Educators throughout the Levittown Public Schools are starting to take a nontraditional approach to classroom design by creating a more flexible classroom space that encourages collaboration and helps increase student concentration. Elementary schools such as Summit Lane and Gardiners Avenue have incorporated new flexible seating options into their classroom and math classrooms at Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools have embraced a new classroom model that eliminates the need for individual desks. Just last month, fourthgraders in Jennifer O’Brien’s class at Summit Lane School have started to utilize new seating options to integrate multisensory activities into the curriculum. With the help of occupational therapist Jaime Spencer, the classroom was transformed to include standing desks, disc cushions filled with air, wobble seats or round stools, crate seats with padded tops and kneeling pads. According to Spencer, these new seating options have the ability to help students stay alert and focused, promote proper
balance, strength and postural control as well as give those who need to move a proper outlet. “Many children struggle to sit in their standard classroom chair throughout the day,” said Spencer. “Some children don’t have the core strength and postural control to hold themselves up without slumping or slouching. Other children just need to move. By incorporating various seating options, the children are able to select the learning position that is best for them.” Gardiners Avenue School has also recently embraced new classroom furniture options. Students have the opportunity to utilize standup whiteboard desks, cushioned rocker style chairs and colorful stools that allow movement to help students stay alert by moving if they need to. Northside Elementary School plans to incorporate flexible seating into their classroom design plans for the start of the 2018 school year. Among their plans, the school will be departmentalizing the fifth-grade wing of the building to include whiteboard tables and a couch in each room for

seating. At the high school level, math teachers from Division and MacArthur high schools have incorporated round tables in lieu of desks. The idea began with MacArthur High School math teacher Joanna Sanford. During a workshop, Sanford was challenged to consider an alternative classroom configuration. She reflected on her own experience in the classroom and how difficult it was to navigate around her room filled with desks. She thought tables would be a sufficient way to enhance collaboration among students and be a better solution for the classroom space. Three math classrooms in each high school have been transformed into these new math communities, filled with round tables that can seat up to five students. Educators can walk around to help students, while math activities and peer collaboration can take place with ease. “From my perspective, I have witnessed a very positive transformation in these new classrooms,” said Director of Mathematics and Business Dr. Ellen Stegman. “They are joyful

Jumping into June Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind. I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion. Being productive is hard work. And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some
carried over from just prior to the new year, remain. Sure, a few items have made their way into the “done” column; but mostly, the main bullet points stare back from the page, some expanded upon and added to as the months have progressed. The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore. Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze. The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that
incomparable moment of zen, and carry it with you into the other elements of life. Find the beauty in everything, as they say. A flower, a butterfly, a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore… Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether. Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that? And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you. Eventually. Maybe by July.
Neil Armstrong, Cleopatra VII and Albert Einstein were some of the A-List individuals to attend Mandalay Elementary School’s annual White House Tea. Hosted by the fifth-grade classes, the proverbial tea was an opportunity for the Wantagh students to share their newly acquired
knowledge of famous and important historical individuals, who made a difference in the world. As part of the district’s Writer’s Workshop program, students researched an individual and wrote a biography. Part two of the assignment was to write a script/ speech, highlighting the
most important points about their famous person. Each student, dressed in costume, then used the first person to deliver their speeches to delighted parents and peers. Some of the honored guests included Helen Keller, Lou Gehrig, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, Donald Trump and Walt Disney.

Ms. Lebowitz explained that the students were inspired by reading Gary Golio’s “Jimi: Sounds Like a Rainbow: A Story of the Young Jimi Hendrix,”
that described how the musician would hear music in the movements around him. Ms. Lebowitz then instructed the students to write the poems included in the anthology while they were listening to the sound of popcorn popping. When writing their poems, the students tried to write like they were Jimi, experiencing popcorn like a rainbow.

