exclusive museum tour by the Cradle’s Competitions Coordinator Kerri MacKay. Around the world I many times flew, Skimming the firmament when gray turned to blue. In many places I have been, The Seven Wonders I have seen. I socialized with the poor and the rich, Visited the Taj Mahal and the London Bridge. Year after year on Independence Day, I joined into the cheers and firework play. Thus again I hope to elevate your feeling, Cause melodious chants to hit the ceiling. I want to relay the written word just right, Pass on positive ideas that spread delight.

A Night Of Ceremony It was a night of ceremony and recognition in the Bellmore School District on June 16th, as the Board of Education celebrated the achievements of students, acknowledged the retirement of beloved staff members and granted tenure. Day Of Patriotism In promoting a healthy lifestyle among students, Barnum Woods Elementary School held its first ever health walk, “Walk in the Woods,” on June 11th. The event was developed by the school’s Planning and Management Team, which consists of teachers, administrators, staff, parents and community residents. The event commenced

outside on Barnum Woods’ front lawn, where those in attendance participated in a Flag Day tribute. Students sported small flags, American flag headgear and other patriotic attire. There was the pledge of allegiance, followed by the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. Principal Gregory Bottari offered celebratory remarks and

thanked the PMT for its efforts in developing the health walk event. Afterward, kindergarten and first-grade students participated in a half- mile walk, and second- through fifth-graders engaged in a one- mile walk. Students at Parkway Elementary School recently collected new arts and crafts items to benefit the Sunrise on Wheels program. Sunrise on Wheels hosts crafts and interactive activities for children receiving chemotherapy

at local hospitals. The Parkway Elementary School Peer Leaders Club spearheaded the collection by researching the Sunrise Organization’s mission and then visiting each classroom in the school to explain how Sunrise on Wheels works and how

students could help other children by donating new craft items. The outpour of support from students and families was tremendous, and as a result, the club was able to receive a number of donations all for a worthy cause.

Celebrating The Flag American flag in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress and is a time to reflect on the importance of this symbol. At each of the schools, there were patriotic speeches and performances by the bands, as well as vocal performances. At

Wantagh Elementary School Sen. Michael Venditto encouraged the students to take time to honor the American flag. “It is important to see it as a symbol of our country,” he said.

More than 340 Levittown students and staff from all 11 district schools took part in the Cutting for a Cause event in support of the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Program. Coordinator Nara Denson explained that participants have been growing their hair for the past year in order make the eight-inch or more cut that will eventually be transformed into wigs to

benefit those recovering from cancer or illnesses resulting in hair loss. Salk Middle School teacher Angela Sposata, a lymphoma survivor, explained the importance of hair donation and congratulated the students and staff who selflessly donated their locks. “When you wear one of these wigs, the image of cancer is erased,” she said. “Your donations are

the greatest gift of life and one that never expects something in return.” The students then sat in rows while their “cutters” measured and tied off the required amount of hair. After the cut was made and the hair was collected, participants either received a voucher for a free haircut at a local salon or had their hair styled onsite.

New York State Senator Michael Venditto, had the opportunity to present New York State Senate Resolutions to Beatrice Brown of Merrick and Samuel Epstein of Bellmore. Both students are Seniors at John F. Kennedy High School and were named a semifinalist and finalist respectively in the Intel Science Talent

Search. Beatrice Brown’s home was almost destroyed by Hurricanes Irene and Super-Storm Sandy. She set out to find answers on storms and did an expansive research study that examined local storm data dating back 140 years. She will be attending Yale in the fall. Samuel Epstein’s

research looked at how microbes, both good and bad, might affect the daily diet of the fruit fly which lives 10 days on the average. He found that reduced food consumption correlated with longer life in the flies. He will be attending Haverford College. Congratulations!

EVERYDAY HERO - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray presented a Town of Hempstead Citation to Matthew Hartman of Levittown, who was presented with the “Everyday Hero Award” at the May 28th meeting of the Levittown Kiwanis. The event was held at LaFoccacia in Levittown. Also in attendance were Matthew’s parents, Matthew and Maria; brother, Thomas; and grandparents, Paul and Caroline Maltese.

The Garden Club at Winthrop Avenue School is in full bloom, thanks to the hard work of thirdand fourth-graders, as well as the PTA volunteers who have supported them throughout the school year. Each Tuesday and Thursday, the club has met during recess, watering plants, cleaning up the garden, pulling weeds and adding topsoil and mulch

while rotating the soil. To help beautify the area, the students also decorated popsicle sticks with inspirational words to place throughout the garden and created pipe cleaner Cheerio bird feeders. Stepping-stones created by a local Girl Scout troop were also added. “We’ve been very lucky to have very involved parents from the PTA who’ve been working with the students

twice a week to plant some carrots, tomatoes and more,” Principal Sally Curto said. “We also have flowers growing. It really is just beautiful.” Other items growing in the garden include peppers, strawberries, sunflowers, peas, string beans, radishes, and beets, and students will have the chance to taste some of these items before the end of the school year.
