June’s Charity of the Month:

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Services include a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for youth and adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions, providing people, along with our U.S. Veterans, with opportunities to heal and work toward their recovery. Everyone possesses their own unique worth and individuality, and MHAW does a great job providing treatment and services that focus on goals and aspirations specific to each individual person. Classes include an array of indoor and outdoor physical activities, as well as the chemical free garden right near their Ronkonkoma facility. In the garden, people learn how to grow their own food while

connecting to the natural environment. Vegetables, fruit and herbs are donated to Charlotte’s Table food pantry, open each Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., which serves the broader community. MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Hosted by Founding Sons Law Enforcement/Military Motorcycle Club and Impressive and Aggressive Motor Club, attendees will visit up close with event registrants and their beautiful motorcycles, custom and classic cars. The day includes live entertainment by Muddy Johnson, while Johnny Numonic spins the tunes and attendees enjoy an array of food options, unique vendors and fabulous raffle prizes. The entry fee for motorcycles and cars is $20; for walk-ins, it is $5; and for children under 12, it is free. Moving Up Staff at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District drummed up the pomp and circumstance for three eighth-grade moving up ceremonies held on June 8th. They spoke with pride and joy of the class. “Collectively, they’ve compiled thousands of hours of community service and are beloved by our staff,” said Assistant

Principal Katelyn Dunn. “We were successful together because of the amazing partnership in the Bellmore-Merrick community between parents and schools.” Principal Dr. Taryn Johnson echoed sentiments of achievement. “You have permitted us to watch you develop a sense of agency, cultivate the spirt of giving and strengthen your commitment to school and

community,” she added. Sanford H. Calhoun High School senior, a MAMS alumna, Lauren Ameruoso addressed the graduates. “MAMS introduced me to the same friends I have today,” she said, encouraging students to practice being a hero every single day in high school. “Find a role model, step outside of your comfort zone, expand your empathy and do small good

Moving Forward What if I shared the secrets of success utilized by all of the Fortune 500 companies and the majority of small businesses, then showed you how to translate these principles into your daily life? Are you interested? If so, move forward and read on... Regardless of company size, companies make use of the Marketing Mix. This consists of the four marketing activities - product, price, promotion and distribution - that the firm can control to achieve assigned goals within a marketing environment. To fully understand this, please draw three circles on a piece of paper. In the first inner circle, write the word “Customer.” Outside the circle, draw a larger one and, in four equal parts, write the words “Product,” “Price,” “Promotion” and “Place” (also known as Place Utility.) Lastly, draw a third circle outside of the one with four equal parts and label this one “Uncontrollable Variables.” Following is an explanation of each one: Customer: The customer is at the center (or heart) of the circle, since companies must understand that the customer is at the center of all activities carried out by them. Once a company forgets that, they will eventually go out of business. Product: (Note: all of the four P’s are called “controllable variables” since every company

has control over how it handles each one.) In this case, every company has control over the product they make or manufacture. Price: Unless it’s a monopoly, the business must maintain some type of competitive edge in order to be attractive to the consumer. Promotion: This can be in the form of mass advertising (examples are reaching huge audiences at one time, like TV, radio, newspapers, etc.) or one-on-one advertising (examples here are face-to-face sales or telemarketers calling your home). Place: In economics, we call that place “utility” or, put another way, how the product gets to the consumer from where it’s made to where it is purchased. A good example here would be the famous San Francisco Sourdough Bread, which is made daily by local bakeries throughout the city and delivered fresh daily to local eateries and the airports. The third outer ring is called “Uncontrollable Variables,” where a company has no control over events that can increase or negatively affect their business. For example, as this column is being written, we are in our third day of rain, and more is expected for the next three days! How would you like to own a carwash and be closed for six days, or own a retail store that was heavily damaged by the powerful storms that ripped through the

