Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s Department of World Languages held its annual honor society induction ceremony on May 17th, recognizing students of French, Italian and Spanish. The event was organized by language teachers Nikole DeLuca, Alexandra

Kefaliakos, Cara Sycoff and Keryn Thienachariya. “Audience members were treated to musical performances and poetry recitations in French, Spanish and Italian,” said World Languages Chairperson Enrique Montes. Students were presented

with their certificates of excellence by each language honor society adviser. In his speech to inductees, Montes spoke about his journey as a language learner and encouraged students to continue reaching for excellence.

Angels Revisited By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And now, a selection from the archives, published June 2008... This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

PRESIDENTIAL CONGRATS - The Town of Hempstead’s annual Presidents’ Recognition Day event was recently held, where Rosemary Truelove of Wantagh, President of the Wantagh Senior Center, and Daniel Benedetto of Westbury, President of the Wantagh Senior Center Men’s Club, were honored. The event recognizes the selfless contributions and volunteer efforts of senior center and senior club presidents, made on behalf of their fellow seniors.

On May 25th, Wellington C. Mepham High School students gathered after school for an elite event during which they learned how to order a meal in Italian. World Languages teacher Caterina Dand, who organized the event, designed a program in which students learned the Italian language and explored the cultural differences between Italy and the United States.

Italian students volunteered to be “waiters” and took the orders of the participants. The attendees practiced their newly acquired expressions, placed their order from the menu and enjoyed a delicious Italian meal. “The participants left with knowledge they could take with them on their future travels to Italy,” said Dand. Mepham’s ELITE Program (Enriching

Middle school students Steven Brauer of Levittown, Breanna Occhiogrosso of Wantagh and Jasmine Rodriguez of Bethpage were selected as recipients of the Levittown Community Council’s Junior Volunteer of the Year Award. The award is presented

annually to middle school students, nominated by their school administrators or teachers, who have exhibited exceptional social responsibility through their volunteer school and community involvements. Eleven year old Brauer attends Wisdom Lane Middle School;

Occhiogrosso, 13, attends Jonas E. Salk Middle School, and Rodriguez, 14, is a student at Island Trees. The Junior Volunteer of the Year Award is a signature activity of the Levittown Community Council and has been conferred annually since 2002.

The East Meadow School District congratulates East Meadow High School junior Caitlyn Herlihy on being named the overall winner in the 2016 Congressional Art Competition. The Congressional Institute sponsors this nationwide high school visual arts competition every spring to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Caitlyn won for her photography submission. Congresswoman Kathleen M. Rice will recognize Caitlyn and other congressional district

winners for their artistic creativity and talents at Adelphi University on June 3rd. During the ceremony, the university will also announce scholarships for all winners. As the competition’s national winner, Caitlyn will be invited to a special reception at the Capitol Visitor Center Atrium and Auditorium in Washington, D.C., on June 23rd. Furthermore, beginning in June, her piece will be exhibited for one year by the Architect of the Capitol in the pedestrian tunnel, the most traveled corridor

between the Capitol and the Cannon House Office Building. Caitlyn’s art teacher, Ryan Rochford, is extremely proud of her artistic abilities and success in the competition. “Having the artwork of one of our very own students displayed in the Capitol Building for an entire year is a wonderful accomplishment,” he said. The district is exceptionally proud of Caitlyn and wishes her the best in her future endeavors.

Evening breezes caress my skin Calling me to hear night’s melody Moon shines creamy opal Radiates slivers of silver rays Illuminating the diamond studded sky. City lights beam across the bay Strung along the sapphire horizon A party garland dances in the wind Blinks like fireflies.

Coinciding with their studies on the history of Long Island, fourthgraders at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District traveled back in time to experience the Colonial era. Dressed in long skirts, white aprons, bonnets, caps, knickers, jackets and suspenders, students experienced life during this American period with classroom activities based on the themes of Colonial life, the Culper Spy Ring, Loyalist vs. Patriot debates and the role of slavery in

New York. To better understand common pastimes and foods of the era, the students crafted toys such as Bilbo catchers and whirligigs out of paper cups, string and tin foil, churned their own butter using mason jars and made johnnycakes, a typical meal eaten by travelers, from scratch. Rotating to the next activity, students became Culper Spies, cracking codes from Gen. George Washington to gather intelligence about the

Loyalists in order to win the Revolutionary War. Divided into the two battling parties — Loyalists and Patriots — students debated about why their party would win the war, expressing their allegiance to or rebellion against the British. Concluding their travels, the fourth-graders learned about how landowners obtained slaves, how slaves escaped their owners and how their were laws regarding the taxing of freed slaves.

