The History Of The Graduation Cap
clerical clothing because the church was highly influential at this time. Medieval universities helped inspire academic dress, including the familiar graduation cap. Mortarboards are shaped like a square, perhaps to give them a scholarly appearance like a book or to represent the shape of a quad on the campus of England’s Oxford University, where many graduation dress customs are believed to have originated. Others theorize that the mortarboard, which is named after the flat board used by bricklayers and masons,
represents the skill of a master workman. Many graduation caps were initially black or gray. According to the graduation information site Graduation Source, when color photography became the norm in the 20th century, schools began to use gowns and caps in different shades because they would show up in photographs. Schools often coordinate caps and gowns so their colors reflect their official school colors. While certain degrees warrant different styles of gown, cowls and hoods, mortarboard caps are relatively standard. In addition to the cap, there is a single button at the top. Tassels hang from these buttons. At commencement, tassels are traditionally worn on the right side of the cap and then moved to the left once graduates receive their diplomas. Graduation caps are part of the larger scope of academic dress that comprises school traditions. Millions of graduates across the globe will don their caps and toss them into the air later in celebration of their hard work.
When the novel coronavirus COVID-19 struck the world at the end of 2019, few people anticipated just how much the virus would upend daily life in the months to come. Because there currently is no cure or standardized treatment for the disease, the best course of action has involved maintaining social distance to help cut down on the rate of spread. Social distancing has changed the way the public shops, interacts socially with friends and family members and attends school. For the thousands of students comprising the class of 2020, social distancing also changes how they will graduate. Graduation decisions are something high schools and colleges have grappled with in the face of social distancing. Graduation has become a modify-asyou-go model in many towns and cities. In some instances, all in-person ceremonies have been restricted and virtualonly graduations will take place. For example, New Jersey’s Department of Education was only allowing virtual graduation events as graduation season approached. Other parts of the
country have been approaching graduation plans in various ways. The Tucson Unified School District postponed its graduation ceremonies to late June rather than canceling them altogether. Schools in Spotsylvania and Fauquier Counties in Virginia held modified versions of in-person ceremonies in May, which limited the number of family members in attendance and required relatives to hand out diplomas as a safety precaution. Students in Cherry Creek School District in Colorado found out they will have a modified inperson, students-only graduation ceremony in July. Relatives can watch the ceremony on a live stream. The Army will proceed with this year’s graduation ceremony at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in June, with President Donald Trump giving the commencement speech for cadets. The 1,000 cadets will return to campus to attend the ceremony, which will include procession changes and other social distancing modifications in line with current health requirements. Whether a school hosts a graduation ceremony in-person
or not, families can organize their own at-home graduations. All relatives who are graduating (whether from high school, college or even those moving up from fifth grade to middle school and eighth grade to high school) can participate. Here are a few tips: • Pool resources to borrow the right number of caps or gowns from friends or family. • Play “Pomp and Circumstance” over a bluetooth speaker. • Have the graduates march around the perimeter of a yard or down a neighborhood street. • Ask a relative to give a keynote speech. • Take graduation photos outside of the school doors or on campus where allowed. • Cater a graduation luncheon or dinner from a favorite neighborhood eatery. • Employ all necessary safety precautions, such as seating guests six feet apart from one another and wearing masks. Graduation ceremonies have changed due to COVID-19, but graduates can still commemorate this milestone moment in their lives.

Even though the Fourth of July, a holiday in which the flag is prominently and proudly displayed, had long been celebrated as the birthday of the United States, Cigrand wanted a holiday that would focus specifically on the flag in all its glory. June 14 was selected because it marked the anniversary of the official adoption of the first flag. Cigrand led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday, and throughout his life continued to advocate for respect of the flag. Various other organizations liked the idea of a day to honor the flag, including the State Board of Education of New York, the Betsy Ross House and the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution. Yet, it wasn’t until May 30, 1916, that Flag Day was officially established by presidential proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson. Still, it would take another 33 years for President Truman to sign an Act of Congress designating June 14 as the
official National Flag Day, which he did on August 3, 1949. Americans can honor the flag by displaying it on Flag Day. Here’s how to display the flag properly, courtesy of Military.com. • The flag should be free of any obstructions, such as power lines or tree limbs. • If displayed with other flags, Old Glory should be at the top-most point or in the center of a horizontal array of flags. • If the flag is displayed on its side, the blue field should be to the left. • The flag should be raised in the morning at a residence or business and taken down at night. The only exception to the flag being out at night is if it’s illuminated. • Flags can be repaired. However, if a flag is tattered, it can be removed and brought to a local VFW hall to be properly disposed of. Flag Day honors the Stars and Stripes, a symbol of the great American nation.

The American flag is a symbol of the country’s history, pride and success in overcoming political oppression. Through its many incarnations and variations, the Stars and Stripes has waved over government buildings, schools and private residences. According to History. com, in 1775, the Second Continental Army led to the creation of the first “American” flag. However, that flag was too similar to the British Union Jack flag, George Washington requested a revision. In 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that the “flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white.” Furthermore, the “union” was represented by 13 stars of white in a blue field, “representing a new constellation.” More than a century later, a small-town Wisconsin teacher named Bernard Cigrand came up with the idea for an annual flag day in 1885.

