For the third consecutive year, sixth-graders at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District raised more than $2,500 for Reagan, an elementary school student in Kenya, through their “Acts of Kindness” fundraiser. The funds were given to the nonprofit organization Reason2Smile to provide another year of schooling for the young student. Established two years ago by the Class of 2015, the Chatterton graduating class has been providing Reagan with a full year of schooling, supplies and the opportunity to learn in a

classroom. According to its website, Reason2Smile’s mission is to financially assist impoverished orphans and at-risk children living in developing countries. The organization strives to create healthy, sustainable environments through local, revenue-producing projects and seeks to give these children a reason to smile by providing them with a safe living environment, proper nutrition and quality education. With a fundraising goal of $350 — the cost of sending an elementary child to

school for an entire year — the sixth-graders held a two-week drive in which students found sponsors to support their kind acts. From April 26th through May 10th, the sixthgraders recorded their acts of kindness, and sponsors contributed either a flat rate amount for their participation or assigned any dollar amount of their choosing for each act performed. The students’ good deeds included cleaning their bedrooms, including others during recess, assisting a sibling with their homework and helping their parents with

household chores. On May 11th, Donna Rosenblum, CEO of Reason2Smile and a former Chatterton parent, paid a special visit to the school. She spoke to students about Keela Dates, the founder of Reason2Smile, as well as the Jambo Jipya school and children’s home in Kenya. She also discussed how the funds raised in excess of the goal can benefit the school’s

infrastructural needs, including the construction of a new library, and shared stories from her most recent trip to Kenya. To supplement their efforts, the sixth-grade students organized a sale of Reason2Smile bracelets to the children of Chatterton. They got the whole school involved by speaking to each class about their involvement with the organization

and sold $800 worth of bracelets to the school over three days. This lead to a total amount of $2,589 being raised for the cause, which was presented to Mrs. Rosenblum in the form of a check. The district commends the Chatterton Class of 2017 for their benevolent acts and thanks all of the Chatterton School faculty and administrators who made this event successful.

A Time to Remember

My alma mater, Lindy High School, recently held its senior prom last week, bringing to mind my own end-of-year soirees which took place so many years ago. Our senior prom was, of course, a highlight; even more so for the fact that it was held at the top of the World Trade Center, at the one and only Windows on the World. What a magical night it was, and what an unforgettable time we had celebrating among the clouds, overlooking the greatest city in the world. Often forgotten in the recollections of high school, however, was the equally memorable evening we had at our junior prom. Held at the famed Narragansett Inn, it brought the elegance of our first “real” dance to our hometown, complete with swirling gowns and high heels, and hair and makeup appointments for all on the afternoon of the big event. Remember, at this point,

sweet sixteen’s had yet to take on the extravagance of a small wedding, and proms truly were the formal affairs of the age. Everything down to the smallest detail was coordinated, from corsage colors to jewelry and accessories, to the tiny flowers and rhinestone clips which adorned many of the girls’ hair. The class voted on their pick for “Junior Prom Song” in the weeks leading up to the event, forgoing the more current hits for a classic from Long Island’s own Billy Joel, “This is the Time.” I remember taking pictures beforehand at my grandparents’ house, walking down the big staircase and masquerading in all sorts of corny poses for the camera. This, of course, predated the advent of cell phones and the notorious “selfies” of today; but every single collection of friends had the same standard photo in front of their limo, couples angled inward, corsages on display.

There was something elegant in the simplicity. Junior prom was a bit more casual for our group. Instead of a limo, we carpooled. Instead of any post-prom festivities, we stopped off at McDonald’s on the way home – in the excitement of the evening, it seems no one had really taken the time to sit down and eat. We were too busy taking photos by the grand piano in the lobby, cheering on the prom court…and dancing, of course. I remember coming home that night and sitting up for hours, recollecting every last detail of the evening to my parents, still in my gown and high heels, my hair a little disheveled but none the worse for wear, not wanting the day to end. Sure, senior prom may have had the pomp and circumstance and the expectation of great things; but junior prom, for me, far exceeded all that. It was, truly the time to remember.

