n celebration of the 236th anniversary of Flag Day, the entire student body and staff at Bellmore’s Shore Road School created a living flag. Dressed in either red, white or blue, the students and staff lined up in the shape of the American flag on the school field and sang The Star Spangled Banner. They also shared facts about the American flag, including when and how the flag should be displayed, as well as the proper way to dispose of a ripped flag.

On Monday, July 8th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its third annual Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club on 483 West Main St., in Huntington. The price is $2,000 for a foursome. That includes brunch, a round of golf, cocktail hour and dinner. For dinner only (no golf), the cost is $175 per person. All proceeds from the event will go towards ADRC and The Mickey & Felice Neuwirth Care Center. The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chairs the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Last year, the event successfully raised over $127,000 towards Alzheimer’s research and treatment. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a brunch at 10 a.m. At noon, there will be a barbeque lunch and shotgun start. The cocktail reception will start at 5 p.m., followed by a dinner, a program, trophies and raffles. Golfers will also have the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge

W.T. Clarke High School students gathered together on June 4th in the high school’s Little Theater for the school’s sixth annual Science Research Symposium. With unique and informative presentations displayed across tables, guests were able to appreciate the effort that students have put into their scientific research. Following a congratulatory introduction from Math and Science Chairperson Terry Renna, the students welcomed guest speaker and Stony Brook University graduate student Shruti Kanakia, who inspired the student-
researchers as she carefully explained her research on nano- and supramolecular biosystems. The work of four W.T. Clarke seniors was then honored, as they were given the opportunity to present their research projects to the audience. Matthew Schwartz, who will be attending the Florida Institute of Technology in the fall, presented “The Analysis of the Green Macro Alga ‘Codium Fragile’ as an Alternative Habitat for Juvenile Atlantic Bay Scallops,” followed by Harvard-bound Daniel Wang’s “Insights Into AllAtom Protein Structure
Prediction Via ‘In Silico’ Simulations.” After a short intermission in which poster board presentations were displayed, Alex Evangelatos presented his research topic, “Novel Programming of Microcontrollers for Prevention of Automobile Collisions Caused by Wrong-Way Drivers.” To conclude the presentations, Bryon Koff discussed his work, “Inhibition of CDK4 Induces G1 Arrest, But Not Senescence in DD8313 Liposarcoma Cells.” The evening culminated with the presentation of awards for achievements in science.

Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I remember the moment like it was yesterday. Among the sea of caps and gowns, over the illustrious strains of Pomp & Circumstance… there he was, James Gandolfini, sitting one row behind my family at my college graduation. I could hear the buzz building behind me, as people started to notice. Why is he here? Is he speaking? Does he know someone who’s graduating? The fact that a celebrity was sitting among us was clearly the highlight for the thousand or so graduates on that day, some nine years ago, on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. I remember being very aware of his presence, as every time I glanced over my shoulder at my own little cheering section… there he was. When I walked up to receive my “unofficial” diploma (the real
one would arrive several weeks later), I carried a small index card with my name written on it to hand to the Dean. “Jamie Lynn Ryan” they announced. As I looked up at the sea of faces, my eye once again fell on Mr. Tony Soprano himself, only this time, he was looking right back at me. And with a big grin and a wink, he began applauding. I couldn’t believe it. I found myself glancing over both shoulders to see if the acknowledgement was meant for someone else, but there was no one there. As I walked back to my seat with a giant, silly smile on my face, I began quietly counting down the seconds until I could run and tell my family what had just happened. He smiled at me. He winked. He clapped. For me. What a doll. Following the ceremony, we all realized that he was indeed there for someone, his own niece, who we had apparently been attending school with for the last four years.
Who knew! And once I was able to meet up with my family, my brother revealed that he had gotten to the graduation tent a little early to reserve a row of seats, only to find Mr. Gandolfini sitting there already. Reluctant to disturb him at that point, they exchanged a slight greeting. Now, as the crowd began to disperse, people began tentatively approaching him to shake hands, ask for an autograph, maybe a photo… Me, I didn’t want to bother him. Ironically, that very occasion came up this past Father’s Day, as my brother and I reminisced over how we should have stopped to talk to him… and then came the tragic news just three days later. What a shame. I didn’t have the honor of truly knowing Mr. Gandolfini, but his presence surely touched me on one of the most memorable days of my life. May he Rest In Peace.

