Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Virtual Town Hall: Pedestrian Safety on Long Island

All Three Merrick Schools Receive No Place For Hate Designation Congratulations to Birch, Chatterton and Levy Lakeside schools in the Merrick School District. Each building has officially been named a “No Place for Hate” school by the Anti-Defamation League. “We truly appreciate your school’s commitment to creating a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students,” wrote the ADL Education team in an email sent to each school. “Without you, No Place For Hate would not be possible. Thank you.” Birch, Chatterton and

Lakeside are among the 1,800 schools nationwide to earn the coveted distinction in the 20192020 school year by completing activities that teach acceptance of all people. Levy Lakeside School kicked off the program with a pep rally in the fall. Students also assessed their similarities and differences, then created individual faces with statements completing the sentence, “It is okay to be _____.” Birch School’s Student Council representatives partnered with

classroom teachers to lead discussions about respect and kindness. Students also contributed “feathers” to create a colorful, sprawling mural of a bird as a reminder of everyone’s soaring commitment to respect one another. Chatterton School students created a colorful Tree of Respect. Each student was given a leaf made from construction paper to write one idea that shows respect to others. As part of the activity, every class read the book, “All Are Welcome,” and also held discussions about kindness vs. respect. Additionally, every student at all three schools signed a special No Place for Hate pledge that they will treat people fairly, be kind to others even if they are not like them and tell a teacher if they see someone being hurt or bullied.

Athena Silver, a ninth grader at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, created a comforting outlet during the COIVD-19 pandemic— baking. With all the time at home, she learned how to perfect areas of baking and learned new techniques to help strengthen her baking abilities and Baked by Athena was born. “She has been surprising friends and family with all of her baked goods for a while now,” explained

I felt bad that they didn’t get the end they were expecting, and

‘Swing Into Summer’ as Hempstead Town Prepares to Re-Open Pools July 3rd Supervisor Don Clavin invited residents to “swing into summer” as he announced the re-opening of Town of Hempstead playgrounds, which was effective Saturday June 13th – in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Supervisor shared the good news at Newbridge Road Park playground in Bellmore, joined by Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Councilman Tom Muscarella, Councilman Christopher Carini, Town Clerk Kate Murray, Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll and a group of neighborhood children who enjoyed the first playground slides of the summer season. Supervisor Clavin also reported that Town of Hempstead pools will re-open on July 3rd, just in time for our nation’s

independence celebration. The decision on whether or not to re-open playgrounds and pools was recently given to local municipalities by New York State, and town officials maintain that all facilities will operate in accordance with the governor’s public health directives, including enhanced sanitizing of equipment and social distancing reminders. Indeed, the town safely and successfully opened town beaches following state guidelines, and will implement similar policies and safeguards for playgrounds and pools. “The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our social interaction, recreational activities and entire way of life, particularly for our community’s youth,” stated Supervisor Clavin. “We want people to be safe, but we also understand the need for our young people to get out of the house and

restore some normalcy in their lives. We encourage all our residents to come celebrate summer in America’s largest township at one of our many playgrounds and pools.” The Town of Hempstead is home to 120 municipal playgrounds and over 20 pools. A listing of playgrounds can be found on the town website at hempsteadtownny. gov/facilities/parks, while pools can be viewed at hempsteadtownny.gov/facilities/beaches-and-pools/ outdoor-pools. “By working together and being responsible, we can all enjoy Town of Hempstead playgrounds and pools while protecting one another,” concluded Supervisor Clavin. “We are confident that we can continue to provide the great summer experience that our residents have come to enjoy in America’s largest township.”

This Refresh, Revive and Thrive program will be available for a four-week period beginning on July 20 to help students prepare for the upcoming school year, by subject area/grade level. “As we worked diligently to improve our distance learning practices, we have also utilized

opportunities to identify key skills, concepts, and content across the various disciplines and multiple levels that need to be reinforced once school reopens next September,” explained Superintendent John DeTommaso. Classes are available to all students and offer the opportunity to help retain key skills, relearn important concepts and dive deeper into curriculum. “Refresher courses

will be offered both synchronously (live) and asynchronously (recorded/ posted) to all students and will be meaningful, engaging, and serve as great preparation for the 2020-21 academic school year,” added DeTommaso.
