During the annual speech/essay contest, the students were required to write an essay that answered the question, “When did you first understand the importance of Memorial Day?” The three top essays were chosen from each class. The winners received a certificate from the English department and were invited to walk in the community’s Memorial Day parade, which was canceled this year due to severe weather.

School of Character Levittown’s Salk Middle School has been recognized as a National School of Character, one of 68 schools nationwide chosen by Character. org. According to Character.org, formerly known as the Character Education Partnership, the middle school has clearly demonstrated that character education has had a positive impact on academics, student behavior and school climate. In February, a Character. org representative interviewed members of the school’s R.I.S.E. Program committee, students and staff after the

school learned that it was being considered for this honor. The R.I.S.E. Program, an in-house character education program based on the tenet of respect, stands for respect, integrity, safety and staying healthy and empathy. The R.I.S.E. program has evolved over the past decade and now includes all members of the school community, including administrators, teachers, support staff, students and parents. Assistant Principal Patrick Mulligan, chairman of the school’s R.I.S.E. committee, explained that the student body is taught daily to embrace

each other’s differences and to treat others with kindness. He said that the R.I.S.E. program should not be confused with an anti-bullying program. “Instead, it is a program that teaches students the right way to behave and treat people,” Mr. Mulligan said. Salk Middle School will keep its status as a National School of Character for the next five years. Members of the R.I.S.E. committee will also travel to Washington, D.C. on October 14-15 to be honored at the National Forum on Character Education.

MAGNA CUM LAUDE - Lathan J. Sebastian Otalora just might have the fastest hands at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. On June 4th, he put his skills to the test at a Cube4Cam event, where he manipulated the rainbowcolored Rubik’s Cube to help raise money to combat childhood cancers.

“Sebastian has a passion for the Rubik’s Cube and is ready to demonstrate his talents for a good cause,” Principal Dr. Taryn Johnson said. At the event, Otalora participated as a competitor, and a judge/ reviewer for others. His best time was 26 seconds, and he ranked No. 76, out 150 participants. This is

gardening decreased the stress hormone cortisol and restored study participants’ mood. “I applaud the Rosemary Kennedy students for their kindness in bringing our Bellmore seniors plants and vegetables to grow in their garden,” said Councilman Hudes. “On behalf of the Bellmore Senior Center, I would like to express our gratitude for the students’ visit and for their thoughtful gifts,” concluded Councilwoman King Sweeney.

Shakespeare Festival The question was to be or not to be and students at the Meadowbrook Alternative Program in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District held the answer as they performed in the sixth annual Shakespeare Festival. Under the direction of English teacher Laura Sheridan, the festival incorporated the combined talents of students and staff. It began in the Brookside Auditorium with

scenes and monologues from “Julius Caesar,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “The Merchant of Venice,” “Romeo & Juliet,” “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” “Troilus & Cressida” and “Antony & Cleopatra.” An elaborate feast followed the performances where Elizabethan dishes were provided by staff members. Decorations were prepared and coordinated by school nurse Darlene Boden and

assistants Karin McMahon and Lisa Duignan. “In preparation for the festival, a number of MAP’s student body took a field trip to see the Young Company’s performance of ‘Othello’ at Classic Stage Company near Union Square,” said English teacher Laura Sheridan. “Experiencing a live performance of Shakespeare gave them perspective and inspiration for their own scenes.”

District Celebration Several hundred works featuring top studentartists from Wantagh High School and Wantagh Middle School were on display during the district’s annual art festival, held in the high school gymnasium on June 1st. Many of the photographs, drawings, paintings and sculptures were previously

selected for exhibitions and scholarships across Long Island, including the Art Supervisors Association All-County exhibit, the Long Island’s Best Young Artists Exhibition at the Heckscher Museum, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest, the Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar Artists Program and more.

In addition, Advanced Placement students were on hand to describe and answer questions about their individual galleries. Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts Kelly Good said, “It is fascinating to see the culmination of a year’s work and what was created. Every year the bar is set higher.”

Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino handed over the reins to a student for a day as part of Students in Government Day 2016, on Monday, May 23rd, while nine other students from throughout the township will be sworn in as department heads and called into duty during a mock severe weather scenario. “Well over three years has passed since Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on communities throughout the Town of Hempstead, but the path of destruction is still evident with homes being repaired and beaches opening for the summer season,” stated Supervisor Santino. “As Hurricane season is about to commence yet again, this program is a great opportunity for 11th grade

government students to experience first-hand how government responds during times of crisis.” By working through a mock hurricane scenario, the students learned how closely all town departments have to work together in order to best service the residents in an emergency. The scenario featured a hurricane headed straight for Long Island. Students interacted in their various roles to protect the safety and wellbeing of town residents in the midst of the weather crisis. The real department heads guided them throughout the day. Students from the following schools participated in the mock severe weather scenario: Division Avenue High School, Elmont Memorial High School, Garden City

High School, Hewlett High School, Kellenberg Memorial High School, McArthur High School, Mepham High School, Sewanhaka High School, John F. Kennedy High School, and Valley Stream South High School. Students reconvened for a final emergency management meeting where they each provided a brief update of what transpired within their department. Afterward, they had a question and answer session with Supervisor Santino and council members. “These students are all learning about government this year, and Students in Government Day is a truly hands-on lesson for them,” concluded Supervisor Santino.

The girls track and field team had a goal in mind and did whatever was needed to accomplish that, ending the regular season as the Nassau County Division 2A Champions. I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a flourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to flip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through

the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your influence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.

Northwell Health Relocates Northwell Health has relocated its Long Island headquarters to a 100,000-square-foot building at 2000 Marcus Avenue in New Hyde Park. The leased building is home to about 300 employees within Northwell Health administration, including executive leadership and the health system’s strategic planning, legal, marketing and communications, managed

care, patient and customer experience and corporate security departments, as well as the Northwell Health Foundation. The three-story building consists of 33,000-squarefeet of garage space and 4,000-square-feet of conference space, including a conference center that can accommodate 275 people and is outfitted with integrated audio visual technologies,

including a 30 foot wide video wall broadcasting Northwell Health and Event information. Other amenities will include a café operated by Unidine with a special focus on healthy choices. As a culmination of their work this year, seniors at East Meadow High School presented their senior projects to fellow classmates, administrators and faculty. Members of the Class of 2016 engaged in a reallife experience through an internship or community service placement over the course of the academic year. As part of the initiative,

students completed a minimum of 25 hours in their placement, recorded monthly hour logs and wrote a research paper about their experience. The seniors volunteered their time in a variety of vocational fields, including animal care, business, education, health and law. When presenting at the senior project fair, students discussed what they had

Future Prep learned and how the experience might impact their future as they begin their postsecondary plans. The district would like to congratulate the students for their dedication and diligence and express its appreciation to the East Meadow High School faculty, staff and administration.

SHED THE MEDS - Senator Michael Venditto recently partnered with the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, the Community Parent Center, the Nassau County Police Department and other elected officials to hold a Drug Take Back Day where residents could safely dispose of their expired, unwanted medications. The program was held at Merrick Avenue Middle School in Merrick. Approximately 900 pounds of medications were collected for safe disposal by the Nassau County Police Department.

Barry Tech is dedicated to connecting its students to career-related work experiences for credit. Division Avenue High School in Levittown celebrated the accomplishments of the Class of 2016’s top students during the annual Senior Awards Night on June 7th. The seniors received awards and scholarship monies as their parents, Levittown staff and administration and community watched with great pride. Principal Joan

Lorelli said recognizing the students for their achievements is the best part of her job. “Your children are remarkable – they work hard, dream big and share good fortune and goodness with others,” she said to the parents. “Your encouragement, support and belief in the priority of a good education is integral to your child’s success.”

During the ceremony, staff and curriculum associates bestowed department awards and special senior awards, while individual community members and organization representatives honored recipients with scholarships. In addition, valedictorian Jessica Vasseghi and salutatorian Kristin Schmidt were formally acknowledged.

Mastering Principles Bellmore-Merrick School Central High School District students enrolled in the Prep for Life special education program at Sanford H. Calhoun High School displayed their mastery of 2-D and 3-D art during an art show for an appreciative board of education and administration. For the past two years,

the students have worked with teachers Nancy Scott (Art I) and Heather Lohr (Art II) on developing a portfolio of works including animal portraits, impressionist landscapes, free form sculpture, opposite op art, past to present pop art and relief sculptures. These finished products were not only displayed on hand, but

were presented in the form of a digital portfolio. “The students transitioned so well from 2-D to 3-D art and digital work and will now have digital portfolios to take with them,” Ms. Lohr said. “None of this could happen, however, without the support of the district and the students’ families.”

East Meadow’s team of nine business students competed against 20 teams from 13 Nassau County high schools at the Theodore Roosevelt Legislative and Executive Building in Mineola in this year’s challenge, titled “Start-up Nassau.” During the competition, which is specifically

designed for high school business students, each team presented a business plan and prototype that could benefit local universities and Nassau County to a panel of judges. The panel was comprised of entrepreneurs, community leaders and Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos. As competition winners, Energym received $2,500, provided by HAB Bank, for their business plan to manufacture and market a device that stores bicycles’ kinetic energy to power

electrical devices. Toni McIntosh, chairperson of the high school’s business and technology education department and adviser to the team, congratulated the students on their impressive accomplishment. “A job well done to these students for placing first in this prestigious competition, as this was only our second time entering since it began in 2012,” McIntosh said. “I am beyond impressed with how well they did.”

Jimmy Flinn from the Levittown-Island Trees Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9592 visited the school. Mr. Sanchez and Mr. Flinn brought war artifacts with them for students to examine. They discussed which war each artifact was

from, how it was used and the progression of military technology to better suit military personnel. Following the presentation, the students were able to get a closer look at the artifacts and try on helmets, gas masks and tactical vests.

Board Prez to Retire Skip Haile, president of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Board of Education, will be retiring from his post as of the close of the 2015-2016 school year. “He has been instrumental in establishing programs and scholarship, devoting countless hours working to improve the quality of our programs and has

consistently supported and encouraged our students to raise the bar academically and artistically,” said Vice President Janet Goller at the June 1st board meeting. Haile has served as a trustee, as well as president on the North Merrick School Board and the CHSD board for the past six years. He is an accomplished businessman, acclaimed

soccer player and has been actively involved in Merrick PAL and a travel soccer board. “Above all, he is a family man, demonstrating unwavering love and devotion to his wife, Sheila, and their two sons, Nick and Cole,” Goller added. “He will be greatly missed by the Bellmore-Merrick community.”

Working Environment In the spring of 2006, a committee of administrators, teachers, parents and students at John F. Kennedy High School developed a senior program to offer alternative learning opportunities to graduating students towards the end of their senior year. This program, known as the “Senior Experience Program,” is currently entering its 10th year. Participants have three weeks of release time during the last three weeks of the school year. This period of time is dedicated to their chosen project or internship; students are expected to spend time at their placement equal to the time that they spend at school. This year, more than 215 seniors are participating in the program at Kennedy High School. Students are in a variety of fields that range from engineering to communications, and medicine to graphic design, and are working in offices from Hauppauge to New York City. “The success of the program relies on the commitment of the students, the monitoring of each student by a faculty mentor, and the generous support of our community sponsors who are willing to work with our students and give them an enriching and educational experience,” said Principal Lorraine Poppe. “From their experiences, many of our students begin to change or develop future plans. Others merely enjoy sharing their talents or commitment to service with others. The

program has truly become part of the Kennedy culture, and students look forward to being part of Senior Experience.” A few of the students are interning at law firms on Long Island and in New York City. “I’ve learned how the judicial system functions,” said student Ashley Jarzabek. “I’ve also learned many terms

Students like Alex Dobosh are also focusing on the legal field; however, Alex is interning in a courthouse rather than a law office. He is at the New York State Supreme Court in New York City. “I have learned a lot about the court process…sitting on trials is different,” Dobosh said. “It’s pretty crazy how the legal world works.” Dobosh also noted how he has been able to apply some of the skills he learned in Mock Trial to this experience. Student Elizabeth Lau said she is enjoying her experience working at Bellmore-Merrick Pediatrics. “At the pediatric office, I work with other staff, patients and parents. Instead of learning at a desk, I’m learning from handson experience,” she said. “I definitely prefer working at the office more. This is definitely more interesting and engaging, and I really feel like I learn a lot more. I also love being able to interact with people directly.” All students in the program write a daily journal entry, which is reviewed by the student’s mentor.
