Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area.
Valhalla is 34’ long 12’ 3” wide, a very stable boat that has plenty of room for both wheelchairs and passengers with a wide transom door and a hardtop enclosure for protection from the elements.
With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Seniors Sign On Four exceptional Division Avenue High School senior-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their sports on the college level this fall. Softball player Amanda Bridgwood will join Marywood University’s softball team, while Darian Caputo will play softball at Cabrini College. MaryEllen McCarthy has also committed to play lacrosse at Caldwell University, and Kiernan McLaughlin is headed to Adelphi University to play baseball. In addition, Aaron Giles-Jeffer has signed to join the swim team at Adelphi University. Tickets Anyone? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. The instant the Jones Beach schedule was posted, I eagerly scanned it for shows I wanted to see, and then scoured the internet for any special pre-sales, Groupons, etc. that I could find. The problem – well, a temporary inconvenience, as the case may be – is that some summer tours seem to be announced earlier each year and, while there are plenty eager to attend, few people are willing, or able, to commit to such expenses in the middle of Christmas shopping. Me, I ignore such … what’s the word … logic? Rather, I
am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate
goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

COMPTROLLER’S ACHIEVEMENT - Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos congratulated Ashley Irabor of Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville on her receipt of the Comptroller’s Achievement Award for excellence in economics and finance. Winners of the Comptroller’s Achievement Award have an opportunity to apply for a paid summer internship in the Comptroller’s Office during their college years. Annual Art Show their own creative side. “This show is a labor of love and the culmination of a year’s worth of work and collaboration between talented students and teachers,” art curriculum associate Frank Creeter said. “Beyond applying a medium to a surface, or simply satisfying an art assignment, students inevitably learned that art communicates, evokes emotions and can serve as an outlet for otherwise ineffable ideas.” Many of the photographs,
sculptures, drawings and paintings were selected for exhibitions and scholarships across the region, including an All-County exhibit, Long Island’s Best, and Advanced Visions 11: High School Artists of Excellence. In addition, the art show showcased a technology and engineering component with demonstrations by students enrolled in the Project Lead the Way Program.
District Celebrates Art Several hundred works featuring top studentartists from Wantagh High School and Wantagh Middle School were on display during the district’s annual Art Festival. Many of the photographs, drawings, paintings and sculptures were previously selected for exhibitions and scholarships across Long Island, including the Art Supervisors Association All-County exhibit, the Long Island’s Best Young
Artists Exhibition at the Heckscher Museum, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest, the Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar Artists Program and more. In addition, Advanced Placement students were on hand to describe and answer questions about their individual galleries. Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts Kelly Good described the quality of work being displayed as gallery-
worthy. “It is fascinating to see the culmination of a year’s work and what was created,” she said. “Every year the bar is set higher.” Musical entertainment by the middle school orchestra and high school percussion ensemble not only punctuated the tone of the Art Festival, but allowed students, faculty and residents to take a closer look at the district’s music program.

FAMILY PROJECT - Grand Avenue Middle School recently held its end-of-year celebration for this year’s Family Project. The Family Project is in its 39th year as a recreational and educational program for improving communication skills through various activities for the special needs students within the Bellmore community. Interim Superintendent
The East Meadow Board of Education is pleased to announce that Leon J. Campo has been named interim superintendent of schools for the 2015-2016 school year, following the resignation of current Superintendent of Schools Louis DeAngelo. Mr. Campo’s appointment is effective July 1st, 2015. Mr. Campo is a familiar face to East Meadow, having worked for the district for 35 years, most recently as superintendent of schools. He has extensive experience in the education field and has held a variety of teaching and administrative positions throughout his career. A resident of East Meadow, Mr. Campo is involved in the greater community and is a member of a variety of organizations, including Kiwanis and the Chamber of Commerce. “On behalf of the entire Board of Education, I am pleased that Mr. Campo will be returning to the
district to lead us during this time of transition,” said Board President Joseph Parisi. “Mr. Campo’s long history with the district and familiarity with our community, administrators and staff make him the ideal person to serve as interim superintendent. I know I speak for the entire board when I say we look forward to working in partnership with him on behalf of our students.” “I am pleased to be returning to East Meadow in the capacity of interim superintendent,” said Mr. Campo. “I thank the Board of Education for having the confidence in me to serve in this role and I look forward to working with them over the next year to lead our district in a transparent manner. I welcome the input of the community and look forward to working with them as well as we continue to move the district forward. Most of all, I look forward to
continuing the great work that has been done in terms of expanding opportunities for our children.” While Mr. Campo will not officially assume the duties of interim superintendent until July 1, he will begin to meet with administrators, staff, parent organizations and community groups over the month of June. “One of my top priorities over the next month is to meet with as many staff members and community groups as possible,” he said. “I want their input as to what our district is doing well and where there is room for improvement.” Beginning this summer, the Board of Education will conduct a thorough search for a permanent superintendent of schools. There will be opportunities for community input throughout the process and information will be shared with residents as the process unfolds.
Art On Display Students, parents, faculty and administrators recently gathered at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center for the district’s annual art show, which showcased the creative
talents of East Meadow students. Hundreds of guests viewed student work, including drawings, paintings, graphic art, architecture and carpentry
projects. Participants received certificates of recognition for their fine artwork. The event made for a festive celebration of student talent throughout the district.