Circus Comes to Town Students at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District were entertained by a variety of circus acts when the National Circus Project visited the school. The National Circus

Project is an educational outreach program that incorporates circus routines, comedy and audience participation. With the help of NCP artists Greg Milstein and Natalie Wise, students

Evening of Excellence The East Meadow Board of Education recognized the accomplishments of community members, students and alumni during its May 19th communication meeting. Throughout the evening, the W.T. Clarke High School Brass Ensemble, Brass Band and Parkway Elementary School String Quartet performed musical numbers for those gathered in the conference room at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center. Continuing a tradition set forth by Board Trustee Jeffrey Rosenking, the board and central administration recognized the contributions of community veterans who have served our country. They honored members of American Legion Post 1082 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2736 with the Distinguished Service Award for their service to the country and for providing East Meadow students with a variety of scholarships to continue their education. While the brass ensemble performed the “Armed Forces Medley,” Daniel Carbonare, a veteran with American Legion Post 1082, accepted the award on behalf of both organizations. The evening continued with the board, central

administration and East Meadow High School Principal Richard Howard acknowledging the recipients of the Girl Scout Gold and Boy Scout Eagle awards for their active citizenship and efforts to make their community and schools a better place. “On behalf of East Meadow High School and W.T. Clarke High School, we congratulate these young men and women for their organizational and leadership skills, and for their sense of community that comes from ‘going for the Gold,’” Howard said. Following these prestigious awards, East Meadow High School alumnus Dr. Harvey J. Miller was recognized with an award of excellence for his ongoing commitment to ensuring the health and safety of the district’s children. He was presented with the honor by the board, central administration and Dr. Frank Saracino, a former East Meadow High School principal and district superintendent. After 12 years, Dr. Miller’s medical work has changed New York State Education Law to allow students with patientspecific prescriptions to carry portable nebulizers for bronchial asthma exasperations anywhere

on school grounds before, during and after school hours. The district is in full support of this new law and will now have nebulizers available for students who participate in interscholastic athletics, as well as in before- and after-school activities, on school grounds. Dr. Miller is an allergy immunology and asthma specialist who has been practicing medicine for 28 years at Southside Hospital Northwell Health. He founded the Asthma Education and Support Program at Southside and belongs to the hospital’s teaching service pediatric department. In 2015, Southside named him Teacher of the Year and granted him its Community Award for his contributions to teaching and community service. Concluding the evening, Woodland Middle School Principal James Lethbridge and W.T. Clarke Middle School Principal Stacy Breslin acknowledged the May and June “Terrific Kids.” Sponsored by the East Meadow Kiwanis Club, the Terrific Kids program recognizes sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students who continually improve as individuals, students and members of the community.

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory The W.T. Clarke Middle School Drama Club recently performed “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” a musical based on the Roald Dahl classic. Enigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka holds a contest for five individuals to tour the Wonka factory and receive

a lifetime supply of candy if they find a golden ticket in his delicious candy bars. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats. Charlie Bucket, the fifth child, is a likeable young boy who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather. The children

must learn to follow Mr. Wonka’s rules in the factory or suffer the consequences. Under the direction of faculty members Patricia Hartman and Katie Pienkos, the cast and crew received a standing ovation for their scrumptious performance.

PRESIDENTIAL RECOGNITION - The Town of Hempstead’s annual Presidents’ Recognition Day event was recently held, where Sandra Danesi of Levittown, President of the Levittown Senior Center, was congratulated. The event recognizes the selfless contributions and volunteer efforts of senior center and senior club presidents, made on behalf of their fellow seniors.

Field of Honor Members of Division Avenue and MacArthur high school’s Key Clubs joined forces with Gardiners Avenue fifthgrade students to plant 300 American flags on the elementary school’s lawn for the Levittown School District’s Field of Honor event, held on May 29th. For the past several months, members of the

community purchased flags on the district’s website from the Colonial Flag Company based in Utah. The proceeds from the flag purchases, totaling $4,000, were then donated to the Hope for the Warriors organization. The students worked for several hours securing the flags to poles and then driving the flags

into the ground. Social studies teacher and event organizer Steve Costello said the students worked hard to provide this service to the community. “It was wonderful to see students who were willing to take the time out of their day for such an important event,” Mr. Costello said.