Family and Children’s Association, Hempstead Boys and Girls Club, and Hispanic Counseling Center have joined forces to create a combined, enriched summer day camp that unites staff, resources, and expertise in order to provide opportunities for children and youth to achieve their highest potential bridge and avoid the summer learning gap. The program, known as Hempstead Out of School Time Alliance or “HOSTA,” will be conducted at the Hagedorn Family Resource Center located at 120 Greenwich Street in Hempstead and is suitable for ages 5 through 15. HOSTA will provide a superior quality summer program experience at a low cost with extended morning and evening hours to accommodate working parents. Program hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Extended care hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The program begins July 8th and runs until August 23rd. Young people can select from several clubs that will include a variety of activities, so that boredom is never an issue. The clubs consist of Dance (African, Latin, and Hip hop), Sports, Technology (photography, Claymation, movie making), Art (drawing, painting, sculpture making), and Theatre (performing arts, improvisation). In addition to the choice of clubs, participants will also be involved in core curriculum activities, which are comprised of; science, math, gym, social studies, social recreation, and creative writing. Summer fun will also include weekly swimming sessions, field trips, breakfast, lunch and nutritious snacks. Please visit one of

Celebrating Four Years It was a night of celebration as 91 Levittown MacArthur High School seniors were recognized for their outstanding achievements during the annual Senior Awards Night in the school auditorium. This cherished tradition recognizes the students’ overall accomplishments during high school. During the
ceremony, the students received approximately $32,000 in scholarship money from local community businesses and organizations and special senior honors from government officials. Principal Kathleen Valentino congratulated the students on four years of dedication to success and sacrifice and the
parents and educators for their commitment to education. “You have made all of us proud,” she told the students. “Thank you for the mark you have made on MacArthur High School.” The district would like to congratulate the students on their accomplishments and wishes them much success in the future.
Award Winners The 2012-2013 school year at Division Avenue High School culminated in the traditional Senior Awards Night to honor the school’s top seniors. During the evening of accolades, 108 of the school’s top seniors received awards and scholarships totaling $51,000, while parents and members of the community watched with pride. Principal Dr. Francesco
Ianni addressed the seniors, who sat on the auditorium stage. “You demonstrated that failure is not an option,” he said. “Your hard work and dedication is truly an inspiration to all of us.” During the ceremony, staff and curriculum associates handed out department awards and special senior honors, while members of various community organizations
honored the students with certificates and scholarships. Valedictorian James Reilly and salutatorian Sukhneet Sahota were also officially acknowledged. The Levittown School District congratulates the seniors on their accomplishments and wishes them much success in the future.

Following 25 years in the Bellmore School District, Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center Principal Clifford Molinelli is ready to hang up his keys to the school and enter into retirement. Before he can do that, the students and staff organized a surprise assembly program to toast and congratulate the man who has led the school for the past five years. During the 45-minute ceremony, Mr. Molinelli was presented with a scrapbook of memories featuring a page from every class. Each class also shared their favorite
“Molinelli Moment,” including “dressing up funny for PARP,” his “really loud laugh” and his habit of “reading books to them.” “We love you and thank you for all that you do,” said first-grade teacher Lauren Giordano, who helped organize the event. “You will be missed, but never forgotten.” The assembly continued with a slideshow that included Molinelli’s baby and family photos as well as photos documenting his professional career. Diane Kalish, Mr. Molinelli’s secretary, presented him with candy and gift cards
for the movies, bookstores and home improvement stores, to prepare him for retired life. To conclude the program, the PTA presented Mr. Molinelli with a gold star to document his years as a Reinhard Rising Star, and the students sang a special song to the tune of the “Mickey Mouse Club March.” Moved by the presentation, Mr. Molinelli thanked everyone for the program, saying, “The one thing I will miss most is all of your faces.”
In celebration of the 236th anniversary of Flag Day, the entire student body and staff at Bellmore’s Shore Road School created a living flag. Dressed in either red, white or blue, the students and staff lined up in the shape of the American flag on the school field and sang “The
Star Spangled Banner.” They also shared facts about the American flag, including when and how the flag should be displayed as well as the proper way to dispose of a ripped flag. “Throughout the school year, students have studied the history of the United States in their social
studies curriculum,” said music teacher Laura Laude, who organized the living flag event. “In their music classes, they even learned about the events that led to the writing of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ by Francis Scott Key on the evening of Sept. 13, 1814.”

