Bellmore Students Celebrate Mexican Culture to strengthen their knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. Out of paper bags, the students painted and constructed serapes, a Latin American shawl. Rotating through sections, the students sang Spanish songs, played Bingo in Spanish, created Mexican ﬂags and read about a boy’s

typical day in a Mexican school and village. One English language arts activity included the making of a Venn diagram in which the students compared the boy’s school day to a day of school in Bellmore. New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that. New Ground, based in Levittown, offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.

Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner. New Ground’s JumpStart Program launched in 2012 to expand these critical services to additional homeless families on their wait-list for the Long Term Housing Program. This Program is open to any homeless families, not just Veterans, and is intended to give families a jump-start on accomplishing their goals. When these families later transition into the Long Term Housing Program, they are well on their way toward realizing the steps needed to secure an independent future. A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social

workers provide guidance, resources and assistance to the families in various areas. The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. Melkun Named Scholarship Winner

W.T. Clarke High School senior Jonathan Melkun was named a National Merit Scholarship Winner on May 8 by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Jonathan was among 2,500 Merit Scholar designees chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists. His selection was due to a combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Since being named a finalist in March, Jonathan has decided on attending Princeton University this fall with the intention of majoring in mechanical and aerospace engineering. He was also announced the Class of 2019 valedictorian. Additionally, Jonathan earned All-Conference honors as a member of the winter track and field team. He also performed as a member of the pit during

Bringing The Circus To Town The East Meadow School District’s Bowling Green Elementary School welcomed the National Circus Project for an enthusiastic assembly On May 9. The National Circus Project is an educational outreach program that focuses on art education, physical education and

cultural arts. Through challenging workshops, students have the opportunity to learn patience, self-discipline and good habits. Each performance packed a panoramic presentation of circus skills into comedyvariety routines through audience interaction and participation. The

performers involved Bowling Green students and staff in their acts such as juggling and platespinning to demonstrate the fun of learning new tricks. Bowling Green thanks the performers of the National Circus Project for a fun and educational assembly.

Student Challenge Winners Donate Funds student teams through lessons and a service project to develop and practice leadership and teamwork skills. More than 7,200 teams took part in the annual Student Challenge competition, with teams from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. During the Student Challenge, Horizons program students, under the direction of teacher Patti Andreolis, raised money through the sale of two EsSCENTial Melts aromatherapy products. Aromatherapy candles were made out of recycled crayons and scented with lavender. The students also made rectangular eye pillows, both of which are designed to have a calming effect on stressed students. In addition, the district’s two Lead2Feed Student Challenge second-place teams, SoupRSouls and Waste-less Denim, each

donated $500 to the WE Charity, an organization which assists in breaking the cycle of poverty. The donations were raised through the SoupRSouls’ creation of decorative bowls, sold in partnership with Bigelow’s Restaurant in Rockville Center, which offered a free bowl of soup to anyone who bought one of SoupRSouls’ bowls. Waste-less Denim made decorative cellphone carriers out of recycled denim jeans, keeping used jeans out of landfills and the jeans’ indigo dyes out of waterways. Ms. Andreolis said the students were responsible for determining their own projects. “I am so proud of the students for their insightful projects and it’s inspiring to see middle school students with this depth of knowledge of social issues,” she said.

Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Sanford H. Calhoun High School girls track headed into the May 17 competition with a mission of earning their fourth consecutive division championship — and they were victorious. “The Colts got out to a fast start and never looked back,” said coach Joseph Migliano. “Maura Walters and Elizabeth Tuzzolo took third and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles earning the team a fast 10 points and Maura’s first ever AllDivision honor.” Next up was the 1500 meters in which Calhoun sent out freshman Julianna Razza and sophomore Faith Dwyer. Razza earned her first event championship while Dwyer ran her second fastest time all year and finished third to claim the last All-Division spot.

Lisa Jose took second in the 100-meter dash and also earned All-Division honors. Meanwhile, Jamie Campanelli went on to throw her personal best in shot put and win the event for the second straight year. Woodbury, N.Y. – Orchard Estate of Woodbury, a Benchmark assisted living and memory care community opening this summer in Woodbury, N.Y., today announced they are sponsoring Island Harvest Food Bank, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) and the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) Stamp Out Hunger event. This week, as part of the

annual event, Long Island residents are asked to leave non-perishable food donations by their mailbox for the letter carrier to pick up. Last year, the event generated more than 300,000 pounds of food for Long Island children, families, veterans, seniors and others in need. The donated food helps replenish Island Harvest Food Bank’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other

emergency feeding programs in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties, the supplies of which historically dwindle during the summer time. Orchard Estate is a sponsor of this year’s local Stamp Out Hunger event and will have a booth in the food bank’s warehouse where letter carriers can bring donations. “Hunger is a huge problem on Long Island, so we all need to

do our part to provide food for those who are most vulnerable,” says Doug Cormack, executive director of Orchard Estate. “We are happy and eager to help support such an important cause.” When complete, Orchard Estate of Woodbury will offer 89 assisted living and memory care units and spacious common areas totaling 74,000 square feet, which
