Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, (who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair) but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering his services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC area.
Valhalla is a 34’ long 12’ 3” wide, a very stable boat that has plenty of room for both wheelchairs and passengers with a wide transom door and a hardtop enclosure for protection from the elements.
With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Tripping Down Memory Lane I recently attended my old dance studio’s annual recital, where I had the opportunity to watch the entire show from the comfort of the audience for only the second year, after 20 years of “gracing” the stage myself. I use that term lightly, as there were quite a number of cringeworthy moments during those two decades of dance. How could there not be? There was the time I froze midway through a number, right as I was dead center, absolutely perplexed as to what the next step might be. Dozens of others twirled and leapt around me, as I stood there, horrified. Talk about the world seeming to move in slow motion around you. All in all, it was probably a five-second pause; but it sure seemed like an eternity until the choreography (thankfully) kicked back in.
Then there was the year I was selected to sit atop another dancer’s shoulders, while he carried me clear across the stage. Oh, and did I mention we were dressed in circus attire? The fact was, we had rehearsed the lift and the dynamics associated with balancing in such a precarious position for weeks on end. However, we had failed to account for the silky, slippery material the costumes would be made of. You can imagine the rest. I believe there exists a photo of the scene, with me desperately clinging onto the “ringmaster’s” hat for dear life with a huge, frozen, petrified grin, silently willing the stage to shrink so that we could make it into the wings immediately. Ah, memories… And then there was the ultimate classic. My first year, six years old. Unfamiliar with the protocol of lining up before
my number, how much time to allow, etc., my mother and I found ourselves in the dressing room as the first few notes of “Somewhere Out There” filtered through the doorway. My song! I’ll leave you with this image: A dozen or so girls tiptoeing in their tutus to the music when, out of nowhere, comes another tiny ballerina, arms flailing, flying across the stage to take her position among the class. Yup. I always did know how to make an entrance. After 20 years, I took my final curtain call. But the desire to dance remains; the amazing feeling you get from being on stage – one that you would only know if you have had the privilege of being there – still lingers on, even as I watched the next generation of dancers take their turns in the spotlight. May they have as many fond memories as I do (and a few bloopers too!).

To conclude their foreign language unit of study on Latin American and its cultures, fifthgrade students in Jennifer Eicholz’s, Linda Lebowitz’s, Jody Leibowitz’s and Gina Paino’s classes at Bellmore’s Shore Road School hosted a Latin American Appreciation Day. Working together with music teacher Laura Laude and librarian Mary Willis, FLES teacher Angelita Piche developed

an interdisciplinary/crosscurricular program to explore our Latin American neighbors in the Western Hemisphere. Kicking off the unit of study, Mrs. Willis guided the students in utilizing World Book Online to research several Latin American countries, while Ms. Laude chose songs and dances from each country for the students to learn. Mrs. Piche and Ms. Laude helped the students learn
the songs in Spanish. At the conclusion of the unit, the students hosted parents and other family members for Latin American Appreciation Day on May 20th. Singing songs such as José-Luis Orozco’s “Que Llueva” and dancing Los Machetes, a folk dance from Mexico, the students entertained the crowd before gathering together to enjoy authentic Latin cuisine.

The club began four years ago when Ms. Luckey brought the idea to the school. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Ms. Luckey. “Walking is a lifelong activity that can help keep everyone
healthy. The kids have a great time.” Student participants are rewarded for their commitment to the club. According to Ms. Luckey, students who attend five times receive small prizes such as a Walking Club bracelet, while students who attend 10 times have their photo added to the club’s hall of fame.

Meet Your Neighbor! It all began back in 1976. Our country was going through a terrible recession. Our local economy was devastated. At this time, founder Vincent Costello was forced to close his air conditioning and heating contracting business. Looking for a means to support his wife and 10 children, Vinnie stumbled upon a business opportunity, a retail hardware store. Originally opened 1973, it was a small, neglected, under-stocked store of barely over 2,000 square feet located in Deer Park. With no previous retail experience and no other options, Vinnie courageously embarked on a journey that few would ever have dared. Sales were dismal and the store was in desperate need of attention. He worked every day for 5 years and managed to make the store profitable. While most would have been satisfied with this miraculous feat, Vinnie was determined to grow beyond that one small store. By refinancing his home, he opened a second location in 1982. This 5,000 square foot industrial store was also located in Deer Park, on the other side of town.
In 1988, another opportunity arose. A shopping center was being constructed in the little-known town of Nesconset. It wasn’t the most populated area, but Vinnie had lived there for over ten years and he thought that the residents of Nesconset would respond well to a neighborhood hardware store. Did they ever! The 4,000 square foot store was an instant success, managing to be profitable from the day it opened. Over the next four years, the success of that store helped fuel the expansion of the company to larger stores in Farmingdale and Central Islip. During those early growing years, his children worked in the business and contributed to its success. Their dad taught them the importance of taking care of the customers. “Treat them like family,” he would say. He taught them how to solve their problems and how to learn from them. Most importantly, he taught them that the most sacred bond between them and their customers is trust. In 2001, with Vinnie’s encouragement and guidance, six of his children opened a 25,000 square foot store

