Embracing New Beginnings with a performance of Lukas Graham’s “Seven Years Old.” In his opening remarks, Mr. Sheehan told the graduates that they stand ready and prepared to go after their dreams. “Belief and determination will help you to prevail,” he said. “Believe in yourself and you will accomplish more than you imagine.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald noted that she most admires the graduates’ commitment to others and urged the students to “make every opportunity count.” Keynote speaker John Thiessen related the story of his health problems during senior year and how they drove his passion to form the John Theissen Children’s Foundation. “Never give up and believe in your dreams,” he said. After the senior band’s musical interlude, salutatorian James May urged his peers to do

things they never thought of doing. “Dare to deviate from your comfort zone,” he said. “Make bold choices and make them today. Be the active hero of your own life.” Salutatorian Casey Pablo-Butcher revealed that the future scares her more than one would imagine. “Let’s embrace the unknown with open arms,” she said. Class president Emily Thomas also noted that fellow classmates should strive to live without so much stress and not give into the negative. After the students and audience watched a commemorative video presentation, Board President James Moran certified that the seniors had met the requirements for graduation. Each student then walked across the stage to receive his or her diploma to become alumni of the Levittown School District.

Recognitions and accolades abounded in the Merrick School District on June 13th as the district’s board of education honored the exceptional achievements of students and board members, as well as the retirement resolutions of faculty, during its meeting. The evening began with awards to honor musical accomplishments. These included 21 students who had performed in the Nassau Music Educators Association’s All-County Festival, six who had performed in the Long Island String Festival Association concerts and 130 who had participated in the New York State School Music Association Solo Evaluation Festival. In addition, for the third consecutive year, the district was recognized as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. “Thank you to the community, board of education, administration and faculty who believe that having a strong arts

program is important,” said Paul Graham, the district’s director of music. “These recognitions are only made possible because of your support.” Following, each principal bestowed the Board of Education Citizenship Award upon one sixth-grader from their respective schools for embodying the qualities and values associated with the district. This award acknowledges students who demonstrate an appreciation and respect for all, a sense of responsibility toward themselves and others, and an understanding and pride for the school and community. The award recipients were Paige Collazo from Birch School, Gabriella Klimov from Chatterton School and Peter Kourkoumelis from Levy Lakeside School. Continuing the evening of celebration, Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Banks received the New York State School Boards Association Board Excellence Award for her participation in leadership

development opportunities to enhance her knowledge and skills of school board governance. Closing the evening celebration, the board accepted the resignations of 10 district staff for the purpose of retirement, thanking them for their dedication and service to the students, community and families. The board wishes all retirees much health, happiness and good fortune during their retirement. Additionally, the board granted Birch School English as a New Language teacher Kristin O’Leary with tenure, effective Nov. 18th, 2017. “Tenure is a very important milestone in every educator’s career,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick Palma. “This achievement is an acknowledgement of dedication, perseverance, demonstration of excellent teaching skills, and that we want you to teach our students for a very long time.”

Led by Principal Joseph Sheehan, members of the administration and faculty and board of education trustees, the graduates proceeded to their seats to the symphonic band’s playing of “Pomp and Circumstance,” under the baton of Joseph Romano. Class of 2017 President Emily Thomas led the graduates in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which the senior choir, under the direction of Lisa Levenberg, sang the national anthem. Shore Road sixth-grade students Tyler Bissoondial, Riley Fried and Nick Ginnaris were first-place state winners in the 15th annual eCYBERMISSION competition, sponsored by the U.S. Army Educational Outreach program. The students each received a prize of a $1,000 U.S. EE Savings Bond. The goal of the annual eCYBERMISSION

competition is to encourage students to think creatively and critically while developing innovative solutions to a challenging community problems. The team of studentscientists, named Team Ozone, worked with adviser Dr. Terrence Bissoondial to characterize the effect of ozone on crop production and to find

ways to reduce its harmful effects. After their research was completed, the team submitted the official write-up of the project, called a Mission Folder, which was evaluated and scored by volunteer virtual judges. The Bellmore School District congratulates the students on this outstanding academic accomplishment.

Prior to receiving a plaque commemorating this momentous occasion and their collective 142 years of service, the trustees read a tribute about each of the honorees and thanked them for their unwavering

STEM Competition Winners

Students Showcase Their Gifts Sixth-graders shared their artistic and theatrical talents at the North Bellmore School District’s Student Arts League showcase on June 13th. Family members were invited to Newbridge Road Elementary School for skits and an art display. Classes in art and drama, which typically meet twice a month with teacher Alison Hill, are open to sixth-graders from the five elementary schools. An audition is required for interested theater students, and an art portfolio must be created for consideration in the visual arts program.

