is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this non-profit. They truly believe mental health is as important as physical health. MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this motorcycle, poker run and car show will benefit at-risk and homeless veterans of the Suffolk County United Veterans Project. All who attend will receive breakfast and the chance to win prizes throughout the day. The entry fee for motorcycles and cars is $20; for walk-ins, it is $5 and for children under 12, it is free. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. The Anti-Defamation League has recognized Wantagh Middle School as one of the nation’s 1,600 No Place for Hate schools. This prestigious designation was accomplished through the sponsorship of activities that promote acceptance, tolerance and kindness on campus and by sending a clear message throughout the school that all students have a place to belong. In order for a school to be considered a No Place for Hate school, the school must complete a needs assessment, form a No Place for Hate committee, sign a Resolution of Respect and design and implement at least three schoolwide anti-bias or antibullying prevention activities. The Greatest Honor “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” ~ Douglas Adams As I sat in the audience at the recent Press Club of Long Island awards ceremony last week, intently listening to the words of one of our Hall of Fame honorees, the legendary writer and reporter Harvey Aronson, I was struck by the notion that one could choose a particular career to pursue and, so many years later {at the tender age of 89}, remain just as devoutly passionate about it. As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant. In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of
decades to the pursuit of teaching his craft to the next generation. Though I wasn’t fortunate to be enrolled in one of his classes myself, I certainly had my fair share of stellar professors through the years, some whom I reflected upon as I soaked in every word spoken by this fascinating man as he stood before the assembled crowd of media elite.

Teachers, parents and students in the East Meadow School District connected over the book, “Fish in a Tree,” during the #EMeadowReads Twitter chat on June 2nd. Joining them was the author of the book, Lynda Mullaly Hunt. The theme of the event, “One Book, One East Meadow” was organized by Parkway Elementary School Principal Jamie Mack and Director of Literacy Frank Lukasik. The online forum allowed people inside and outside of the district to log in from anywhere, and on any device to discuss the novel. No one was required to read the book, but the interest was very high. GLIMPSE OF HISTORY - Second-graders at Summit Lane Elementary School visited the Levittown History Museum at the Levittown Memorial Education Center on May 25th to uncover the history behind the town they live in. Museum docents Irene Metzler and Geri Raab facilitated the special visit by walking students through the museum which featured community donated items displayed to represent a Levittown household. Change for Change, the service learning club at W.T. Clarke Middle School in the East Meadow School District, held its annual Giving Ceremony on May 25th to honor and benefit a number of charitable organizations. Students of the club started the school year by holding meetings to research and select 13 nonprofits that held significance for one or more of the club’s members. During the course of the year, the club worked tirelessly to raise funds through various events and initiatives, culminating with a ceremony in the school’s auditorium to present those funds. Eleven of the 13 foundations were represented at the ceremony, with the other two sending along thank-you letters. This year’s selected charities were the Lustgarten Foundation, the school’s own Giving Tree, March of Dimes, Food Allergy Research and Education, the Lupus Foundation of America, the Long Island Crisis Center, Sunrise Day Camp, the Ronald McDonald House of Long

Each organization was then introduced and welcomed by selected students and, following a brief speech, awarded with a plaque of recognition and a donation check. Among the donations was a special contribution to the Lustgarten Foundation, a pancreatic research organization, in memory of John Boyle, former dean of students and head football coach at W.T. Clarke High School. Mr. Boyle passed away a few weeks prior to this event following his battle with pancreatic cancer. Change for Change has been in existence for 13 years, with advisers Katie Pienkos and Ashley Sanalitro leading the initiative for the last four.