Hempstead, Lawrence and Seaford will be open to the public on weekdays between the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. through June 1st. The drive-thru payment booth behind the Receiver of Taxes office is open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All offices will be closed Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day. These locations can only accept payments made by check or money order. The new deadline for residents to pay their second half 2019/2020 school tax payments was extended until June 1, 2020 through Executive Order by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The extension for taxpayers came after Supervisor Clavin, Receiver of Taxes Driscoll, and other local leaders requested the deadline be extended in light of the economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for. Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!” Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need. One way we can start is by donating food, clothes, shoes, blankets, socks or any other important items to Eileen for her to distribute. She visits homeless individuals twice a day and any donations received will be handed out to those in need. Additionally, Eileen is looking for a donation of a mini-bus (can be used). This bus would be used for her non-profit traveling salon and her outreach work for the homeless. If you or someone you know can make this kind of donation, please reach out to Eileen directly. Bright blue skies and warm temperatures were the backdrop for an afternoon of revelry as Wantagh High School teachers lined the school’s driveway with their decorated cars to host a car parade for the Class of 2020, held on May 15. Everyone who attended practiced social distancing, but the spirit and joy of graduation season still resonated as each of the seniors passed through the tunnel of cars to the honk of horns and shouts of congratulations from faculty and administration. Senior class adviser Alex
Grange, who planned the end-of-year event with teachers Heather Naughton and Sean Naughton, explained that the teachers wanted to make the day special, especially since senior activities have been canceled or modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We wanted to see the kids and tell them how much we love, support and miss them,” Ms. Grange said. Students were encouraged to decorate their cars with balloons, signs and information about the college they will be attending in the fall. The students also wore
their college shirts to celebrate the next chapter in their lives. Many of the students were driven by family members and some were even accompanied by the family pet. “This parade was completely teacherdriven,” Assistant Principal Nick Pappas said. “They wanted to create a way to say goodbye to the seniors, who have been a part of the district for the past 13 years. Nassau’s Public Libraries Announce Digital Library Card shared resources of the member libraries of the Nassau Library System, including ebooks, digital magazines, study support, and continuing education for children and adults. Wantagh Introduces the 2019-20 Valedictorian and Salutatorian Wantagh High School announced Travis Minutoli and Athena Yao as the Class of 2020’s valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Keeping with Warrior tradition, the students were congratulated during the morning announcements, and while accompanied with parents and faculty, took an official photo in front of the school sign as it flashed the good news. “Enjoy the moment and the year to come, because this is a special year for both of you,” Principal Carolyn Breivogel said. Travis is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and is enrolled in the district’s rigorous AP Capstone Program. He is a trustee of the National Honor Society, treasurer of the World Language Honor Society and a member of the Science Honor Society. A musician, Travis excels at playing both the saxophone and clarinet and is not only a member of the school marching band, but secretary of the Tri-M music honor society. His extracurricular schedule also includes membership in Mathletes and the Italian Club and a position as co-captain of Science Olympiad. Travis also gives back to the community through service in the Key Club. During senior superlatives, Travis was voted “most likely to succeed.” Athena was recently designated as a National Merit Scholarship Winner and is a National Advanced Placement Scholar, having received an average score of 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Like Travis, she is enrolled in the district’s AP Capstone Program, is tutoring coordinator for the National Honor Society, a member of the World Language Honor Society and president of the National Art Honor Society. She recently garnered the Congressional Art Award and the Scholastic Art and Writing Award, and is Team A captain of the Science Olympiad team and a Key Club trustee. Athena co-founded the school’s Minds Matter Club, a social-emotional and mental health awareness forum, and is varsity captain of the girls cross-country team. She is also director of art for Girl Genius Magazine and a teaching assistant at the Long Island School of Chinese. Even more impressive is Athena’s Junior Academy membership with the New York Academy of Sciences, where as a member of an international team of students, garnered the grand prize at the Regeneron and Medidata Genomics Challenge. Two students from General Douglas MacArthur High School in the Levittown Public Schools were recognized in the 2020 Roger Rees Awards Program for their exceptional performances in MacArthur High School’s production of “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Senior Jake Schauder was presented with the Best Actor Award, while sophomore Cassidy Baltazar earned the Up and Coming Actress Award. The Roger Rees Awards Program recognizes outstanding student performances and achievements in high school musical theatre. To be considered for a prestigious Roger Rees Award, registered schools from across the New York
area submit two students to represent their musical production. Due to the pandemic, the student performers were asked to submit an audition video this year which was then evaluated by professionals in the theatre industry to determine the top 25 female and male nominees. The winners were announced during an online awards presentation on the Broadway Education Alliance YouTube channel. During the virtual ceremony, Schauder expressed how special this recognition was. “Cassidy Baltazar is my best friend,” he said. “We’ve been doing theatre together through all of my years in high school and I think being a part of this together has just solidified
that even more and it has been such an unforgettable experience to go through with her. I don’t think I’ll ever forget this time we shared together.” Lisa Levenberg, MacArthur High School music teacher and drama director, has watched the two students shine on stage since they were in middle school. “It’s been a joy to watch them both grow and develop their talents over the years,” she said. “They are both so deserving of this honor. They put their all into every role they perform, and it is a joy for me as a director and teacher to work with them.