The Dynamics Of Leadership
Due to the importance of this topic, one can find a multitude of books, seminars and programs devoted to all aspects of leadership. This column will cover several important phases of the subject. At a later date, we may continue into other facets as well. First off, let’s define leadership. It is a process of influencing a group to achieve assigned goals. During my senior years of grad school, I wrote a thesis on leadership comparing how the U.S. Army developed leaders through the “90 Days Wonder Program,” which took participants from civilian to platoon leader in just three months time. This was then compared to the executive training program at RH Macy. Taking into account the deeper level of responsibility assigned to a platoon leader, much of the leadership skills remained somewhat the same. As just one example of the military training, every soldier knows of “the code.” During combat situations, the wounded were NEVER left on the battlefield. This was not recorded in any training manual, but strictly enforced by every trooper in the unit. Now let’s delve into the world of work. Any of my readers who majored in economics will soon recognize the
following: In business, there are two types of capital: 1.) Working Capital (Cash): Used by a business to fund company growth and meet cash flow needs. 2) Human Capital: The monetary value of all goods and services produced by all employees of the company. Key Leadership Point: A company that is primarily devoted to only working capital and ignoring the value of its employees will never make it in today’s economic climate. Every author who writes on leadership seems to have their favorite list of “dos & don’ts.” Here is mine: MUST DO Effective immediately, stop using the word “I” and substitute the word “WE.” You never express your own opinion, inferring that “it’s my way or the highway!” It’s now “WE” will do this together. By using this simple method, you will immediately starting building a trust level, which is so important for any leader. Trust is the base foundation for any relationship. It is built up slowly over time, never rushed. Unfortunately, once trust is broken, in the majority of cases, it will never regain its former level. All of this is especially true in leadership situations. Any
type of leader must have the full confidence and trust of the people he/she leads. As an example, the leader should be able to perform any of the tasks assigned to others. Moving into the world of interpersonal relationships, a couple who is married or living together must have the full trust of the other 24/7. Once this trust is shattered, the end result is usually separation or eventually divorce. Another key aid in leadership is to always maintain a positive attitude. Let’s face it, there will be days when everything seems to be going wrong, or when careful planning seems to not pay off. Remember, you are the leader, and the team looks to you for guidance and support. Never forget, that 70%-80% of the message you give is not what you say, but how you look when you say it! NEVER DO Being successful as a leader or a partner in marriage takes continual effort on a daily basis. It includes never taking the other person for granted or putting your personal interests ahead of another. Never take advantage of your position. Never make premature judgments about your team. Each person assigned to you is an individual with their own hopes and dreams.

BROADWAY COMES TO BABYLON: The Argyle Theatre

For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut. Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre. Operating in a town full of old New York charm like Babylon, Mark and Dylan Perlman, the father/son owners of the venue, could think of no better show with which to kick
off their inaugural season than Guys and Dolls, sponsored by Forerunner Technologies, Inc. The classic musical by Loesser, Swerling & Burrows builds highstakes tension and love between the high-stakes gamblers and other colorful characters created by New York writer Damon Runyon. As the show opens with the song named in tribute, Runyonland, the lights come up on a truly entertaining evening of song and dance. In this production, the Argyle has built a true gem. With the stage filled with thousands of light bulbs, the only thing that shines brighter than the scenery - which mimics the streets of old Broadway - are the performances of their professional actors pulled fresh from the streets of NEW Broadway. Getting to this point was no mean feat for the Perlman family, who have put several millions of dollars and countless late-evening hours into the project. But if you talk to them, their passion for and commitment to the performing arts is infectious, which no doubt contributed to their ability to surround themselves with a hardworking team of
seasoned professionals both for their in-house Argyle keeps moving east through Europe for staff, and for the production teams hired for Spring Awakening, catching a glimpse into the torments and explorations of youth in their individual productions. The Association for Mental Health & Wellness
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries! If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this nonprofit that believes mental health is

They strive to ensure that all their local needs and voices are not only heard, but also recognized by government leaders, the business community, advocacy groups and educational organizations in our region! The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. They also take donations of birdseed for the many birds that visit this Garden! Interested in becoming a sponsor or vendor? This event is their 6th annual Kick Stands Up Event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd, at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Full STEAM Ahead In addition to the hundreds of pieces of talented student artwork on displayed during Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Grand Avenue Middle School Art Show on May 17th, the Art and Robotics clubs collaborated to present an interactive musical drawing. “Musical drawings are playable graphic scores that can be touched to play melodies and harmonies,” explained Michelle Biancardo, a technology teacher and the Robotics Club adviser. Graphite pencil acts a
conductor of electricity, using the observer as the ground and connection of the music to the artwork itself. The code, written by seventh-grader Massimo Marino, is the orchestrator of the experience. He used programs such as Scratch and Makey Makey to create the program. A coding enthusiast, Marino used what he learned in Biancardo’s class and on his own to create this masterpiece. The project took more than two day to finish. “Once completed, it’s interesting to see all of
these things working together to create this,” Marino said. Art Club advisers Nicholas Giordano and Barbara Hirten worked with the students to create a drawing that could be “played “ through the use of technology. “It is an incredible example of STEAM in action,” said Giordano. “They combine visual composition, coding and electronics as well as movement and sound, creating an interactive audiovisual experience.”
Fluffy Friends The first-grade family recently got a little larger at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Thirty-three quail eggs hatched in Patricia Assande’s and Robin Obey’s classes, and students cared for their new friends by ensuring they had ample food and water. In April, following a presentation about the quail life cycle,
an incubator arrived for each classroom. After about three weeks, the eggs hatched overnight. One of the quails had a bent leg, and the school invited in Cathy St. Pierre from Wildlife in Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation to come and take it. She spoke to students about her organization and the care they provide for different animals.
The Northern Bobwhite quails will eventually be donated to Caleb Smith State Park Preserve in Smithtown, where they will be released to help control the tick population. “This is a really important project,” Ms. Assande said. “This is something that is very helpful to our environment.”