Top Mathletes During Salk Middle School’s Mathletes breakfast, several students were honored for their exemplary skills during the 2014-2015 season. Eighth-grade student Saajid Chowdhury received a plaque for placing third in the Nassau County
Junior Mathlete’s League, having earned a total of 25 points for the team. In addition, seventh-grade student Tyler Noboa was the recipient of the Elmer Heinecke Award for sportsmanship, leadership and team spirit. The Mathletes season
extended from November to March, where five competitions were held at Salk Middle School. Hearing Set
On Thursday, June 11th, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Wantagh High School cafeteria, the Wantagh School District will hold a special public hearing to present a plan for the use of “Smart Schools” funds that have been allocated to the Wantagh Schools for technology and security. wide enhancements to security and wireless infrastructure. The Smart Schools Act, approved by the voters last November, authorized the release of funds to school districts for State-approved plans to provide access to classroom technology and high-speed internet connectivity to equalize opportunities for children to learn, to add classroom space to expand highquality pre-kindergarten programs, to replace
classroom trailers with permanent instructional space, and/or to install high-tech smart security features in schools. School districts may submit their plans to the State via an online application portal that will open on June 15th. All district residents are invited to attend the hearing. Wantagh High School is located at 3297 Beltagh Avenue, Wantagh.
More than 100 Wantagh High School seniors were recognized for outstanding achievements during the annual Senior Awards Night held in the school auditorium. This cherished tradition recognizes the student’ overall academic accomplishments, community service, extracurricular involvement and abilities
to overcome obstacles during their four years of high school. During the ceremony, the students received approximately $20 thousand in scholarship money from local community businesses and organizations, as well as special honors from government officials. Principal Carolyn Breivogel congratulated the students on their
years of dedication and enthusiasm to academics, sports, the arts and community service and thanked the teachers for their commitment to education. To the students, she said, “You always hear me say that your name is your most prized possession, and your names will be called this evening.”
Terrific Kids
W.T. Clarke and Woodland middle school students received Terrific Kids awards in recognition of their positive attitude, good character and responsible citizenship during March, April, May and June at the district’s May 28th Board of Education meeting. The Terrific Kids program is sponsored by the East Meadow Kiwanis Club, which recognizes students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade and presents them with certificates of achievement. W.T. APPOINTED AS OFFICER - East Meadow student Leeann Turrisi, who attends Nassau BOCES Barry Tech to study veterinary science, was elected as a National Officer during the State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships, held in Syracuse last month. She will represent New York State as a National Delegate at the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, KY this June. As a National Officer, Leeann will attend a number of training sessions that will prepare her to serve as a member of the National Officer Team at the June conference.

