Looking Onward introduced at the podium where she shared her experiences of seeing the students put their skills in action, whether in class or at an event. “We are so proud to share Levittown Memorial High School with this bright group of students,” she said. “We wish you the very best of happiness as you continue your journey in life.” Frank Creter, director of art, career and technical education also commended and reflected on the graduating class. “I’m incredibly proud of you for reaching this pinnacle in your life,” he said. “I have been impressed by your work, your accomplishments and your dedication to the program. You have made a commitment to succeed
and created a pathway to your future.” In his student address to senior class, SkillsUSA President Christian Hernandez spoke about his valuable experience at GC Tech and the friendships that he formed along the way. He praised faculty members for giving his graduating class the support they needed to succeed and expressed how proud he was of his peers. Student awards and scholarships were bestowed among many of the graduates, prior to being individually called to the stage to receive their certificates of completion. To conclude the ceremony, a slideshow was presented with photos of the seniors throughout the program.
Anticipation and excitement filled the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex at Hofstra University on June 16th as 301 students from General Douglas MacArthur High School’s Class of 2018 prepared to commemorate the next chapter of their lives. Dressed in blue caps and gowns, students entered the complex surrounded by proud family and friends to “Pomp and Circumstance” conducted by band director Joseph Romano. At the opening of the ceremony, senior choir members performed the National Anthem and the song “My Life” by the Beatles. confidence.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald addressed the graduates and their families as she spoke about the students’ journey from kindergarten student on the first day of school to high school graduates, ready for adulthood. “As you undoubtedly continue to grow and succeed in life as you do, don’t forget you will always be part of the MacArthur family,” she said. “If you need us, just call because after all, once a General, always a General.” Keynote speaker and MacArthur High School alumnus David Falk received a plaque from Dr. McDonald and Principal Sheehan to commemorate being inducted into the district’s 2017 inaugural Hall of Fame before he addressed the graduates. Falk, the CEO and founder of Falk Associates Management Enterprises shared his experience growing up and his road to success. “Make your journey fun, make your journey
memorable and make an impact,” he said. In addition, salutatorian Yingyue “Maggie” Liu, class president Delilah Spinelli and valedictorian Helen Zhang each spoke during the ceremony, reflecting on their years as a student and encouraging their fellow graduates to follow their dreams. Before the presentation of diplomas, a video presentation which highlighted the graduating class was shown, followed by commendations from Board of Education President Peggy Marenghi. One by one, each student was announced on stage to receive their diplomas and was congratulated by Principal Sheehan, Dr. McDonald, central administrators, members of the board of education, Levittown Council of PTA’s President Mary Rickard, Falk, Nassau County Legislator John Ferretti and Town of Hempstead Councilman Dennis Dunne as they officially completed their time at MacArthur High School.

Claps Career and Technical Center’s Class of 2018 entered the auditorium of Wisdom Lane Middle School for GC Tech’s commencement ceremony on June 11th. District administrators, board of education members, faculty and loved ones were in attendance for the big day as certificates were presented and student awards and scholarships were given to exceptional students in the program. Green & White & Golden Memories Get Cracking Lobster Night Is Back whose dream job it was to become a clubhouse reporter for the New York Yankees. Big dreams indeed for a girl who had never held a job outside of a part-time assistant teaching gig at her local dance studio. But that’s what high school was for, to cultivate those lofty goals and give birth to the endless possibilities borne from a college education and our eventual entrance into the great workforce. I often wonder how many of us wound up doing anything comparable to that which we aspired to on that particular day, some 18 years ago. How many ever truly know what they want to be when they grow up? Perhaps we’re not supposed to. Much has changed in the nearly two decades that have elapsed as we spread our wings and went our respective separate ways in the search for a lifetime of fulfillment. For some, college called, degrees were earned and positions accepted at prestigious corporations. For others, the path evolved a bit differently, perhaps in settling down to start
a family and build a home, or to explore other creative outlets and passions en route to a less traditional existence. To each his or her own, as they say. Ten years later, at our first reunion gathering, we reconvened as a class, a bit older and a tad wiser; overall, though, not much seemed to have changed. Looking across the bar at the old familiar faces, it was as if no time had passed. In the blink of an eye, we were back on that field, decked out in our Bulldog green and white, the world at our fingertips. In just two short years, we will likely gather once again, this time at our 20th reunion. How will the stories have evolved? What new tales will we have to share? Will the past still seem as easily within reach as it once was? I have a feeling it will. As they say in my district ~ Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog ~ and it’s true. To the graduating Class of 2018 . . . may your memories be just as fond 18 years from now as they are today. Mine certainly are.

