Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and members of the Town Board honored an outstanding group of Eagle Scouts and Gold Award recipients during a ceremony held at the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick on Saturday, June 13th. The Town of Hempstead is home to more than 150 Eagle Scout and Girl Scout Gold Award recipients, which were invited to the 10th Annual Scout Recognition ceremony. Murray presented each Scout in attendance with official town certificates and special patches to commemorate their rise to the highest levels in Scouting. “Today is the grand culmination of many years of hard work and service to the community on the behalf of our town’s Scouts,” Murray said. “Many of these youngsters, who began their Scouting journey as kindergarteners, are now preparing for college and beyond. I’m proud to honor these fine young men and women, who represent our society’s future leaders.” During the ceremony, Murray was joined by several Scout officials, including Girl Scouts of Nassau County CEO

Donna Ceravolo and Board President Wanda Jackson; and Theodore Roosevelt Council of the Boy Scouts of America Scout Executive Jay Garee and Volunteer President Steve Grosskopf. Baylee Kilfoil-Greaves, a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient from Roosevelt, spoke to the group about her project, which focused on working with local nursing homes to help senior citizens feel connected and happy by creating an art project entitled “Artists with Smiles.” Following the event, honorees and their guests were invited to tour the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, a special sanctuary for plant and wildlife, as well as a popular nature and recreational destination for residents. “The Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve is such a fantastic venue to honor the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, since protection of the environment has always been one of their most important missions,” Murray said. “I congratulate them on their outstanding achievement in reaching the premier levels of Eagle Scout and Gold Award.”

As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major

artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

various competitions this school year. Superintendent of Schools Louis R. DeAngelo, central administrators, Board of Education members, and faculty and staff from the middle and high schools were on hand to congratulate students on their achievements in art, athletics, business,

creative writing and poetry, journalism, PTA Reflections, and math and science. As their names were called in their respective categories, the students were officially recognized. The district congratulates these students on a successful school year.

Passing The Musical Torch First and second-grade students at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center took a sneak peak into their musical futures on June 8th as the select band and orchestra from Shore Road School helped introduced them to instruments for when they move on within the Bellmore School District to Winthrop Avenue School. At Winthrop Avenue, students can begin

orchestra (violins, violas, cello, bass) in third grade and participate in band (flute, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, drums), beginning in fourth-grade. The students are also introduced to the recorder in third-grade during music class. During their visit to Reinhard, the Shore Road orchestra performed songs including “Let it Go” and “For the First Time in

Forever” from the movie Frozen, and popular hits “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “My Girl.” The band followed with the theme to the movie “Indiana Jones” and a medley of “Another One Bites the Dust” and “We Will Rock You.” Each instrument was also featured on an individual basis to demonstrate its role in the group’s overall sound.

Hempstead Turnpike is the geographical divide that separates the Levittown School District into north and south, with Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools on opposite sides of the community. While a geographical divide may seem to encourage rivalry between district sports teams, history and community pride only fueled and encouraged members of the high schools’ varsity baseball teams to support each other as Division Avenue clinched the Nassau County Division A Championship and MacArthur took home the Nassau County Division AA Championship. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald said she is extremely proud of the way the two teams supported one another during the county playoffs. The two teams scrimmaged against each other every Friday afternoon to bolster their skills and stay sharp prior to games with opponents. “What was most

impressive was that after each county championship game, the players stood on the sidelines to cheer for the other team,” McDonald said. “That is what Levittown is all about, and those are the values we teach our students.” Keith Snyder, the district’s director of physical education, health and athletics, explained that the support of the other school’s team stems from the boys’ involvement with Little League sports and dates back to the postWorld War II era, when veterans developed the Levittown Little League program. Since then, baby boomers have adopted baseball values and the philosophy has perpetuated throughout the years. “Levittown became, and still is, a baseball town,” Snyder said. “There is a baseball-and-apple-pie attitude here. There is still a healthy competition between the two varsity teams, but they both bleed Levittown.” MacArthur High School baseball coach Steve Costello explained that

there are strong ties among the coaches, who disseminate the values of baseball and team support amongst the two teams. Both coaches Costello and Tom Tuttle, as well as Division Avenue High School assistant coach Ray Weidlein, are Levittown alumni. In addition, Costello and Tuttle played for baseball coach legend Doug Robins, whose values of sportsmanship still resonate today. “Being a part of the baseball program is like being a part of a family tree,” Tuttle said. “When you have been active with the Little League program, it creates an atmosphere of support on the high school teams.” Costello explained that since the two high school teams do not compete in the same division, there was sufficient time to attend each other’s games. “Most of these boys have known each other through Little League and through competition on other sports teams,” he said. “These are the bonds that keep us together.”

