Ongoing Events The Ivy Lane Players will perform “Love Diatribe” through June 24th at the
Garden Project by collecting, turning and using the dirt to further enhance the garden and learn about the value of recycling. Matthew will add a bench to provide more seating in the garden, which is often used as an outdoor classroom, and will paint the back wall of the shed with chalkboard paint to create a space for students and teachers to write on. Other work will include landscaping and repairing any damages. Art teacher Jill Skelly and first-grade teacher Robin Obey started the garden
six years ago to teach the students the value of sustainability. Over the years, students and staff have enjoyed the “garden to table” experience during schoolwide activities such as salad day and stone soup day. “We are thrilled that Matthew selected Park Avenue, his former elementary school, as the beneficiary of his Eagle Scout project,” said Principal Eileen Speidel. “His improvements will make the garden more child-friendly.”

District Awards The East Meadow School District held its end-of-year awards ceremony on June 6th to recognize its middle and high school students for their outstanding achievements throughout the year. Central administrators, board of education
members and faculty from all four schools congratulated the students on their accomplishments in art, athletics, business, journalism, humanitarianism, writing, math and science. As the students accepted their awards, certificates
and medals in their respective categories, families and friends applauded their hard work, dedication and perseverance. The district congratulates these students on a successful school year.

Sweet Sounds of Spring Months of preparation and practice paid off as Birch School students in the Merrick School District recently performed two spring concerts. During both concerts, the school’s chorus, band, jazz band and orchestra performed a variety of spring classics to celebrate the vernal
season. The first was held at Birch in the morning for students, teachers and administrators, and the second was staged at Brookside School in the evening for families and community members. While all students on stage demonstrated discipline, devotion and skill, the fifth- and sixth-
grade honors orchestra in particular showed poise and etiquette, as they performed to a captive audience without the guidance of their orchestra teacher, Marcia Miller. The audiences responded with a standing ovation in appreciation of these young musicians’ talents and dedication.

The inventors of tomorrow are already hard at work as 29 students from the North Bellmore School District’s ALPHA program recently showcased ideas for products they would like to see on the market. Sixth-graders from the five elementary schools participated in the Invention Convention on May 31st at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary
School. They were asked to design and create either an original invention or improve an existing one. Under the direction of ALPHA teacher Gayle Angert, the students utilized the engineering design process — ask, imagine, plan, create and improve — to help them organize their thoughts and to complete the steps from beginning
to end. Ideas included household items, petthemed products and new electronics. In addition to presenting their prototypes, students created presentation boards with pictures, blueprints, slogans, logos, advertisements, business cards and an inventor bio section. Guests received a program and floor plan for the event.

Merrick Avenue Middle School’s moving up ceremony on June 9th was a glittery black and gold celebration. Students will attend either John F. Kennedy or Sanford H. Calhoun high schools depending on where they live within the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District. High school seniors Hadi Aziz, Sara Samir, Skylar Berkley and Jack Jones offered advice to these soon-to-be freshmen. “The next four years of your life are going to be
new, exciting, challenging and eye opening,” Berkley said. “You get out what you put in. Find something that makes you happy and go at it full force.” Sophia DeMato addressed her fellow classmates with a student reflection. “Some of my fondest school memories so far have been in this building,” she said. “I am now more independent and learned how to work harder.” Principal Dr. Taryn Johnson spoke about the upcoming change in
environment, peer group and procedures that lies ahead for the graduates. “From watching you I’ve learned that you are far more savvy, connected and resilient than many adults anticipated you would be,” she said. “The creativity of your ideas and your willingness to share them – notable. Your ability to connect to the needs of others – remarkable. Your commitment to our school and our district – legendary.”

One Tap shoes laced and ready to go. Costume hung on the doorknob with care. Steps on constant replay in my head {flap, flap, flap, shuffle hop…} all in preparation for the big night, my return to the dance recital stage after a five-year hiatus. Cue the butterflies. I have had a love/ hate relationship with performing for the majority of my twenty years at the studio. On the one hand, there is nothing quite comparable to that moment when the lights come up, the music begins to play and the rush of the moment engulfs you to the point that you simply perform – no overthinking what step comes next, am I smiling too much,