The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk, sponsored by East End Cardiology was held on Sunday, May 20th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. Despite the poor weather, more than 900 runners, walkers and spectators came out to participate in the much anticipated event. Following the race, event emcee, Rich Hoffman, News 12 Meteorologist, presented to the top male and female runners along
with the top runners in various age categories. Those in attendance were then treated to music by Rum Hill Rockers and Out East. A health expo was also available during the event and was open to all participants. The event raised over $80,000. Special thanks to all the donors, participants and volunteers, especially East End Cardiology, NJROTC and the Tortorella Group for supporting the American Heart Association and helping with all the day of event logistics. The Healing Heart 5K
hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. Continuing Efforts To Aid Even eight months after Super Storm Sandy tore through Long Island, storm ravaged communities, such as Long Beach, are still in need of assistance. Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, has continuously driven efforts to aid disaster relief in these areas. Thanks to a generous donation from the Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Island Harvest was able to hold a supermarket gift card distribution to aid people in Long Beach still struggling from the storms aftermath. Over 300 people lined up on the sidewalks of Long Beach at last Monday’s gift card distribution. Of those who attended, 250 received gift cards while the next 120 received a disaster recovery food box, which provided a four person family with four days worth of food.

There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to

Summer Workshops Set Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), the nationally renowned summer arts day camp, has long presented unique summer workshops on the latest techniques for arts educators. This summer, Usdan will present “Finale: A Vibrant Tool For Today’s Music Educators.” The workshops will take place from July 8th-11th (Monday to Thursday) and again from July 15th-18th. Hours are 9 a.m. to 12 noon daily at the Center’s 200acre Long Island campus in Wheatley Heights (Town of Huntington.) Usdan’s workshops will be taught by certified Finale clinician David Dolgon, and they will cover the notation and composition program that is the industry standard in music notation software, enabling composers, arrangers, musicians, teachers, students and publishers to create, edit, audition, print and publish musical scores. Usdan Center, which has introduced the arts, nature and ecology, and
chess to more than 60,000 students ages 6 to 18 in its 46- year history, presented the first New York Statewide Music Educator Technology Conference on Long Island. Other workshops have covered “Differentiated Instruction and Rubrics” and “Choral Conducting: Connecting Music and Literacy,” taught by distinguished vocal music educators. The Center has offered dance workshops, including “Vibrant Curricula and Ballet Technique for Jazz Dance Teachers” taught by Usdan’s Dance Chair and former Joffrey Ballet School head, Maurice Brandon Curry. Usdan also originated Long Island’s first Canadian Brass summer workshops, hosting two years of 3-day programs attended by music educators from across the country. Topics to be covered during this summer’s workshop include the use of Finale for music notation entry, techniques for producing score and parts, the use of Finale in creating