Translating These Principles to Your Everyday Life Customer: Never forget that you are the customer, and if not treated with the respect that you deserve, you should stop dealing with them. Start buying with a firm that greatly appreciates your business. Product: In this case, you are the product. If you are in the job market, don’t forget that (as in business) you are competing with other prospects. So, what factors make you stand out from all the rest? Even in purely social situations, do you make friends easily and keep them for a long time? (I call that a friendship index.) Price: Back to the job market: What are your salary requirements in relation to the position being offered? Are you sure that it’s realistic? If not, can you accept a lesser amount? In effect, what are you really worth? Promotion: How are you promoting yourself? Are you making the best appearance possible with neatly pressed and presentable clothing? What about your resume - has it been prepared by a professional writer? Place: Is the position being offered in reasonable proximity to your house or

apartment? If not, do you have alternate ways to get there? Uncontrollable Variables: Think hard on this one. To the best of your knowledge, is there anything in your world that could get in the way of your planned progress? If so, is there any way around this potential obstacle? Summary: You have learned about the Marketing Mix, the tool that most companies use to actively compete in the market. We have translated those principles into your world and outlined how you might use these to get ahead in the world of business and your personal life. To gain the most of this exercise, think carefully about each principle and how it applies to you. Before you draw any conclusions, make certain that you are being 100% honest with your answers (even subconsciously). Going forward, you’ll be glad that you did. Author’s Note: I hope that you find this exercise helpful. This is one area where it is easier to understand the article when the three circles are visually presented in a classroom situation. Academic Challenges Wantagh Middle School faculty and parents joined in celebrating the advancement of 213 eighth-grade students, who will meet more rigorous academic challenges upon entrance into high school, during the annual crossing-over ceremony held on June 8th at the high school. Principal Dawn Matrochino encouraged the students to take a break to reflect on those

who helped them along the way. She also said, “Life is not a race, but a journey. Make every second count.” After Kelly Taggart led in the Pledge of Allegiance, graduates Kaylee Tate, Seth Braum and Alexa Gottlieb reflected on memories during grades 6-8, respectively. Graduate Nicholas Bifone gave words of encouragement by saying, “We must continue to take risks and believe everything is possible.”

“The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” ~ Aristotle They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are

genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

Grand had four graduation ceremonies separated by “teams” at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. John F. Kennedy High School senior Nicole Khouryawad was invited to address Team Justice at the 8 a.m. ceremony. “I encourage you not to be nervous but eager to take advantage of the opportunities offered at

high school,” she said, touting the Advanced Science Research, music and athletic programs. “The ASR program and its advisers teach life and professional lessons that stay with students for years after they graduate,” she added. Eighth-grader Riley Peckman offered a student reflection that centered around fond, pun-filled remarks about the Team Justice teachers. “All of the hard work we’ve put in over the last two years has really paid off,” she said.

Fire District Scholarships Wantagh High School seniors Jaclyn Corbin and Emily Kalinoglu and Levittown’s MacArthur High School seniors Katherine Inglese and Megan Opallo were recipients of the William A. Haps Memorial Scholarship sponsored by the Wantagh Fire Department. Each of the students received $1,000 toward their studies in the humanities this coming

fall. The William A. Haps Memorial Scholarship honors Haps, deceased since 1989, for his 42 years of commitment to the Wantagh Fire Department. To be eligible for the scholarship, recipients must intend to study humanities, including emergency services, criminal justice, nursing, teaching, social work or medicine. The

Woodland Middle School students in the East Meadow School District assembled in the auditorium on June 6th for a celebration of their academic achievements by district administrators, faculty, parents and peers during

the annual Academic Awards. Principal James Lethbridge and Assistant Principal Patricia Graham personally congratulated the 235 students receiving awards for their hard work and determination and extended them best wishes and much success as they

Wisdom Lane Middle School sixth-grader Armaan Singh was recognized as a winner in the Nassau Reading Council’s Young Authors’ Contest during the organization’s award ceremony at Molloy College on June 4th. Singh, who has already established himself as a talented writer with his newly published book of poetry “A Thought, a Whisper, an Idea,” was challenged by his teacher

Kathleen Auer to write a personal narrative for the contest. Singh was honored during the award ceremony along with three other sixth-graders from throughout Nassau County, for is piece titled “Once Upon a Heart” which described his experience of having heart surgery twice. Approximately 90 schools from Nassau County participated in the writing contest with almost

600 students from grades K-12. The competition honored high quality classroom writing with each student’s personal narrative being judged on voice, organization and authenticity. During the award ceremony, each winner had the opportunity to read their personal narrative aloud and winning pieces will be published in the New York City Young Authors’ Contest book.

