Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex was a sea of blue caps and gowns as 330 MacArthur High School graduating seniors from Levittown’s Class of 2016 celebrated a long-awaited milestone during the school’s 55th annual commencement ceremony. Led by high school principal Joseph Sheehan, members of the administration and staff and board of education trustees, the graduates proceeded to their seats to the symphonic band’s playing of “Pomp and Circumstance,” performed under the direction of Joseph Romano. Class of 2016 President Nicholas Nocella led the graduates in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which the senior chorus, under the direction of Lisa Levenberg, sang the

Restaurant owner Butch Yamali chose to spare Larry the dreaded fate of a boiling pot, and called on Supervisor Santino to partner in a ceremonial pardon. “I have grown up on the water and I am proud to own restaurants that celebrate our nautical heritage and serve the finest seafood, but today, I am happy to join Supervisor Santino as he pardons Larry the Lobster,” said Yamali. Lobster harvesting is a major contributor to the nation’s $1.8 billion commercial fishing industry. The mightiest lobsters can grow to be fourfeet in length, and weigh upwards of 40 pounds. A lobster’s age is determined by counting growth rings hidden away in areas of the body including the stomach. Three out of every four Americans say they enjoy a lobster dish at least once a month. Restaurant surveys on Long Island indicate lobster is one of the most popular items on the menu, particularly each spring and summer. Peter’s Clam Bar purchases lobster and other seafood from local fishermen who sail Long Island waters in search of the freshest catch. “When you live near the water and fishing is a prominent local industry, you come to respect our creatures of the sea,” said Councilman Anthony D’Esposito. “By saving Larry the Lobster’s life we are preserving a part of our nautical heritage while celebrating the beauty and bounty of town waterways,” concluded Santino.

Joan Lorelli told the graduates that the reason behind all of them leaving Division Avenue High School is that it’s time to go. “It’s time to go forward with strength, courage and wonder, with lessons we’ve learned, moments we’ve shared and memories to treasure,” she said. “These are my last steps as the Mother of Dragons and your first steps as Division graduates.” In addition to good advice dispensed by U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald encouraged the graduates to continue to grow and make the district proud. Board President Peggy Marenghi also encouraged the students to “move out into the world and think with your heart.” Salutatorian Kristin Schmidt told her peers, “Every step you took helped to make you who you are and is meaningful,”

while class president Anthony Anzano urged peers to “remember who you are and where you come from.” Valedictorian Sepideh Vasseghi told the class that she believes Henry Clay was the most influential politician because, although he never became president, he fundamentally changed the course of history. She said, like Clay, “All the little things we’ve done have set precedents that will last for years to come.” After Board President Peggy Marenghi certified that the seniors had met the requirements for graduation, the students approached the stage to receive his or her diploma and to become alumni of the Levittown School District. Prior to joining their families, the Class of 2016 then watched a commemorative video presentation that featured short video clips and featured photographs of their year together.

Under the direction of Mark Martufi, the high school orchestra played “Pomp and Circumstance” as the graduates filed onto the floor with board of education trustees, administrators and faculty. Student Council President James Lunetta led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the concert choir’s singing of the national anthem under the direction of Paige Hardison. The East Meadow School District held its end-of-year district awards ceremony on June 8th to recognize its middle and high school students for their outstanding achievements throughout the year. Central administrators, board of education

members and faculty from all four schools congratulated the students on their accomplishments in art, athletics, business, journalism, writing, math and science. As the students accepted their awards, certificates and medals in their

respective categories, families and friends applauded their hard work, dedication and perseverance. The district congratulates these students on a successful school year.

Magic was in the hair at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District as 53 students or “hair fairies” and five teachers or “hairy godmothers” granted the wish of patients by individually donating eight inches of their own hair to create wigs through Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program.

The Beautiful Lengths program helps women battling cancer feel like themselves again by partnering with the American Cancer Society to make and distribute free real-hair wigs. Woodland Middle School held its “big cut” ceremony on June 13th, during which students in sixth through eighth grades and teachers

Magic in the Hair volunteered to have their family and friend sponsors cut off eight inches of their hair. Sponsors measured the hair with the help of Impressions Salon stylist Gina. Following the event, all students who donated their locks had their hair styled by volunteers from local salons.