Spirit Shines Through Mural The cafeteria at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District will soon get a new splash of color following the completion of a mural that was truly a schoolwide effort. Saw Mill recently welcomed Joyce Raimondo as an artist-in-residence. The author of several children’s art books helped the students design a mural

in the style of pop artist Keith Haring that also spotlighted the school’s character education program. The colorful mural, which was completed on five large panels, features the words optimism, responsibility, perseverance, citizenship and cooperation along with human caricatures and symbols like stars, hearts

and peace signs. It also contains artistic messages about innovation, imagination, creativity, exploration, physical fitness and protecting the environment. Each of the school’s more than 700 students got to paint a section of the mural in art class with teacher Amy Lopez.

Arts Festival The districtwide arts festival held on May 21st is one of the highlights of the music and art departments of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. “It’s one of the unique opportunities showcasing the BMCHSD Art and Music Departments in a

our students, as well as a celebration of the passion and dedication of our teachers, and it is most definitely a celebration of the commitment by this district to the invaluable role the arts play in education,” added Fontana.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino handed over the reins to a student for a day as part of Students in Government Day 2017, on Monday, May 15th, while 12 other students from throughout the township were sworn in as department heads and called into duty during a mock severe weather scenario. “Well over four years have passed since Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on communities throughout the Town of Hempstead, but the path of destruction is still evident with homes being repaired and our beaches undergoing a major restoration project in time for the summer season,” stated Supervisor Santino. “As Hurricane season is about to commence yet again, this program is a great opportunity for 11th

grade government students to experience first-hand how government responds during times of crisis.” By working through a mock hurricane scenario, the students learned how closely all town departments have to work together in order to best serve the residents in an emergency. The scenario featured a hurricane headed straight for Long Island. Students interacted in their various roles to protect the safety and wellbeing of town residents in the midst of the weather crisis. The real department heads guided them throughout the day. Students from the following schools participated in the mock severe weather scenario: Calhoun High School, East Meadow High School, Elmont Memorial High School, Floral Park Memorial High School,

Hewlett High School, Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway, Holy Trinity Diocesan High School, John F. Kennedy High School, Kellenberg Memorial High School, Lawrence High School, Mepham High School, Sacred Heart Academy and Valley Stream South High School. Students reconvened for a final emergency management meeting where they each provided a brief update of what transpired within their department. Afterward, they had a question and answer session with Supervisor Santino and council members. “These students are all learning about government this year, and Students in Government Day is a truly hands-on lesson for them,” concluded Supervisor Santino.

East Meadow UFSD student Samantha Miller, who studies Veterinary Science at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, took first place at the New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships, held in Syracuse earlier this spring. She earned the top spot for her outstanding performance in the Action Skills competition. Samantha participated in a series of timed events related to her course of study at Barry Tech, as well as in contests in leadership and professional development. The state competition is one in a

national series of events SkillsUSA sponsors as part of its mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce. Considerable effort goes into qualifying for the annual SkillsUSA competition. All Barry Tech students have a double workload, completing not only their Barry Tech assignments, but also satisfying full courses of study at their home schools. Add to that the intensive training that it takes to earn the privilege of competing in SkillsUSA, and it becomes clear how

For quite a while now I tried to figure out What love, admiration and spells are about. Powers of a psyche are mine from time to time Most often when cupid his bells lets chime. I actually feel the thoughts of people dear to me Without being told, their deepest concerns I see. Spells are vibrant declarations of a nameless force They have in a chosen media their source. Onto my open umbrella those spells often fall Slowly one by one to the ground they roll. I don’t want them to get me into their grip I am afraid that into obsession I might slip. Yet, at times I succumb and those powers use I do with you, infatuation is my excuse! Any and all caution is thrown out to hell I close the umbrella and submit to the spell!

Good Deed Award MacArthur High School sophomore Michael Reed is the recipient of the Long Island Teenagers Good Deed Award, sponsored by the National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education on Long Island. This award was presented at Congregation Beth Shalom Chabad in Mineola and recognizes Michael’s outstanding example of good deeds, kindness and significant achievements inspiring mankind. Michael is currently

working with his mother on the redesign of hospital gowns for pediatric patients at Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he recently received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his community service efforts. A former kidney transplant recipient, Michael was invited to speak by the medical center about the importance of organ donation in recognition of National Organ Donor Appreciation Day in

October. Michael also serves on the medical center’s youth advisory committee, assisting in the planning and organization of an annual prom for patients. He also volunteer’s time in the transportation department, transporting beds and materials to various departments. The Levittown School District congratulates Michael on this outstanding achievement.