As a part of the summer Mitzvah (Good Deed) Program, Congregation Shaaray Shalom (formally The Jewish Community of West Hempstead) located at 711 Dogwood Avenue in West Hempstead will be collecting new or gently used and cleaned, washcloths, new or gently used and cleaned towels, small plastic baggies, and travel-sized toiletries.

The travel size toiletries can include mouthwash, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, hand lotions, mini-soaps, etc. Many of us have traveled and stayed in hotels, and motels and have saved some of these travel sized toiletries during our trips. These items will be made into washing kits which will be donated to the Mary Brennan INN (also

On May 18th, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Chamber Orchestra competed at the NYSSMA Majors Festival hosted at Hofstra University. The elite string students, representing each high school in BellmoreMerrick, rehearsed every

Wednesday night to prepare three pieces to play at the event. This was the first time that any group in the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD competed at this festival in more than 30 years. After countless hours of practice and hard work, the students achieved a perfect score of

Gold with Distinction, the highest honor awarded at the festival. The group, along with their conductor and teacher Eric Vivelo, are excited for their future endeavors and believe their potential is limitless.

STEAM Ahead Mandalay Elementary School students were eager to try their hands in a number of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics workshops as they partnered with parents during the school’s inaugural STEAM Night. During the event, each student was enrolled in two creative and challenging activities, which emphasized the district’s

instructional approach to guide students in dialogue, critical thinking, problemsolving, collaboration and inquiry. Divided into grades 3-5 and K-2, students constructed a sailboat, made a catapult, invented objects that would fly in a wind tunnel, explored the reactions of acid and base chemicals and propelled rockets. They created roller coasters and racetracks,

discovered gravity through creation of an egg bungee drop and designed a Gamestar mechanic video game. “This was a wonderful opportunity for the students to tinker and explore STEAM elements in hands-on workshops,” Principal Marie Pisicchio said. “During this amazing turnout, the students and parents really embraced the STEAM curriculum.”

Spanish Performance The fifth- and sixthgrade Honors Chorus at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District ushered in the season by performing “De Colores,” a traditional Mexican folk song about the beauty of spring. Sixth-grade student, Julia Levy, explained to

the audience the meaning of the vernal song, which emphasizes the many colors of the world. The chorus accompanied the song with a choreographed dance and cardboard props such as chickens, flowers and insects. The performance was video recorded

Students, administrators and faculty in the East Meadow School District celebrated Red Nose Day on May 26th to help community members and local families in need. Red Nose Day, a fundraising campaign organized by the nonprofit Comic Relief Inc., is on a mission to lift kids out of poverty across all 50 states and 15 international

countries through programs that keep them safe, healthy and educated. Every school in the district collected donations of nonperishable food items for a week and participated in an array of activities that encouraged students and faculty to support this worthy cause. In addition, the East Meadow Kiwanis and East Meadow Chamber

of Commerce supplied red noses for purchase at East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools. All proceeds will benefit the organization. Addressing all participants in the district and community, PTA Council President Donna La Scala said, “Thank you all for your participation and for getting silly during this year’s Red Nose Day.”

three-year Advanced Science Research program, Ryan said, “[The program gave me] the opportunity to work in a materials science lab, where I studied a specific polymer and its ability to be used in prostheses in the future. I ran all of my own tests, analyzed my data on my own and wrote a research paper that I was proud of. It was tedious work, but I was more than happy with the end results.” Ryan plans to study chemical engineering at Stony Brook University in the fall.

High Honors Continued From 11 Mepham salutatorian Kristina DiMiceli is intrinsically motivated in all of her pursuits. “Doing what is right comes before being popular or wanting to add something to her resume,” said her guidance counselor, Kimberly Thorgersen. DiMiceli has been a member of Mepham’s orchestra and the Mepham-Calhoun Advanced Chamber Orchestra for the past four years, and has the distinction of being second chair violinist for both groups. She has performed at Level 6 in

the New York State School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Festival and lends her talents to her school’s dramatic productions as a member of the pit orchestra. Also a skilled pianist, she performs with Mepham’s jazz ensemble, earned a bronze award in the Golden Key International Piano Competition and placed third in the Crescendo Competition. DiMiceli said her motivation was derived from different teachers acting as “personal cheerleaders.” “Their eagerness to help me through my struggles as well as praise me
