Well, it’s happened. Still days away from the official start of summer, and already the first utterings of “it’s too hot” have been heard. After one of the most bitterly cold, snowiest winters on record, one that seemed to stretch on far past its allotted time, and we can’t even appreciate the warmth for more than a day. What is it that makes our society so…unsatisﬁed? We live in one of the most ideal climate zones where we are fortunate to experience all four seasons for equal periods of time throughout the year. And yet, other than the occasional universal

comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint. Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time. Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to

fireworks…the options are endless. The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you. Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer. Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

COMMENDING COMMUNITY LEADERS - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray presented Levittown residents Joseph and Andrew Toscano with town Certificates of Recognition for leading efforts to install a stop sign near their home to combat speeding. Murray was also joined by Joseph and Andrew’s parents, Joseph and Marie; sister, Lauren; grandparents Bob and Joan Schmidt; and Ela, Matthew, Ania and Karolina McCarthy.

GOLD STAR HONOREES - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray paid tribute to U.S. troops who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Gold Star Families Remembrance of Our Fallen Heroes Ceremony on May 30th. The event was held at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Murray was joined by Tatyana Fuentes of Levittown, Nancy Fuentes of Levittown, Armando Fuentes of Levittown and Emily Toro.

For the fourth consecutive year, Woodland Middle School has been named a No Place For Hate School by the Anti-Defamation League. No Place For Hate is an ADL initiative that offers students, teachers, administrators and family members the opportunity to work together to enhance a culture of respect in the school community. Participating schools complete various activities and projects to promote unity and reduce bullying, name- calling and other expressions of bias. Woodland Middle

School has continued to successfully implement anti-bullying, anti-bias and diversity education as an integral part of its curriculum. Woodland was selected as a winner of this designation from among schools from the five boroughs, Long Island, and Westchester County. As a result, the school was awarded a Gold Star banner for its exceptional commitment to the program. “ W e are extremely proud to receive this distinguished recognition,” said Woodland Middle School Principal James

Lethbridge. “We work diligently to emphasize the importance of being respectful and understanding of others and embracing diversity. The goal is to ensure that our students remain productive, respectful citizens in society. Make A Difference Day

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Gary Hudes presented an official Town of Hempstead Make A Difference Medal to Mildred Bowman of Levittown on the occasion of the 2015 Make A Difference Award ceremony, which was held at the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion at Town Hall in Hempstead. Mildred Bowman, who is 91 years-young, is well-known to teachers,

administrators and students at the East Broadway Elementary School in Seaford. For more than 43 years, Millie has worked as a lunchroom and playground monitor always greeting students and faculty with a smile and cheerful greeting. While Millie is known for her upbeat spirit, she runs a tight ship, and makes sure that no student feels left out at lunch or recess. She easily

diffuses confrontations, watches out for instances of bullying, and intervenes to assist students who are experiencing difficulties. Millie has also been active in the American Legion for over 40 years, serving on the Board of Directors and as Past President of the Woman’s Auxiliary. Additionally, Millie was a dedicated volunteer at Nassau University Medical Center.

Gift Of Music The East Broadway Community Service Music Groups shared their gift of music with residents of the Atria Huntington assisted living facility. Music teacher Christine Conte’s father, George Pappas, is a resident there and one of the many seniors who enjoyed the students’ performances. Members of the Community Service Music Groups’ band and orchestra performed their New York State School Music Association pieces and the choral students, under the direction of teacher Susan Pokalsky, performed “On the Radio,” a dramatic review of music

spanning from 1920 to the 1980s. In addition to musical performances, the student council provided gift bags for the seniors, and teacher Valerie Kovel donated spring plants she acquired through a grant. The Community Service Music Groups have performed for the community for several years. Each year, music teachers Barry Titone and Jennifer Mazza also prepare Community Service Music Groups’ instrumental ensembles to be performed at various venues. The group meets once a week during lunchtime. The Community Service Music Groups perform

during the holidays at assisted living facilities, senior centers, the Broadway Mall, Long Island MacArthur Airport and the Levittown tree lighting ceremony. In the spring, the group performed at local senior facilities and previously collaborated with the Rosemary Kennedy School during their spring performance. They have been invited to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Long Island Ducks game, and regularly perform on the lawns of students who are recovering at home from an extended illness.

This May, to celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month, Winthrop Avenue School Speech-Language Pathologists Darleen Foley and Farah Augustover, celebrated event with many exciting activities. To create awareness and provide the broader school community with knowledge, a large bulletin board hung in the front lobby of the school with fun facts and information depicting the different

aspects of hearing, speech and language. Additional facts were also read during the daily morning announcements. All classroom teachers received packets that included information on speech-language pathologists, how to keep a healthy voice while teaching and how to ensure their classrooms foster better listening, speech and language skills. A letter to the students’

The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce John C. McNamara as the new assistant superintendent for instruction, effective July 6th. Mr. McNamara joins Wantagh from the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District, where he served as the middle

school principal for the past six years. Mr. McNamara has also worked as an assistant principal in the Harborfields School District and as a social studies department chairperson for Island Trees Middle School. Currently, he serves as executive board secretary for the Nassau County Middle Level Principals Association. He began his educational career as a social studies teacher. “We are very excited to welcome Mr. McNamara to our administrative team,” said Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg. “He brings with him a wealth of educational

knowledge and experience with respect to curriculum and instruction that will benefit all stakeholders within our district. We believe he will be a great asset to Wantagh.” Mr. McNamara holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Providence College, a master’s degree in liberal studies with a concentration in social studies education from Stony Brook University, and school district administrator certification from Touro College. Triathlon Registration When the Town of Hempstead Triathlon raced onto the scene 31 years ago, it was a one-ofa-kind event, a competitive trendsetter that helped inspire the popularity of today’s Triathlons. A compelling test of skill and endurance, the town Triathlon is contested along the beautiful ocean shoreline and through quaint seaside communities. Entry applications for the 2015 Triathlon on Saturday, September 12th are now available by calling the Department of Parks and Recreation at 516.292.9000, extension 7219 or visiting town parks and sponsor locations. “An exciting combination of swimming, biking and running, the 2015 Triathlon is set for 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12th at Town Park Point Lookout,” according to Supervisor Kate Murray. Set along the beautiful beachfront at Town Park Point Lookout, the Triathlon begins with a hearty three-quarter mile ocean swim. After emerging from the surf, competitors set off on a ten-mile bike through the streets of Point Lookout and Lido Beach. The final leg of the Triathlon is a five-mile run to the finish
