Alzheimer’s Disease & Hearing Checks Continued From 3 have shown that although a significantly higher percentage of people with Alzheimer’s disease may have hearing loss than their normally aging peers, they are much less likely to receive attention for their hearing needs. “A comprehensive hearing assessment should be part of any Alzheimer’s diagnosis and any hearing loss should be addressed,” says Kent. “By addressing the hearing loss, we can help improve quality-oflife for those who have Alzheimer’s and help them live as fully as possible.” Numerous studies have linked untreated hearing loss to a wide range of physical and emotional conditions, including impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks, reduced alertness, increased

risk to personal safety, irritability, negativism, anger, fatigue, tension, stress, depression, and diminished psychological and overall health. Long Island Hearing is urging caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s to also address their own hearing health—recognizing the negative impact that untreated hearing loss can have on their own quality of life and emotional well-being. Caregivers can determine if they need a comprehensive hearing check by a hearing professional by taking a free, quick, and confidential online hearing test at www. hearingcheck.org. The Best & The Brightest By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists. This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the

magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge. This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees. To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments. It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin

with, to pursue a career that many seem to frown upon, for considerably less money than other, far less impactful, careers. Crazy, right? Not when you step back and take stock of a crowd like that, on a night like that, and realize that, yes, it’s all worth it. Congratulations to all the winners, once again. I can only hope that, one day, I will be fortunate enough to stand among you. ‘Til then, I consider myself extremely lucky to be a mere observer, soaking in the inspiration from those who have come before me.

Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest singleday food drive, an annual event in association with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC),

United States Postal Service and food banks across the country. Locally, all proceeds benefit Island Harvest in supporting more than 300,000 Long Islanders — including 110,000 children — who face the risk of going hungry every day. for those struggling with hunger. “Island Harvest is pleased to see so many of our neighbors here on Long Island who stepped up and generously donated 326,365 pounds of food for those who often don’t have enough food to maintain a healthy life,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “We are especially grateful to the NALC and the U.S. Postal Service for their efforts in helping Stamp Out Hunger in our local communities.” In addition to the generous donations, a total of 440 Long Islanders volunteered from various businesses and communities to help

I like to think that I have made a positive difference on this team - and maybe I have - but the opportunity to compete on the highest stage available was earned

Rowing Toward A Championship

This weekend, I am competing in the National Championship for rowing. As the culmination of four years of hard work, this regatta marks the end of my rowing career. Although I started as a very poor athlete, I grew to love the sport. Now, I’m representing St. John the Baptist in the Varsity Quad, along with three of my best friends. I’m also competing in the Varsity Pair. This year proved to be one of the most productive in recent years, as we have six boats competing in this national championship. With so many entries, I believe we have put St. John’s on the map, as a force to be reckoned with

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray has announced that members of the town’s Creative Writers’ Workshop will be holding a reading of their original works on Wednesday, June 11th from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Merrick Theatre and Center for the Arts. “The senior residents who have participated in the Creative Writers’ Workshop will be sharing their compositions with the community during this presentation,” said Murray. “The life experiences, imaginations and emotions of workshop participants have served to inspire the writers to compile these short stories, poems and memoirs.”

For the third consecutive year, teams from the W.T. Clarke Middle School seventh-grade honors science research program in the East Meadow School District have been named semifinalists in the Christopher Columbus Awards competition. The nationwide competition invites middle school students to identify a community issue, conduct research and propose a solution. Thirty semifinalist teams were selected from hundreds of entries submitted from across the nation. The first group of students, The Triclosanators, focused on the dangers of triclosan — a chemical commonly found in household items, including acne cream, soaps and toothpastes.

Team members included Mustaf Dervisi, Kaywan Javdan, Eshan Shakrani and Makaeel Sheikh. During their research, they learned the East Meadow School District has consciously not purchased products which contain triclosan for a number of years. The students created a website, designed posters and implemented a public service announcement on Rams Live. In addition, they created and tested their own triclosan-free soap and wrote to companies, such as Procter & Gamble, asking to remove triclosan from their products. The second semifinalist team, The Plastic Patrol, included students John Barry, Megan Delaney and Henry Qi. The team identified the issue of ocean and bay pollution

due to garbage and waste being disposed of in storm drains. Students designed and tested a more efficient storm drain model to address garbage buildup. They also worked with Operation Splash, an environmental organization, to adopt four storm drains in Westbury. Working with Operation Splash, the team stenciled “Drains to Ocean” by the four drains to encourage residents to responsibly dispose of trash and waste. The science research program at Clarke Middle School is co-taught by seventh-grade science teachers Donna Delvecchio and Wendy Wansor and English teacher Cindy Dale. The district congratulates these students and teachers on this achievement.
