Lee Road Elementary School in the Levittown Public Schools was recently recognized as a 2019 National School of Character by Character.org for the school community’s dedicated focus on character development and its positive effect on academic achievement, student behavior and school climate. Lee Road is one of 88 schools to receive this high honor and will be officially recognized at the 2019 National Forum from Oct. 24-27 in Washington, DC. For a school to earn national distinction, one must follow the criteria set by Character.org which is based upon the 11 Principles of Character. Last year, Lee Road was recognized by Character. org as a 2018 New York State School of Character for its dedicated focus on character development. Since then, the school community has worked
hard to continue their mission of strengthening their positive school environment and even created a committee made up of staff members and parents to help. The rigorous application process was a complete team effort with building administrators, staff members, classroom teachers, PTA members, families and students playing a key role in showcasing how the school has implemented the Principles. Principles include creating a caring community and fostering self-motivation which the school has demonstrated through socialemotional assemblies, classroom lessons, school wide initiatives and supportive programs. Lee Road houses a staff-student mentoring program, the Get a Voice language-based anti-bullying program and Lee Road’s mindful schools program.
Students also participate in fundraisers throughout the year and staff members nominate R.I.S.E. students each month for their acts of kindness. R.I.S.E. stands for respect and responsibility, integrity, safety and staying healthy and empathy, and is an important part of Lee Road’s sister school, Jonas E. Salk Middle School who received the National School of Character distinction in 2016. The recognition connects both schools even more as students are bringing all that they learn at Lee Road to Jonas E. Salk Middle School when they graduate fifth grade. “I am beyond excited that Lee Road has earned this award,” said Principal Jami Anspach. “Everyone that is a part of the Lee Road community has contributed to earning this award.”
PSEG Employee Takes Challenge To The Next Level Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees, including Linda Zhang of Bethpage, recently participated in the Marie Kondo Challenge to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Led by the company’s volunteer group, ASPIRE— Asians & Pacific Islanders Reaching for Excellence, employees were challenged to clean out unneeded and unwanted items and clothing from their homes. The Lunar New Year spring cleaning is a tradition in some Asian cultures that symbolizes a fresh start to a prosperous new year. As a result of the challenge, two vanloads of clothing were donated
to LI Coalition for the Homeless. “This was a wonderful way to embrace the diversity of our employees, while supporting the community we serve,” said Zhang, PSEG Long Island’s ASPIRE president who organized the ativity. “Not only did our participants have fun doing their spring cleaning, but we were able to help those in our community meet some basic needs. All in all, it was a wonderful event that helped many people.” Marie Kondo is a Japanese author and consultant who is known globally for her unique “tidying up method” and
“spark joy” concept. PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through the company’s Community Partnership Program. Last year, PSEG Long Island employees logged 26,000 service hours volunteering at 1,145 fundraising and community events to support more than 400 organizations. School Earns National Distinction
TAKES CHALLENGE TO THE NEXT LEVEL - PSEG Long Island volunteer Linda Zhang of Bethpage helped to sort 20 bags of clothing donated by her and fellow PSEG Long Island employees to the LI Coalition for the Homeless. The donation was a result of company-wide participation in the Marie Kondo Challenge honoring the traditional Lunar New Year spring cleaning.
The track and field teams from East Meadow High School and W.T. Clarke High School ventured to Philadelphia, to compete at the legendary Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field. The W.T. Clarke High School boys’ 4x100 meter relay team, comprised of Alex Pereira, David Stewart, Sobin Ouseph and Jake Rosenthal, ran a season best time of 45.54 during their race heat. East Meadow High School students Chris Martinez,
David Romaldo, Alan Gonzalez and John Meah ran the fifth fastest 4x400 meter relay time in the school’s history and earned third place in the event with a time of 3:35.21. The 4x100 meter relay team from East Meadow High School set a season best finish of 45.20 as James Wagnac, David Romaldo, Sam Nkrumah and Brandon Love earned second place in their heat and 26th place overall. Seniors Isabel Marsh, Rachel Rose, Katherine Marsh and Madison Sohl raced to a season-best time
of 9:45.71 during the 4x800 meter relay and earned 10th place in the event for the East Meadow High School girls’ track and field team. Two other East Meadow High School girls relay teams competed in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter runs and showcased the future of the program, as six of the eight legs were run by underclassmen. The East Meadow School District congratulates these student-athletes on their success and wishes them good luck on the rest of the season.