The Long Island-based credit union NEFCU has awarded 82 students from high schools across Long Island each with a $500 voucher to use toward their college education, as part of its annual Making a Difference Scholarship program. In total, NEFCU granted $41,000 to graduating seniors from local high schools across Long Island. The individual winners will be announced in June at their respective high school’s scholarship award ceremonies. Each participating high school’s guidance department selected one graduating senior of its choice based on a minimum four-year average of 90%, as well as service to his or her community and school. Since the Making a Difference Scholarship program’s inception more than 10 years ago, NEFCU
has awarded more than $1,000,000 to Long Island high school and college students. In addition to meeting the academic qualifications and outstanding service to both their school and their community, each student must attend a two- or fouryear college or university after graduating this spring. Winners of the Making a Difference High School Scholarship are eligible to apply for NEFCU’s Premier Making a Difference Scholarship, a $20,000 scholarship (paid over four years) offered to recipients of NEFCU’s High School and Family Scholarships to help fund their college education. Police Trip A trip to the Nassau County Police Department’s open house in Mineola proved fascinating for Christine Torrellas’s Forest Lake Elementary School students, who watched officers rappel off of a three-story building and
climb into an ambulance. The Wantagh students pet a police horse and met the officers’ canine partners, and then attended a Jaws of Life and biking demonstration. Although all of the demonstrations and experiences were exciting, the favorite
activity of the day was a visit to the jail cells. The Forest Lake Elementary School students and staff thank the Nassau County Police Department for hosting such an information event.

Artwork Showcase Several hundred works featuring MacArthur High School’s most dedicated and talented artists were on display during the school’s annual Art Show, which not only took a closer look at the works of the best and the brightest artists, but which encouraged peers to explore their creative side. Curriculum Associate for Art Frank Creter said this show was particularly successful in that there were more installation pieces, an expanded Advanced Placement Art section, and the exhibit of some happy accidents, such
as the large colored cubes at the show’s entry. For the first time, the art show included demonstrations from the district’s Project Lead the Way science technology, engineering, and mathematics program and use of the 3D Printer. “This show is a labor of love and the culmination of a year’s worth of work and collaboration between talented students and teachers,” art curriculum associate Frank Creeter said. “Beyond applying a medium to a surface, or simply satisfying an art assignment, students
inevitably learned that art communicates, evokes emotions and can serve as an outlet for otherwise ineffable ideas.” Many of the photographs, sculptures, drawings and paintings were selected for exhibitions and scholarships across the region, including the All-County exhibit, Long Island’s Best, PTSA Reflections, Advanced Visions 11: High School Artists of Excellence and New York State Sen. Kemp Hannon’s Best in Town exhibits.

Voices From The Holocaust Wisdom Lane Middle School students attended a stellar and emotional performance of Theatre Three’s “From the Fires: Voices of the Holocaust.” The students have been studying World War II and the Holocaust, so the educational program brought to life many of the events studied in the social
studies curriculum. “From the Fires: Voices of the Holocaust” traces the life of the fictional Berlin teenager Rachel Gold and her experiences from 1937 to 1945, touching on the Nuremberg Laws, her deportation to Auschwitz and the death march to Mauthausen. With limited props,
the characterization of Rachel, her friend, her father and members of the community drives home the atrocities experienced by Jews during this dark historical period. The actors also held a question and answer forum after the performance.

Shark Tournament Star Island Yacht Club has announced that it will hold its 29th Annual Shark Tournament on June 18th-20th. This annual Father’s Day event has become a Montauk tradition and a major happening, with over 100 boats participating annually, drawing thousands of spectators. Cash prizes will be awarded for the heaviest shark in the tournament and the heaviest shark for each day. The top three prizes will also be
awarded for the heaviest mako, heaviest blue shark and heaviest shark of another species. In addition to this outstanding competition, all sportsmen can contribute to the study of the shark by tagging and releasing sharks that do not meet strict weight requirements. In 2014, more than $485,000 in cash, prizes, and trophies were paid out. Over the course of two days, 117 boats and 702 anglers brought in 33
fish, including ten Makos, 14 Threshers and nine Blue Sharks. The heaviest shark was a 377-pound Thresher landed by Ed Groppe aboard Captain David Walters’ “The Reel Deal.” Of the sharks that were weighed in, more than 750 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches’ food pantry to help feed those in need. The entry fee is $1,250 per boat. For sports
fishermen who would like to get in on the competition but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for either one day or both days of the tournament. Each of Star Island’s boats can accommodate up to six anglers. Star Island wishes to advise all prospective participants that, as per Environmental Conservation Law 130338, New York State
law now requires that all shark tournament participants use nonstainless steel non-offset circle hooks exclusively. Dockage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Transient rates for the tournament are $5.50 per foot for up to 59 feet, $6.00 per foot for 60 feet and up. Utilities are $30 for 30-amp and singlecord 50-amp service and $50 for two-cord 50-amp service. In addition, Star Island now has highspeed fuel pumps.