Where in the World Bellmore students enrolled in Kelly Baccari’s and Annie Craine’s class at Winthrop Avenue School have ventured to ask the question, “Where Am I in the World?” In pursuing the answer to this question, they became experts on the everyday “leaders” in their school community and the purpose and value of the locations surrounding them. They also gained a deeper knowledge of Bellmore’s core values and leadership principles as they discovered how those in their environment exemplified related

character traits. The unit commenced with the students’ analysis of their position in the world in relation to the solar system, planet Earth, North America, New York and finally Bellmore. Each student was then assigned a specific location in Bellmore to research, coming up with questions to interview the owner or company representative. Some of the businesses studied were the Bellmore library and fire department, Stella’s Pizzeria, King Kullen and the post office. In researching the individual businesses, the

students analyzed how the owners and their business paradigms paralleled the Bellmore School District’s leadership principles and core values, bringing the district’s character development program to life. The students then utilized Google maps and made G Slides to create presentations on their research, becoming expert presenters of their information. They also used Tinkercard to create 3D digital designs of Bellmore village with the school’s 3D printer.

Reading Takes Flight

To kick off Levittown Public Schools’ annual Summer Reading Extravaganza, students in grades 6-8 at both Jonas E. Salk Middle School and Wisdom Lane Middle School gathered for an engaging literacy launch assembly to introduce the middle school’s new summer reading book, “Because of Mr. Terupt” by Rob Buyea. Wisdom Lane held their assembly on May 31st, while Jonas E. Salk followed on June 1. Students packed the auditoriums where administrators and staff members dressed as characters from the book. To get the students excited about the storyline, each faculty member walked up to the microphone with

their unique costumes and told the students about who their character is. This raised questions in the students’ minds about the mystery surrounding the storyline and what happened to Mr. Terupt in the book. English Language Arts Director Kerin Slattery also discussed what the Summer Reading Extravaganza entails and why the district participates. Since the Levittown Public Library plays an important role in the program, Slattery introduced librarians from the public library who spoke about summer events held at the library that coincide with the book. The middle school students also learned that

they can engage with their peers and submit projects relating to the book throughout the summer on a webpage that can be accessed through the district website, levittownschools. com. If students utilize the website and attend the library events during the summer, they will receive prizes and raffle tickets for the opportunity to meet the author in the fall when Buyea visits the school. At the conclusion of the event, the students had the opportunity to ask questions about the program and each received their own copy of “Because of Mr. Terupt” to read during the summer, courtesy of the district.

History to Life Third-graders at Lee Road Elementary School in the Levittown Public Schools channeled famous figures from throughout history during their 2018 Third-Grade Wax Museum on May 31st. Students in Melanie Anderson and Kristine Boyd’s classes had the opportunity to select a famous person from history and learn about their individual’s lives through an in-class biography project. During their research process, the students utilized books, internet resources, videos and magazines. They also read, took notes, gathered and synthesized information.

Showcasing what they had learned, the classes invited family members to their wax museum where they dressed and posed like their famous individual. They also shared their display boards which featured a hand-drawn photo of their researched individual and technology-based elements. Technology played a large role in the project as students created 10 interesting facts using Microsoft Word, typed a poem, brainstormed a concept web using the program Kidspiration, inferred character traits and learned how to write the traits in WordArt. In addition, the students

sequenced the events of their individual’s life using the program Timeliner. The third-graders acquired these new technology skills with the help of classroom teachers, computer teacher Arlene Zabatta and by working independently and with their peers on computers, laptops and I-pads. After the students synthesized their research, they were challenged to write a speech from the point of view of their individual of study. Many memorized their speeches which family members heard by tapping the student on the shoulder during their visit to the museum.

Meeting the Needs

Winthrop Avenue students in the Bellmore School District have joined in on the first “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” food drive, sponsored by New York State Sen. John E. Brooks. The event, which took place the week of June

Honored for Success

Accolades abounded as Division Avenue High School seniors from the Class of 2018 were recognized in front of administrators, board of education members, faculty and loved ones during the school’s annual Senior Awards Night on June 5th. Students received scholarships and awards for their exceptional academic, art, athletic and musical abilities, along with their leadership skills, service and character. Scholarships and awards were generously provided by the Levittown community members, faculty, Division Avenue alumni and various local

and school organizations. The special evening, coordinated by guidance counselor Elizabeth Thompson, was hosted by guidance and counseling chairperson Mark Curtiss who introduced Principal John Coscia at the start of the ceremony. Coscia praised the seniors for their hard work and for their service to the high school and the community during the course of their high school career. “On this stage tonight are the achievers, the dreamers, the doers,” he said. “They arrive every day to not merely go through the motions but to take each day by the horns and attack through their

deepest passions, desires and intellect.” Throughout the evening, scholarship and award recipients were called upon the stage where they were praised for their positive impacts. Speakers pinpointed their recipient’s strengths and how they reflected the meaning of the scholarship or award that they handed out. In addition, valedictorian Joy Kim and salutatorian Charles Mauro were formally acknowledged. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the seniors and all in attendance were welcomed to a reception in the school’s cafeteria to celebrate the students’ accomplishments.