Moving Up Celebration
Eighth-grade students at Wisdom Lane Middle School in the Levittown School District proceeded down the aisles of the auditorium in ceremonial tradition during the school’s annual moving-up ceremony. Their procession was accompanied by the sixth- and seventh-grade band playing Pomp and Circumstance, under the direction of Lori Katcher. Eighth-grade class officer Danielle McDuffie led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the eighth-grade chorus singing the national anthem. In his opening remarks, Principal John Avena reflected on a school year that was anything but normal, made more challenging by bad weather conditions and new educational objectives. “The norm was not the normal,” he said. “But this class has demonstrated resilience and fortitude and has discovered that going with the flow was a
better option than failure to succeed.” Board of Education President Michael Pappas encouraged the students to become actively involved in high school and to form high school memories. Using Christopher Columbus as a comparison, Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes prompted the graduates to have no fear of exploring the unknown. Division Avenue High School Principal Dr. Francesco Ianni explained that the moving-up ceremony was opening the doors to high school and college, and that each student should put their best foot forward in accomplishing tasks and goals. Student Council President James Reilly helped to alleviate the graduates’ fears about attending high school by telling them that there would be a peer leader assigned to help each student acclimate to their
new surroundings.. Wisdom Lane Middle School eighth-grade class officer Nicholas Weinert spoke about his memories and said that he is looking forward to making new ones. Following his speech was the presentation of the class gift, monetary donations and gift cards for the school’s food pantry by eighth-grade class officers Jennifer Daly and Camille Martinez. The students were then called one by one to receive their certificates and shake hands with the staff, members of the Board of Education, administrators and guest speakers. After a very special string quartet performance of You Raise Me Up, with Dawn Kim and teacher David Pra on violin, Regina Shin on viola and Subin Heo on cello, the graduates proceeded through the auditorium and joined their families for refreshments in the cafeteria.
On June 18th, Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla was on hand at the Woodbury Country Club for the BellmoreMerrick United Secondary Teachers (B.M.U.S.T.) 31st Annual Awards Dinner and Dance. He presented Town of Hempstead “Office of the Town Clerk” Citations to Maryellen Carney Mepham High School,
Michael Dolber - Merrick Avenue Middle School, Ellen Johanson - Calhoun High School, Janet Johnson - Baldwin’s Grand Avenue Middle School, Philip Katz - Mepham High School and Michael Muscara - Mepham High School the B.M.U.S.T. newly retired members to recognize all of their years of service and dedication. Mr. Bonilla also presented
a Town of Hempstead “Office of the Town Clerk” Citation to Peter Brideson the B.M.U.S.T. President’s Choice Honoree from Baldwin’s Grand Avenue Middle School. Retirees Jeanne Marolf and Kevin McElroy from Mepham High School were not present at the time of the photo.
Onward & Upward
The members of the eighth-grade graduating class at Levittown’s Jonas E. Salk Middle School proceeded down the aisles of the school’s gymnasium in ceremonial moving-up tradition as proud parents and family members watched from the bleachers. Class officers led the salute to the flag, after which the eighthgrade chorus, conducted by Lisa Levenberg, sang the national anthem. In his opening remarks, Principal John Zampaglione told the graduates that they had clearly risen above what was expected from them during their middle school tenure. “Your desire, maturity and compassion to help others were your most impressive achievements,” he stated. MacArthur High School Principal Kathleen Valentino also welcomed the Class of 2017 and explained that there will
always be staff and peer leaders to help the students acclimate to high school. In addition, Board of Education President Michael Pappas remarked that it will be the events and club activities of their school years that will be most remembered during adulthood, and advised the students to become involved in the high school. Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes then encouraged the freshmen-to-be to follow the steps of Christopher Columbus, a man who had no fear to explore and discover the unknown. During the ceremony, the administration and staff bestowed a number of special awards in the areas of educational excellence, character and citizenship. To the delight of the graduates, student Ted Fiber, guitar teacher Dave Insana and music teacher Lisa Levenberg treated the audience to a rendition of “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow.” After the ceremony, parents and students were invited for refreshments in the school cafeteria, where the students congratulated their friends on becoming high schoolers.
HIGHEST RANK - Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos congratulated Eagle Scout Christopher Somella of East Meadow for achieving the highest rank in scouting. For his Eagle project, Christopher constructed five bat houses at Veterans Memorial Park to help to control the mosquito population in the area. Ms. New York Senior America and resides in Bellerose, Queens with her husband. She grew up on Long Island and graduated from Mineola High School and employed as an office manager for various industries, including import/export and the garment industry. Queen Virginia has varied interests - vintage cars (drives a 1966 Mustang); sailing, and interest in model trains. In 1980 she began studying Middle Eastern dance, performing and teaching since 1982. With Serena Wilson Dance Theatre, Anahid Sofian Dance Co. and Matteo Vittucci’s Castanets In Concerts,
her appearances included Lincoln Center, Town Hall, Cleveland Museum of Art, Alice Tully Hall, The American Museum Of Natural History and The Metropolitan Museum Of Art. Queen Virginia’s talent portion performed at the pageant was a Saber Dance. As the 2013 Ms. NY Senior America Queen, Virgina looks forward to meeting new people, promoting the Senior America organization and performing in their cameo showcases. Outgoing Queen Donna Dean spoke of the highlights she experienced as the 2012 Queen.
“Tomorrow’s Leaders.” The pageant program is based on inner beauty, as well as poise and presentation, and offers an “All-American spirit of fun for family and friends.” Emphasis is placed on the importance of gaining self-confidence, learning new skills, learning good attitudes about competition and setting and achieving personal goals. The pageant seeks to recognize the accomplishments of each girl while encouraging her to set goals for the future. Miss Martinez’s activities include gymnastics and cheerleading. She also enjoys drawing and coloring and play with her two sisters and brother. Alexa’s sponsors include Applebee’s, BKGL and uncles.