In addition to learning core academic skills, Mandalay Elementary School students in Wantagh have been brushing up their manners with the Manners of the Month program. During this yearlong program, students focused

on one key “manner” per month including choosing words carefully, saying thank you and sorry, watching their tone of voice, demonstrating patience, complementing peers, greeting others and saying excuse me. Principal Marie Pisicchio

In his student welcome address, graduate Christopher Prainito encouraged his peers to be thankful. “Although it’s your accomplishment, it is also an achievement of those who have been there for you,” he said. In addition, Marni Hochman compared the lives of her peers to the lives of butterflies who have now broken through their cocoons to fly on to a new academic journey, while Layla Schechner compared life to a book and explained that each student is the author of his or her own story. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo told the students that the graduates have learned the tenets of leadership. “Now is the

opportunity for you to inspire others, which will help you develop your core and center as a leader,” he said. While Board of Education President Jay Breakstone told the parents that they are their child’s best advocate, he also noted to the students that parents will “always have your back.” The ceremony was punctuated with musical performances by the sixthgrade band and orchestra, as well as a choral selection by the class who sang “Best Day of My Life.” Each of the sixth-grade teachers then called the students’ names as they walked across the stage to receive their diplomas and to move up to middle school.

Second Place Two W.T. Clarke Middle School eighth-graders in the East Meadow School District competed in the National History Bee Finals, receiving high honors. According to its website, the National History Bee is an academic competition for elementary and middle school students that tests their knowledge of a wide

range of historical topics. Divided into three stages, students first complete an online qualifying exam. The top scorers on that exam then compete in the regional finals, and the top finishers in the regional competition advance to the national finals, vying for the title of National History Bee Champion. Within the competition,

Summer Prep Scholar Division Avenue High School junior Sisam Bhandari, has won a QuestBridge summer prep scholarship to attend a one-day conference at Yale University on the competitive college entrance process, followed

by a six-week art precollege stage workshop at the Rhode Island School of Design. QuestBridge is a nonprofit program that links high-achieving students with educational and scholarship

opportunities at leading U.S. colleges and universities. It includes the College Prep Scholarship for high school juniors and the National College Match program for high school seniors.

Career Ready Applause and well-wishes resonated throughout the Wisdom Lane Middle School auditorium as 153 students received their certificates of completion from Levittown’s Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center program on June 13th. L e v i t t o w n Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald thanked the graduates for their contributions, including ties made for the district concerts, printing jobs, senior citizen services and delicious catering. “We couldn’t operate without

you,” she said. In his opening remarks, Director Frank Creter told the students to follow their passion and to never stop learning. “Try to overcome the challenges that prevent you from becoming who you want to be,” he said. In her address to the senior class, SkillsUSA President Kimberly Herrera said that being enrolled in GC Tech’s program “helped us to realize that we must work hard to succeed.” Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes gave the students some

sound advice. “Don’t worry about the big goals. Go for the small,” he said. “And make yourself stand out and apart from others.” Student awards and scholarships were bestowed among many of the graduates, prior to being individually called to the stage to receive their certificates of completion. A slideshow developed by the computer animation students was then shown to the graduates and their families that recapped the school year.

A New Chapter It was a morning of celebration as Wisdom Lane Middle School students, dressed in ceremonial robes, attended the annual moving up ceremony. After the eighth-graders proceeded to their seats to the seventh- and eighthgrade band’s playing of “Pomp and Circumstance,” class representative Daniel Cisotto led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, while Jacqueline Testamark sang the “Star-Spangled Banner.” In his opening remarks, Principal John Avena noted that the graduates “showed up and moved up with style.” He told the class that their positive choices

and leadership style served as a model for the younger students. Division Avenue High School’s new principal John Coscia welcomed the eighth-graders. “Think, what do I want to accomplish at Division Avenue and then commit to it,” he said. High school student council co-president Sophia DeFranco dispensed advice to try new opportunities, balance academic responsibilities with extracurricular activities, and remain ambitious. After Jacqueline Devaney and Ravneek Kauer reflected on memories made during middle

school and those to come, Emily Fuchs and Deanna Tomaselli presented the class gift, a donation to Wisdom Lane Middle School’s food pantry. The students then marched across the stage to receive a Division Avenue High School lanyard, handed out by student council co-presidents Sophia DeFranco and James Lunetta. They then joined the eighth-grade chorus and cellists Leah Draluck, Emily Fuchs and Natalay Rodriguez in the performance of the popular song “Home,” marking the commencement of their middle school years.