As I write these words, the Class of 2018 prepares to march onto the old Kienle Field at Lindenhurst Middle School to the familiar strains of Pomp & Circumstance. In just a few short hours, they will embark on the next chapter of their lives, as proud alumni of Lindy High, the last dozen or so years of schooling an already-fading memory. I remember it like it was yesterday. June 25th, 2000, a Saturday morning. Hundreds of folding chairs lined the old grass field, as our parents and loved ones perched on the wooden bleachers excitedly waiting for the ceremony to begin. Behind the scenes, in the locker room of the gymnasium, I paced nervously in my cap and gown, binder in hand, silently running through the words of my valedictory address. As my guidance counselor passed by, she glanced my way. “Do you need a piece of gum Jamie? You look a little green.” And green I was, as I stood on the stage a few moments later, listening to our principal introduce me as the student

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

Ready for the Future Jonas E. Salk Middle School eighth-graders are now ready to take on the academic challenges of high school. More than 300 students were poised to start this new chapter as they participated in the school’s annual movingup ceremony, held in the gymnasium on June 8th. After a salute to the flag, led by Matthew Papach, and the eighthgrade chorus’ singing of the national anthem, under the direction of Lisa Levenberg, words of congratualtions and
wisdom were dispensed by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald, who encouraged the students to get involved in high school. “The responsibility for your education will be yours, so grab it,” she said. Principal John Zampaglione told the graduates they are prepared to meet the challenges in high school. “Listen to your inner voice to decide what is right for you,” he said. Prior to the distribution of moving-up certificates,
academic awards and other special awards were presented. The students then walked across the stage to shake hands with members of the board of education, central administrators, faculty and local government representatives, symbolizing their entrance into high school. The students then joined the eighth-grade chorus for the last time, led by Cassidy Balthazar, to sing Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Look Back.”

Giving Back to the Community Students from Nassau BOCES Center for Community Adjustment spent this past year working toward the goal of giving back to the community. As part of their course work, the class attended woodshop at Career Preparatory High School.
During the year, the students created seasonal decorations from recycled wood pallets. The project was student planned and production included designing a template, cutting wood, painting, decorating, and assembly. After completing these decorations, the students
sold them for a profit. It was then decided that the monies received would be donated to a worthy cause. “The students selected the Ronald McDonald House because they feel it is important for families to stay together in times of need,” explained teacher Kim Romeo.
Along with good mental health, MHAW recognizes the importance of physical health. Classes include an array of indoor and outdoor physical activities, as well as the chemical free garden right near their Ronkonkoma facility. In the garden, people learn how to grow their own food while connecting to the natural environment. Vegetables, fruits and herbs are donated to Charlotte’s Table food pantry, open each Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., which serves the broader community. Anyone interested in

MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Hosted by Founding Sons Law Enforcement/Military Motorcycle Club and Impressive and Aggressive Motor Club, attendees will visit up close with event registrants and their beautiful motorcycles, custom and classic cars. The day includes live entertainment by Muddy Johnson, while Johnny Numonic spins the tunes and attendees enjoy an array of food options, unique vendors and fabulous raffle prizes. The entry fee for motorcycles and cars is $20; for walkins, it is $5; and for children under 12, it is free. Buddy Benches The best friends in life are made during childhood, according to John Berry, a Boy Scout from Troop 192 and a graduate of Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. That theory inspired his Eagle Scout project, which was approved by
the North Bellmore Board of Education on June 7th. John presented his plans to add two buddy benches at Martin Avenue, along with a brick deck and two wooden planters. Engraved bricks would be sold as a fundraiser for the project and the planters could be painted by elementary students at a later date.
The benches would be adjacent to the playground, and would be a place for students to socialize, as John said his goal is to foster friendships. He is a 2013 Martin Avenue graduate and will be entering his senior year at Mepham High School.

