Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to set up on the lawn to enjoy the evening’s festivities. Attendance and parking are free for Town of Hempstead residents. Please note: due to safety regulations being implemented for the

fireworks show, no one will be permitted to leave the park between 8:30 PM until after the fireworks have concluded and an “all-clear” has been communicated to the park. The Charity of the Month for June is

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm www.hobbsfarm.info

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers

can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and ﬁll out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to ﬁnd out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, the farm is in need of some repairs; they need a new roof on their barn, plumbing assistance and fountain repair. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. The farm would like to give a huge shout out and thanks to Parkline Asphalt for donating their time and skills to lay out a nice smooth roadway from their parking lot to their wheelchair garden for those in wheelchairs or unsteady on their feet!

STREET RENAMING - Supervisor Don Clavin and Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr. joined members of the Hatzelman family on Fifth Street in East Meadow to announce the renaming of the road in memory of Joseph Hatzelman, an FDNY firefighter who tragically died last year of a 9/11-related illness as a result of his heroic work at Ground Zero. Also attending were Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Town Clerk Kate Murray, Receiver Jeanine Driscoll, members of the FDNY Ceremonial Unit, representatives from the East Meadow and North Bellmore Fire Departments and local friends and neighbors. the heroes of September 11th, we are proud to rename Fifth Street in East Meadow as Firefighter Joseph A. Hatzelman Street.” Joseph, a lifelong resident of East Meadow, lived on Fifth Street for 30 years and was a firefighter with FDNY Engine Co. 218 in Bushwick, Brooklyn for just over 10 years. September 11, 2001 was Joseph’s day off. But, when the attacks took place, he drove directly to the Ground Zero site, where he remained for one month straight to assist in the rescue and recovery effort. “As a former United States Marine, I understand the call to service and dedication to helping others … qualities that were exhibited by Firefighter Joseph Hatzelman as he put his own health and safety on the line to rescue others on September 11th,” added Councilman Dunne. “I am honored to join with Supervisor Clavin and the Hatzelman family to honor the memory of Joseph by renaming his home street

so that future generations can know the sacrifices he made in service of our nation.” Joseph’s family owned Meadow Dairy in East Meadow for many years. He has multiple family members in the North Bellmore and East Meadow Fire Departments, and a nephew in the Nassau County Police Department. “Joe was born and raised in East Meadow and chose to settle down here once he started a family of his own,” said Joseph’s son, Joseph Hatzelman. “He immersed himself in the FDNY community and gave everything he had. He was loved by all and he continues to protect those he cares about.” The Town of Hempstead thanks the FDNY Ceremonial Unit, the North Bellmore and East Meadow Fire Departments for providing a patriotic American flag arch, the Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums, and Rev. Robert A. Holz of St. Raphael Parish in East Meadow for offering an inspirational prayer.

The Fourth of July is Near, Read About it Here!

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. “Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain. Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a

year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the

formation of the United States of America. A total of 56 delegates signed the document. Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures. Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776. We hope everyone enjoys the Fourth of July. Let us embrace our country’s history, enjoy our freedoms and unite over the love of our country.

get back out on the field and prove what we could have done last year if it weren’t for the pandemic,” explained coach Mallory Freely. Losing to Freeport, 6-5 in triple overtime their first match up this season, the Cougars were determined to make a comeback.

“We defeated them the second time, 13-5, to seal the deal and claim the title,” Freely added. “We finished with a record of 12-1 for conference V. This is the first year that we have every attacker on the score board and it was the entire team effort for all of our success.”

Marilyn E. Brooks, 92, Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother Mrs. Brooks passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 2nd. Mrs. Brooks was born at home in Bellmore, N.Y. in 1928, the daughter of Harry J. Blank and Helen (Berry) Blank and sister of the late Harry Blank Jr, and Robert Blank. Calhoun Girls Track And Field Nab Fourth Straight Conference Title This year’s sports seasons were anything but normal, and spring track and field for the girls team at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central School District was no exception. Shortened season, less meets, less time to train and lots of protocols, however, these players had a goal to win their fourth straight conference championship and nothing was going to stand in their way. The girls extended their current streak to 64 consecutive wins and captured another Conference Championship for their fourth in a row. The team will compete in the Division Championships at Calhoun on June 1 looking for their fifth straight division title. The girls headed into

this spring season holding the longest winning streak on Long Island for girls track and field. The girls started their season like they have in the past — cruising through their first three meets and racking up a 7-0 record on the season, then they really hit their stride and went on to win the next six to finish another season with a perfect 13-0 record. Track is broken up into a few different components: sprints, mid-distance, long distance and field events. Captains Faith Dwyer, a senior, and Julianna Razza, a junior, would continue to lead the team in all distance events and sometimes even a sprint or two. Each week they ran two or three events usually the 800m, 1500m, 3000m and even the occasionally 400m hurdles.

“It really speaks to their character and commitment,” said coach Joseph Migliano. “They train hard all week then have to come run all these meters in a meet and win; then when the team needs, drop out of their comfort zone and run a sprint or two for us. Not many girls would do that for the team, but Julianna and Faith are true leaders and role models.” Freshman Yolina Bastien dominated the 100/200m the entire regular season for Calhoun earning some major points at each meet; along with her new found talent of triple jumping which allowed her to score second or better in each meet. Sophomore Captain Julia Baguiao ran the 200m, 400m, long jump and hop in on all and any relay she was needed.

“These two were huge assets for us during the season,” Migliano said. “Reliable, driven and hardworking is the best way to describe them both. There’s no event they wouldn’t try or distance they wouldn’t run if it meant helping the team win.” Erika Klein, Skylar Bruno, Julia Cicero and Taryn Hilke earned major throwing event points at every meet that helps the girls dominate their league season. “Our throwers are some of the hardest workers around, not having a weight room really hurt them this season, but they didn’t let that bother them,” Migliano said. “They threw, trained and worked every day on their technique, to not only better themselves but help

the team.” Led by Senior Captain Nicole Devlin and Sophomore Captain Sara Manson, the girls piled up the points in high jump, long/triple jump and the 100m/400m hurdles. Devlin along with senior Ava Bayat didn’t lose a high jump or long jump event all season, earning major points along the way. Newcomer Maddy Ryan tried her hands at the 100m/400m hurdles this year. Migliano explained that it normally takes a hurdler a solid year to understand the technique and how to run them, but Ryan knew she didn’t have that type of time this year and worked tirelessly to get better each day, and that’s what she did. Each meet Ryan ran faster and faster and now she is one of the top girls in all of

conference 2. “Sara Manson is irreplaceable,” Migliano said. “There’s no better way to put it. Since she stepped onto the team as an eighth grader her impact was felt immediately. She can run, jump, sprint, hurdle and even pole vault. There’s no event I can’t put her in to help the team. She works hard day in and out and is a true role model for everyone on the team. She exemplifies what it means to be a multi-event athlete.” Manson led Calhoun in the 100m/400m hurdles, triple jump and pole vault; along with being ranked in the top five for each in all of Nassau County as well. As an eighth grader, Manson was the number one pentathlete for her age in the state and number three in the entire country.
