Representing Sanford H. Calhoun High School In Merrick

The annual James C. Metzger Leadership Award for Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse was presented to one player on each of the eight teams that competed in the finals of the 2022 Section VIII Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse championships. Each award recipient reflected the tenacity, honesty, commitment and positive attitude required in Nassau lacrosse. Each player also possessed the ability to inspire others

on and off the field. One of the eight award recipients is senior attack Alexander Vieni of Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick. He is committed to Towson University in Maryland. The lacrosse championships were held on Tuesday-Thursday, May 31-June 2,at Hofstra University. In the Class B championship game, Garden City High School defeated Calhoun 12-5. The awards were presented by 1970s Long

Island lacrosse star James C. Metzger. A three-sport athlete at Half Hollow Hills East in Dix Hills, Metzger received the 1977 Lt. Ray Enners Award for outstanding Suffolk County lacrosse player when he scored 102 points and received All-American honors. An All-American lacrosse player at Hofstra University, Metzger is the founder and chairman of Whitmore – The Agency, an insurance and financial services firm in Garden City.

Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting Nabs Several BASH Awards

The award winning submissions can be seen on the BMB YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UC02KdyXGoyUouNNohkccdFQ and they include “Silver Linings” for community news, a story about the unintended benefits that the stay at home period brought, a movie trailer produced by senior Luke Melfa won for Most Entertaining. Morning Announcements stars senior Ava Scheffler and Haley Hepworth won for Best Anchor Team and the Morning Announcements team under the direction of Yucht and Sean McQuillan won for Best Broadcast. Yucht’s exploration of school newspapers took home the third place prize for Best School News. BMB counselor Jaclyn Kratzer and new addition to the BMB team credited the energy that all the students bring to the program. “They are all so engaged and into this program,” she noted. “It’s nice to see their passion and energy produce such quality work.” This is BMB’s second time gaining national and regional recognition this year. After winning the National Student Television’s Broadcast excellence award in February. The BASH Awards are a regional competition begun by Southold High School in 2017.

Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting, the Central High School District’s broadcasting specialty program housed at Wellington C. Mepham High School, took home four first place awards and one for third place at this year’s Broadcast Awards for Senior High (The BASH Awards). BMB was nominated for awards in six categories taking home first place for Best Community News Package, Best Anchor Team, Most Entertaining and Best Broadcast for the BMB Morning Announcements. Senior Emily Yucht, who produced three of BMB’s winning entries and its third-place award for Best School News Package, said the day was a testament to the hard work and dedication of every member of the program. “We all work so well together, it’s a family atmosphere where we pick each other up and root each other on,” she explained. “On any given day there are always a dozen kids in the studio working together to create things.” Teacher Lisa Kalish said it was a proud day for the students and staff alike. “It was great to see the parade of BMB kids to the stage at Stony Brook accepting their awards,” she added. “The kids have worked so hard all year and grown so much it is so fantastic to see them getting the recognition they deserve.”

Little Flower was founded in 1929 by Catholic priest Monsignor Bernard Quinn who came to Wading River, Long Island, looking for a haven for the youth of his parish in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, that were excluded from programs and services at the time. Since then, Little Flower has grown and adapted to address the unmet needs of thousands of children, families and individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. One of this organization’s oldest and largest programs is its family foster care program, which has served children and families throughout New York City and Long Island since 1952. Little Flower is committed to ﬁnding safe and nurturing homes for children and young adults that are unable to remain home with their families because they believe every child should have guidance, stability and love. Little Flower strives to meet the immediate needs of children entering foster care by partnering with dedicated foster parents who bring experience and skills in supporting children experiencing trauma. Potential foster parents undergo a thorough application and screening process, complete training, and participate in a home study before becoming a foster parent. The Little Flower team provides ongoing support and services to foster parents to ensure they can create the most nurturing environment for the foster children in their care. Additionally, Little Flower partners with foster parents and children’s families to support the children while their family receives the support and services they need to safely parent upon the child’s return from foster care. They also work with extended family to ﬁnd relatives or other permanent homes for children who cannot safely return to their parents. This