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater
income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. Students from across Nassau County demonstrated a full spectrum of talent and skill at a horse show held last month. Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, where these teen equestrians study Horse Science and Management, held its annual Horse Science Show at the Riding Center at Long Island University’s (LIU) C.W. Post Campus. Seven students took first place in a variety of categories: Janina Jean from the Westbury UFSD took the top spot for Class 7-Walk/Two Point/ Question and Class 8-Walk/ Trot (no diagonals); Jacob Knigin from the BellmoreMerrick CHSD placed fist in Class 4-Cross Rails; Rachel Greenfield from East Williston UFSD came in first in Class 3-Walk/Trot/Canter (no leads); Melanie Matousek from the Levittown UFSD earned the top spot for Class 5-Walk/Trot/Canter (one at a time); Isabella Palfi from the Massapequa UFSD took first for Class 1-Walk/Trot/ Canter; John Paolillo from the North Shore CSD took first in Class 6-Walk/Trot; and Hannah Ramsey from the Wantagh UFSD won the top spot for Class 2-2” Jump Course. For the 22nd year, Levittown Community Council will host what has become a Levittown tradition – its Lazy Days of Summer picnic at the East Village Green. The event will ben taking place on Saturday, July 13. The day is a no-cost event with pony rides, a petting zoo, activities throughout the day, games and entertainment at one of Levittown’s beautiful village green areas. All are welcome to attend and enjoy the fun-filled, relaxing day. The event has been free to the community for its duration and is made possible by
Levittown Community Council members’ dues and the support of local business and residents’ sponsorships. Volunteers are sorely needed to help at the event. Set-up begins at 9:30 AM and the event begins at 11 and runs through 4 PM after which help is needed with taking down. A Gallery Full Of Talent The East Meadow School District opened the doors of the Leon J. Campo Center for the district art show. Nearly 1,300 pieces showcased the artistic talents of students at the district’s elementary and secondary schools. The first day featured an opening reception for
students, parents and community members, while the second day featured an open exhibit, whereby passersby were provided an additional opportunity to view the many projects. Artwork was presented in a range of mediums including photography, sculpture,
drawing, painting, architecture and graphic design. “Our student artwork is awe-inspiring,” said Director of Music and Art Dr. Christopher Hale. “Thank you to all who came out to support student creativity in our district.”
Students Stuff Buses The East Meadow School District’s Woodland Middle School’s third annual Stuff a Bus effort provided another successful set of donations to the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. The Stuff a Bus fundraiser is organized and spearheaded by many of Woodland’s student and service groups, including the National Junior Honor Society. The school held a drive for cleaning supplies, disposable products, pantry items and many nonperishable items to benefit the
Ronald McDonald House. Throughout the year, the clubs held fundraisers to help collect the necessities or to raise funds to purchase the products. Parents, faculty and community members also contributed by dropping off goods in the collection bin or by making a monetary donation. On the morning of May 31, students filled three buses that graciously donated by the Guardian Bus Company. A human chain from the second floor of the building through the main entrance helped to
move the collected items into the buses. Once all of the buses were filled, students and staff filled a fourth bus to transport the collected goods along with a $1,000 donation to the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park for unloading. “You should all be very proud of the effort that helped to make this year’s Stuff a Bus another success,” Assistant Principal Patricia Graham said to the volunteering students. “Thank you to everyone in the community for their support.”

