Planned Spontaneity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon. Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category. Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list. It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way. This is where that spontaneity comes into play. Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed. Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone? Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day. Phase one went off without a

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. And then came the rains. Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge. Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations… And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

Parting with the Past

Safety Experts Teddy bears and various beloved stuffed animals accompanied Forest Lake Elementary School kindergarten students in Wantagh during a Teddy Bear Clinic hosted by Stony Brook Children’s Hospital Trauma Center to prevent trauma and promote safety. According to SBCH, trauma (or injury) is the leading cause of death among children under 17 years of age and can be

preventable in most cases. SBU Trauma Center Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator Kristi Ladowski said the program’s goal is to provide the tools for students to keep themselves safe in cars and on bicycles. “It is up to you to keep your own bodies safe and to become safety experts,” Ladowski told the students. During the program, the students listened to safety tips, including wearing

a helmet while riding a bicycle and wearing a seatbelt in the car. They also learned that the back seat is safest for children. After the educational portion of the program, the students dressed like doctors and nurses and bandaged up their teddy bears and stuffed animals and filled out a hospital file. Because school mascot, Forester, is a bear, he paid a visit to the classroom.

A New Chapter Levittown’s Jonas E. Salk Middle School eighth-graders proceeded down the aisles of the school’s gymnasium in the ceremonial movingup tradition as parents and staff watched with great pride during the annual Moving Up Day on June 10th. After class officers Alexandra Gately, Alexandra Mercaldo and Caroline Johnson led the salute to the flag and the eighth-grade chorus, under the direction of

Lisa Levenberg, sang the national anthem, assistant principal Patrick Mulligan welcomed families and staff to this memorable event. “Today the community commemorates the roads we have all traveled together,” Principal John Zampaglione said. “You went to school as kids and are now leaving as young adults. May you always lead by example and work hard.” During the ceremony, the administration and

staff bestowed a number of special awards in the areas of academic excellence, character, athletics and citizenship. The administration then handed out the certificates of completion to each of the students as they approached the stage. The ceremony concluded with a special musical presentation by Salk graduate Ted Fiber to celebrate the momentous occasion.

Crossing Over

It was an evening of celebration as 247 Wantagh Middle School students participated in the annual crossing-over ceremony in the high school gymnasium. The ceremony opened with remarks from principal Dawn Matrochano, who explained that the ceremony is a time to reflect on the past three years. “You are stepping into the next stage of your

life,” she said. “Great things are coming and you should be proud of yourselves.” Graduates Jamie McDevitt, Justin Reisert and Olivia Vinson then reflected on the events and activities that occurred during the sixth through eighth grade, while Ethan Insinga noted that high school will be a time of opportunity and rewards. “Make every day of the next four years count,”

Ethan told his peers. After the celebratory speeches concluded, Assistant Principal Dr. Stephanie Scolieri called the names of the students one by one to the podium to receive a certificate of completion, handed out by members of the board of education and administration. After the ceremony, the graduates attended a dance in the middle school auditorium.

Celebration of Excellence

The Merrick Board of Education recognized the achievements of students and the accomplishments and retirement resolutions of faculty during its June 7th communication meeting. The evening began with awards honoring 24 students who had performed in the 2016 All-County Music Festival, 16 in the Long Island String Festival Association concerts and 131 in the New York State School Music Association Festival. bestowed the Board of Education Citizenship Award upon one student for embodying the qualities and values associated with the district. This award acknowledges students who demonstrate an appreciation and respect for all, a sense of responsibility toward themselves and others, and an understanding and pride to the school and community. The award recipients were Julie Moehringer from Birch School, Shannon Su from Levy Lakeside School and Alexander Vieni from Chatterton School. Five sixth-graders across the district were also recognized for participating in the Nassau County Math Tournament.

Those students include Eric Avellone, Lily Goch, Ethan Katsman, Brandon Lin and Jett Rosen. Members of the board presented the Distinguished Service Award to outgoing PTA Presidents Melissa Kuhl and Deborah Tolipano from Birch School and Michelle Kraus from Chatterton School. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick Palma honored the three presidents for going above and beyond for the students, faculty and community. Closing the evening celebration, the board accepted the resignations of nine district staff for the purpose of retirement, thanking them for their dedication and service.

