This year there are two new theatres participating in Massachusetts, the Somerville Theatre in Somerville and the Capitol Theatre in Arlington. The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program is the Jimmy Fund’s oldest annual fundraising effort. Over the past 64 years, the Jimmy Fund/ Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections program has raised $29,000,000 for Dana-Farber. In its early years, the Theatre Program attracted the support of such stars as Jimmy Cagney, Loretta Young, Bing Crosby, and baseball legend Ted Williams. Volunteers are needed to help collect contributions for the Jimmy Fund. Volunteers receive T-shirts and possible other gifts like movie tickets, upcycled bags, or the chance to win Red Sox game tickets, depending on the time they commit to the program. Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So Summer is officially here… now what? Well, for me, in addition to all the normal seasonal stuff most of us look forward to, I am eagerly anticipating catching up on some quality TV time. Rerun Season, as I like to refer to it, is prime time to make use of that “On Demand” feature and settle in for some marathon viewing sessions, don’t you think? Remember all those cable TV series your friends keep talking about that you’ve never had the chance to check out? Well, plop down on the couch, put your feet up and start with Episode I, Season I. Watch a few episodes a night, every night, and you’ll be all caught up before you know it.

Oh, and let’s not forget about that pile of magazines from those subscriptions you just can’t bear to cancel. How many of you have accumulated quite the collection? What’s that, a Winter Music Preview on the cover? Only slightly outdated… take that cup of tea outside and start turning those pages. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can always attempt to crack open an actual book, too. I know, I know, such a thing is foreign to most people in this day and age. But remember how much you used to love it? How easy it was to become engrossed in chapter after chapter of a good novel to the point that you never wanted to put it down? Well, summer is the perfect opportunity to rediscover that passion.

Of course, beautiful beach weather always beckons, but the good part is that books and magazines travel easily enough. And with the technology of today, so can TV shows, actually. Take your tablet along for the ride, stick your toes in the sand, and insert a beach chair in place of that couch. You’re all set! Just think, an entire month to reintegrate yourself into the culture that you’ve been missing out on these last few months (or years, as the case may be). Time to do something for yourself, wouldn’t you say? Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to anguish over all the normal daily obligations. After

the ensemble performed Alfred Reed’s “A Festive Prelude” and Julie Giroux’s “Mambo Perro Loco,” they proceeded to play what Mr. Levy described as one of the more complicated and advanced pieces of the evening, Mark Camphouse’s “Yosemite Autumn.” To the delight of the audience, the program concluded with John Philip Sousa’s patriotic song, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Following the music department’s tradition, each of the seniors was recognized for his or her participation in the school’s music program.

Good Deed Awards

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and members of the Town Board today congratulated and honored the Town of Hempstead’s impressive group of Eagle Scouts and Gold Award recipients. In 2013, Hempstead Town is home to more than 150 Boy and Girl Scouts who achieved the highest rank in their respective organizations. The annual Scout Recognition Ceremony was hosted at the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick, a special sanctuary for plant and wildlife and a popular nature and recreational destination for residents. Murray presented each Scout in attendance with

Scouts Recognized

The Bellmore Merrick Bulldogs Ice Hockey Club’s 2012-2013 season may be over, but it was a season for the record books. They expanded their organization with a second middle school team which proved a positive decision. Both Middle School Teams (Navy and Maroon) won in the league playoffs, and their brother JV team came up short in their league playoff game. the 2013-2104 season. They are losing 6 players from their 2012-2013 team due to aging out; but their upcoming team for the 2013-2014 season will be adding experienced players to their rosters. The organization’s 2012-2013 players earned themselves various organization awards. Such as Most Improved Player, presented to the player who demonstrates the most substantial improvement throughout the season; awarded to Jeremy Blitzer (JV), Frank Karp (MS Navy) and Christopher Capozzi (MS Maroon). Most Valuable PlayerPresented to the player who has contributed the most toward the success of the team for the current season; awarded to Frank DeVito (JV) and Brandon Baccarella (JV), Chris Yodice (MS Navy), Keith Keogh(MS Maroon)

and Mitchell Jamol (MS Maroon). Stephen M. Ferro Award - Presented to the player whose work ethic, teamwork, commitment and dedication inspires others; awarded Robert Sturiano (JV), Eric Platt (MS Navy) and Emma Hayes (MS Maroon). Season For The Record Books