Who’s Your Hero? Tears of joy resonated through the cafeteria of Summit Lane Elementary School in Levittown as second graders in Christine Pace’s class honored a VIP in their lives during the annual hero celebration. The students collectively

sang songs to their guests and read a personalized letter about their hero’s most impressive qualities and why he or she is important to them. After reading their report at the podium, the students presented their heroes with

an elaborately designed booklet, which included photos pictured with their hero, the personalized letter and research. The event bought smiles to al, invited and reinforced the students’ technology, research and writing skills.

High Ratings Nine of Wantagh School District’s music ensembles participated in the New York State School Music Educators Association Major Organization Evaluation Festival at Hofstra University. Six of the ensembles received Gold ratings, with the high school wind ensemble receiving the highest rating of a Gold with Distinction. “The music department is extremely excited about the performance of all our musical ensembles, who under the direction of their conductors worked hard throughout the school year to attain their high ratings

on their performance skills,” said Kelly Good, supervisor of fine and performing arts. During the NYSSMA Major Organization Evaluation Festival, each ensemble is evaluated by a panel of judges, who write constructive comments and score in specific areas of performance. Each ensemble is then given a rating of either certificate of participation, bronze, silver, gold and gold with distinction. The music ensembles received the following ratings: • Wantagh High School wind ensemble – Gold

raising money for children and young people living in poverty by simply having fun and making people laugh. A donation was made to the sponsoring organization on behalf of

Senior Athletes Recognized East Meadow High School Class of 2015 senior athletes were honored for their successes both on and off the field at the school’s Senior Athletic Awards Night on June 9th. Golf Outing Raises Funds Supporters of South Nassau Communities Hospital raised a record gross total of $329,000 toward the expansion of the hospital’s Emergency Department at its 31st Annual Golf Outing, held Monday on two courses, breaking all previous fundraising records for this event by more than 16 percent. John D. Cameron, Jr., P.E., founder and managing partner of Cameron Engineering & Associates in Woodbury, NY, was the honoree of the outing, which was held at both the Inwood Country Club and The Seawane Club on Monday, June 15th. Aside from the recordsetting money raised, the outing will also

be remembered by Brightwater, NY, resident Tim Haggerty for the holein-one he recorded on the par 3 5th hole at The Seawane Club that won him a two-year lease on an Audi courtesy of Lynbrook Audi. This is the second consecutive year that South Nassau’s golf outing has been host to a hole-inone. The money raised by the outing will support South Nassau’s “Emergency Department Expansion Campaign.” The campaign is a five-year, $10 million fundraising initiative to help pay for a $60 million renovation of the Oceanside Emergency Department, serving all residents of the South Shore from Queens to Suffolk. The expansion

project will increase the Emergency Department’s square footage from 16,000 to 30,000 square feet, increasing its overall size by 87% and giving it the necessary room to accommodate a projected 70,000 patient visits each year as well as establishing dedicated areas for behavioral health and pediatric emergencies. The Emergency Department currently sees some 65,000 patients a year but was designed to handle 35,000 annually. “John Cameron has been a long-time friend of South Nassau and his firm has partnered with the hospital on several important projects,” said South Nassau’s president and CEO, Richard J. Murphy.

“We are grateful he agreed to be our honoree and help us raise funds for the Emergency Department expansion campaign.” Under Mr. Cameron’s leadership, Cameron Engineering has grown into being one of the region’s premier engineering and planning firms, having received local, state, and national awards for many of its projects. Cameron Engineering serves the public and private sectors alike in the New York Metropolitan area and beyond and has partnered with South Nassau on many of its major projects including the North Addition, Outpatient Dialysis Center rebuild, and most recently the Long Beach Urgent Care Center.

Mr. Cameron (a resident of Rockville Centre, NY) is a licensed professional engineer, marine engineer and a U.S. patent holder. His professional experience includes heavy construction, government, facility operations, consulting engineering, academia, entrepreneurship and business ownership. Mr. Cameron is also the recipient of many personal awards and has been a frequent contributor to the news media, including television, radio and print. He and his wife reside in Rockville Centre as do their two married children and grandchildren. In addition to the holein-one, the outing also presented awards for the

following categories: Men’s Lowest Score – Mike Ricciardi – 72 at The Seawane Club, and Lou D’Agostino – 78 at Inwood Country Club; Women’s Lowest Score – Jennifer Haggerty – 79 at The Seawane Club, and Kathy Masiulis – 89 at Inwood Country Club; Foursome Lowest Score – Wes Price, Jim Kelley, Steve Puckett, Matt Curtin – 57 at The Seawane Club, and Rick Kuplicki, Dan Kuplicki, Myles Foley, Max Gartman – 74 at Inwood Country Club. The afternoon of golf was followed by an evening of fine dining, camaraderie, and fun at the Seawane Club.