Reading Buddy Golden doodle Mojo and his Pet Partners volunteerowner Susan Benyo sat quietly in the Wantagh Elementary School library as kindergarten students each read a page of their favorite book to their canine reading buddy. Some of the students received an approving nuzzle with a cold wet nose, while others were happy to read and talk to
Members of Wantagh’s Boy Scout Troop 96 and Venturing Crew 577 were off to Pennsylvania this past weekend for a a fun filled adventure. They camped at Achahela Scout camp in Blakeslee, PA. On Saturday, May 19th, between the planned municipal dam release and the torrential rains, the Lehigh River at White Haven, PA, crested to Class
IV rapids per Whitewater Challengers, the rafting outfitters. OtisJohn did indeed say the added challenge made this ‘One of the best/ most exciting excursions ever.’ The 1st raft carried Boy Scout Troop 96 members Rory, Justin, James, Michael, Julian, OtisJohn, and Mr.Reidy. The second raft held the Venturing Crew 577 members

Mojo and Benyo are volunteers with the Pet Partners Read With Me Program and teamed up with Wantagh’s Bideawee animal rescue to make students more comfortable with their reading. “This program is another way to get children to form a love of reading,” Benyo said.

Rafting Adventure
The Read With Me Program offers students the opportunity to read with a therapy animal, providing an incentive and motivational tool for the students to succeed at this important skill. Therapy animals are non-judgmental listeners, making students comfortable with literacy skills, such as reading out loud.

Poetry with Sounds A poetry unit in fifthgrade classes at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District expanded into music, as well. Led my music teacher Amy Yencharis, students read and listened to different Haiku poems by several authors, then explored different sounds that complimented the
poems. Working in groups, the children created their own Haiku poems about nature. They reflected on the best ways to incorporate sounds into their original works and thought hard about which instruments to select. The students presented their poems for their parents and siblings during a pair of performances
on May 17th and 18th. Parents also received poem anthologies featuring works that students wrote throughout April, which was National Poetry Month. Each class published its own book, with every student having a full page of his or her original poems.
Yearlong Project Starting in September, the senior class at East Meadow High School embarked on a yearlong journey designed to further prepare them for life after graduation. The objective of this journey – the senior project – is to actively engage students in “real-world” experiences by having them either participate in an internship or undertake a community service effort. This project also serves to foster compassion, creativity, citizenship and confidence in students as they enter the workforce, college and society, all while gaining positive,
hands-on experience with community professionals. The first semester consisted of resume and interview workshops to ready the seniors for the next step, which was to complete at least 25 hours of experience in a chosen activity. Beginning with the resume process, students identified areas of interest, applied and reached out to sponsors for their internships or community service work. They fleshed out this experience during the second semester, and they recorded their progress by logging their daily hours and activities.
The journey culminated on May 25th with a Senior Project Fair, where the students visually demonstrated their experiences, lessons learned and contributions through project boards. With only a few months before starting their own senior projects, the junior class was tasked with reporting on the event by conducting interviews with the presenters. Coordination of the project was led by teachers Danielle Casamassina, Sheena Jacob and Kimberly LoFaso of the business, English and social studies departments respectively.

Cooking School Visit
On May 3rd, Denise Schleith’s eighth-grade French class from Merrick Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District revisited the food unit with
a trip to A La Carte cooking school in Lynbrook. Students learned about French cuisine and different cooking techniques. “The students worked
collaboratively in small groups to prepare a French meal which included appetizers, entrée and dessert,” Schleith said.

Abbey Lane Elementary School students had the unique opportunity to learn circus skills during a week-long residency with Ray Grins and his wife Erin Grins from Cirque Du Jour from May 21st-25th. Sponsored by the Abbey Lane PTA, the circus kicked off the residency with a performance for all grade levels which was followed by two instructional days for each class during their physical education periods. Students learned a variety of circus skills such as juggling with colorful
scarves and balls, using their hands and arms to do tricks with a devil stick, walking on stilts and concurring balance by spinning plates on a stick. Mr. and Mrs. Grins walked each class through proper techniques and allowed the students to get hands on with the circus equipment. “You only fail if you stop trying,” Mrs. Grins told Abbey Lane third-graders before they tried juggling and working with the devil sticks. Mr. and Mrs. Grins walked around the
gymnasium during the physical education classes to help students hone their skills. The Cirque Du Jour residency allowed for the students to try something new and build their selfconfidence along the way. “My favorite part about having the circus here was learning how to use the devil sticks and doing the plate spinning,” said thirdgrader Bianca Recine. “I learned that it’s hard and it takes some practice but it’s very fun.”
Sustainable Sounds The PTA Cultural Arts Committee for Chatterton School in Merrick recently sponsored arts-ineducation assemblies that combined environmental awareness with the art of making cool music. Entertainers from Bash the Trash, an organization that performs and educates students with musical instruments
made from reused and repurposed materials, brought their show of science, music and environmental awareness to Chatterton. Their assemblies incorporated STEAM lessons on engineering, music and the environment. Students learned about the families of musical instruments, how the instruments work,