Wantagh High School thespians Billy DeVito, Carlo Tobia and Lindsay Whiteman were nominated for the Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance. The students were three of fifty students representing 27 regional high schools that competed for the title of Best Actor and Best Actress during a performance master class taught by a team of Broadway professionals, held on May 19th at Pearl Studios in Manhattan. The master class was followed by a talent showcase judged by actress Celia Keenan-Bolger (“The Glass Menagerie”), Pace

University BFA Musical Theatre Program Director Amy Rogers, casting agent Merri Sugarman and actor Alton Fitzgerald (Mufasa in “The Lion King”). Although Billy, Carlo and Lindsay did not move forward in the competition, being nominated is a prestigious honor for high school actors. The Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance recognizes the acting talents of high school thespians, whose goals mirror those of beloved actor and director Roger Rees, who recognized the importance of theatre arts education.

To compete for the award, nominees had to perform in a qualifying role in an eligible drama or musical that was adjudicated by either a team of industry professionals or educators who attended the production. Billy, Carlo and Lindsay performed leading roles in “Anything Goes” (Sir Evelyn Oakleigh, Moonface Martin and Reno Sweeney) during the 2017-2018 school year. The Wantagh School District congratulates Billy, Carlo and Lindsay on this significant achievement.

Science Congress In April, several students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s science programs completed independent research and presented their projects at the 2018 Long Island Science Congress competition. On May 22nd, at St. Anthony’s High School, they were awarded various honors, as well as the potential to qualify for states. From John F. Kennedy High School, ASR junior Whitney Sussman was awarded Highest Honors and invited to present her project at the New York State Science Congress in June. In addition to advancing to the state-level, Whitney received a $200 award for her research, “The Role of Clock Genes in Small Intestine Glucose Absorption.”

Honors was awarded to Claudia Dreyer and High Honors was awarded to David Frank and Jonathan Mashal. From Sanford H. Calhoun High School, Jessica Lin took home an Honors award in the category of chemistry, for her material science research completed last summer up at MIT, “Wear of Cast Iron & Dual Phase (DP) Steel Under Varied Conditions.” At the middle school level of the competition, from Grand Avenue, honors was awarded to Cameron Franceschina and Christopher Luisi. Highest Honors award was awarded to Tyler Bissoondial and Timothy Langone. Additionally, the following were also awarded: Ekaterina Fakinos, Jake Levine,

Middle School Recognized The Anti-Defamation League has recognized Wantagh Middle School as one of the nation’s 1,600 No Place for Hate schools. This prestigious designation was accomplished through the sponsorship of activities that promote acceptance, tolerance and kindness on campus and by sending a clear message throughout the school that all students have a place to belong. In order for a school to be considered a No Place for Hate school, the school

Moved by a video she saw on starving polar bears, she has helped raise funds for wildlife conservation with the Polar Bears Club. Teacher, Deborah Blum, wrote, “She is an Honors student who is kind to everyone.” Described by her teacher, Taryn Aponte, as a leader to her peers and academically, Fietz is a member of the Student Leader Corps and serves as a role model in dedicating herself to her school and community. She has volunteered her time for school projects such as Sports Night and Breakfast with Santa. As a volunteer with Little Hands Helping Little Hands, she has baked desserts for the residents of Ronald McDonald House and has shared her

outstanding math abilities as a Peer Tutor with other students. Each year, Levittown Community Council honors three students who have done outstanding volunteer work in their school and in the community. A student from each of the local schools is selected by faculty of that school and the board of directors of the Council selects the first place winner. The students are presented with certificates by the Council and prizes for each of the winners are donated by Sterling National Bank and VFW Post 9592 of Levittown. The certificates congratulate the students on their accomplishments and thanks them for the work they’ve done. Each certificate says, “Your efforts and acts of kindness are an example of the spirit the Levittown Community Council wishes to encourage in residents and those who have a stake in our community.”

