s part of their Science curriculum, the third graders at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School learned about the life cycle of the Painted Lady butterfly. During the program unit, each student observed their own larva, watched its development and journaled their observations. Through reading and research, students learned about each stage of metamorphosis and how butterflies adapt to survive. The students then released the butterflies.

Family & Children’s Association is kicking off a new $cholar Dollarz program to help provide college scholarships for local, at-risk youth. Many of the young people served by the non-profit have been challenged by poverty, homelessness and foster care. According to President/CEO Philip M. Packing Science You wouldn’t think packing groceries into a shopping bag would require, I don’t know, a degree in rocket science – but apparently, this task is much more complex than it seems, causing me to leave the supermarket shaking my head in amazement almost every time. For starters, there is no need to shove about 40 pounds worth of merchandise into one bag – paper or plastic – that neither the cashier, nor I, nor any human being can possibly lift without developing a hernia. Secondly, placing two or three items in the same said bag is equally absurd. The contents of one shopping cart need not, under any circumstances, be divided among 17 bags, I can assure you. And then we have the arrangement of the items within the bags… Granted, I’ve never
worked in a grocery store and I’m not sure if there is some particular protocol for packing; however, I’m fairly certain that items like bread, eggs and produce should not be placed underneath bottles of soda, jars and cans. Just a hunch. The best part of it all is that, knowing this has been a recurring issue, I attempt to race through the checkout line, packing as many bags as humanly possible myself to avoid such problems. But inevitably, there always comes a point when the cashier feels the need to jump in – and downhill it all goes. I mean, you can clearly see the way I fit as much as possible, mixing heavy items on the bottom with the lighter ones on top. Again, not rocket science. Just common sense. But no sooner has the cashier grabbed a bag then it is promptly filled with three bottles of soda piled on top of a loaf of bread and some fruit and vegetables. You
didn’t want to actually eat that stuff, did you? Nah, not at all, keep piling it on. Better yet, why not put each item in its own bag? I’ve gotten to the point that I will stand there and rearrange the items into a more acceptable combination before leaving the store, then hand over the 5 or 6 leftover bags which I no longer need. Who cares if I’m holding up the line. Take the hint. Watch and learn. It’s really not difficult; it just requires a minimal effort, which shouldn’t be too much to ask. If it happened once, I could deal with it. Twice, I would be slightly irritated. But every time, every store, every cashier… is there a special training school for this sort of thing? And if so, what qualifies as a passing grade, not dropping anything? Guess we’ll leave that to the customer as they’re struggling with their 40-pound bag out to the car.

Partnering with Farmingdale State College’s “University in the High School,” Nassau BOCES now provides dual-enrollment opportunities for special needs high school students. The program offers college credit to juniors and seniors at several Nassau BOCES Special Education schools including the Center for Community Adjustment, Career Preparatory High School and Iris Wolfson High School. The goal of the program is two-fold: first, to increase the success of college-bound special education students

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto attended a ceremony honoring members of the Nassau County Police Department, who lost their lives in the line of duty. The annual event is held at a memorial in front of Nassau County
Police Headquarters, where the names of those who gave their lives while protecting and serving Nassau County’s residents are listed. Tragically, two names were added this year as Police Officer Joseph Olivieri Jr. and Police Officer Arthur Lopez were
both lost in October of 2012. Supervisor Venditto repeatedly thanks Nassau County’s finest for their service and for placing themselves in harm’s way to protect the citizens of the county.

The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will hold its annual juried art competition this summer in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition, Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea. This year’s competition is titled Let’s Go To The Beach, and all amateur and professional artists are invited to submit up to three works representing Long Island’s beaches. Deadline for entries is June 28th. A panel of museum staff will select final entries, which will be displayed in the Visitors Center from August 10th through September 8th. Judging for the contest takes place on Friday, August 9th and the winners will be awarded in at an artist’s reception on Sunday, August 11th from 2 to 4 p.m. Winning entries will be displayed in the Art Museum, along with the Coney Island and Jones Beach exhibition from September 12th through 29th. The reception is free and open to the public. Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to art and history as it relates to Long Island. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Regular admission is $9 for adults, $7 for seniors, $4 for students 6-17 and $1 on Thursdays. Experiencing the same view astronauts get from space, the students examined the Earth Balloon in its entirety in their school gymnasium. The third-graders observed the silk-screened outer
portion of the earth before entering the balloon to receive insight from educational consultant Rich Brundige on the position of the continents, the deep coastline canyons, waterways that flow through each of the continents, and the countries situated in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
LET THEM FLY - As part of their science curriculum, the third-graders at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School learned about the life cycle of the Painted Lady butterfly. During the program unit, each student observed their own larva, watched its development and journaled their observations. Through reading and research, students learned about each stage of metamorphosis and how butterflies adapt to survive. At the end of the unit, the children released the butterflies into their natural environment.