Turning History Into Excellence A team of East Meadow High School seniors has been named winner of the Presidential History Award, sponsored by the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. The students achieved this distinction as a result of their participation in the National History Day Competition, held on March 31 at Hofstra
University. Suha Chaudhury, Celeste Costa, Ava Giorgio and Ayesha Rehman submitted a website project that analyzed the triumph and tragedy of the Jonestown Massacre. The group members were presented with certificates to acknowledge their accomplishment. All four

Two cello players from General Douglas MacArthur High School recently received awards from the Long Island String Festival Association. Junior Valerie Thomas earned the the Memorial Award and freshman Eunice Lee received the Studio Award based on their participation at
the LISFA Festival this past November, and their dedication and perseverance in the study of their instrumental performance on cello. Both student-musicians were selected from many Nassau County LISFA participants to receive their distinctions. Thomas and Lee are current
members of the MacArthur High School Symphony Orchestra and both have received perfect New York State School Music Association scores for the second year in a row. The district congratulates the students on their outstanding achievements.

Chatterton School in Merrick recently hosted a day for the arts, as the annual spring concert was held in conjunction with the schoolwide art show. Teachers Jennifer DiGangi, Marcia Miller and Dr. Richard Nasto directed the band, orchestra and choral students, respectively, during two concert performances, one in the daytime for students and an evening show for
parents. Immediately following the daytime concert, Chatterton classes were welcomed into the school’s all-purpose room for the art show, organized and curated by art teacher Justine Dujardin. This year’s theme celebrated “Star Wars,” with sixthgrade Art Club members collaborating on giant sculptures of popular “Star Wars” characters

Minars Named National Merit Winner Samantha Minars, a Wantagh High School senior, was named a $2,500 scholarship winner in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Samantha was chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists from each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments. Skills and potential for success in their future college/university studies. As a finalist, Samantha
was selected through a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors based on her academic record, the level of difficulty of courses studied and grades earned, scores from two standardized tests, contributions and leadership in school and the community, a finalist essay and a high school official recommendation. Samantha is valedictorian of the Class of 2019, an Advanced
Placement Scholar with Honor and the recipient of the Oberlin College Book Award for excellence in science. She is also treasurer of the National Honor Society and a member of both the World Language and Science honor societies. In addition to playing varsity tennis and badminton, Samantha participates in extracurricular activities as treasurer of the Science Olympiad team, a peer leader and member of the

She is also a counselor with Camp Achieve during the summer and assists with her family’s annual Haunted House Charity project to benefit the International Red Cross and UNICEF. Because I Said I Would Four-time Tedx speaker and internet sensation Alex Sheen spoke to ninth and 10th grade students at Wantagh High School about the importance of a promise and commitment during an assembly on May 10. Sheen, who is the founder of because I said I would, asked the students to commit to the social media movement of keeping promises and committing to causes, thus making their names mean something. “Promises can be lonely,” Sheen told the students. “But by joining the movement, you will become a stronger version of yourselves.”
Prompted by the loss of his father in 2012, Sheen began sending promise cards to people who asked for them. His movement has since sent more than 10.3 million promise cards to more than 150 countries, and his promises for the betterment of humanity have been shared virally around the world. One of his promises came in the form of a 245-mile walk across the state of Ohio in 10 days to fulfill a promise to visit three Cleveland women held captive for a decade. He also drove through the night to fulfill a promise to deliver disaster aid to Superstorm
Sandy victims here on Long Island and in New Jersey. Sheen did not ask the students to make a large promise like some of those he himself fulfilled, but to “do what you can with what you have” and to help those in need. After handing out promise cards to the students, Sheen told the students that “we are just one click away from changing the world.” After the assembly, students hung promise cards on the wall in the high school’s lobby, committing to make changes and to help those in need.

Tappeto named Academic All-American Lacrosse Player
Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Sanford H. Calhoun High School senior Sarah Tappeto was recently honored at the Nassau County Girls Lacrosse Association’s annual dinner as a U.S. Lacrosse Academic All-American. In order to be considered for such an award, the athlete must maintain
a 3.7. GPA during their high school career and have left their mark beyond the lacrosse field and classroom by making service contributions to the community. Tappeto was one of nine athletes in the county who received this honor. Aside from her work in the classroom, Tappeto led the team in goals this season
and has amassed more than 100 points in her varsity career. In addition to her honor as a U.S. Lacrosse Academic AllAmerican, she was an AllCounty honorable mention recipient and Calhoun’s Scholar Athlete for this season. She will attend Molloy College on a soccer scholarship this fall.