East Meadow Honoree

Ana Zoraida Moreno of East Meadow, an English as a Second Language (ESL) student at the Nassau BOCES Adult Learning Center (ALC), earned the George Farber Outstanding Student Award for 2018. She has demonstrated a variety of remarkable traits including talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. Ana was honored during the eleventh annual awards celebration at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Back in her native Columbia, Ana was well established and happy as an accomplished professional and successful accountant. When her daughter was born, however, Ana began to think of the child’s future and, in the interest of providing her with the best possible educational and professional opportunities, applied for residency to the United States. For 17 years she persisted in following that dream, raising her daughter to become fluent in English

as well as Spanish, and preparing her for a new life in the states. Two years ago, Ana and her daughter were finally granted entrance to the U.S. Her daughter is currently attending college, where she is studying business and thoroughly enjoying herself. Life for Ana, however, has been a bit more difficult. Struggling with a hearing disability while learning a new language is a significant challenge, but Ana faces it head on, with the same determination that got her to the U.S. She makes every effort to reinforce what she has learned, staying after class to perfect her pronunciation, improving her conversational English and devoting every possible moment to her studies. Ana’s hard work is paying off. In less than two months, she increased her score on the speaking test by more than 100 points. Her grasp of the language has improved so much that she spends her free time reading magazines in English and is able to help

her fellow ESL classmates. Ana is currently preparing for her citizenship test and plans to eventually work as an accountant right here in New York. “Ana Zoraida Moreno is a woman of incredible drive and spirit,” wrote her award nominator, Adult Educator Lorena Lorca. “She is intensely devoted to her daughter and has done all she can to help her thrive. Seeing her daughter blossom into an independent young woman fills Ana with pride. It warms my heart to see it.” “Ana started off as a shy, timid student who was really unsure of herself and her ability to be successful,” said Adult Learning Center Principal Michele Cohen. “Since then, she has blossomed into a student leader and a mentor.” “Nassau BOCES has helped to bring out the best in me,” Ana said of her experience at ALC. “My favorite part of school is my class with Lorena. It’s interactive and dynamic, and all of the students in the class get along well. I’m proud of my decision to study English,” she added. “It has made my life in the United States a lot easier.” For the past eleven years, outstanding students have been earning this award in memory of former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students was surpassed only by her love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009.

Medalist Selected General Douglas MacArthur High School junior Saajid Chowdhury was recently honored with the Rensselaer Medal Award from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for his outstanding academic achievement in mathematics and science. As a medalist, Chowdhury is awarded with a $25,000 per year college scholarship, guaranteed for four years if he chooses to enroll at

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. It can also be extended into a fifth year for graduate school. The Rensselaer Medal is presented to distinguished high school juniors each year to recognize their academic achievement and to motivate students toward careers in science, engineering and technology. Chowdhury is interested in pursuing a career in theoretical physics or applied math in

the future. This year, Chowdhury was enrolled in high level courses such as Advanced Placement U.S. History, Advanced Placement Physics 2 and Advanced Placement Calculus BC. In addition, he is involved in numerous extracurricular activities with science research teacher Dr. David Friedman and is a member of the school’s orchestra.

Letters of Intent Seniors in the East Meadow School District recently signed national letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Both East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools held NLI ceremonies on May 31st for the graduating seniors. From East Meadow, Patrick Hoffman and William McQuillan will continue their baseball careers at Molloy College and New York Institute of Technology, respectively. Ashley Pereira will also

remain local to her high school, as she intends to join the swimming program at LIU Post. Celina Lo is set to join the lacrosse team at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, while Christina Loeffler signed on with the softball team at Post University in Connecticut and Victoria Fuduli will join the Le Moyne College soccer program in Syracuse. Three individuals from W.T. Clarke all signed to join programs at NYIT: Mike Rodriguez joins

McQuillan on the baseball team, Rexhep Dalipi has committed to the school’s soccer team and Javier Lopez will be running track for the Old Westbury campus. Kyle Kandel is set to play football at LIU Post, while a pair of students are slated to enroll at Queens College, as Matt Rubenstein joins the baseball team and Katherine Barahona will play lacrosse. Additionally, Natalia Reyes has signed on with Southern New Hampshire University for a spot on its lacrosse team.

