Eric Aguilar, a senior at Division Avenue High School from the Levittown Public Schools, was honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a bronze President’s Volunteer Service Award. Granted by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, the award is presented to those who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. Among his volunteer work, Aguilar completed a community service project through Junior Achievement, a nonprofit organization that empowers young people to own their economic success. He visited Summit Lane Elementary School with fellow seniors from Division Avenue High School’s National Honor Society and taught the students about the importance of economics. As a dedicated violin player

Photo courtesy of the Levittown Public Schools and tuba player in the marching band, Aguilar also gives back to the music community in Levittown whenever he can. “It feels great to give back to my community,” he said. “To be recognized really humbles me and
makes me feel good that I’ve done something great for the community.” After graduation, Aguilar will attend the City College of New York and plans on studying to become an architect one day.
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!
New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for
After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. GIRL SCOUT AMBASSADOR TROOP 3271 HONORED - Seaford/Wantagh Girl Scout Ambassador Troop 3271 was recently honored at an award ceremony at St. Francis de Chantal. These Graduating Seniors have been together since kindergarten, with two very welcome additions joining the troop at the start of middle school. Over the years, the girls have shared many adventures, taken advantage of a number of educational opportunities, performed a good deal of community service, and enjoyed countless laughs. Camping trips to Blue Bay, fire circle fun, and sleeping under the enormous whale at the Museum of Natural History were just a few of the girls’ favorite memories. As troop spokesperson Katie Crawford stated, “I think Troop 3271 is evidence of the amazing sisterhood Girls Scouts can provide. As we continue on to the next stage of our lives, I hope we will always remember that our friendships are like a circle, they have no end.”
Organics Today Farm is a small organic farm is East Islip, which grows non GMO organic produce that you can trust! Their farmstand is open to the public every day with fresh picked organic produce! Their owner Mike runs various programs for the community such as Pregnant Drives, Field Trips, Volunteer Opportunities, Gardening Classes and Bee-Keeping Classes! Their Work For Food program is also another way the community can become involved with the farm. This program allows people to volunteer their time and contribute as few or as many hours as desired, in replace for a bundle of fresh organic food! There are many duties that can be performed on the farm and Organics Today Farm is accepting new volunteers at the moment! There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment.

They asked questions and spoke about important health and safety topics. The fifth graders then formed small groups and rotated throughout the gymnasium to six different stations where students from St. John’s educated them on topics which included heart health, communicable disease, trauma, emergencies, drug awareness and more. Within the stations, each
group learned more about x-rays, how to conduct CPR, find and track their heartbeat, wear goggles to feel the negative effects of drunk driving and even explore cells under a microscope, among other activities. “My favorite part of this event was wearing the goggles,” said fifth grader Michael D’Angelo. “It’s not safe to get in the car with people drunk because when I tried them on I felt dizzy and I couldn’t grab the pennies that they placed in front of me.”

As part of a schoolwide initiative at the East Meadow School District’s McVey Elementary School, special area teachers came together for a combined second grade mindfulness and yoga unit that resulted in published books. Music, gym, computer and library teachers each created specific curricular interpretations of mindfulness and yoga in their classrooms. Library teacher Ellen O’Neill introduced yoga poses to students through characters and animals in
books. Students continued to personify animals that could be represented by yoga and vinyasa poses. Music teacher Samantha Schick played calming sounds through the piano, guitar and other instruments as part of a seated guided meditation to further the unit. Physical education teachers Michael Simone and Deirdre O’Regan also held yoga lessons and mindfulness activities during their classes. Following a lesson on the basics of story structure with Mrs. O’Neill, students began
developing their story before going through the writing processes of illustrating and editing before publishing. Computer teacher Randy Frances helped to improve the overall structure of each student’s story. Ms. Frances presented a lesson on adjectives that were used to describe characters and their personalities. Each student’s story and adjoining illustration were put together to create a published book for each class. The books have been made available in the school’s library.