Students presented skits that they worked on over the last several months. They created the characters, wrote the scripts and stage directions, and chose the costumes. The skits were based on themes assigned to each group including bravery, friendship and mystery. “I was able to get better at acting and working together with groups of people,” said Martin Avenue sixth-grader Amanda Falls, who performed the skit “Lost and Found” with three other students. “It was an experience to remember.”

The visual arts students displayed the four projects they created this year including animal scratch art, wire sculptures, still-life paintings and mandalas. “The showcase gives parents the opportunity to see what we’ve been working on all year and to see how talented their children are,” Ms. Hill said. “The students take pride in their work and are really excited to share it with their families. We are privileged to have this program, which is a special place for children who are gifted in the arts.”

A Night of Recognition Prior to the June 13th Bellmore Board of Education meeting, students enrolled in the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, Winthrop Avenue and Shore Road schools were recognized for achievement in school service, as spelling bee champions and for participation in the Eugene Reichenthal Recorder Festival. In his opening remarks, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo congratulated the students on their accomplishments.

“You’ve proven that you are very special, and we know that there will be great things to come from all of you,” he stated. In addition to the 56 Student Advisory Council reporters and leaders, seven students were honored for their recorder skills, under the direction of teacher Erika Davis. Winthrop Avenue student Samuel Kalish and Shore Road students Otto Velting and Hayden Schneider were recognized as their school’s top spellers. In addition, Shore Road

student Tyler Bissoondial was recognized as a silver medalist in the Life Science category and as a recipient of the Naval Award for Excellence in Science during his participation in the New York State Science and Engineering Fair Broadcom Masters Division. Shore Road students Tyler Bissoondial, Nick Giannaris and Riley Fried were also honored as state and regional winners and national finalists in the 2017 eCYBERMISSION STEM Competition.

Building a Dream Home Levittown’s Salk Middle School sixth-grade students in Kimberly Welsch’s math class enjoyed a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics)

project in which they were challenged with designing their own dream homes. The students first roleplayed both the architect and the project manager. After measuring, using

formulas to calculate the area, and sketching floor plans to scale on graph paper, students brought these ideas to life by creating models of their schematic designs.

Celebrating the American Flag

The Wantagh School District’s elementary schools were a sea of red, white and blue as Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh elementary school students celebrated Flag Day on June 14th. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the

American flag in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress and is a time to reflect on the importance of this symbol. At each of the schools, there were patriotic speeches and performances by the bands and choruses, as well as the raising of

the flag on the schools’ flagpoles. At Mandalay School, select first-graders gave speeches about the flag’s symbolism and the country’s original flag, followed by patriotic songs including “The Fifty Nifty United States” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

After a standout fouryear athletic career, John F. Kennedy High School senior Ryan Cummings recently took first place at the New York State Track and Field Championships in the pentathlon. The pentathlon consists of five events: long jump, high jump, 110m high hurdles, shot put and the 1500m run. Ryan has been running track since the spring of his ninth-grade year. As a freshman, he was a standout hurdler in the 110m high hurdles. In his 10th-grade year, he began competing in the long and triple jump as well as the hurdles where he was a standout in all three

events. He was a county finalist in the hurdles as a sophomore. After a successful sophomore year, the thought was that based on Ryan’s athleticism and outstanding ability he would compete in the pentathlon his junior year, explained coach Chris Baker. Ryan competed in the pentathlon as a junior where he was the county champion in the pentathlon and earned AllState honors. “During the season, we focused on exposing him to all of the events that he would do in the pentathlon at each league meet,” said Baker. “Ryan is a standout in the high hurdles, the

long and the triple jump. He was division champion in these events and AllCounty in them as well.” Ryan competed at the prestigious Loucks Games where he was on the podium for the pentathlon and then he won the pentathlon at the Bulldog invitational. “At the state qualifier meet, Ryan was the man to beat and two athletes met the state standard for the pentathlon providing Ryan with the push he needed to improve his pent score,” added Baker. “At the state meet, he was seeded as one of the top athletes going in and came out the victor in the end.”

Recognition for Retirees The North Bellmore School District honored eight staff members who will be retiring at the end of the year, during the board of education meeting on June 8th. Together, the two teachers, five clerks and one custodian have given 180 years of service to the district. Park Avenue Elementary School will say goodbye to kindergarten teacher Susan Pais (24 years) and first-grade teacher Jeanne Griffin (18 years). Principal Eileen Speidel shared quotes from students and parents about the two educators. Other retirees include school secretaries Janice

Gentile (Martin Avenue School, 30 years), Dianne Lawson (John Dinkelmeyer School, 30 years) and Ann Marie Romano (Saw Mill Road School, 25 years), senior account clerk Sandy Finck (business office, 33 years), account clerk Grace Zuccaro (special education office, five years) and custodian Armando Caldas (Saw Mill, 15 years). Superintendent Marie Testa spoke about the retirees and their contributions to the district, and presented each with a gift. Other speakers included principals, department supervisors and representatives from the North Bellmore

Teachers Association. “We thank our retiring staff members for their service to the North Bellmore School District,” Ms. Testa said. “They have touched the lives of many children, inspired their colleagues and could be counted on to go above and beyond. We wish each of them health and happiness as they begin the next chapter of their lives.” Board of Education President Nina Lanci thanked the retirees for sharing their time and talents with the school district, and commented how much pride they have in their jobs.