Island Harvest Fundraiser Under the guidance of Bellmore teachers Regina Harten and Jennifer Lucchetti, the Shore Road School fifth-grade student council raised $1,000 for Island Harvest during its Valentine’s Day Sale. Members collected coins in the cafeteria and sold

stuffed animals and various Valentine’s Day-themed items to peers and staff. Island Harvest representatives Barry Landsman and Linda Sotomayer also visited the students to thank them for their generosity and to educate the young

philanthropists on the work being done by the organization. Landsman said the money will go to Island Harvest’s Backpack Feeding Program, which supplements meals on the weekends for children who depend on school breakfast and lunch during the week.

The Express Yourself drama club at Sanford H. Calhoun High School pulled off a theatrical performance of “Sleeping Beauty,” accompanied members of the school’s On Tour Company. “Together the kids put on a great show that was very much enjoyed by students, staff and parents,” said special education teacher Wendy Simson.

Members of the singing group Crescendo also contributed with an a capella rendition of “I Hope You Dance.” Sophomore Makayla Stapler, a first-year member of Express Yourself, said she “loved being part of a great group and worked very hard to put the show together.” “I loved working with my buddy in the show and

East Broadway Elementary School students in Levittown participated in the school’s first Bright Ideas Convention, a night of science which included STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics), upcycling and scientific method projects. Assistant Principal

Beth Swanson noted that 70 students voluntarily participated in the science activity. “The goal of the activity is to tap into the minds of students who love science,” she said. Those participants who chose to create a STEAM project accessed their prior knowledge of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics to

solve a real-world problem. Students who created an upcycling project used materials in their home and reused them to create something new, useful and innovative. Students were also encouraged to use the scientific method to organize an experiment or science project.

Chalkboards may be a thing of the past in schools, so when youngsters at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District were given chalk and a solid black canvas, it may have been an unfamiliar experience. It didn’t take long for them to figure out what to do. The school hosted Chalk the Walk on May 23rd, part of the Student Council’s Spirit Week activities. The long circular driveway in front of the school was closed off, and the more than 700 students were sent out to add some color.

By the end of the day, the black pavement was hardly visible and the work spilled over onto the surrounding sidewalks. The children were asked to share their Saw Mill pride. Students wrote their names, positive messages about the school and drew pictures such as peace signs, hearts and Sheldon, the owl mascot. Others created acrostic poems using the school’s name. “We wanted to give each of the students a chance to express why they loved Saw Mill, and they made it very clear how proud they are to go to school here,”

said fifth-grade teacher Melissa Dwyer, who advises the Student Council along with teacher Stephanie Meehan and Assistant Principal Danica Brugge. “After school, I saw many students bringing their parents to the circle to show them their display of pride.” Spirit Week also kicked off with Decorate a Banner Day. Each class created a banner to show Saw Mill pride, which were then hung throughout the cafeteria. Rounding out the week were sports jersey day, field day and wear your blue day.

Making a SPLASH Shore Road School environmental club members visited students in Stacy Reiner’s thirdgrade class at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore to demonstrate ways to protect Long Island’s waterways. The sixth-grade environmentalists have been working with the grassroots environmental organization Operation SPLASH by clearing storm drains around their

community streets and writing to the town about environmental problems and issues. The Operation SPLASH volunteers, under the direction of advisers Carolyn Acevedo and Kelly Popielaski, led the younger students in a variety of games, lessons and activities to drive home the value of being savvy environmentalists. District Music and Art Awards Hundreds of elementary and secondary school students were honored for their excellence in music, art and humanitarianism during the East Meadow School District’s annual Music and Art Awards ceremony on May 9th. Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo opened the ceremony by highlighting the exceptional students for their many accomplishments over the course of the year and thanking the talented teachers, administrators and community members for their continued support of the district’s fine arts program. “Tonight is about recognizing our students who diligently worked to develop their talents in music, art and humanitarianism,” Mr. Campo said. “As long as we work together in partnership for the benefit of our children and our children continue to share their talents, this is going to be a much better world.” Following his welcoming remarks, students from each of the district’s nine schools were recognized with humanitarian awards for their strong character, tolerance and leadership skills. The honorees had also demonstrated outstanding citizenship by promoting kindness, sensitivity and acceptance of each other. In addition, more than 300 students were honored