Before an audience filled with proud family, peers and educators, eighth-graders at Grand Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District celebrated their moving up ceremonies on June 10th. Student Lauren Nilsen kicked off the ceremony with a powerful rendition of the national anthem. Grand Voices, under the director of conductor Amanda Cantwell, followed with “If You’re Out There” and “Life is a Highway.” Students will attend either John F. Kennedy, Sanford H. Calhoun or Wellington C. Mepham high schools within the district. High school

student speakers Harrison Ivers, Steven Obadiah, Alexa Beichert and Julianna Gargano offered words of advice for the incoming freshmen. “In order to make the most of your high school experience, try new things and get as involved as possible after school,” Ivers told the Legacy group at the noon ceremony. Students graduated in four different ceremonies, separated by their academic team. Eighth-grader Spencer Mattes delivered one of the student reflections, along with Kirsten Knowles, Aiden McCormack, Cooper Moran and Nathan Rosen. Addressing

his peers, Mattes said before they reached Grand Avenue most students immediately bonded over the fear of lockers. “Grand Avenue has offered me many opportunities to explore and experiment,” Mattes added. Principal Carlo Conte noted students would not have reached this milestone without the team of people that includes teachers, parents, coaches and educators. “I suggest you take a moment to find a teacher or family member that made a difference in your life and thank them,” he added. “A hug wouldn’t hurt either.”

Irish Scholarship Dolan Jones, a senior at Levittown’s MacArthur High School, was one of four students to receive a $750 scholarship from the Irish Americans in Government Association. In applying for the scholarship, Dolan wrote two essays, one about what his Irish ancestry means to him and another about

the 1916 Easter Rebellion’s significance to America. Dolan will study civil engineering at Roger Williams University this fall and recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play lacrosse. He is a school Peer Leader and member of the National Honor Society and Math and World Language honor societies.

He was nominated for homecoming king and is a two-sport athlete for soccer and lacrosse. During senior awards on June 1st, Dolan received the Justin D. Smith Memorial Scholarship and Levittown United Teachers Scholarship and was named Technology Student of the Year.

Chris Iuliano of the East Meadow UFSD was honored recently with the George Farber Outstanding Student Award. He earned the award for his talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. Chris says that he is grateful to be a student at the Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Career Academy. He credits Barry tech with not only helping him to achieve better grades, but with helping him to grow as a person. Chris is passionate about improving his academic performance and is diligent in completing his assignments. I’m grateful to my parents for encouraging me to come to Barry Tech,”

Chris said. “I’m more motivated to work now. I’m very proud of how I’ve improved my work and my attendance. My goal is to graduate high school, go on to college and pursue my dream of becoming a soccer player.” Though he is on the quiet side, Chris is well known and well liked by both teachers and fellow students for his generous and considerate nature. He can be counted on to help out in just about every situation and is always the first to volunteer, whether to help new students find their way around the school, or to run errands for his teachers. It currently stands as a memorial to former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students at Nassau BOCES was only surpassed by his love and care for them. Farber was the longestserving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009. “These students exemplify the very best of Nassau BOCES,” District Superintendent Dr. Robert Dillon said during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts. “Each of them embodies the true spirit of George Farber. Moving on Up Pomp and circumstance filled the auditorium at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District where students celebrated their moving up ceremonies on June 10th. Musical performances were offered by Word of Mouth, led by Dana Brandwein. Principal Dr. Taryn Johnson then addressed her students by saying “two years wasn’t enough.” “It’s not enough for me to shape you more and for me to share more with you,” said Dr. Johnson at the Team 8 ceremony. Students graduated in four different ceremonies,

separated by their academic team. Dr. Johnson stressed the importance of putting time into perspective in order to learn how to love and live in every moment. “Move forward knowing a team of people are enamored with your spirit,” she added. Students will attend either John F. Kennedy, Sanford H. Calhoun or Wellington C. Mepham high schools within the district. High school student speakers John Del Orfano, Nicole Imhof, Jade Klein and Rachel Mashal offered words of advice for the incoming freshmen. “You may face obstacles, but you will get past them,”

assured Mashal, Kennedy’s salutatorian. “Get involved and build strong relationships with faculty members. Challenge yourself and learn from your failures. Follow your passion and don’t give up on what you love.” Eighth-grader Julia Oladipo offered one of four student reflections, addressing her peers in an emotional speech. “We are moving up to a bigger challenge – high school,” she said. “Don’t be afraid of hard work, failure or making sacrifices. Appreciate others and remember we cannot stand on our own.”

Scientific Method Levittown fifth-grade student scientists presented their experimental results and observations during the Summit Lane Science Fair. The fair encouraged students to apply curricular knowledge as they designed experiments on various topics of interest. Under the direction of

teachers Judith Ascher, Debbie Breen and Lynn Collins, the students tried their hands at safe and practical experiments at home and shared their results on a formal backboard. In accordance with the scientific method, participants identified a

problem, formulated a hypothesis and developed a method to facilitate their experiment. After the experiments were conducted and results were analyzed, conclusions were made and presented to peers.