Music for an Environmental Cause

Division Avenue High School’s Tri-M Music Honor Society, under co-advisers Matthew Nobile and Alison Sellars, hosted an Acoustic Café in the school’s Kim Foglia Memorial Garden on June 7th. Students and teachers Michael Bastone, Mark Martuffi and Alison Sellars performed in an openmic night format as they

enjoyed coffee and desserts. Approximately $300 in proceeds will be donated to the Landfill Harmonic Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay to assist with their travel and expenses. The Landfill Harmonic Recycled Orchestra is a Paraguayan musical group that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage. It is comprised of children of all ages, many

of which live in poverty and are not exposed to music education. Under the direction by Favio Chavez, the students make their own instruments out of materials found in a landfill, which covers a large portion of their everyday living environment. When their story went viral, the orchestra was catapulted into the global spotlight.

Word Masters Twenty-three thirdgraders from Northside School in Levittown were selected to participate in the Word Masters Challenger. Word Masters is a national competition similar to Mathletes, but instead of solving math problems, competitors in grades 3-8 solve word analogies. Members of Levittown’s first Word Masters team were selected by their classroom teachers based on their diligent work

ethic and were instructed and prepared by speech teacher Tracy Alber. The team met weekly for an hour after school to study vocabulary, word origins, parts of speech and definitions to prepare for the challenges. Mrs. Alber also devised online games for the students to play at home to reinforce their word knowledge. There were three nationally set tests given in the course of the year. A score of 20 was the highest

score that could be achieved on a test. The students had a great first year with Jianna Testamark named the overall Northside highachiever with a score of 17 on each of the three tests. Daniel Smith was the highscorer on an individual test with a score of 19, and Michael Dittmer was the most-improved Word Master, having doubled his score from the first to the last test.

Students enrolled in the Levittown School District took part in the Cut for a Cause event in support of the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Program. Coordinator Nara Denson explained that participants enrolled in the district’s 11 schools have been growing their hair for the past year in order make

the eight-inch or more cut that will eventually be transformed into wigs to benefit those recovering from cancer or illnesses resulting in hair loss. This year, school’s individualized their events. At East Broadway, the 41 girl volunteers chose a special person in their lives to make the initial

cut. Wantagh’s Glamour Addicts Salon then treated the girls to haircuts. At MacArthur High School, students lined up in a salon-style environment, where their hair was measured and then cut by professional stylists. More than 40 students, both male and female, made the cut.

Celebrating Kindness Members of Bowling Green Elementary School’s Goodwill Ambassadors, Bridges to Friendship club and Bully Prevention Squad received an endof-year celebration for their kindness, devotion and success during the school year. All three organizations spend their time volunteering to break isolation among students and prevent bullying within the school, lunchroom and at recess. Goodwill Ambassadors in grades two and three

volunteer twice a week to interact with students who are alone during recess and notify the staff if there is any bullying going on. Members in grades four and five spend one day a week interacting with isolated students as well as assisting lunch aides with kindergartners and firstgraders during their lunch periods. Student volunteers of Bridges to Friendship assist special needs students, as well as report any issues of bullying in

the school, on the buses, in the lunchroom and during recess to members of the Bully Prevention Squad. The Planning Management Team, school social worker Steven Sacks, administrators, faculty and parents organized the endof-year bash, providing pizza and ice cream to the volunteers and bestowing certificates of recognition upon all members who have helped to make Bowling Green a better place.

Division Avenue High School senior Sean O’Regan has received the National Football Foundation’s ScholarAthlete Award. Sean is a four-year member of the varsity football team and served as captain during his senior year. He also received the prestigious Jerry Jewell Award for, “Keeping the winning tradition alive.”