Graduating seniors from both East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools were afforded the opportunity to return to their elementary schools on June 20th before graduating from the district. Parkway Elementary welcomed back nearly 75 members of the East Meadow Class of 2018 who graduated from the school seven years ago. Barnum Woods and McVey Elementary schools also greeted alumni from East Meadow High School. Meanwhile, Meadowbrook and Bowling Green elementary schools were able to celebrate seniors from both W.T. Clarke and East Meadow high schools.
Current students, faculty and staff at each building lined the hallways to cheer on the graduates as they walked the hallways they once did as elementary school students. Students also created posters to congratulate, welcome back and encourage the soonto-be alumni. This marks the first year of the ceremony for the district. Special thanks to the principals and staff at Barnum, Bowling Green, McVey, Meadowbrook, Parkway and both high schools for making each of the senior walks a success.

Recognizing Retirees
The North Bellmore School District Board of Education honored its retiring administrators, teachers and staff members at the June 7th meeting. This year, 10 people are retiring who have a combined total of 261 years of service to the district. Fran Bennett worked in North Bellmore for 29 years, including as principal of the Saw Mill Road and Martin Avenue elementary schools. She spent the past two years in the central office.
Retiring faculty members include Saw Mill Road Elementary School second-grade teacher Cathy Batch (32 years), John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School reading teacher Mary Ann Collins (20 years), Martin Avenue Elementary School reading teacher Laura D’Amato (30 years), Dinkelmeyer fifthgrade teacher Jill Drum (28 years), Dinkelmeyer firstgrade teacher Maryann Doherty (37 years), and Dinkelmeyer reading teacher Deborah Zaglin (21
years). Additional retirees include Saw Mill Road occupational therapist Linda Nussbaum (17 years), maintainer Bob Shimer (20 years) and paraprofessional Kathleen Bauer (27 years). Superintendent Marie Testa and the respective building principal spoke about each retiree. Ms. Testa presented them with gifts and thanked them for their tireless service on behalf of the children of North Bellmore.

Wantagh High School senior Erin Hogarty received a Merit Award during an award ceremony for the Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar Artists Program, held at the Tilles Center for Performing Arts at LIU Post on May 29th. Presented by the New York Community Bank Foundation and produced in cooperation with Newsday, the LIAA Scholar Artists Program recognizes students in the areas of
13 competition, the Art Supervisor Association’s All-County Art Exhibit and the Heckscher Museum of Art’s Long Island’s Best Exhibit. She was also an honorable mention winner in the 2017 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, designed the poster for the high school’s 2017 art show and received a scholarship to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design program over the summer to study imaginative character design and storytelling through 2D animation. The district congratulates Erin on this outstanding academic accomplishment and continued best wishes for success in her art studies.

Hot Off the Press Bellmore School District’s Shore Road Newspaper Club published its first school newspaper, the Shore Road Times. This was the first year the school sponsored a newspaper club, and adviser Linda Lebowitz
said the sixth-grade members utilized their teamwork and synergy to create a document filled with school news, opinion pieces, movie reviews, an advice column, sports coverage and more. Meeting before school, the
students worked as writers, editors, photographers and artists to complete a paper with information that appeals to peers. The Bellmore faculty congratulates the students on this outstanding accomplishment.

Eighth Grade Honors A sea of eighth-graders at W.T. Clarke Middle School in the East Meadow School District assembled in the school’s auditorium on June 11th for the school’s annual awards ceremony to recognize their academic, civic, philanthropic and athletic achievements. In attendance to congratulate these accomplished
students were proud district officials, faculty, parents and peers. Principal Stacy Breslin and Assistant Principal Linda Lynch delivered welcoming remarks and shared words of encouragement about the honorees before various teachers and school and district administrators presented them with
their awards. They also offered best wishes to the students before they enter high school this fall and congratulated all on a job well-done at the middle school. “[You] are the leaders of our school,” Breslin said. “And remember, the true reward lies in knowing you did your best.”

Kid Ed Camp Fourth-grade students at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District put together their own Kid EdCamp on June 12th as part of an interactive experience designed to recognize the strengths and successes of all students. The practice is intended to foster
community, collaboration and a growth mindset while also empowering them to become leaders. Topics from the fourthgrade presentations included karate, creating squishies, slime and origami, as well as Kahoot! quizzes on Harry Potter, dinosaurs and science. Fifth-grade students
led a Kid EdCamp on June 7th. In both grades, students who were not leading sessions were able to participate and interact with their peer instructors. The sessions were broken down into three 20-minute segments where students could choose which topics they would like to attend.