not enough; are my arms graceful, my hands “jazzy”… Of course, there is also that other scenario, that one that plays out in your subconscious the night before – the one where all the carefully rehearsed choreography evaporates from your memory at the most inopportune moment; generally when you happen to be front and center, spotlight squarely on you, smile frozen as you desperately try to ad lib something, anything. I would say I’ve had my share of each extreme through the years. It began with my very first recital at the tender age of six when I flew onstage mid-song, arms flailing, as I tried to catch up with my classmates as
we performed “Somewhere Out There” in our lemon yellow tutus. It ended, some twenty-plus years later, in a “big girl” tutu of silvery sparkle, dancing to “Wizards of Winter,” only this time I made it out for the entire performance. As I write these words, the stage is set – pun intended – for my grand finale tomorrow evening. Two numbers to perform over two acts, including, appropriately enough, the grand finale to “One” from A Chorus Line. One more time in the spotlight, one last night to shine… at least that’s the plan, anyway. Coming Next Week: Curtain Call

Exploring Earth Students at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District traveled around the world, exploring the dimensions of the earth, through the Earth Dome, a 19-by-22foot inflatable balloon set up in the school’s gymnasium. Throughout the day, fifth- and sixthgrade classes learned about geographical and

After exploring the outside of the Earth Dome, the students entered the inflatable to explore the oceans and land masses from a unique perspective. The district thanks the Chatterton School PTA for sponsoring this educational program.
Stepping Out on the Dance Floor As a culmination to a ballroom dance unit with Dancing Classroom of Long Island Instructor Jessica Salvesen, East Broadway Elementary School students in Levittown showcased their newly acquired skills on the dance floor for parents. For the past 10 weeks, the students gathered in the school’s front lobby where they were paired with partners and danced together in a circle. Halfway
through each practiced step, the students were then instructed to change partners, allowing them to work with a range of abilities. At the end of each session, two students were chosen to present their favorite “move,” which was then incorporated into a modern line dance with popular music. “It has been a 10-week journey of self-discovery,” DCLI educational liaison Eileen Clarke told parents
and administrators who came to watch the students’ performances. Dressed in their finest, the students linked arms and paraded into the cafetorium by class. Two pairs of students were selected to demonstrate each dance technique prior to group dances of the merengue, foxtrot, rumba, swing, tango and waltz. The exhibition commenced with an encore of the swing.

MacArthur High School’s 2017 Senior Awards Night, held on June 8th, was an evening of honor and celebration as district administrators, Nassau County government officials and representatives, and community and school organizations recognized the school’s top seniors for their outstanding accomplishments and achievements.
This much-cherished tradition acknowledged the students’ overall achievements in subject areas, community service, character and sports accomplishments during their four years of high school. Class of 2017 valedictorian Casey Pablo Butcher and salutatorian James May were also honored. Assistant Principal Anne Rao congratulated
the students on their dedication to success and sacrifices along the way as well as the parents and educators for their commitment to education. “I congratulate each one of you on a job well done and much success in the future,” Rao said. “Without the love and support of parents, your accomplishments would not be possible.”
Annual Hero Celebration Tears of joy resonated through the cafeteria of Summit Lane Elementary School in Levittown as second-graders in Christine Pace’s class honored a VIP in their lives during the annual hero celebration. The students collectively
sang songs to their guests and read a personalized letter about their hero’s most impressive qualities and why he or she is important to them. After reading their report at the podium, the students presented their heroes with an elaborately designed

booklet, which included photos pictured with their hero, the personalized letter and research. The event brought smiles to all invited and reinforced the students’ technology, research and writing skills.

also examined the shells and recorded the tanks’ temperature and humidity. Once the quails hatched, the students observed the chicks’ behavior and eating and drinking habits. The chicks were then relinquished to Seatuck Environmental Agency and eventually released into the woods.
Levittown parents and faculty welcomed Jonas Salk Middle School students with great pride as they entered the gymnasium for the annual moving up ceremony. After class officer Julie Magliano led the salute to the flag, the eighth-grade chorus, under the baton of Lisa Levenberg, sang the national anthem. Assistant Principal Patrick Mulligan welcomed parents and faculty to this cherished event, which starts a new academic chapter for the
graduates. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald told the students that the trip to MacArthur High School “is not a short walk across the parking lot,” but one that took three years of preparation. She also encouraged the students to get involved. “Make those four years count in every way,” she said. Principal John Z a m p a g l i o n e congratulated the students and thanked them for
their impact on the school culture. “With each of you is something of value,” he said. The administration and staff bestowed a number of special awards in the areas of academic excellence, character, athletics and citizenship prior to handing out certificates of completion to 330 graduates. The ceremony concluded with a special musical presentation by Jonas Salk graduate Ted Fiber to celebrate the momentous occasion.