All six schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been selected as No Place for Hate Schools. The Anti-Defamation League’s No Place for Hate initiative is a school climate improvement framework that provides Pre K-12 schools with an organizing framework for combating bias, bullying and hatred, leading to long-term solutions for

creating and maintaining a positive climate. “The Ambassadors and One Voice One Message Committee led our schools along with school wide events such as Challenge Day,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mara Bollettieri, who helped create the OVOM initiative, a districtwide, student led think tank that was created in March 2014 in response to the Dignity Act.

Representatives from each school’s staff and students attended a breakfast on May 25th in New York City and were presented with their banners. “There is still much work to be done and more conversation and empathy building to do but we are working on solutions and helping our students grow as people,” Bollettieri added.

Leadership in Music teacher Erica Glikos, the orchestra performed “Royal Promenade,” “Whistle While You Work” and “A Maiden’s Rescue” to the delight of the audience. Choral students, under the direction of music teacher Maria Pisciotta and choreography by Mallory Cogen, performed a playlist of more modern pieces including “Showtime,” “True Colors,” “Sally Sells Seashells” and “Moana’s” “How Far I’ll Go.” The concert commenced with

a recorder performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow. ” Principal Sally Curto congratulated the students on their stellar performance and said it was obvious that dedication and teamwork paid off in the end. “It is no wonder that Bellmore has been recognized for the second consecutive year by the NAMM Foundation as a best community for music education,” she said.

In their inaugural year, Robotics Clubs at both Grand and Merrick Avenue middle schools met weekly to collaborate on projects and learn about coding. “Students started by assembling a standard robot and learning to code basic movements,” said Michelle Biancardo, a technology teacher and the adviser to both schools’ clubs. “Students programmed the robot

to follow a line, sense an object and go around it or pick up an object. All components such as an armature – what spins the motor - were built by the students and then coded to perform the task.” The team, along with Grand Avenue’s Robotics Club, recently competed in the Adelphi STEP Robotics Competition. Students began building robots from scratch in March.

“I was so impressed with our middle school students and their robots,” said Science/STEM Chairperson Rob Soel. “They were all excited and well prepared for both the presentations and the actual competition in the LEGO Mindstorm field.” Grand Avenue placed eighth and Merrick Avenue 24th out of 30 teams.

A New Language four third-graders in each. The middle school students introduced themselves in Spanish and read a Spanish book titled “El Dia de La Tierra” meaning Earth Day, to the third-graders. After the reading, the groups discussed words from the story and created a sentence that could be found in the book. They then worked together to draw a picture representing their Spanish sentence. In addition, the eighthgraders planned a lesson in the form of a game for their group which reinforced the Spanish vocabulary words in a fun way. These included a matching game, Bingo, a guess the word game and more. The middle school students also sang a song in Spanish

just for the third-graders. This was the sixth year that both schools joined together for this peer mentoring Spanish lesson. The experience not only allowed the third-graders to learn new material, but also gave the eighthgraders the opportunity to create a lesson plan and learn the important role of a teacher. “If feels great to take what we have learned and teach other kids,” said eighth-grader Nicole Abedisian. “Our experience was so much fun and then to be able to teach other kids and let them know that this is going to be hard but it’s going to be fun was great. To learn a new language is a new experience of life.”

Jonas E. Salk Middle School eighth-graders in Veronica Miller’s Spanish class visited Nancy Alt’s third-grade class at Gardiners Avenue School on June 1st to teach the younger students Spanish vocabulary words relating to recycling, correlating with the third-graders’ community unit. Jonas E. Salk Middle School librarian Kirsten Anderson also assisted with the meet-up. Prior to their visit, the middle school students prepared a PowerPoint lesson for the third-graders so they could practice the Spanish vocabulary words beforehand. Once together, five groups were formed with about three to four eighth-graders and three to

Help Hope & Smiles Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to helping children with autism, recently teamed up with Diana’s Music Lessons, a private inhome music lesson and instrument rental company, to put on a free Autism-Friendly Parent and Child Music Workshop. The event ran for 75 minutes at the Seaford Public Library on June 2nd. Children ages 4-8 attended with a guardian to not only enjoy all that was offered, but to learn and grow through the wonders of music. The event was split into three segments: a drum circle, which helped children learn, retain and create drumming patterns; a keyboard lesson, which allowed the children to match color-coded keyboard keys to color-coded sheet music so they could easily learn simple songs; and, lastly, a creative music-based craft, which allowed these children to create and decorate their own percussion instruments. Each child has his or her own strengths, and this event helped showcase that. This won’t be the last free event that Help Hope & Smiles puts on.