for their outstanding achievements in music and art. As each student accepted their award, families, central administrators, faculty and members of the board of education applauded their creativity, diligence and compassion. Music highlights included: • Seven students were selected as All-State musicians and six were named alternates for the New York State School Music Association Winter Conference in Rochester, New York. • Thirty-three students were selected to perform in the Long Island String Festival Association festivals. • A total of 147 students performed in the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Festival at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. • Two high school seniors were selected to perform in the National Association for Music Education All-National Ensembles in Grapevine, Texas. • Three high school seniors were selected to perform in the National Association for Music Education’s Biennial Eastern Division Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey. • One high school senior was invited to perform

in the U.S. Army AllAmerican Marching Band in San Antonio, Texas. • Seven elementary school students performed in the Nassau Music Educators Association’s PEAK (Parents, Educators and Kids) Festival. Art highlights included: • Sixty-six students participated in the Art Supervisors Association All-County Art Exhibition. • Twelve students were selected to participate in the Long Island Art Teachers Association Art in HeART Exhibition and two students participated in the New York State Art Teacher Association Legislative Student Art Exhibition. • Eight elementary school students created illustrations for the district’s 2017-18 budget book. • Ten high school students participated in the Olympics of the Visual Arts state competition in Saratoga, New York. • Two elementary school students were New York State merit winners in this year’s PTA Reflections Program, which had the theme “What’s Your Story.”

Month of Kindness May is a Month of Kindness at Park Avenue School in the North Bellmore School District. The Shared Decision Making Team, which includes administrators, teachers, staff and parents, spearheaded the initiative in which students are encouraged to think about and act on ways they can show kindness to others. This year’s motto is “Kindness is contagious… pass it on!” Each class was tasked with writing a thank you note or creating a card for an important person in the school or district. Children wrote positive messages on colored index

cards which were used to spell out “KIND” on the bulletin board in the lobby. Students have also been asked to complete 31 kindness challenges such as smiling at someone, leaving a happy note or inspirational quote in the school, demonstrating good sportsmanship, saying “thank you” to bus drivers, cafeteria staff and custodians, making a food donation to the Community Cupboard and leaving a heads-up penny for someone to find for good luck. The calendar didn’t leave out the weekends, with suggestions for kind actions at home.

The May Principal’s Book of the Month was “What Does it Mean to be Kind?” by Rana DiOrio, which teachers read to their students. “The overall message is that an act of kindness, which can be simple and free, can change the course of a day for both the person sharing the kindness as well as the person receiving the kindness,” said Principal Eileen Speidel. “We want students to know that this is not limited to the month, but how they should be living year-round.”

Fifth-grade students from Barnum Woods, Bowling Green, George McVey, Meadowbrook and Parkway elementary schools in the East Meadow School District were treated to a special concert by Woodland Middle School’s eighthgrade band, chorus and orchestra as part of the Woodland Invitational “Unite and Delight” event on May 18th. “The Unite and Delight Music Invitational was designed as a showcase for our performing music ensembles while also serving as a warm welcome for the incoming sixth-graders who will be attending middle school this fall,” said the district’s

Director of Music and Art Kathyrn Behr. “The eighthgrade student musicians have worked diligently to prepare their musical pieces and are excited to demonstrate their talents for our young audience.” Whether it was the theme from “Beauty and the Beast” performed by the Woodland orchestra or a Disney medley that included the signature song “Be Our Guest” from the same movie delivered by the chorus, the fifthgraders were thoroughly entertained and greeted with many smiles by the Woodland staff and student leaders upon arrival. As an added treat, each fifth-grader received a Woodland string bag filled

with a water bottle, lanyard and a few school supplies. “Unite and Delight will ease the students’ transition to middle school and help them understand more about who we are as a school,” said Woodland eighth-grader Jacob Craven, a member of the chorus and volunteer greeter for the event. “The advice I would give them is to not be scared, let everything happen and do the best you can in your classes.” The fifth-graders also attended a sixth-grade orientation earlier in the year, during which they toured the building where they will attend middle school in the fall.