The Nassau County Council of School Superintendents honored the 2013 valedictorians and salutatorians from every high school in the county when it hosted its annual Celebrating Excellence Breakfast in the grand ballroom of the Crest Hollow Country Club. “As you go out to conquer the world, and you will, remember to first conquer yourself,” was the sage advice from Celebrating Excellence Committee Chairman and Freeport Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham in his address to the students. Fifty-four tables comprised of Nassau County’s top students,
proud parents and administrators paid tribute to this group of extraordinary graduating seniors as they were called to the stage to receive their certificates of honor. The destination college or university for each honoree was also announced. This impressive list included Ivy League schools, the best colleges on Long Island, and other elite schools across the country. “How will you use your gifts? Will inertia be your guide or will you follow your passion?” prodded keynote speaker Theresa A. Regnante, president and CEO of the United Way of Long Island. “My hope is that you all come back to Long Island to share
with us your stories and talents.” “These fine young men and women are to be saluted for their hard work and their commitment to excellence,” said NCCSS President-elect and North Merrick Superintendent of Schools David S. Feller in his praise of the hard work and dedication of these outstanding students. “We’re all confident that you will achieve great things in life.” After the breakfast concluded, the students headed back to continue the final days of their high school careers, while counting the days to their graduations and next academic endeavors.
ALL FAITH AWARD - Lathan Lev received the All Faith Award and medal at the Boy Scout Troop 189 Court of Honor at Temple B’nai Torah, Wantagh on June 13th. Hofstra University’s Mack Sports Complex was a sea of blue caps and gowns as 359 graduates from the Class of 2013 celebrated a long-awaited milestone in their educational careers during Levittown MacArthur High School’s 52nd Annual Commencement exercises. As June comes to a close, thousands of Long Island’s students will be flocking to the beaches instead of to the classrooms. The end of June customarily signifies the end of the school year. With the end of the school year comes herds of teens with nothing scheduled to do all day. These newly freed kids will go to the beach in search of a little relaxation to unwind from yet another stressful school year. As the last bell of the year tolls, many local high schoolers will beeline straight for Long Island’s coast. After my final test, the Chemistry Regents, my friends and
I hopped on the ferry to Ocean Beach and spent some time enjoying the sand, the sun and the surf. It was nice just to forget about studying, about stress, and about doing our homework. The realization that we had just begun our three month relaxation period had finally started to set in. While playing in the water with my closest friends, we felt happy to be done with school. The pressure put on children from school magically disappears as you leave the classroom for the last time for almost 100 days. On that final day, the only worry one feels is whether or not they have a ride to
the beach. Here on Long Island, the beach is a Mecca for teens. With no worries about school, we are free to enjoy our downtime and finally let loose. As my friends and I exemplified, the primary goal of June - September shouldn’t rest upon education; it should rest upon relaxation. The precious little time you have to unwind is important to students. Everyone needs some time to just “shut your brain off” and get into the “summer mindset.” The end of the school year is a time that enables teens to have fun, relax and hang out with friends.