After two years of planning, on Saturday, May 11th, Cadette GS Troop 3079 from Wantagh, completed its Silver Award Project at Harvest to the World Soup Kitchen located in Roosevelt, NY. The girls and a group of volunteers renovated a freestanding garage that was in much disrepair, into a walk in food pantry. The troop, with help of the very dedicated volunteers repaired and sided the back wall, constructed and installed light fixtures and built wooden shelves. In
addition, the girls put together eight stainless steel rolling shelving units. Much planning went into the project, including estimating and pricing the needed materials, the solicitation of materials to be donated and the actual construction itself. Thanks to a generous donation, from Webelo Pack 600 Den #1, siding could be purchased for the remaining two walls. This siding was installed by a group of volunteers on May 19th. Joanna Bell Richards, the founder of this soup
kitchen distributes food several times a week. Her hope was to have a sound and functional structure to streamline this process. Thanks to the tireless efforts and dedication of Girl Scout Troop 3079 Ms. Richards has realized this dream and will be better able to serve the community of Roosevelt, NY. The program provides hospitals with a web-based patient management tool, best practice discharge protocols and standing orders, along with a robust registry and realtime benchmarking capabilities to track performance. The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures can improve the quality of care for stroke patients and may reduce disability and save lives. “Recent studies show that patients treated in hospitals participating in the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke program receive a higher

A Tree Grows was felled, like so many, by Superstorm Sandy, but when we heard about it, we knew that we had to replace this significant tree.” When Hempstead Town learned of the fallen memorial, Supervisor Murray directed the Town’s Engineering Department to secure a replacement tree. The planting and dedication was set to coordinate with the center’s already scheduled Memorial Day Ceremony. “There was no question in any of our minds that we had to do whatever we could to replace this tree,” said Councilwoman Cullin. Councilman Hudes added, “This tree is a small token of our thanks to the Veterans who have served our country.” The tree was originally
purchased in 1991 by the Men’s Club of Bellmore and the Bellmore Senior Center and planted with a plaque dedicating it in memory of all Vietnam Veterans who gave their lives. In later years, the scope of the dedication was expanded to include all Veterans. Members of the Center were devastated when the tree came down in Superstorm Sandy. Hempstead Town will replace the original tree with a beautiful pear tree dedicated to all Veterans. “Our Veterans have done so much to protect us and our freedoms, replacing this tree dedicated to them is the least we can do,” concluded Supervisor Murray.
EXTENDING THE HOLIDAYS - The Mepham High School’s Key Club recently participated in the Extend The Holidays Toy Drive. The drive, which ended in February, aimed to extend the season of giving beyond the holidays, and intended to provide toys and books for hospitalized children and/or children in need after the holiday season. The toys will be donated to Nassau University Medical Center on June 8th.
America’s Best High Schools The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that, for the second consecutive year, Newsweek and the Daily Beast have ranked both MacArthur and Division Avenue high schools
among its 2013 America’s Best High Schools. During the annual survey of thousands of high schools, Newsweek and The Daily Beast search for the top 2,000 educational institutions, which have

For many teens, the end of the school year is bittersweet. As soon as the final bell rings, students’ attentions shift from school, directly to unemployment. What should be a time of merriment soon proves to be anxiety provoking. Scrambling for a position, many students will fall victim to the minimum wage, monotonous positions that deprive them of summertime enjoyment. From the moment one embarks upon his first job, he or she becomes an adult. This hopeful teen now has the luxury of paying taxes, lengthy obligations and an overwhelming commitment. But it isn’t all bad.
These children quickly learn the value of money. It takes quite a bit of effort to make a dollar nowadays. The students that are employed can finally pay for their own movie tickets and even foot the bill after dinner. For me, a sixteen year-old who has held a steady summer job for the past four years, the excitement of purchasing my first vehicle was overwhelming. The pride I felt hanging that coconut air freshener from my rearview mirror was immense. I knew that it was finally time to show off what my hard work had earned me. While my friends were at the beach, I was bussing tables; but now, they are all asking me for
rides. It is a great feeling to be one of the few from my generation who can say that they bought their first car with their own hard-earned money. Some parents are wary of pushing their offspring directly into the workforce, and rightfully so! Letting your precious baby grow up is hard, but the rewards that even the most trivial of summer jobs can bring your child are endless. It truly pays to work! On top of building one’s résumé, a summer job is a “hands-on” learning experience that no amount of studying can produce. If you find yourself looking for something to do this summer, maybe it is time to find employment!