Along with his play on the gridiron, Sean was previously a member of the high school’s junior varsity and varsity baseball teams and served as assistant captain for the Levittown varsity hockey team. Sean’s dedication goes beyond athletics. During his high school tenure, he was a member of the school newspaper, the Emmy Night committee, School

Development Committee and served as a Peer Leader. He also volunteered his time to the Levittown West Little League and Levittown Soccer Club where he coached middle school athletes. Shore Road School sixthgraders celebrated their successes during their primary years of education while looking forward to their future in middle school during the annual moving up ceremony, held in the John F. Kennedy High School auditorium on June 19th. After a flag salute by Rachel Oppenheim and the presentation of the colors by Courtney Becker, Vincent Dragonetti, Daniela Russo and Ava Zampetti, Principal Patrice Matthews welcomed the parents, students and staff to the celebration of a very important educational milestone. “You are ready to become true ambassadors of our leadership principles,” Mrs. Matthews said. “You have all shown us what it means

to be a shining star.” Student speakers Brooke Horowitz, Amanda Levine and Hailey Newman reflected on their years at Shore Road, while the sixth-grade band and orchestra performed musical interludes of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin” and John Lennon’s “Imagine.” The class also entertained their parents with a collective choral performance of popular songs “Time of Your Life” and “Home.” In his remarks, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo described the definition of a leader, “When you see the worth and potential in someone else and it becomes so clear that we see it in ourselves, that is the definition of a leader,” he said. “You are

future leaders.” Board of Education President Marion Blane also told the class she is proud of them and urged them to “keep reaching for the stars.” In addition, PTA representatives Michele Aurigema and Natalie Molloy also requested that the graduates dedicate themselves to being even better and not to be in such a rush to grow up. After students Riley Fried, Arisara Soontarodom and Gabrielle Weinstein presented the class gift to Mrs. Matthews, a framed photo of the Class of 2017, the sixth-grade teachers, trustees and administrators presented certificates of completion to the graduating class, marking their completion of elementary school.

Statewide Recognition The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has named Tom Cuff, a 64-year member of the fire service and longtime Levittown Firefighter, as the 2017 recipient of the FASNY Fire Achievement Award. This statewide honor recognizes Cuff’s efforts for more than six decades to fight for added safety measures in construction, such as residential sprinklers and changes in national codes and standards that have helped better protect millions of residents in New York and across the country. In addition, Cuff has been a staunch advocate for enhanced firefighter death benefits and has helped countless grieving families of fallen heroes help navigate the process of obtaining the benefits owed to them as a result of their loved one making the ultimate sacrifice. “Tom has been working non-stop for more than 60 years to put the safety and needs of his fellow firefighters and their families front and center,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this recognition. It is my pleasure to announce Tom Cuff as the 2017 FASNY Fire Achievement Award winner.” Tom Cuff began his volunteer fire service career in 1953 when he

joined the Garden City Fire Department. In 1961, he settled down with his wife Jane and became a member of the Levittown Fire Department. He has held a number of leadership positions in the fire service over the years, including Captain of Levittown Ladder Company 1, Fire Department Secretary, Fire Department Treasurer, and 20 years as Levittown Fire Commissioner. In addition, his service has extended to include President of the Nassau County Firemen’s Association, President of the South Shore Fire Departments Association, President of the Southern New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association, and finally as FASNY President; where he led efforts on behalf of the State’s 110,000 volunteer firefighters. With a degree in Business Administration from Adelphi University and experience in engineering and other disciplines at LILCO, Tom brought a slightly different perspective to the volunteer fire service. He often studied and investigated new laws that provide firefighter benefits. When Congress enacted the Public Safety Officers’ Benefit Act (PSOB) in 1976, most in the fire service paid little attention as Washington was still recovering from Watergate.

Thankfully, Tom was already researching this new benefit for firefighters. For more than three decades, Tom has helped families of deceased firefighters across New York State successfully navigate the federal Department of Justice’s paperwork and procedures. He even keeps a preformed set of documents he designed himself on his home computer, helping him quickly and efficiently start this process after each fatality. (The National Volunteer Fire Council published and nationally distributed a guide authored by Tom on how to file a PSOB claim that included these documents.) In addition, Tom has been a leader in the charge for the passage of residential sprinkler requirements and has been involved with national codes and standards. He led a group of fire service experts to push the requirement that hotels display room numbers and fire exits one foot from the floor – ensuring that both guests and firefighters can orient themselves while navigating smoky hallways. It is in recognition of all of these accomplishments that Tom Cuff is named FASNY 2017 Fire Achievement Award Winner.

The East Meadow Union Free School District’s Board of Education recently unanimously appointed David Casamento as the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Mr. Casamento returns to East Meadow after a 27-year educational career that began in the district as an AP chemistry/ biology and chemistry teacher at W.T. Clarke High School in 1990, a position he held until 2005. Mr. Casamento most recently held the position of director of science and technology for the East Williston Union Free School District, a post he held for seven years. In this position, he was responsible for the supervision and evaluation of the science, technology and instructional technology teaching staff, as well as curriculum alignment and development, professional development and
