POW/MIA CHAIR DEDICATION - On Sunday, May 30th, 2021, a memorial service was held at Huntington Town Hall, for veterans and the dedication of the POW/MIA chair that was purchased and donated by Dr. Cynthia Paulis to a gold star mom Charlee Miller whose son was killed 15 years ago in Afghanistan. Ms. Miller is the director of The Art League in Dix Hills. Her son Col. Joseph Fenty was killed in a helicopter accident and never got to meet his newborn who was 20 days old. The chair will be on display permanently at The Art League in Dix Hills. Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the
late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

Supervisor Clavin made the announcement in partnership with Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne Sr., Councilman Tom Muscarella, Councilman Chris Carini, Town Clerk Kate Murray and Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll. The town’s media sponsor is KJOY 98.3. “When many local municipalities were postponing or cancelling programs during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town of Hempstead was creating innovative options for our residents
to enjoy recreational or entertainment options,” Supervisor Clavin said. “The Drive-In Movies series was one of the town’s most popular programs in 2020 and early 2021 and we are happy to bring back it back for another run for the enjoyment of the residents of America’s largest township.” The fun movie marathon will take place at Town Park Point Lookout (1300 Lido Boulevard Point Lookout). Monthly Community Beach Clean-Up Days Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and Councilmembers Dorothy Goosby, Bruce Blakeman, Anthony D’Esposito, Dennis Dunne, Sr., Thomas Muscarella, Chris Carini, Town Clerk Kate Murray and Receiver Jeanine Driscoll are joining with Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMSEAS), and All Our Energy to host monthly community beach clean-ups at town beaches from May to September. “We had a very successful beach clean-up in April and would like to continue our success through the summer,” said Supervisor Clavin. “We love involving the community so they can all see how much we accomplish by working together. Pollution is a serious problem, and this is a good way to make the public see it for themselves while doing something about it.” Lindsey Reisz, Education Coordinator for AMSEAS, said, “Cleaning up our marine environment is at the core of our organization’s mission to promote marine
conservation through action. We enjoy hosting opportunities like this so participants can get out in their environment and make a positive impact by removing debris before the items make their way into our waterways and potentially harm marine life.” Join the Town of Hempstead for a beach clean-up. Volunteers can sign up for a one-hour time slot, and there is a maximum of 30 participants per time slot. Clean-up supplies will be provided, but it is recommended to bring your own gloves. “Waste ends up on our beaches every day. This event is a great way for our residents to come together make a difference,” Goosby said. “After their hour of volunteering, people can see for themselves how their hard work contributes to keeping our beaches beautiful and our environment safe,” Blakeman added. We couldn’t get together much this past year, due to COVID, so it’s wonderful to
see people coming together again, while social distancing and listening to safety guidelines,” D’Esposito said. “People like to give back to the community and learn about the environment, this is a nice way to do so,” said Dunne, Sr. “Our spring event was such a success and we want to keep that momentum going,” Muscarella said. “We look forward to having people attend all future events as we clean up our beach,” Carini added. be holding a Line Dance event on the farm itself. For only $25/person, you can join Skip and the Country Rhythms Team for a fun afternoon of dancing, food and a raffle. All dances will be taught; you can arrive as early as 1:30 PM and dancing starts at 2 PM. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM starting June 12th running through October 10th! You will find organically-grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and it’s mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to find out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. Additionally, they suggest volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipients can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. Currently, this farm has various upcoming community events planned! On June 13th and September 12th, they will