Wearing plastic gloves and carrying large garbage bags, students from Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District took to the streets on June 8th to clean up their neighborhood. Volunteers for the afterschool cleanup included students, teachers and
parents. Principal Leyna Malone said the idea came from the school’s Shared Decision-Making Team as a way of living the school district’s mission of contributing positively to the community. The youngsters picked up any garbage they could find as they traveled
along Oak Street and onto Bedford Avenue, the local downtown. Student Bella Parzych said she volunteered to participate because garbage is bad for the trees, plants and animals, and also because she wants to live in a community that is clean.
Hero Day There was not a dry eye in the house as secondgraders in Christine Pase and Michelle Matos’ class at Summit Lane Elementary School hosted their hero celebration on June 7th for the special loved ones in their lives. Each student invited a family member who they consider their hero to the event to show their love and appreciation through music, handmade gifts and speeches. The students’ gratitude for their heroes were displayed throughout the room with different
classroom projects which coincided with their computer units under the direction of computer teacher Susan Riggs. At the front of the room, a table featuring framed photographs of each student and their hero was showcased as well. Families sat at decorated tables as students performed “God Bless the U.S.A.,” “I Can’t Smile Without You,” “Everyone Needs a Hero” and “Through the Years.” Each student also spoke at the podium, reading their personal speeches about

their hero which included their favorite memories with their hero and why their hero makes them feel special. After each speech, students embraced their hero and presented them with a laminated book as a sign of their appreciation. To conclude the ceremony, a slideshow was presented which featured a picture of each student as a baby, followed by a picture of the student with their hero. Students and families were then invited to enjoy refreshments together.

Reason 2 Smile accompanying children’s home. During an assembly in which the students presented the check to executive director Donna Rosenblum on June 13th, Principal Patricia Castine explained that leadership is seen in the community service performed by the district’s students. “To be a true leader, you have to go further in the world,” she said. “Part of being a leader is caring about the world.” Ms. Rosenblum gave
a presentation on life in Mtwapa, noting the differences between living in Kenya and the United States. She also showed the students photos of the school and the accompanying home, as well as photos of her trips to visit the children housed there. Rosenblum also thanked the students for their generous donation and donated Patricia Newman’s “Neema’s Reason to Smile” to the school library.

District Leaders Prior to the June 12th Bellmore Board of Education meeting, students enrolled in the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Learning Center, Winthrop Avenue and Shore Road schools were recognized for achievement in school service and academics during the annual Recognition Night held in Shore Road School’s auditorium. Board Vice President Maryanne Kelly congratulated the students on their achievements during the 2017-2018 school year and thanked them for their leadership contributions to the school community. To those in attendance, she said, “These students took time
out of their day to make Bellmore special.” Fifty-six Student Advisory Council reporters from Reinhard and Shore Road and Winthrop Avenue School Student Council Advisory Council Leaders Daniel Lin (president), Casey Cerami (vice president) and Jared Cohen (secretary) were honored for school service. In addition, Jenna Blacker (first place) and Liam Marrow (second place) from Winthrop Avenue School and Kyle Kirshenbaum (first place) and Ariana Khan (second place) were honored for their fourth-grade and sixth-grade spelling bee talents, respectively. Board trustee Jay L.T. Breakstone also received
a coveted Lifetime Achievement Award from New York State School Boards Association Director for Nassau County Robert Schoen for school leadership. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph A. Famularo and the board of education also granted retirement to Reinhard librarian Theresa Ventimiglia, who has served the district for the past 20 years. Self-Defense Program Heather Berberich, a junior at Sanford H. Calhoun High School, recently completed a Girl Scout Gold Award by researching and piloting a self-defense program as a unit during gym classes. Berberich, 17, said she was motivated to instill a sense of empowerment in her peer group.
Under the guidance of physical education teacher Gregg Muscarella and Athletic Director Richard Diodati, the program involved a local instructor from Goshinkan Ju-Jitsu Dojo in Merrick who offered various self-defense techniques. “I settled on jiujitsu because it focuses on
getting away safely,” she said. “The ultimate goal was to teach students how to get themselves out of a potentially dangerous situation utilizing nonviolent maneuvers,” Berberich said. “These life skills could be carried over forever.”
Outstanding Artists Honored The Merrick Board of Education and administration recently honored the district’s exemplary student artists and their teachers. Certificates of Recognition were awarded to students from Birch, Chatterton and Levy Lakeside schools who were selected for this year’s 2018 All-County Art Exhibition. Additionally, each school principal presented Merrick Star T-shirts to their respective students who advanced to the state level of this year’s