Adriana Pioli, an eighthgrade student at Grand Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District, has been selected as the grand champion of the 2018 Walt Whitman Birthplace 32nd annual Poetry Contest. English teacher Dawn Silvestri supported and promoted the students’
creative endeavors, which led to Pioli’s poem “My Mom” earning the top spot. Two other eighth-grade students were selected as category winners, Madeline Finelli’s “Tribute to the Joy Within” and Kyle Ulmschneider’s “My First Homerun.” “Each of these students has been invited to attend a celebration with their
families and teachers to be held at the Walt Whitman Birthplace at noon on Sunday, June 3rd,” said English Chairperson Mary Donnelly. The event will officiated by Vijay Seshadri, the WWBA 2018 Poet in Residence, and Pioli will read aloud her prizewinning poem.
Showing Spirit As part of its beautification effort, the Student Council at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District spelled out the school’s name in a fence. The students used blue, white and black Put-In Cups, which are colorful plastic blocks designed for chain-link fences, to write “Saw Mill Road.” The fence is located adjacent
to the staff parking lot and across from the exit where students go out for recess. Assistant Principal Danica Brugge explained that it could be a spot for parents to take first-day-of-school photos. Members of the Student Council, which includes third- through sixthgraders, decorated the fence on May 18, in advance of Pride Week. The advisers are Ms. Brugge, sixth-
grade teacher Christine Meiselas and fifth-grade teacher Melissa Mignoli. “It shows the responsibility of the Student Council, which is to beautify our school and make it better,” said fifthgrader Jake Lofrese. Added fourth-grader Patricia Schimmenti, “We care about our school and want to make it amazing.”

School Awards dinner and award ceremony at Nassau Community College on May 9th. Adams was among 31 chemistry students from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens to receive this honor for demonstrating a strong interest in the field and for exceling in honors chemistry and Advanced

Placement chemistry classes. During the evening, Dr. Gene Hall, an Applied Research professor at Rutgers University, was the guest speaker and discussed Forensic Analytical Chemistry and the importance of entering the chemistry field.
Five students from Jonas E. Salk Middle School participated in the Mathematics Tournament by the Sea at Long Beach Middle School on May 18th, earning sixth place out of 35 teams across Nassau and Suffolk counties. With the guidance of math teachers Kelly DeCunzo and Katie Temme, the team featured sixth-graders Benjamin Campbell and David Silberger, and eighth-
graders Priya Dubey, Russell Silberger and Nico Stavrinos, who put their problem solving skills to the test. The math tournament consisted of three different competitions. A 30-minute individual event, a 15-minute team event and a 15-minute mixed team event. During the mixed team event, participants had the opportunity to work with students from

other schools. For all of the events, the students were given challenging questions that they could solve with the use of scrap paper. No calculators were permitted. Dubey earned seven out of a possible 10 points in the individual event and during the team event, the students answered four out of five questions correctly.

The fast food business is evolving, and more healthy choices are starting to become available. I had the pleasure of dining at a recently opened restaurant, CoreLife Eatery in Farmingdale, last week. They are focused on offering only the best foods and preparing them fresh on the spot. So many options to choose from - green bowls, grain bowls, broth bowls, freshly made beverages... the portions are hearty and satiating. You are able to make your own bowl or plate, choosing whichever fresh ingredients you prefer; you can also choose one of their creations from the menu, which can be customized as well. This place really appeals to me. I can choose all the components of my meal, and I know they are fresh, nutrient-dense ingredients, perfect for my needs. For my dining choice, I chose the Tuna Poke Fire Bowl. It comes with Ahi tuna
poke, avocado, pickled jalapeños, pickled red onions, pickled red cabbage, sesame Sriracha sprouts and forbidden purple rice ( I opted for romaine and spinach instead of the rice). I topped this meal with the suggested fire sauce and sesame ginger dressing. If you like heat, I highly recommend the fire sauce; it had an incredible flavor, as well as a nice touch of spice. It was an extremely tasty dish that left me satisfied. I really am looking forward to my next meal at CoreLife Eatery. It truly is the next step in the evolution of dining. All I know is that dining out and choosing to be healthy have usually been difficult. The pressure of finding a good option and ultimately settling for something familiar has happened far too often. I enjoy eating my homemade Lean & Green meal (3 servings of vegetables and 5-7 ounces of a lean protein), but trying to find that type of meal while dining out has been challenging. After a seven-day death march in January 1945, Reich ended up in Mauthausen, Austria. He then returned to Yugoslavia and escaped to England before marrying his wife in 1955.
The couple immigrated to the United States, where Reich became an engineer. He and his wife have two sons and four grandchildren. Reich is a frequent speaker and founding member of the Long Island Multi-Faith Forum. The students were moved by his presentation and reminded that history must never repeat itself.