in Bellmore. This store was the size of all of the other locations combined - it was huge! It seemed impossible to find enough products to fill it. It took some time, but eventually they had a successful home center. This hardware/home center concept has continued over the past nine years in Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage, New Hyde Park, Island Park, Centereach, West Islip, North Massapequa, Northport, West Babylon, Garden City Park, Smithtown, East Islip, Rocky Point, Great Neck and Copiague. a LICADD Clinical Team member to determine the anger management issues and the reasons that the client seeks anger management help. During the anger management assessment, the agency assesses for signs or symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, mental health disorders, trauma, physical and sexual abuse, legal involvement, domestic violence, substance abuse and dependence issues. New classes for a oneday session begin on June 21st, July 26th and August 23rd. Clients can choose between the onetime eight-hour course or the 12 sessions that meet weekly. In each, clients have an opportunity to identify their triggers, and practice practical, effective strategies for processing and controlling their emotions. Individual anger management
sessions are offered in cases where a client is uncomfortable in a group setting. Upon completion of the class and/or course, participants receive a certificate as proof of their progress. “For many clients, anger and the difficulty they experience in dealing with conflict, has threatened their personal and professional relationships. We want every participant to learn successful coping skills for managing their anger,” explains Anger Management Coordinator Marcie Siciliano, “we provide the education and resources for our clients to deal with stress in healthy ways.” The fees associated with the Anger Management services are minimal and competitive. The assessment fee is $40 and an additional $40 per class each week. For individuals attending the one-day
eight-hour session, the fee is $199. Participants can purchase the Anger Management Resource guide for $40. Those on Medicaid or Employee Assistance Program (EAP) clients are eligible for a reduction in fees. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) offers an eight-hour Anger Management Class for adults seeking to learn skills to manage conflict, stress and anger. The course is offered monthly in LICADD’s Mineola office, and complements the agency’s 12-week Anger Management Program that meets in Ronkonkoma on Monday evenings and Mineola on Tuesday evenings. Joining The Ranks Of The Alumni
With every passing day, I become more aware of my surroundings. I try to pick up on the fleeting aspects of life. From the beginning of my high school career, people told me that the four years would be gone before I knew it. They made sure that I was aware that high school is the best time of one’s life. From the first moment I walked into St. John’s, I knew that it would be a place with the power to shape my life. My mannerisms, persona, outlook and mentality have all been influenced by SJB. Each year, on Alumni Career Day, I would
stare in awe at the past graduates, and commend their accomplishments. Now, as a graduate, I am following in their footsteps and going out into the world. Some of my peers will go on to do big things. While I was sitting in that auditorium of 397 other teens, I couldn’t help but to speculate on which kid would become the author. Who would become the politician? Undoubtably, there are movers and shakers within my graduating class. I can only hope that I am one of them. There is no telling what the members of my class will do with their

Immediately after the Holy Trinity graduation ceremony, Jonathan Trencheny of Rockville Center was surprised with a check for $180,000 presented by Petty Officer Obiem of NRS Hicksville, which will allow Mr. Trencheny to attend any college fully paid for by the Navy. Mr. Trencheny enlisted in the Navy and as a result of his scores on the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Exam), he was selected to be a part of their prestigious nuclear program. After he
completes the 18-month boot camp, which begins this summer in Charleston N.C., the Navy will fully fund his attendance at any college he is accepted to. After completing college, Mr. Trencheny will be a naval officer and will serve in the Navy for four years. Mr. Trencheny had no idea why Petty Officer Obiem was attending his graduation and was taken by surprise with the presentation after the graduation ceremony had ended. “I am ecstatic about this opportunity – it has been something I have

Cultural Society Award Levittown’s MacArthur High School students Brianna Abatelli, Mary Cervantes, Clare Del Grosso, Amanda King and Alex Philbin received certificates of merit in the Irish Cultural Society of Garden City’s annual writing contest. In addition, Cervantes was a second-place winner.
The five students’ essays were selected from the submissions of 425 talented writers from 24 schools across Long Island. Sponsored by the H.W. Wilson Foundation, the writing contest required participants to write a dialogue between two characters in James Joyce’s “A Painful Case.” Not only
were the students required to demonstrate their writing skills, but also an understanding of the depth and context of Joyce’s work. Principal Kathleen Valentino congratulated the students on their achievements and wished them continued success in their writing.

Celebration Of Art Several hundred works featuring top studentartists from Wantagh High School and Wantagh Middle School were on display during the district’s annual Art Festival. Many of the photographs, drawings, paintings and sculptures were previously selected for exhibitions and scholarships across Long Island, including the Art Supervisors Association All-County exhibit, the Long Island’s Best Young Artists Exhibition at the Heckscher Museum, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest, the Long
Island Arts Alliance Scholar Artists Program and more. In addition, Advanced Placement students were on hand to describe and answer questions about their individual galleries. Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts Kelly Good described the quality of work being displayed as gallery-worthy. “The teachers are phenomenal in what they have been able to pull out of their students within their own artistic expression,” Ms. Good said. Art teacher AmySue McPartlan described the
works of the students as a “labor of love.” Ms. McPartlan also described the festival as a forum that displays the versatility of the students, especially in the works of the Advanced Placement student-artists. Musical entertainment by the middle school orchestra and high school percussion ensemble not only punctuated the tone of the Art Festival, but allowed students, faculty and residents to take a closer look at the district’s music program.

Top Honors The East Meadow School District hosted its end-of-year district awards ceremony on June 9th, where students from Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools and East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in
various competitions this school year. Superintendent of Schools Louis R. DeAngelo, central administrators, Board of Education members, and faculty and staff from the middle and high schools were on hand to congratulate students on their achievements in art, athletics, business,
creative writing and poetry, journalism, math and science. As their names were called in their respective categories, the students lined up on the risers and were officially recognized. The district congratulates these students on a successful school year.