Flying Their Flags The Wantagh School District’s elementary schools were a sea of red, white and blue as Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh students celebrated Flag Day on June 14th. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the

American flag in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress and is a time to reflect on the importance of this symbol. At each of the schools, there were patriotic speeches and performances by the bands and choruses, as well as the raising of

the flag on the schools’ flagpoles. “Today, we are honoring the freedoms our forefathers fought to protect,” Forest Lake Principal Anthony Ciuffo said. “We can be proud to be citizens of this great country.”

B e l l m o r e - M e r r i c k ’s Grand Avenue Middle School student Brandon Langone, a member of the Students Network of Cooperative Science achieved the ranks of high

honors in the New York State Science Congress on June 4th. His project “Which type of sensors would enable optimum performance for a robot on Martian-

like terrain?” earned him second place and a $200 monetary award. Science teacher and mentor Tami Cruz assisted Langone on his research and presentation.

Friendly Competition Exercise is an important component to Bellmore students’ education as seen in Shore Road School’s annual Sixth-Grade Track Meet. Under the direction of physical education teachers Mallory Cogen and Brian Scott, sixthgraders participated in a

four-week unit to increase their skills in running, jumping, balance and throwing. At the end of the unit, the students battled it out during a meet that included the 50- and 75yard dash, standing broad jump, and softball throw for distance. Mr. Scott noted that

Affecting Animals to apply skills they learned in class, such as writing and public speaking. “They learned to recognize their individual power to make change in the world around them and to build awareness for a cause at any age,” Ms. Grodin said. “They were so excited to see the animals they have been helping and the fruits of their labor.” After hosting a schoolwide assembly about their initiative, the fourthgrade students published

a monthly newsletter to solicit specific donations and followed up with monthly announcements over the school’s loud speaker to remind peers of the important mission. They also wrote letters to local pet stores to solicit donations to the shelter. The final project included a “No Sew” project, collecting dog sweaters and sweatshirts for privately owned animals for the cold winter months.

The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that the high school’s varsity baseball team secured the New York State Class A Championship title on June 12th with a 6-5 victory over Williamsville East High School, held at Union-Endicott High School in Endicott, New York. This is Wantagh’s first state baseball title since 1998. Jennifer Keane, director of health, physical education and athletics, said winning the

championship title was the result of the team never losing focus and skilled coaching by Keith Sachs and assistant coach Mike Ninivaggi. “Not only did the athletes put in the work, they came together as a team, never lost focus and set their sights on the end goal,” Keane said. Prior to garnering the state title, the team defeated Queensbury 2-1 in the state semifinal game, a team that boasted an undefeated season. Earlier this month, Wantagh also

won the Long Island Class A title, having defeated Mount Sinai High School, and the Nassau County Class A Championship title on June 1st, having defeated Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy High School. The district congratulates the students and coaching staff on this well-deserved accomplishment.

Winning Biz Model Liz Maher and Ryan Smith, eighth-grade students at Wantagh Middle School, were the first-place, proverbial $100,000 winning team of the business department’s biannual Shark Tank Challenge for their project “Camp Hope.” The nonprofit business would allow children fighting grave illnesses and their siblings to experience activities including sports, art classes, dance classes and more. Kristina Fuchs and Danielle Lynch were the second-place, $75,000 winners for their company called “Go to Med,” and Lauren D’Amore and Allison DePaulis were the third-place, $50,000 winners for their company named “Wagging Tails.” Under the direction of business management

teacher Nancy O’Connor, students enrolled in the eighth-grade business management course were required to participate in a final project called “My Business Idea!” The students worked as sole proprietors or formed a partnership, corporation or nonprofit organization with fellow classmates. The individual teams determined the business idea, name, logo and slogan, and startup costs and funding were researched. The students also created a website and completed a SWOT analysis to determine the company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and defined their target market and competition. During the Entrepreneurial Challenge

in June, also called the Shark Tank Challenge, students delivered a PowerPoint presentation detailing their companies to a panel of judges from local businesses. Included in their presentations were business cards, the description of a grandopening event and links to a charity organization. “These Shark Tank Challenge projects have brought a significant amount of innovation and enthusiasm to the business management class,” Ms. O’Connor said. “The students not only gained knowledge about the free enterprise system, they learned they can own their own business as long as they are willing to work hard and passionately.”

One team of eighth-graders from W.T. Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”

and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly
