The Kiwanis Club of Merrick honored one graduating senior from each of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District schools at the Club’s 52nd annual Student Recognition Night on May 14. Each of the students selected by their respective principal, was chosen on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular and community service activities, and outstanding character. This year’s recipients were: Matthew Alexander of Meadowbrook Alternative Program – MAP, Caroline Casella of Sanford H. Calhoun, Ali Cheema of Wellington C. Mepham and Sidra Naheed of John F. Kennedy. At the dinner, the honorees were introduced by the principals, who described and praised the achievements and accomplishments that led to their selection for this prestigious award. In their acceptance remarks, the students shared what their high school careers have meant to them, beyond the academics that will take them on to college next fall. Kiwanis member Dr. Nancy Kaplan, a school board trustee, spoke on behalf of Superintendent John DeTommaso, who was unable to attend. She offered a heartfelt and insightful assessment into what makes a school – and a school district – successful, citing the caliber of educators and support that produce students like those being honored. She also delivered the superintendent’s praise and thanks for Kiwanis’s efforts in the community, citing the support for the Community Food Bank at MAP that serves more than 60 local families. The students also received Citations from County Legislator Steve Rhoads and Proclamations from State Sen. John Brooks. Kiwanis is a service organization for individuals desiring personal involvement in the leadership and improvement of their communities.

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.
date TBA) they will be hosting their 6th Annual Designer Handbag Bingo! This is a great night of food, drinks, bingo and the chance to win fabulous handbags! Your admission ticket will include 10 rounds of bingo, food and drinks. Additionally, they will be holding their 2nd Annual Heroes for the Homeless 5K Walk/Run on Sunday, November 3rd at Eisenhower Park. This is a great opportunity for anyone to come out and walk and or run to support New Ground! Last year’s event was a huge success and they are looking forward to an even bigger and better turnout this year!
Based in Levittown, New Ground offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.
This organization is also in need of additional volunteers to help out in various areas. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.
New Ground hosts various special events throughout the year. In September (exact

council secretary, fifth grader Keira Quigley, brought up the idea of a night where families could come together and play games while giving back to others. From here, the “Unplugged Night” was born. “The Make-A-Wish Foundation is one of my favorite charities,” said Quigley. “I really love board games and card games, coloring and bingo so I thought it would be a lot of fun to do.” For a suggested donation of $2 a person or any donation of their choice, students and their families could join in the
fun. They rotated between the cafeteria, library and gymnasium where different games were set up. Attendees colored, played card games, board games and even bingo where prizes were handed out. The games were donated by those in the school community and after the event, were donated to classrooms for indoor recess. It was a successful evening which not only raised money for the MakeA-Wish Foundation, but allowed families to come together for a relaxing and enjoyable bonding experience.

Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!
The rain did not keep Abbey Lane Elementary School students, staff and families away as the Abbey Lane Student Council hosted its first “Unplugged Night” to raise money for the MakeA-Wish Foundation on May 30. Together, the school community raised approximately $200 for the foundation which gives back to children battling illnesses. Led by co-advisers Vicki Bartolomeo and Lisa Wenz, the school’s student council raises money for a variety of noteworthy causes during the school year. Student

It was a blast from the past as seniors from Division Avenue High School and General Douglas MacArthur High School in the Levittown Public Schools returned to their former elementary schools to walk the halls for one last time on May 30. This was the first year that the Levittown Public Schools initiated a Senior Walk to celebrate the graduating seniors from both high schools.
Throughout the day, students and staff lined the hallways at all six elementary schools in the district, holding signs to cheer on the soon-to-be graduates. The seniors arrived off their buses and were warmly greeted by building principals, their former teachers and enthusiastic young students who will one day walk in their shoes. They received hugs and high fives as they made their

It was a lovely day.” Seniors Journey Back - Lee Road Elementary Schools students cheered on seniors from MacArthur High School who previously attended Lee Road. Shore Road School student-musicians in the Bellmore School District displayed their musical talents and skills during the school’s annual spring concert on May 23. For all of the students, the concert was an opportunity to show how they have improved during the school year, while sixth graders took the stage for the last time during their elementary careers. The concert featured the orchestra, chamber orchestra, symphonic orchestra, fifthand sixth-grade choruses and band. Under the batons of orchestra director Kelly Brandstadter, choral director Laura Itskovitz and band director Jennifer MacVicar, the studentmusicians performed a variety of classical and popular tunes to the delight of family and peers.