A strong mind and body was the focus for students enrolled at Barnum Woods Elementary School. For an entire day, the students participated in the school’s ninth annual health fair. During this muchanticipated event, the school sponsored an array of 20-minute ageappropriate workshops to assist students and staff in gaining knowledge about physical fitness, personal health and maintenance of a safe and healthy environment. In addition, the participants were made aware of the many valuable resources that the community has to offer. During the course of

the day, students attended various diversified workshops that were supervised by experienced health care professionals. These sessions included a cardiologist who talked about heart health, a radiologist who made reference to the skeletal system and a pediatric dentist who gave instruction on oral hygiene. Also a dermatologist spoke about overexposure to the sun, and a chiropractor lectured on the importance of posture and how to correctly carry backpacks. Students also attended physical education classes featuring Zumba, hip-hop and CrossFit training.

Musical Showcase

During lunchtime, students were provided with a “rainbow of colors” menu of healthy foods. Additionally, most of the school participated in Nassau County’s fingerprinting program. One of the highlights of the day was a workshop that brought in medevac helicopter and mounted police units. “The health fair was not only a success, but also a great way to bring the school and members of the East Meadow community together in the effort to become a more healthy community,” Barnum Woods Principal Gregory Bottari stated.

The W.T. Clarke High School Spring Concert showcased the wide scope and versatility of the talent being developed in the East Meadow School District with performances from the jazz ensembles I and II, women’s choir, mixed chorus and chamber orchestra. The women’s choir set the tone for the evening with their spoton rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner. Following were the jazz ensembles, both directed by Steve Barbieri, who performed brilliantly in tandem, on numbers such

as Ray Ortiz’s “Mambo Loops” and Jeff Jarvis’s “Critical Mass.” The women’s choir, directed by Robin Hall and accompanied by Amanda Hall, opened their set with a perky vocalization of Don Raye and Hughie Prince’s “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and closed with an exciting interpretation of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge over Troubled Water.” The chamber orchestra, directed by Adrianna Donovan, played four songs, including the familiar strains of J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Two

Violins – Vivace, featuring soloists Jordi Ariel Lotito and Daniel Wang. They finished their set with Louis Prima’s “Sing, Sing, Sing.” The mixed chorus, also directed by Robin Hall and accompanied by Amanda Hall, closed out the show with four songs, including Brian Lewis’s “I Hope You Dance” and Jack Feldman and Alan Menken’s “Seize the Day” from the current Broadway show “Newsies.” They also combined with the chamber octet for their performance of Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, K. 618.

The students of W.T. Clarke Middle School dazzled friends, family and faculty with a wide range of musical skills when they took to the stage for the second part of their spring concert on May 22nd. The program featured a variety of classical standards and familiar tunes, which were performed by the jazz ensemble, chamber singers, chamber orchestra, eighth-grade

orchestra, eighth-grade chorus and eighth-grade band. The enthusiastic and talented musicians and singers belted out a series of musical numbers that elicited rousing applause from the audience, from the jazz ensemble’s version of “Gonna Fly Now (Theme from Rocky)” by composer Bill Conti, to the chamber singers’ delightful take on the hit single “I’ve Got the Music in Me” by Bias

Boshell. The eighth-grade chorus’ version of Greg Holden and Drew Pearson’s “Home,” the debut single from “American Idol” Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips, left audience members cheering. The eighth-grade band concluded a night of wonderful performances with several songs, including a powerful rendition of “Encanto” by composer Robert Smith.

A high GPA and a fancy college sweatshirt do not guarantee happiness or success. It is all about hard work. A wise man once told me, “Garbage in, garbage out.” What this means is that the more effort, the more blood,

sweat and tears you put into everything that you do, the more life will pay off. There is no promise of money once you graduate. The only hint that you are an overachiever is that diploma, so you had better be hard working! Given enough motivation, enough drive and the desire to succeed, even a college dropout can become the billionaire behind one of the world’s biggest companies. So before you pout about not getting that 100 Grade Point Average, or that perfect SAT score, remember, one day you could become Bill Gates.