and how to make their own instruments from recycled and reused materials. Then it was showtime, as Bash the Trash performed a concert using their instruments. Students clapped along to the beats generated by their presenters, as science and music came together in a fun and interactive way.
A Big Dig artifacts on school grounds and each team was tasked to dig up another team’s artifacts. After retrieving the artifacts, students brought them inside the classroom for further study in the “APEX Archaeology Lab,” where they pieced together information about that particular culture. Each team also created a mural and a language system to provide details about their culture to assist their counterpart team in learning more about their culture. “Students learned how to dig like an archaeologist,

Thirdand fourthgraders enrolled in the Merrick School District’s APEX program recently participated in a dig as a culmination of their unit on archeology. Students representing each of the district’s three schools worked together in teams to create artifacts that represented a fictitious culture they developed by incorporating their knowledge of economics, family life, recreation, food, clothing, shelter and religious beliefs. APEX teacher Robin Harris then buried the

Calhoun High School, both in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District, were recently selected for a 2018 Achievement Award in Writing, given by the National Council of Teachers of English. Mepham AP Language and Composition teacher Marc Achtziger encouraged Isabelle and fellow student Nicole Farina to enter the local contest. A panel of English teachers evaluated all of Mepham’s entries anonymously and
unanimously selected Isabelle and Nicole to move forward. “Both are gifted writers and hard workers,” said Achtziger. Farina received a Certificate of Nomination to recognize her success at the local level. Isabelle received a Certificate of Superior Writing. Maldonado was also a second-place winner as a sophomore last year in the Long Island Language Arts Council’s Gambone Writing Contest which is a writing contest that emulates the NCTE national contest and was
recently inducted into Calhoun’s National English Honor Society. “Faith has proven herself to be a lover of language who is able to communicate a unique, humorous voice in her creative writing,” said English Chairperson Kim Serpe. The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. Only students who are juniors may participate.
Design a Card Helen Yao, an eighthgrade student at Wantagh Middle School, was a top 10 winner in the Long Island Design-A-Card Contest, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Her design will be made into notecards to raise scholarship money for the Judy Abrams/Margaret Fernandez National Examinations Scholarship
Fund. Additionally, Sarah Amadio and Christina Patmanidis were competition quarter finalists, while Nicholas Aldino, Anthony Anzalone, Savannah Barreira, Brooke Bellia, Arielle Combs, Alicia D’Costa, Julia Inayan, Kiera Udell and Tarika Varanasi received honorable mention awards. Participation awards were
also distributed to Jessica Bohlert, Bryn Griffin, Caroline Wiffler and Jerry Wiffler. The contest drew hundreds of entries from public and parochial school districts and entries were judged on originality and uniqueness of design, artistic quality and representation of Hispanic and Portuguese culture.

A monetary School District donation of $1,000 was also submitted along with the donation of the goods in the bus. After filling one bus, students created a human chain from the second floor of the school, through the stairway and out the main entrance to produce
an assembly line to “stuff” a second bus. The two buses, along with a third bus of students, staff and remaining donations, were transported to the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park for unloading. Now in its second year, the “Stuff a Bus” fundraiser is spearheaded by the school’s National Junior Honor Society. Last year, the society decided to focus the school’s collective efforts on benefiting one charity. Woodland’s service clubs and organizations responded by donating within a specific category of need, such as cleaning
supplies, disposable products or pantry items. The clubs held individual fundraisers to collect the necessities or to raise funds to purchase the products themselves. Parents, faculty and community members also contributed by dropping off donations in the school lobby’s collection bin throughout the year. The district extends a special thank you to all donors and to the Guardian Bus Company for graciously providing their services.