65th Anniversary Community members, local officials, students, faculty and administrators gathered to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District on May 19th. The school was built in the 1950s with the purpose of educating both elementary and junior high school students. The east campus was built in 1951, and two years later, the west building was constructed. At one point in time, student enrollment was more than 1,500. Opening the ceremony, Bowling Green Principal Maria Ciarametaro welcomed attendees to the celebration of this historic birthday of a terrific school in an exceptional community. “We celebrate because the Bowling Green school community is and has always been a wonderful and outstanding community that has seen so many

families and children pass through our doors,” said Mrs. Ciarametaro. “We are proud of the innumerable accomplishments and successes of Bowling Green students, past and present.” The festivities continued with students in grades K-5 performing a “Through the Decades” dance, choreographed by teachers Emily Buckley and Ilyssa Baine. Each grade gave their own performance that displayed music and dance moves from the 1950s to the 2000s, reflecting upon the many years Bowling Green has been educating students of East Meadow. Boosting school spirit was Spike, the school mascot, whose name had been voted on by Bowling Green’s student body prior to the event and revealed during the celebration. The newly designated mascot joined students, administrators and guests in singing “Happy Birthday” to the school as Mrs. Ciarametaro and

Assistant Principal Amelia Garcia unveiled the PTA’s gift to Bowling Green: two “buddy benches” at each entrance of the campus, a total of four benches, for students to make new friends at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. The anniversary bash concluded with a performance of the new school song, composed by students and children’s singer/songwriter Rick Charette. Departing students received an Italian ice and Bowling Green drawstring bag as a party favor. The district extends it gratitude to Bowling Green’s students, parents, staff, faculty and administrators, as well as the community, for aiding in the success of this exemplary school. Arielle Waters of the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD, who studies dance at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), was inducted as an inaugural member of the LIHSA chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA). She was recognized not only for her skill on the dance floor, but also for her academic achievements and leadership. As a founding member, Arielle was directly involved in the development of the new NHSDA chapter, electing

the founding officers and helping to plan the induction ceremony. “These are highachieving students with evolving artistry and a genuine interest in so many areas of the arts,” said Dina Denis-Paolucci, Head of the LIHSA Dance Department, who spearheaded the efforts to achieve this national recognition for her students. “I’m really proud of all of you,” she told her students at the induction ceremony. “This is a huge accomplishment for our

Only one nomination is submitted by each of the three middle schools. Council board members select the first place winner and runners up. CoPresident Tom Kohlman chaired the committee this year. The Junior Volunteer of the Year Award is a signature activity of the Levittown Community Council and has been conferred annually since 2002.

The Saw Mill Road sixthgrade band, under the direction of Christopher D’Orio, received a bronze

award. “I was impressed, as were the judges, by the amount of skill and poise the children and their directors displayed as they performed in pretty intense situations,” said Dinkelmeyer Principal Faith Skelos, who oversees the district’s music program. “Our student musicians are a great source of pride in North Bellmore.”

Tile Collage Each tile includes the student’s name, nickname, photo and handprint, as well as a quote and images that reflect his or her interests. Ms. Emmer said that students take pride in this and put great thought into their tiles. The idea was born nearly a decade ago as a way for the graduates to leave their permanent mark on the school.

“It’s history over the years,” Ms. Emmer said, noting that the collages from year to year reflect the changing trends. “It’s a really nice way for the sixth-graders to finish off their careers here as artists and be in command of their own canvases. We enjoy having students come back after they graduate and find their tile.”

Sixth-graders at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District are continuing a yearslong tradition by customizing tiles that will soon be hung on the wall. Each year, the graduating sixth-grade class creates a collage of six-inch ceramic tiles to adorn the first-floor hallway. The project is led by art teacher Jill Emmer.