Patriotism by Pen Wantagh Middle School students Emma Alexander (grade 8), Sean Hill-Hotz (grade 6) and Nora Toscano (grade 7) are school winners of the annual 2018 Memorial Day Writing Contest. Emma has been invited to read her essay at American Legion Post 1273 after Wantagh’s Memorial Day parade and ceremony, held on May 28th, and will receive a prize from
Commander Sottnick. Second-place winners also included Kayla Newbert (grade 6), Evan Thole (grade 7) and Jamie Watstein (grade 8). In addition, Madison Foster (grade 7), Jacqueline Mundy (grade 6) and Kelly Naus (grade 8) placed third in the contest. This is the second time that Evan has submitted a winning essay; he placed first while
enrolled in sixth grade. During the contest, the students were required to write an essay that completes the thought, “On Memorial Day, I will……..” The three top essays were chosen from each class, and each winner will receive a certificate from the English department. All of the winners have been invited to march in the Memorial Day parade.

Jonas E. Salk Middle School Spanish Club members and English as a New Language students had the unique opportunity to tour the United Nations headquarters in New York City on May 17th. Accompanied by library media specialist Kirsten Anderson, world language teacher Veronica Miller and ESL teacher Lynn
Ortega, the group arrived in Penn Station and were able to enjoy a few sights before heading over to the United Nations. They stopped at the lobby of the Empire State building and the New York Public Library. Following their sightseeing, the students headed over to Grand Central Station and made their way over
to the UN. Here, students learned about the history, purpose and objectives of the United Nations. They also were able to see how the United Nations is structured, learn about the involvement of the member states, visit several of the meeting rooms and view the artwork donated by various countries.

Two programs that promote character education at Jonas E. Salk Middle School were recently recognized by Character.org as recipients of the 2018 Promising Practices award. Meghan Mastronardi’s sixth-grade class’s “Pay It Forward Breakfast” and the school’s Challenger Athletic League, coordinated by teacher Stefanie Kost, were honored for fostering collaboration and character building within the school. The school is among other 2018 recipients that represent five countries, 21 states and Washington D.C., 238 public, charter and private schools, nine youth-serving organizations and eight school districts. Both programs followed two of Character.org’s 11 Principles of Effective Character Education. The “Pay It Forward Breakfast” was inspired by the students’ summer reading book “Pay It Forward” by Catherine Ryan Hyde and the corresponding programs that followed, facilitated by Director of English
Language Arts Kerin Slattery. After an assembly with motivational speaker and cofounder of the ReesSpecht Life Foundation, Richard Specht, Mastronardi’s fourth period sixth-graders decided that they wanted to find a way to give back to those that make a difference in the middle school. The students decided to host a “Pay It Forward Breakfast” on November 28th to honor four administrators and show their appreciation. They invited Principal John Zampaglione, Assistant Principal Patrick Mulligan, Dean Daniel Agovino and sixth-grade guidance counselor Michelle Gaufman-Steward. “We wanted to do something nice for the people that take care of our school,” said sixth-grader Hannah Granger. “I feel like we sometimes take what they do for granted so we wanted to really show them that we are thankful and that they really help us.” Using their own money, the students purchased bagels for the event and
created banners. With their $35 of leftover cash, the class voted on a charity to donate the remaining money to. They decided on St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The Challenger Athletic League was established six years ago and currently consists of 18-24 Jonas E. Salk Middle School and MacArthur High School students. The program, which runs from January to March, provides an opportunity for secondary students with special needs to participate in competitive athletics. Participants compete in about six basketball games per season and for those that may need extra assistance, a MacArthur High School junior or senior serves as a buddy. The buddies cheer on the students and encourage them to be their best as they compete against other challenger leagues from across Long Island. “It’s nice to see the Challenger League get noticed for all it does for special education students and their families,” said Kost.

Exploring the Significance Fourthand fifthgraders at East Broadway Elementary School received a visit from local veterans Andrew Booth, Michael Capillo, Al Gravina and Angelo Manzo on May 18 to learn more about the American Flag, including its symbolic meaning and
how to respect it. The four veterans from the Levittown American Legion Post 1711, played a video for the students about the American Flag’s significance in the United States, which followed with the students answering questions about the flag’s
history. They learned how to properly hold and display the flag and how to discard an old flag. Principal Jeanmarie Wink was invited to come up during the presentation with several students to learn how to correctly fold the American Flag.
The veterans worked with the students to teach them the proper folding technique. At the end of the presentation, they answered questions that the students had and received a warm thank you from Wink for their service.