Symphonies of Spring Students throughout the East Meadow School District worked diligently to prepare for their spring concerts and it showed as faculty, family and community members applauded from

Each year, FLACS (Foreign Language Association for Chairpersons and Supervisors) presents this honor to a superintendent

or assistant superintendent that has demonstrated “clear and consistent support of World Language Programs.” Nominated by World Language chairs, Renée Fallon, Rosa Kaplan and Enrique Montes, Seinfeld has been an unwavering advocate of the World Language program in Bellmore-Merrick and genuinely believes language learning is a key

component of the course of study of all 21st century learners. “Mr. Seinfeld, Superintendent John DeTommaso, and the board of education have supported initiatives such as the addition of Mandarin as a fourth language selection for incoming seventh-graders,” said Kaplan.

Under the direction of music teachers David Fletcher and Dawn Waters, members of W.T. Clarke middle school’s and high school’s chamber ensembles performed while students, faculty and family members viewed

Rensselaer Medalists Division Avenue High School junior Annie Tao and MacArthur High School junior James May have both been named Rensselaer Medalists for excellence in mathematics and science. Each award will receive a $15,000 per year merit scholarship if he or she decides to enroll at the prestigious Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. During the 20152016 school year, Annie enrolled in Advanced Placement courses and the Accelerated Pre-Calculus

for College Credit course. In addition to being a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society and the school’s Science Research Program, Annie plays the xylophone and marimba in the marching band. She is also a badminton conference champion and runs on Division Avenue High School’s crosscountry team. James is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Tri-M, world language and math

honor societies. He is enrolled in MacArthur High School’s Science Research Program and is a member of Mathletes. Nico Racalbuto is a senior and four-year varsity starter with BellmoreMerrick’s John F. Kennedy High School’s boys lacrosse team who shattered the school’s single season goal

record, netting 56. An All-County selection last season, Racalbuto again led the boys lacrosse team in points, with 73. Racalbuto is a twoyear captain and leaves

Kennedy as the all-time leader in career goals (130) and points (196). He will be playing lacrosse at Adelphi University in the fall.

Knitting for a Cause periods knitting small hats to benefit young patients in the pediatric intensive care unit, burn centers, and maternity and neonatal intensive care units. Representatives from NUMC thanked the students for their thoughtful donations, discussed their

When Elle’s boyfriend, Warner, ends their relationship and heads to Harvard claiming she’s not “serious” enough, Elle takes matters into her own hands. Charming her way into law school, Elle begins outsmarting her peers and realizing law may be her natural calling.

Arts & Sciences Three teams comprised of nine Woodland Middle School eighth-graders in the East Meadow School District were victorious in the Nassau Community College 18th annual Arts and Science Fair. The competition encouraged students to conduct science experiments defining “What Matters?” using the scientific method.

This year’s theme urged participants to think about their lives and focus on those aspects that hold the most importance. Eighth-graders Vaishnavi Adupa, Zoya Cheema and Alana Jiminez placed first with their experiment, “The Effect of Aquaponics on Water Purity.” Taking home second were Matthew Owens, Kaamil Saeedullah

and Ryan Schneebaum for their work on “The Effect of Gender on Memory.” Alvin Kuruvilla, Michael Walsh and Alexa Wiencek placed third with their project, “The Effect of Light and Location on the Growth Rate of Bacteria.” The district congratulates all three teams on their hard work and success in the competition.

Museum’s mission is to create an awareness of and an interest in earth science, natural history and local history through the collection, preservation and exhibition of specimens and artifacts. During the competition, students conducted experiments using the standar d scientific method and principles of physics and chemistry to solve a common or uncommon problem. Both teams had to provide a written report

describing their projects’ purpose, initial research, experiment details, observations, preparation of data and conclusion. They accompanied their work with a display board that depicted their experimental findings through charts, graphics and diagrams. The district commends both teams for their dedication and hard work.

Recognized for Accomplishments East Meadow High School senior athletes were honored for their achievements on and off the field during the school’s Senior Athletic Awards ceremony on June 9th. The evening began with administrators, coaches, athletic department faculty and families acknowledging every senior from all fall, winter and spring teams. In addition to individual and team awards, students

also received scholarships, certificates and awards for their commitment to excellence. East Meadow High School Athletic Director Kevin Regan commended these students for their dedication and hard work over the course of the year. “This is an outstanding group of student-athletes who have represented East Meadow High School, their parents and themselves in such a positive matter,”

he said. “You have competed hard and well throughout the year…my congratulations to all of you.” Concluding the ceremony, the Athletic Wall of Fame inductees were formally announced. Projects encompass the fields of behavioral science,

biology, chemistry, earth science, energy, space, ecology and physics. During the competition, teams conducted original research in chemistry and ecology, along with a threemonth experiment. They presented their research at the LISC, Junior Division, held at Saint Anthony’s High School. The regional competition required them to deliver an eight-minute presentation on their experiments, followed by a question and answer

session. Among the list of honorees, eighth-graders Sarena Sahadeo and Mariam Zahran received the highest honors and the Listemela Leadership Award for their work.