Levittown Council Honors Three Outstanding Students Levittown and Island Trees middle school students were recently honored as Junior Volunteers of the Year by the Levittown Community Council. First place winner was Julianna Ryley, who attends Wisdom Lane Middle School. Runners up were Meaghan Campbell, a student at Jonas E. Salk Middle School and Julia Soto, who attends Island Trees Memorial Middle School. Ryley, an eighth grader, was cited for her work with local organizations including Levittown Kiwanis Builders Club, Levittown Library monthly book reviews, Levittown Community Action Coalition’s educational substance use prevention forums and Levittown Community Council’s Earth Day cleanup. Her self-initiated project of making red, white and blue military hats for soldiers was a big success and her book collection project resulted in making a library in a children’s hospital in Queens, NY. As a Girl Scout and an officer of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), she he has worked with many area organizations including Long Island Cares, Pet Pantry, Forgotten Friends, Last Hope Shelter, Book Fairies and Island Harvest. Julianna was sponsored for the Junior Volunteer award by Levittown School District Social Worker, JoAnn Medina, who wrote: “Julianna is dedicated, caring and focused when it
comes to creativity, ideas, volunteering; making positive differences in others’ lies…. she has a generous, kind heart.” “Meaghan is very responsible and always willing to lend a helping hand,” wrote Builders Club advisor Kim Welsch about runner-up Meaghan Campbell, a seventh grader at Salk Middle School. Meaghan, a peer tutor, has held the positions of Secretary and President of the Builders Club, participated in beach clean ups, organized a food drive and coat drive for local people in need and a Winter Jamboree raising money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Meaghan served as 7th grade representative for round table discussion on school-wide issues and for the character education program. She has donated her hair to help create a wig for a person with cancer, and participated in a DVD collection and project making cards for soldiers overseas and children in hospitals with cancer. In addition, in a recruitment effort, Meaghan brought in 20 new members to the Builders Club last year. Island Trees seventh grade student, Julia Soto, was sponsored by Island Trees Middle School Principal Daniel Keegan, who wrote: “Julia navigates many social circles with great dexterity and care. She seems to be a friend to all and demonstrates kindness and respect toward all.” A Girl Scout, Drama Club members,
softball and soccer player, Julia baked, cooked and sold fresh cinnamon honey butter treats as a fundraiser with all proceeds going to Smile Train, an organization that helps children with cleft care and treatment. Julia has also worked diligently to organize and promote a holiday card and letter writing campaign to recognize the work of and honor front line workers in a Holidays for Heroes campaign. Keegan wrote, “I have no doubt that Julia Soto will continue to leave a strong and powerful mark on the Levittown community and beyond.” The first place winner received a monetary award from Sterling Bank, which was presented by Manager, Christine Sweeney. Other winners received monetary awards donated by Levittown VFW Post 9592, presented by Commander Peter Stasinski and Hicksville Elks presented by Steven Stubbs. New York State Senator Kevin Thomas presented the honorees with a certificate and each of the students were each presented with certificates by local legislators. The Community Council’s certificate commends the winners on their volunteer work and states, “Your efforts and acts of kindness are an example of the spirit the Levittown Community Council wishes to encourage in residents and those who have a stake in our community.”

“The Big Three” of World War II will make an appearance at this year’s World War II Encampment Weekend, June 19th and 20th, at the Museum of American Armor inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, Long Island. Beside an operational array of Allied and enemy armor, interpreters who portray President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Britain’s Winston Churchill, and Soviet Russia’s Stalin will greet visitors and remind them of the extraordinary alliance that confronted and defeated Nazi Germany. Members of the Long Island Living History Association will also present uniforms, tactics, and weapons of that era. Armor Museum president and founder Lawrence Kadish, observed, “Our continuing
mission at the Armor Museum is to bring history to life so that a new generation of Americans understand that the precious gift of freedom was bought and paid for by the sacrifice of those who came before us.” Armor Museum trustee, former U.S. Congressman Peter King, stated, “Living history has become an essential part of keeping our nation’s heritage alive and relevant at a time when online platforms have created a virtual alternative universe for too many of our young people. To see these vehicles operate in the field opens a journey of study and education for many of our visitors.” The Armor Museum’s Senior Trustee, Michael Sapraicone, noted, “World War II Weekend is designed to remind Long Islanders that they have heroes in their families. That medal in
the back of the dresser? It was for your grandfather’s valor. That fading honorable discharge certificate? It was won on a far off battlefield. And the freedoms we enjoy? That’s the legacy they have left all of us.” Families will be admitted only with pre-reservation e-tickets