A Memorial for Michael Dressed in superhero T-shirts, East Broadway Elementary School students and faculty in Levittown held a memorial for fifth-grade student Michael Martinez, who died in November 2016. The solemn, but upbeat event included reflections about Michael from his closest school friends and teachers Ann Marie Goldberg and Joanne Edelman, who described
him as someone who has taught the school community some of life’s most important lessons. The tone was also punctuated with performances by the community service chorus, who sang Carrie Underwood’s “Till I See You Again” and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again,” as well as the community service band’s playing of the “Star Wars” theme.
Principal Jeanmarie Wink also noted, “Michael showed great modeling behavior, which are traits of a superhero.” In addition, sisters Ella Martinez and Emily Martinez assisted in the unveiling of a painting titled “The Force is Strong” by teacher Danielle Saverese, which will hang in the school library in memory of Michael.
Tap Lessons Fifth- and sixth-graders clicked and clacked their way across the stage at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, which hosted the final part of its dance residency program. The students spent two weeks in May learning how to tap dance under
the direction of private instructor Joseph Webb. They had lessons every day which included discussion of the history of tap dance and an introduction to dance steps. The program culminated with a show for parents. Each class performed a choreographed routine and
a select group of students were also chosen for a tap ensemble. This was the fifth year the program has been held at the school. Earlier this year, kindergarten through second-grade students learned musical theater while third- and fourthgraders mastered hip-hop.

The Sweet Taste of Generosity The fifth-graders of Gene Vassel’s class at Barnum Woods Elementary School in the East Meadow School District were declared the winners of a recent schoolwide shoe drive. The class won a brunch celebration with Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo and Barnum Woods Assistant Principal Harriet Alfano for donating the most shoes during the
drive. Vassel’s class collected 177 pairs of shoes, aiding in the school’s total contribution of 2,351 pairs to the clothing recycling company Wearable Collections. According to its website, the New York City-based company keeps clothing, textiles and shoes out of landfills while generating funds for local charities.
“It’s truly remarkable to see our young children garner this enormous donation to help those in need,” said Campo. The district thanks the Barnum Woods Planning Management Team for organizing the drive and hosting the brunch to recognize the students’ generosity and hard work.

On May 15th, the young women of the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District’s Sanford H. Calhoun High School track and field team rivaled interdistrict squad from Wellington C. Mepham High School to compete in the Division IIA championships. Calhoun’s division has a reputation throughout the county as being by far the toughest to win and this year was no exception, explained coach Joseph Migliano. “The girls would face off with Mepham and Manhasset, amongst the rest of the division,” he said. “On a day that saw winds up to 25mph, Calhoun knew that they were going to have to be on their A-game to overcome, RELAY FOR LIFE - Relay for Life event raises nearly $64,000. food, supporting a survivor or caretaker, getting raffles…every part of the event is accomplished because of a host of students, staff and parents that make it happen,” said Principal Nicole Hollings. The event raised nearly $64,000.

In the 100m dash, senior Cristin Rodriguez took first and freshman Lisa Jose placed fourth. Rodriguez once again placed first this time in the 100m high hurdles. Teammates junior Paige Sfiroudis and senior Dana Brown won second and fourth, respectively. Calhoun picked up 22 points from this race, Migliano explained. In long jump, Sfiroudis was first and junior Katie Goodman was third. Sfiroudis also came in first in triple, while Rodriguez placed in the high jump. “Cristin Rodriguez is truly that special athlete, that myself and the team are going to miss greatly, she’s irreplaceable,” said Migliano. Junior Katie Corona won the 800m — a race that she was seeded fourth going in with three Manhasset girls above her but she upset them all to become
division champion and added 10 points to the team, Migliano explained. Rodriguez scored 30 points for Calhoun that day, while Sfiroudis was named MVP for Calhoun. “Paige is a special girl that had a tremendous day,” Migliano said. “It wasn’t long ago that she was only a stand out volleyball player, now she is a serious force in the track and field world. Not only is she a leader and one of the best jumpers in Nassau, but she is also currently ranked seventh in the state for long jump. Being a junior, the sky is really the limit for Paige and her potential.” The throwers, Jamie Campanelli, Julissa McLeod, Victoria Unz and Madison Padro, also placed in shotput and discus. Calhoun was able to upset Manhasset and take the championship by a score of 136-118; and go on to win the Division Championship for the second consecutive year.