BOE Honorees
During the Wantagh Board of Education meeting held on June 14th, the trustees and administration announced and accepted the retirement of Francine Browne, John Cuiffo and Gloria Petersen. Browne, a high school special education teacher, has served the district since 2001, while Cuiffo, an elementary physical education teacher, served the district since 1984. Gloria Petersen joined the district in 2005 as a part-
time school monitor. Superintendent of Schools John C. McNamara congratulated and thanked the retiring faculty for their dedication to the district’s students and service to the Wantagh community. In addition, Wantagh High School students Ashley Bailey and Ryan Kushner, who attend Levittown’s Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center Program, were recognized for their accomplishments in the SkillsUSA New York
State competition held in Syracuse on April 25th27th. Ashley was a firstplace winner in the arrest tactics demonstration. She was also recently named GC Tech Student of the Month for her skills in police science. Also Student of the Month in police science, Ryan placed third in the Employment Application Process category on the state level, and placed first in this category during the regional competition held in March.

Award Recognition Following a year of research and experimentation, seventhand eighth-grade students from East Meadow’s W.T. Clarke Middle School were honored for their hard work at the Long Island Science Congress Awards Ceremony, held at Saint Anthony’s High School on May 22nd. Long Island Science Congress, Inc. is an adjudicated exhibit of science projects by students of Nassau County and Suffolk County middle schools, junior high schools and senior high schools, sponsored by the Long Island Section
of the Science Teachers Association of New York State. LISC began in 1949 under the auspices of the New York State Science Teachers Association and The Nassau Daily ReviewStar. Members of Carol Simowitz’s eighth-grade earth science research class and Wendy Wansor’s seventh-grade science honors class were presented with a variety of accolades for their projects submitted to the Junior Division of LISC, including Future Scientist, High Honors and Most Distinguished Categorical Project awards.
Working under the guidance of their teachers, with the assistance of technology teacher Will Burke, the students undertook research projects that investigated tidal energy, studied the effects that superabsorbent polymers have on farming soil moisture levels, tested filtration methods on properties of gray water, and proposed barrier designs to prevent storm surge penetration, among other topics. The district extends its congratulations to all of the students and their teachers on a job well done.

New friendships were celebrated at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District on the afternoon of June 15th, as students and teachers in the English as a New Language Buddy Reading Program gathered to mark the progress made during the first-year initiative. English language learners in different grades were chosen to
participate in the pilot program and buddy up with a designated mentor who is also a student at the school. Throughout the year, the buddies developed a bond as they met to read to each other, play games, and discuss life at home and school. Most importantly, the program enabled students to practice speaking, listening, reading and writing in English in a
risk-free environment. As a highlight of the yearend celebration, students and teachers read books that different buddy pairs had written and illustrated together. There were also a variety of game stations, as well as prizes and certificates given to both mentors and mentees. Bowling Green congratulates all of the students that participated and made new friends.

Athletes, authors, entertainers and explorers were among the famous individuals that could be found at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District on June 15th. The fifth grade hosted its annual living wax museum, and students dressed up as the people
they studied. It was the culminating activity in the biography writing unit. Students had to pick an accomplished person of the past or present, do research and write a comprehensive report. Each piece had to have a theme, such as a challenge or obstacle that the person overcame, and include quotes, pictures
and other text features. Fifth-graders created posterboard presentations with information on their famous individuals. Parents and other guests walked around the cafeteria and could tap a button to hear from the students, just like they would at a real wax museum.

Survivor Speaks Holocaust survivor Irving Roth, director of the Holocaust Resource Center at the Temple Judea in Manhasset, New York, encouraged sixth-graders at Shore Road School in Bellmore to take action when they see bullying and to retell his story to friends and family. “We teach history to learn from it,” Irving told the students. “Twenty years from now tell your children about me. Make sure it [the Holocaust]
doesn’t happen to anyone again.” Irving held the attention of each student during a one-hour assembly, first about being a boy in Czechoslovakia, and then about his experiences as a prisoner at Auschwitz and Buchenwald. He recounted his will to survive during the infamous “death march” and his joy at being liberated by the U.S. Army from Buchenwald in 1945. He also described the cattle cars taking Jews to
the concentration “death camps,” impossible work conditions, the anxiety of being separated from family and his rights of citizenship and his ability to go to school revoked by his country’s government. After the presentation, students were able to ask Irving questions, which included whether he was branded with a number, why he decided to come to America, and the fate of his parents and older brother.

The PTA donated the 35 flags, one for every class in the school.