Foster Care program is committed to supporting children experiencing trauma and strengthening families. For children requiring specialized care, Little Flower offers a Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home (TFBH) program based on their Wading River campus that works with children placed in foster care through Nassau or Suffolk County. Therapeutic foster parents are provided with additional training and certiﬁcation to best care for the specialized needs of the foster children in their home. In addition to providing temporary care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, foster parents work closely with the organization’s social work team and the child’s parents in support of family reuniﬁcation or permanency planning and ensure children are available to attend family visits. Foster parents model positive behavior, provide guidance and positive experiences, as well as support educational, dental, medical, and mental health needs of the child. Little Flower is proud to partner with such compassionate individuals willing to help children in need thrive and reach their full potential. Vivian M., a foster parent with Little Flower for more than 13 years, shared that she became a foster parent because she “loves children and wanted to make a difference.”

Newbridge Duo Sows The Seeds Of Literacy for this year’s PARP program was “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” Activities centered around friendship such as buddy reading, twin day, book swaps and donations for the Book Fairies. Ms. De Jesus and her daughter were proud to share their book with Marion’s Newbridge Road friends, discuss the publishing process and answer questions. Every year, kindergartners in Peggy Vento’s class plant sunflowers in the spring, and each child brings one home once it begins to sprout. Because school closed in March when Marion was in kindergarten, Ms. Vento

mailed them sunflower seeds. The book focuses on Marion’s journey to turn the seeds into beautiful flowers, with messages of determination, perseverance and the rewards of hard work. Interim Principal Amanda Licci said it was inspiring for students to see someone from North Bellmore achieve their goal of publishing a book. “Someone in our community did something beautiful and wonderful, and we want to celebrate that at Newbridge Road,” she said. “The book has a great message for children.”

World War II Weekend At The Museum Of American Armor Will Observe The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank “Calling All Sherman Veterans For A Tank Side Dedication Ceremony” The 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe will be the featured armor vehicle during this year’s World War II Encampment Weekend at the Museum of American Armor inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, Long Island, on Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank veterans to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary and participating in an oral histories project that memorializes their experiences. In addition to the Sherman, the weekend will feature military reenactments presented by the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and a parade of operational armor vehicles that comprise the museum’s extensive collection. The Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish stated,

MacArthur High School Students Shine In Gymnastics Sean Purcell and Nicholas Marmo, ninth graders at General Douglas MacArthur High School in the Levittown Public School District, have enjoyed a successful season as gymnasts and will perform on a national level. Sean and Nicholas have practiced gymnastics since

they were young. Together, they competed on a local gym’s team for three years. They recently surpassed the competition at the local, state and regional level to make it to the Men’s Eastern National Championships in Michigan to face off against gymnasts across eastern United States. They hope

to continue gymnastics in college. Sean described the unique bond him and Nicholas have formed over the years: “In the gym, we compete against each other, but we still root for each other later on,” he said.

Legislature Approves Paid Internship Program For Local College Students

During the Monday, May 23 meeting of the full Nassau County Legislature at the Museum of American Armor in Old Bethpage, legislators voted unanimously to allocate $250,000 of American Rescue Plan Act to establish a new paid scholarship program for local college students. Under the County program, interns will be employed by the Office of the County Executive and will be assigned to a department within

the Nassau County government. The goal is to provide students with opportunities to gain hands-on experience and learn directly from highranking Nassau County government leaders. The program will be open to college students who are residents of Nassau County and/or students who are enrolled in colleges or universities located in Nassau County. “I am glad that Nassau County has taken steps toward utilizing County

government to enrich the educational opportunities available to local college students and create a valuable opportunity for them to earn while they learn,” said Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggiWhitton (D - Glen Cove) said. “I look forward to the creation of a successful, merit-based program that empowers participants to thrive as they complete their studies and pursue their passions in the workplace.”
